Goku (Ultra Instinct) Is Joining Dragon Ball FighterZ As A DLC Character

Oh great. Another Goku character. Don't they realize Goku is overrepresented? Why can't they add a character that I want?

Wait a minute...

I just couldn't get into Dragon Ball Super. It's probably because as an adult, my tastes have changed somewhat but that's not only it, as I still like other shonen anime. I watched Fairy Tail to its conclusion and am enjoying My Hero Academia right now.

I think the Dragon Ball series "ended" for me when Gohan beat Cell in DBZ. I kept watching for years but it never felt as cool as when Goku went super sayian and beat Freeza and then when Gohan surpassed his father, became an "ascended" Sayian (a name later retconned out) and beat Cell.

For me, that's where they should have stopped. After the Buu saga and GT it was all downhill and Super just failed to pull me back in. I gave up on the series.

For anyone complaining, dont. This is by far the most UNIQUE Goku. Ultra Instinct isnt your standard SSJ form. Ultra Instinct allows the users body react to danger on its own. The body reacts purely on instinct, making it near impossible to receive damage. Which means UI Goku is going to be a very unique fighter to play as in game. Chances are he'll play like Hit a cross between Hit and Jenemba. Full of Counters and odd warping.

Im excited to see UI Gokus Dramatic Finish against Jiren. With how giod Gogeta vs Broly was its going to be sick.

I think they're trying to compensate for the lack of Goku in Smash.

They need to add Super Android 13.

More female characters please. The parody of those Sailor Moon characters would be interesting as one character.

I stopped watching Dragonball Z after Freeza but if my intuition serves me correct, there will always be a next Goku form. It's unstoppable, unless maybe they blow up the universe and start over. Heh

Eh, he will be easy to beat. Just keep running away, blocking, and dodging, and eventually he'll just collapse from the strain on his body.

@rjejr DBZ Kakorat did it wrong. The game should have focused on an alternate universe where Vegeta`s role was switched with Goku. There should have been new character designs like in Heroes. A whole new story with a difference in power levels would have made for a good rpg.

As much as I make fun of all the Gokus in this game, I'm still excited. They all play differently enough and I adore this game.

You think smash fans have it rough? Imagine skipping out on Roshi, Mr Satan, Kefla, Ribrianne, and Whis for the 8th Goku!

Yup, could not agree more. The series what actually supposed to end at the Cell saga, but the coorporate people kept thirsting for that dragon ball cash cow

I thought the majin bu stuff was funny but I mostly agree with you. GT was more like a Saturday morning children's cartoon more than an anime.

@PBandSmelly @Heavyarms55 Dragon Ball ending with the Cell Saga was mostly a myth.. however Toriyama did confirm that he wasnt planning on stretching out the Buu saga so long. I believe skinny Buu was originally the final big bad.

As for milking the franchise, the only reason we have Dragon Ball Super is because Toriyama was SO badly treated by the Dragon Ball Evolution team which threw him off set for daring to suggest he knew the property a little better than them. The two DBZ movies that introduced Beerus were effectively his FU to Evolution (and performed better at the cinema).

Why is that this game needs 5+ versions of the same characters?

@PBandSmelly Yeah the Cell saga is when I stopped watching the show. I saw the epic conclusion then I guess like I just moved on with my life.

The game is called Kakorat. Switching Goku's role with Vegeta is not going to make any sense. I think you want an entirely different game, not Kakarot.

@rjejr So it's just the same Legacy of Goku/Attack of the Saiyans/Legend of the Saiyans/Hyper Dimension/DBZ Sagas/Budokai/Tenkaichi storyline all over again but this time more boring? The least they could had done to make this one good is have Raditz win for once. Would make for a nice what if DBZ game, they can call it Dragon Ball Z: Carrot and Raddish.

You just described almost every video game series ever. 2D Mario, 3D Zelda, DK, SF. That's how games from a series usually work, and people keep buying them so why change?

If this game does well enough I can see them making a newer game with a more interesting storyline but hardly anybody just finished DGZ Sagas which came out in 2005. To me this is an update of that, which after 15 years it's bascailly a full priced HD remake or remaster.

Only it's single player instead of co-op so I'l probably skip it for that reason alone. If it had the co-op that Sagas did 'I' probably pick it up. But I can't knock a game called DBZ Kararot for having the story of Kakarot, it's in the title of the game.

This where you are wrong.
UI Goku is actually really different from the other gokus.
If you wtached the anime then you should know that his complete fighting style changes and all his attacks and dogdes he performs look relly bizarre yet natural. That one time e.g. where he beat kefla by "sliding" on her final attack(don't knw how to describe it) is something you would never see from a regular goku.
I agree though that the other gokus(except black) are basically the same thing, but bandai namco still did a good job at making them quite different even though everyone has some sort of kamehameha in their moovepool

They really go overboard with the forms nowadays, huh? Next thing you know his next form would just be his hair turning red, blue or green and that means stronger.

@Heavyarms55. I really liked the dubbed soundtrack and can't really handle Dragon Ball without it.

@Aerona I don't mind either the original Japanese of the English dub. More recently I enjoy the Japanese because I can watch it without subtitles - huzzah for Japanese written for children! #almostbilingual

But I grew up with the English and I do consider it one of the better English dubs.

@DanteSolablood That's fine for Toriyama, I don't care about the myth or not. As far as I am concerned the whole franchise never was as good again. First Goku became a super sayian and beat Freeza, then he was surpassed by his son who beats Cell. Everything after that tried to be as cool but never lived up to it. Not for me.

@Heavyarms55 - to me, Super lacked a certain attention to detail that Z and the original Dragon Ball had. Despite Dragon Balls reputation of having mindless action and fights, my personal opinion is that in Z, (aside from 'when they toyed with each other), every blow mattered. There were consequences and the story developed along with that. It felt like when a character developed a new power, there was build up or hinting prior to attaining said power. Many examples exist.

The trouble with Super is that the fights felt generic. Beatdowns felt random, comebacks felt random and power was only lightly attributed to 'being saiyan'. Yeah this happened to a degree in Z but there was hard logic established as to why in its own rules. There were genuinely interrsting moments where something bad could have happened to build the stakes, but the writers chickened out and returned to formula. To me Super felt more like it had so much more potential. I liked it, and there were some great moments, but it fell short of what it could have achieved if they invested more into it beyond weaker attempts at 'emulating' fights or playing it too safe.

@DarkScythe13 There was definitely more attempt at consistent world building in Dragon Ball and DBZ than there was in Super. I have no issue with and actually like when a fictional world builds its own rules.

But that's the problem with Super, it felt like it gave up on it's own rules and kept trying to invent new ways around them making it pointless to have had them in the first place. Setting limits or rules that you intend characters to break is only impressive once or twice - after that it becomes the norm and ruins world building.

That's why it was such a big deal when Gohan "did it right" and went beyond super sayian, but then it was less impressive with SS3, and then God and then Blue and then Kaio-ken blue and then Ultra instinct... When breaking the limits becomes normal, there really are no limits and it ceases to be impressive.

That said, there are still moments in Super I liked, but it just did not live up to earlier moments in the series.

@Heavyarms55 Agreed. For me a major example of how Super falls short is during the Goku Black / Future Trunks stuff. They had some pretty cool ideas but at some point they seemed to hit some kind of creative limit. Suddenly Trunks gets a power up and can hold his own but the closest explanation we get for why is 'rage'. No one acknowledges it beyond him simply having more power. At one point we see them spam beams at Merged Zamasu and they manage to give him trouble but the only explanation is that at this point its 'part of being a saiyan' that they grow stronger in the middle of a battle itself - thats a significant leap out of the blue and IMO not one we usually saw in Z without more to it.

Most anime im used to (including Z) would take advantage of explaining exactly how and why a power up is what it is. Its an important opportunity for world building. Even Gundam shows with their emphasis on selling models take the time to rationalise and justify 'upgrades'. We have had retcons before ('zenkai boosts') but again these explanations were established early, expanded on as important plot points and (more importantly) even supported past instances perfectly.

At times it felt like Super has the same feeling as the movies preceding it (including the OVA Yo! The Return of Son Goku and Friends). They dabble in a bit of 'Dragon Ball' but wont fully commit. Its a revisit or tour of DB familiarity but only a limited expansion of the world or these characters journeys. The manga has done a bit better at times IMO but it falls far short of what it could /should be.

Goku is the Fire Emblem of Dragon Ball FighterZ. It's like the developer can't stop giving us more of him.

I loved Super, watched it through twice now and appreciated it even more the second viewing. It flows a lot better than Z, Kai being required for me to watch Z through again.

@DarkScythe13 All good points. Though I've never wholly agreed with the cynical view that new designs in Gundam were just to sell models precisely because they do such a good job working it into the story - at least the vast majority of the time.

Then again, I absolutely love Gundam above basically any other anime, so I am slightly biased. XD

We all knew UI Goku was coming but it doesn't make Goku FighterZ any better for it.

If it was faithful to the anime Ultra Instinct Goku should one shot every character except Super Saiyan God Blue Goku and Vegeta (they could take some hits)

Exactly how does Ultra Instinct Goku specifically make Dragon Ball FighterZ better "as a game" over another character that isn't another Goku?

We don't even know how he plays yet, so you can't make a judgement on how he improves the game mechanically.

And if you're arguing that any new character would improve the game and it doesn't matter that it's another Goku, than that argument works both ways, and any other character would have equally been welcome.

And most people don't want even more Gokus.
