This week at London's Bloomsbury Big Top, the results of the 37th Golden Joystick Awards were revealed. More than 3.5 million public votes were cast to determine the winners across 19 categories.
On the Switch front, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate took out the Nintendo game of the year. Perhaps more impressively, was when House House – the Australian-based developer who created the charming and humorous Untitled Goose Game – received the Breakthrough Award. Via GamesRadar:
The award recognises a studio, developer, or person in the industry who has had a year to remember. House House — whose previous game Push Me, Pull You was released in 2016 — clinched the award thanks to the enduring popularity of its stealth puzzle gem, Untitled Goose Game.
Minecraft won the 'Still Playing Award' and Epic's battle royale Fortnite won eSports game of the year. Epic Games also won the studio of the year award.
The former head of Sega AM2 Yu Suzuki – who worked on many of the company's arcade titles over the years – was recognised with a lifetime achievement award, and the ultimate game of the year went to Capcom's Resident Evil 2 remake, available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

The fact that GTA Online’s shameless casino got best expansion is absolute nonsense. Iceborne exists, guys.
The Day the Goose Got Loose
Golden joystick is a joke but I'm glad the game is getting recognition.
BTS World for best mobile game? From the little I played I remember it being a little... creepy?
Days Gone best storytelling 😂😂😂
Yikes at those winners. Thankfully, literally no one takes this award show seriously.
Impressive that smash bros wins goty in a year it didn't release.
Lol at Smash not winning "best audio". I mean just tell me one game whose soundtrack even comes close to being half as good and vast as Smash Ultimate's. I mean beside Smash for Wii U and Brawl.
Some of those winners lol especially smash as it was released last year and basically got more sales so obviously more votes, tbh fire emblem or luigis mansion 3 should of been this years winners in that category
I don't understand why Epic Games won Studio of the Year award? Sure, they're still producing updates for Fortnite, but that's all that they've really done this year (in terms of games).
Capcom, Square-Enix, Nintendo, Microsoft Game Studios, pretty much any other developer/publisher deserve the award much more than Epic.
@Krisi To be fair, I love Smash’s soundtrack but it’s more rooted in other people’s work. I reckon ‘best audio’ refers to RE2’s amazing use of 3D audio. Mr X’s footsteps resounding around the station make the game feel extremely tense and I’d say it was a better use of ‘audio’ rather than a better soundtrack.
Smash was eligible this year for awards because came out well past the cut off point last year for awards of this nature. Just as it will be eligible at this year's Game Awards. A game released that late in the year (December, in Smash's case) gets pushed back for consideration to the following year.
@nessisonett I see. I only played the PS1 version of Resi 2, but I loved that. I can see how good audiowork could make stuff like that even more tense and scary.
However, to someone like me who loves video game music, something like Smash is just a treasure trove. Sure, original songs are not the main attraction (even though they are very good as well), but it has many Smash-exclusive remixes that are very different from the originals, and are great to listen to. Like that remix of King Dedede's theme with Japanese instruments that sounds like a showdown between two samurai or something. I never get tired of this soundtrack, and being something I can listen to for hours on end even when I'm not playing, is very special.
@Krisi I genuinely completely agree about Smash’s soundtrack. For me, certain tracks like the Fire Emblem Awakening music and then the Persona tracks were everything I’d ever wanted. The lack of FF music is an absolute tragedy because some of those remixes would have been great. Even the recent remix of Megalovania was a great touch, they could have just used the original. The only thing I would maybe add would be more BotW music and a whole host of DKC music. I mean, no Aquatic Ambience? Overall, the soundtrack is truly brilliant though. I think it’s probably the best one of 2018, with this year’s being Death Stranding so far.
Resident Evil 2 was a good game but "Ultimate Game of the Year"? Not in my opinion anyways.
Well deserved Yu Suzuki this man is a genius outrun space harrier hang on power drift and of course shenmue glad to see him get some recognition
I'm not one to bash Fortnite, but Epic for studio of the year?? Each to their own I suppose.
Overrated game
@KryptoniteKrunch Tbh, were yoy expecting much else? Fortnite has basically forced it's way on to every platform and news feed or outlet, as well as most children's livelihoods. I don't like it but just scrolled past ignoring it.
So, I guess the Outer Worlds will get something next year?
@Jayofmaya No, TOW was released before the cut off day.
Well no Golden Joystick for World of Tanks this time heheh.
Congrats Suzuki-san!
VF6 please?
I love that Control made it. Just got the plat
