It might be pretty hard to believe, but it has now been five whole years since we first got our hands on Nintendo's amiibo figures.
Today sees the fifth anniversary of the launch for the first wave of figures in Japan, where characters like Link, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, Pikachu, Mario and more all entered the scene as part of the Super Smash Bros. Collection. They actually launched slightly earlier in North America and Europe, on 21st and 28th November 2014 respectively, so we're firmly into our sixth year of collecting in the west.
To celebrate the occasion, Nintendo's official Japanese Instagram account has shared a cute little video. We still remember picking up our first figure (it was Link, if you're asking) and we've been spending far too much on the things ever since.
Have you enjoyed collecting amiibo over the last five years? Do you tend to use them much in your favourite games? Feel free to show off your collections in the comments below.

I only have 4. 2 Pikmin, glow in the dark Boo and Smash Link
I still remember setting alarms before every hour of the night to keep checking whether any of the online stores (Target, ToysRUs, etc) started preorders. I remember obsessing every hour of the day just in case the Jigglypuff preorders came back online.
I hate amiibos
Not only they gixe us terrible additions to games (And if they give something good it will be even worse) but I cannot stop and buy the ones I like.
Like every Zelda amiibo or every Metroid amiibo. But I keep them locked coz they become dusty and stuff like this and I don't like playing with figurines... ((
I bought the ones I liked, and some cheap ones my mother found who knows where. Outside of saving Splatoon gear and occasionally getting items in Hyrule Warriors I'm not using them much after the initial unlocks though.
I have some of them. 😀
I have the majority of them, just missing a few expensive ones.
I have no regrets, just that I still do not have a Joker amiibo.
@Pablo17 photo photo gooo!
I have multiples of all the ones I own. I also am only missing a small handful of them ... Amiibo have been very costly and take up a lot of space ...
was kinda hoping for some crazy amiibo game where you level up your character and play with other people online
idk
I don't think I can be bothered procuring all the cards (especially the criminally underproduced Sanrio pack!) but I have every single figurine except for the Skylanders ones.
I just hope I can nab the four new Shovel Knight amiibo releasing next week.
Everywhere I look no one carries them. Online they seem like they are out also. It is too much effort to find these.
2014 doesn’t seem forever ago. 2004 doesn’t seem forever ago. <sigh>
Its crazy to think how far Amiibos have come in terms of quality. When Amiibos first launched they were rough, I remember people bashing them because they looked like sever downgrades from the initial models shown. Like how the original Link had a really nice clear stand, but the retail version had a much cheaper looking copper-colored stand. But now the level of detailing on Amiibos has become crazy good. They've definitely come a long way, and its amazing to think that next year we will be getting a Banjo and Kazooie amiibo.
@Welshland I wish had four. Nintendo really played me with the scarcity tactic, even if it was accidental due to production issues... I probably have 60-70. They were fun to chase down for a while. Biggest waste of money!!! At least I only paid slightly over retail for one or two, like maybe $3-$4.. ....some would pay $100 plus!
I have all but a few of the Smash amiibos, and I've been collecting since Day 1ish? I do kind of miss the days of lining up hours before a store opens in rain, and in blizzards (Rosalina), and in -20F temps (Meta Knight.) I honestly never saw myself getting caught up in the collecting of these when they first came out, but as a life long Nintendo fan, it was nice having these little collectables representing characters that normally wouldn't get figures or statues. While I do miss standing in lines, and the "social" atmosphere these early launches had, I am also glad the hype has died down enough now that I can just reserve the new ones online, and have them delivered or pick up at the store. Not many other game/toy companies can get their fan base riled up to the point of standing in line for hours like Nintendo can, and I love that about them.
I own all the Smash, Zelda, Spatooon, and Monster Hunter ones. I have a few Mario and Animal Crossing ones and I bought most of the one-offs like Soltaire and Chibi Robo. I probably have over 120 of the damn things at this point. I haven't counted because I don't really want to know.
I have all the US released Amiibo's except the Skylanders. Have all the following series completed: Smash Bros, Splatoon, Mario Bros, Zelda, BoTW, Fire Emblem, Yoshi, Kirby, Monster Hunter (not released in the US) and all the one off's (including the cereal box). So if anyone has any Skylander Amiibo laying around, lemme know lol...
If I knew how to post a picture, I would lol
@Fandabidozi ummmm, 2016-2017 are starting to seem like forever ago. Dang, only a few more days of 2019.
I have all of them except the gold and silver monster hunter ones, and the gold megaman 11 one.
I REGRET NOTHING!
....I have about 60. Yarn Yoshis are most adorable, most important for me are Ryu and Piranha Plant. I have not bothred with recolours of Inklings or with 8-bit thingies. Last ones I bought were Odyssey Mario, Bowser and Peach when those were on sale.
I love them. So well made and I love figurines. My hubby once asked what is this... no matter what closet door I hope, Amiibos keep falling (I hid a few even he doesn't frown to my Amiibo buying since he knows I only buy when have some extra moneyz). One of Amiibos is my husband's and it is - of course - MegaMan.
I have to admit I have not kept up with Amiibos recently, only that Piranha Plant. ..Should check out. Hmm.
I have about 100 of them and all of them are still sealed. Some days I feel like opening all of them. Last one I bought was simon Belmont.
Yeah, but they look good en masse:
only god know how I hesitate to start serious to collect them!! I'm waiting my first first one bought (I won a bad one buying smash, from animal crossing). It's the golden shovel knight!
I have all amiibo figurines, almost everyday checking local online store if there is preorder for new one. Japan versions I managed to buy when I was traveling there. And US/Canada versions from ebay, witch I think golden Megaman and maybe silver/golden Mario amiibos are only ones.
@Obito_Sigma Dark days indeed
I've been an addict for 5 years? geez ok I need an intervention.
I’m starting to sell them. I just don’t have the space for them
Wish they were easier to buy, and better stocked up
Just eight for me. My favourites are the little green yarn Yoshi and Shovel Knight.
I never bought any. Sure they look cool, but I don't want a bunch of nick nacks cluttering up everything.
AH 2014 What a year for nintendo Smash and Mario kart 8 came out on a supposedly dying console. And 3ds sales we going mad too. And even though Wii U sales where no where near as good as ps4 at the time in 2014 the wii u was the better console.
Actually I have 5, totally forgot I have Mr. Resetti too. How did I forget about Mr. Resetti
I haven't bought any amiibo since close to 3 years ago. The ones I currently have will probably be all I ever have.
I have 8 amiibo sitting on my desk (7 Smash, 1 Kirby), but I haven't gotten any in quite some time. Even though my siblings have less, they've gotten more of them more recently than I have...
I have.. just about all of them. Aside from the cards, anyway (and certain event-exclusive ones like I think that gold Mega Man 11 one or what was it?), I have every single one released thus far including ones never released outside Japan.
Hoho.... I have 110 .... yes, Im an amiibo addict
When Toys r us was closing down, my towns store had so many amiibos on sale. I got all the smash ones for $5 and the animal crossing ones for $2.50. It was a good day.
I have about 20 including Gold Mario. But my favorite is probably Shulk. If they came out with more Xenoblade Amiibos, like for Xenoblade Definitive edition!, I would probably buy every single one.
I have 109, and I have around 30 in my to-buy list for when I can find them at a reasonable price, plus all the unreleased Smash Amiibos for characters I like, such as Banjo and Terry Bogard which I'm dying to see.
I have about 60 amiibo. About 40 I've kept unopened to retain their value. When I was a kid in the 80's I would've killed for quality Nintendo toys. Even if they don't have much use in game, they're well made collectables.
@Finntendo your post makes me feel a little better. There is the "Nintendo factor." The Skylanders Amiibo really were a step down in quality. Plus the nostalgia, even with IPs that I wasn't that much into is cool. Still, I spent about $900 on plastic- would be lucky to get $200. As far as liquidity goes, maybe a dollar a pop if I really needed the $$$$
I have all the Amiibos released. The figures, including the US and Japanese only ones. I kept away from collecting the cards.
All mine are still boxed and I don't use them. Instead I use N2Elites for data as it means I can carry them all with me when out and about.
I have around ten,all of Smash Bros 4 WII U.But i only paid full price for 3/4 of them, got the others with sales (got the Falco one for only 2 euros!).Bought all of them during the Wii U lifetime, haven't bought any of Smash Ultimate.
@ShaneReactions I got the Skylanders ones when Toys's R Us closed down, you could buy the full games with all the included toys for like US$5 each (Wii and Wii U games). But I just checked on ebay, and while not as cheap as before, they're still relatively cheap for Amiibo prices.
@GauBan Do you have the Japanese Cuby one? That's in my to-buy list, but I doubt I'll ever get it. No way I'll pay US$200+ for any Amiibo.
Let me see, I have Wolf Link, BOTW Link, Inkling Boy, Wedding Dress Peach, Smash Bros. Zelda, and Yarn Poochie. That's all. They are cute, and every time I see new ones there's one I'd like to have, but when it comes to actually shelling out cash I invariably feel like it's an unjustifiably silly use of my money.
EDIT: I lied, I also have Charizard.
I have only bought 6 total... they make me happy. I not played Link Awakening yet, but got the Amiibo 😁
@nab1 yes I do. I got it with the Box boy game, but I have a Japanese 3DS (well 4) to play it on.
@Thwomp_Stomper
Oh that is wonderful price. Here Toys R Us (at least my local) didnt' have much Nintendo stuff, at least not amiibos, in the end.
That is very, very nice price. I just checked amiibos and ugh. New ones are actually 22.90€? Even with startin 16.90€ they were priciest. It's not like they've gone up price elsewhere.....
I think most expensive one I've bought is 27€? Now I just stalk when they go to 10-12€ range. Or order bunch from German Amazon.
For me, I purchased all the collections of each series except Box Boy. And that's about close to 300 Amiibos or more but haven't taken a number inventory.
But I use this site to collect them all.
https://nintendo.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_amiibo
That way I won't miss them.
I do hope the fanfare over 5 years means that Nintendo will increase functionality.
I thought they had been around longer than that.
While I have slowed down on collecting them I still love them just for displaying purposes, the only upcoming one I really want is the inevitable Banjo Kazooie one, may grab the Dragon Quest Hero while I am at it though!
I have a small handful of them. Snake was the first amiibo I bought in over three years. After a while Nintendo got shy about including interesting amiibo content in their games, and then half the reason for buying them was gone.
I have 179 unique figures (a couple extra Mr. Game & Watch and a second 8-bit Mario) and most of the first series Animal Crossing cards. I've never put them all out together so maybe that's my goal for the weekend so I can get a full collection picture.
I wonder if anyone has figured up the actual retail prices spent on all of them. I'm afraid to even think about how much I've spent!
I've started thinning the herd by gifting my less-favored ones to friends. Still looking forward to the Geno figure, though.
I swore I never would buy one, but broke down earlier this year when I saw Pearl and Marina amiibo for dirt cheap. They look amazing.
@Finntendo I was shocked when they were that low. I really wasn't intending to start collecting them, but when they were all my favorite characters I couldn't resist. Now I have about 30 but at least 10 came from that sale. They were even giving away the amiibo display through a raffle. I wasn't so lucky 😢
The more expensive one I got was the samus return two pack. That cost about $30
I wish that they can make all the amiibos in card fashion like they did with animal crossing, then the plastic amiibos would stay in their case.
I have a ton of them.I want the new smash ones of banjo and all the others
I have three amibo. Twilight princess special edition wolf, and two animal crossing amibo I found at discount stores. Total spent ~$12 US.
all i have is a mewtwo. i have not the money for more...
Thank God I have the ones I have, and (that) I am not driven to complete any series, or collection. I love 'em, and they're awesome! I try to get the ones I most want.
amiibo haven't mattered since 2015. They could have been so much more but Nintendo hasn't cared about them for a long time.
I’d post a pic of my almost complete collection of smash amiibo but just realized I don’t know how to. Any tips??
