Arc System Works' latest fighting title Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r] looks pretty nice, but man, that title. Never have we been so happy to have the 'Copy > Paste' shortcut command. Yikes.
Still, it's shaping up to be a pretty special fighter. It showcases 10 different game modes and 21 unique characters to use – with, on average, around 600 frames of animation each. Speaking of the visuals, the game aims to blend 2D and 3D seamlessly, as you can see from the new trailer above.
Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[cl-r] (thank you, Copy > Paste!) arrives digitally on February 21st, 2020. It's also coming to the PlayStation 4. Interested? Tell us with a comment.

Wow, that is bad
Can't wait for the next update, [Ctrl-Alt-Del].
Seen any of the Portable Kingdom Hearts titles ?
600 frames of animation per character they say but that looks stilted and rubbish to me. No 2D fighter has yet to beat the animation of the fighters in Street Fighter 3.
So glad to have the Anniversary collection on Switch despite its issues.
@SBandy don't count out Garou: MotW; it has some smooth animations as well!
Wow, what a thought-provoking article NL. You will never cease to amaze me. I can't wait for the next article to tell us this game has a fantastic game title! Or this game has a mediocre one!
@Luigivaldo
I have Garou too and it looks fantastic but I think SF3 still has the edge. It is great to have them both on the one console!
'Kingdom Hearts χ' says hi.
As does 'Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days'
As does 'Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage-'
As does 'Kingdom Hearts ...' etc etc - you get the idea.
I think "New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe" is still in the top 3 worst names.
I just need it to drop so I can play it. Not my favorite fighting game series but its good for a few rounds.
I’d rather get GranBlue Fantasy Versus. Hopefully that comes to the Switch as well.
CTRL+V, the fighting game.
Eh. Some NIS game titles are worse. htoL#NiQ: The Firefly Diary comes to mind. The first part of the title looks like someone sat on a keyboard and just decided to keep the random string of letters and symbols that resulted.
@AllieKitsune
[cr-lf] would be the natural progression. 😂
@Ralizah I was thinking of that exact one. I just wonder how announcers even attempt to pronounce the titles at tournaments.
@ViewtifulJotun
But even that is destroyed by the eldritch monstrosity that is "Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS Nintendo 2DS Super Mario Maker Edition."
This has nothing on some Japanese light novel titles. Here are some of my particular favorites...
"Reborn as a Vending Machine, I Now Wander the Dungeon"
"I Couldn't Become a Hero so I Reluctantly Decided to Get a Job"
"A Black Gal Was Transported to a Fantasy World and Mistaken for a Dark Elf" (referring to a ganguro girl, so the translation is especially awkward)
And who can forget:
"I’m a High School Boy and a Successful Light Novel Author, But I’m Being Strangled by a Female Classmate Who’s a Voice Actress and is Younger Than Me"
That's not even the worst title on Switch.
Weird title or not, this game looks fantastic and will be on my to buy list.
Nobody plays a game cause of the name anyway so who cares
Say that three times fas-... but how do you pronounce it??
Japanese creators love juggling various elements of English, and even with their native language we now live in the age of manga series and their adaptations having entire PARAGRAPHS for titles. And then there are song titles, too - ever seen Hiroyuki Sawano's OST tracklists? Intentional puzzles, some of arguable Layton caliber.
At least that name took some thinking... better than vvvvvv...
@nessisonett Huh-toll Hash-Nigh-Que. Announcers either contact the developers for an official pronunciation.. or just do it phonetically.
@Ralizah That one looks like a franchise name abbreviation followed by a sub-title in understandable English. UNIST's full title is entirely nonsense.
Okay but like, what about the game itself?
@SBandy what do you think of art of fighting 3?
Yeah a lot of these anime fighting games are just nonsense these days.
@LinkSword
Where did they get a "#" symbol for "no", though?
@AllieKitsune Do you seriously that will be the next update of the game?
@CodyMKW What do you mean? You don't care how dumb the titles are?
@SetupDisk Oh, yeah, then what is the worst title on an Switch game?
For anyone trying to understand that title: first they made Under Night In-Birth, which, okay, kind of dumb. Then they made the Exe:Late version, which really wasn't a horrible subtitle on its own. Then the Exe:Late[st] version, which made sense from there.
But then they made an even later version, and tried to get too clever with it. Late[r] wasn't enough, apparently they just had to clear the [st] first instead of making a pronounceable title.
@SBandy KoFXIII easily beats it and every fighter, no questions.
@stevep Take a minute to think about how you move in VVVVVV, look at the pattern the letters make, and then realise why it’s one of the cleverest game titles ever.
You know what they say: The stupider the name, the stupider the game.
I'm still sticking with Blazblue Cross tag for now since the new update is a nice little element to get me to test out more combinations of fighters.
@Custom1991 Monster Energy Supercross: The Official Videogame, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, Dream Daddy: A Daddy Dating Simulator, Bleep Bloop, etc
There are a lot though some may be because of translation.
@SBandy King of Fighters XIII? I'd argue titles like the recent BlazBlue games also look phenomenal. It's worth considering UNIST was developed by a tiny dev team for a very small niche of players, and its reputation as a brilliantly balanced and intricate game has caused its reputation to exceed it's visual fidelity. All this considered, I think it's a fantastic looking game UI aside.
Anime fighters also necessarily have less frames between keyfranes on many attacks than fighters with less of a mobility meta, to the point that even 2.5D titles built on 3D rendering systems like DBFZ or GGXRD intentionally limit frames on many attacks for the sake of reliable visibility during the heat of battle. They compromise that ridiculously smooth aesthetic found on Street Fighter and King of Fighters titles in order to make for a cleaner gameplay experience.
@SetupDisk So you remembered the longer titles of those games?
Nope. Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -a fragmentary passage- still wins, at least in my eyes.
FIFA 20: Legacy Edition is a pretty stupid name for what should have been titled FIFA 19: Remastered.
@Custom1991
You are special, shine with all your might!
Of course I didn't remember the whole titles I just remembered they were bad and looked them up. Why ask if you didn't want an answer?
As I typed you are special shine with all your might.
Whoever thought that title was a great idea really should be looking for a new job lol
