Sonic the Hedgehog has always been a family-friendly video game mascot, so it's no surprise to hear his upcoming live-action movie – due out on Valentine's Day – will be suitable for almost everyone.
The MPA Classification and Rating Administration have given the upcoming film a PG (Parental Guidance) rating. Here's what that means:
PARENTAL GUIDANCE SUGGESTED. Some material may not be
suitable for children.
And here's the rating itself:
As you can see, it'll contain some "brief" mild language, along with some violence and rude humour. We can't imagine much of the bad language will be coming from Sonic directly, but we'll just have to wait and see.
Will you be heading to your local cinema to see this movie when it comes out? Tell us down below.

No mention of nudity? Saucy Sonic isn't even wearing pants for most (if not all) of the film, though perhaps Americans are less prudish about hedgehog nudity.
It will get an 18+ certificate in Finland though.
@Silly_G I really hope you're joking. I don't know anything about Finland.
@Kalmaro : It was an in-joke about the supposed banning of Donald Duck back in the day (due to his lack of pants).
Dam, was kinda hoping it would at least be pg-13.
Not surprised.
Even Cinderella 2015, Beauty & the Beast 2017, Alladin 2019 by Disney were rated PG.
@Silly_G If Finland is that prudish, even as a joke, it makes me wonder how it managed to produce Tom of Finland 😂
@Travisemo007
...bruh. Its a Sonic movie. A Sonic movie. Kids are the prime audience
Spoiler: Shadow shows up to just to say "Where's that DAMN fourth Chaos Emerald?" and leaves.
@Travisemo007 : If they had been aiming for a more adult audience, they would have thrown in a gratuitous use of the f-word to gain a PG-13 rating (rather than making any alterations to the story that would necessitate such a rating). There are far too many American films that would have otherwise been rated PG or even G overseas if not for their obsession with bumping films that aren't necessarily intended for children to a PG-13, which I find to be quite annoying, really, especially as they feel conspicuously out of place, being the only use of the word in such films.
Sonic is fast but not fast enough to outrun diarrhea. “Oh man, I just sh!t myself. And that’s noooo good.”
Aw, but I wanted to see Sonic violently murder Eggman with a ludicrously high amount of explosions in the background! MAKE IT R, YOU COWARDS! (/s)
@PBandSmelly Uh-huh. Doesn't explain why kids adore Marvel... or Star Wars... or Jurassic Park... or 007 movies.
All of which were/are rated PG-13.
Point being, you can push things without going into Deadpool territory.
The movie contains speed....
So yeah
I am shocked! Here I was expecting a gritty ultra-violent R rated experience.
@Silly_G
...Are you a fan of Shadman/base too?
@JR150 : Never heard of it.
"Rude humor"? If this means it contains something as lame as a joke about getting hit in the groin or some sexual innuendo that the likes of "The Cat In The Hat" and "Alvin And The Chipmunks" employ, then I won't even bother to watch this ironically.
Oh no! PG? Whatever will we do! Won't somebody think of the children!? In my day kids were going to see robocop and nobody cared. They even made a whole toy franchise out of the thing and it was rated R!
I saw childs play 3 in the theater at the age of 11 and not one person working there tried to say i needed permission from a parent.
You kids today are soft.
He probably says "damn" or something.
@Silly_G
Let's just say it's a person who draws movie Sonic in not PG XD
Any of you guys remember the transformer movie from 1986? That one had a certain four letter word in it and the movie was rated plain old PG! They didn't try to safeguard kids from naughty words like they do today.
They're just like screw it! Hey kids here's a bad word for you! Enjoy! Oh and now watch as we brutally slaughter your favorite characters within the first 10 minutes of the movie! Heh heh heh!
Ahh the 80's! Good times!
@Zeldafan79 : If you are talking about the "poo" word, the MPAA allows that word at the PG rating. Variations of the word, however, and perhaps aggressiveness/frequency may push language into PG-13 territory.
@Silly_G
Yep that's the one! I didn't know that word was allowed in PG movies back then. I guess in transformers it was used for panic so it slipped by.
@Zeldafan79 : Prior to 1984, they even allowed infrequent use of the f-word at the PG rating as there was no PG-13 rating back then, and such content may not have been considered strong enough to warrant an R rating (the PG-13 rating did exist at the time of the release of the classic Transformers movie). The "poo" word had no problem at the PG category then, and is unlikely to have an issue now unless used in excess and/or aggressively.
Hell, the Australian Classification Board even allowed the "poo" word at the G rating on rare occasions, which is a far cry from how stupidly strict the G classification is now!
There’s no rule against using that word as they did in transformers from 1986. Originally transformers the movie was rated G and that meant it would have limited showings during the day, so the creators and Hasbro jointly decided to throw in a specific curse to bump the rating to PG which allowed it to play all day.
I suspect those who rated it still live in the nineties.
@Kalmaro @Silly_G it's weird they banned that. Duck tales comics were on newsstands everywhere when I visited helsinki
Dang. Now I HAVE to take my weird nephew to see this piece of crap
@Zeldafan79 That movie darn near gave me PTSD. It should have been rated NC-17. You know why.
Before the model change it would probably get an NC17 rating.
@Zeldafan79 I remember those days. My cousin and I went to see Robocop 3. My aunt paid for it, and didn't even watch it herself. We went to the theater by ourselves and had a blast.
Of course we knew how to differentiate between "fiction" and "reality" back then.
The heck that face looks like a devil acting good..
Is this movie coming to a Nintendo system?
It'd be funny if Sonic says the d word in the movie.
@Travisemo007 Just wait for the NC-17 Shadow movie.
Yeah we're going to go and give it a pity watch for the effort they put in to try and please us crybaby fans. That and we might have fun ripping on it.
Anywho, a PG rating is nothing these days.
Also, little kid Sonic is a cutie.
@TheFox lolol! That's terrible!
Why is everyone complaining that the movie is PG? Its sonic the hedgehog, not call of duty. Why can't we just leave it be? Its not like its a DISASTER that a sonic movie would be rated PG. If it was a PG rated GTA movie then yeah that would be bad but this is sonic guys. Its not a big deal. Stop being big babies because you want this movie to be "Grim" and "violent"
No I am not a boomer. I'm just saying...
We should just admit that us sonic fans are a huge bunch of crybabies that are never pleased.
@WWEEEEEEEEEEEEEE so you purposely registered just to tell me "shut the heck up"? You need help dude, you seriously do.
