It's been an exciting week for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with the arrival of the DLC fighter Terry Bogard and Version 6.0.
Despite some fans not knowing who the heck he was initially, this veteran fighter is here on behalf of SNK's Fatal Fury and King of Fighters series, ready to take down the likes of Ryu and Ken.
It's got us wondering, though, how many Nintendo Life readers have been playing as Terry Bogard since the release of Challenger Pack 4 earlier in the week. Nintendo also recently asked how everyone was handling the SNK legend, via its official Nintendo Versus Twitter account:
As a result, we've decided to run a poll to get a vague idea of how many of you have been playing as Terry since he was released. So, without further ado, select one of the options below and feel free to share your own early impressions of this fighter in the comments section.

I won't be adding him to my roster.
The same goes for every DLC fighter so far, none of them have appealed to me.
He's interesting but I'm playing buffed jiggly puff more. So much easier to land rest now!
Bought the fighter pass and haven’t regretted it for a second. Terry is a welcome addition, but between K. Rool buffs and sticking with Hero and getting into elite Smash with him I haven’t played as Terry THAT much. He’s fun though, and a beast to fight against if the person knows what they’re doing.
Kind of baffling that someone who isn't very iconic would be a paid fighter, but whatever floats their boat.
Edit: "BuT hE's IcOnIc To mE"
I bought the fighter pass day one, Smash is the kind of game that I play enough to warrant having all of the playable characters for the sake of having them, even if I don't like them.
Terry gameplay wise doesn't really do it for me, I tried him in a few matches against my friend, he's not terrible but I don't find him particularly fun to use either, I doubt I will be using him that much once the novelty of being new is gone. The stage that came with him is also one of the lamest yet, the gimmick alone doesn't do it when there aren't even any platforms to make it interesting, battlefield is the only way for that stage sadly. The soundtrack is what made this particular challenger pack though, a truly amazing list of songs (which is why it is even more of a shame that the stage is so bad).
I play every game as Terry........my name is Terry.
@personauser93 I mean...you can think what you want to think but it doesn’t take away from his long and storied history in territories that matter just as much as yours.
Yup, trying to main Terry.
Yeah, and he is surprsingly fun. Not on the same level as Hero but still a lot of fun
Hell yeah! Best DLC there is for now.
I have been a closet Faral Fury fan for a few years now so jumped at the chance to pick him up as well as Banjo and Hero. Hard pass on Joker though even if he would have been free if you add together the prices of buying fighters individually compared to the fighters pass.
Finally tried him out a couple of days ago and he’s mega fun. That stage is a hot mess but fun with friends. Don’t expect it to be anywhere near competitive play though.
This poll has 7 options but none of them fit my feelings at all.
Exchanging feet pics for Terry DLC
I went all in, and Kirby becomes so much fun when you set the computer or opponents play as DLC; love the metal slug songs. Kirby Hero and Terry are a lotta fun. Final smashing, all the extra songs, the invisible wall stage, and of course chanting (I know H-E-R-O and his 4 random skill moves down/b including an occasional heal, so it's not time consuming as I feared). Rising tackle is hilarious and great idea to recover.

I'll edit that judgment song to be embeded if someone tells me regardnig vids on this forum; I just know [/IMG] for images.
Probably my favourite of the DLC characters so far. There's a bit of jank regarding direction when recovering and some of his weaknesses are glaring but he's got a killer keep-out and punish game. Bamco and Nintendo have done a wonderful job incorporating his iconic moves into what feels like a very tightly balanced kit that slots into the roster wonderfully. The plethora of music added and the inclusion of a very fun and unique stage is more than welcome too!
It's my son's Smash game, but I went ahead and bought him instead of waiting for him to decide to use his payroll to do it. Terry means a lot to me as a character I've been into since Fatal Fury, and I really wanted to see what he's like in Smash. I really enjoy playing with him, pretty much more than any other character in the game.
This poll doesn't really have answers to the question; just if you "have" Terry yet. I downloaded him, and fought all the new Spirits, but I haven't touched him or his Classic Route, because complex inputs stressed me out enough with Ryu. T_T
Not used him much yet, he feels ok, but nothing amazing to me. I’m sure in the hands of a pro he will be unstoppable, but I’m nowhere near that skill level and so far he just feels like a fairly standard, mildly uninspiring brawler - one to whom I have no particular affinity (I knew who he was before, I get that he’s probably SNK’s most iconic fighter, but I’d never played any of his games before).
And I kinda feel like they missed a chance to make him more unique - would have been cool to give him a unique plane-jumping dodge to emulate Fatal Fury. Or gone KOF-style and made him a 3-in-1 like Pokemon Trainer.
Or better yet, use the guys from Metal Slug instead. Maybe the guns were off-putting, but the cartoony style would have been a great fit for Smash.
He's kinda lame, imo.
@gaga64 respectfully disagree. He has a more scrappy, over the top aggressive fighting style than Ryu and Ken while still carrying a lot of fighting game mechanics with him, but implemented much differently making Terry a combo beast. He’s also the only SNK rep that...honestly makes sense to me as the first addition. Adding Metal Slug before Terry would be like adding Arle before Sonic with Sega, or Leon before Mega Man.
Only picked Joker up.
Faced a couple of Terry's, they just spam that downwards punch.
Love playing as Terry. And all the content he came with is so thoughtful and complete. 50 new songs!?! Wow
The poll... doesn't make full sense. The question is whether we've played Terry, but the answers are whether we've bought Terry.
Anyway yeah I bought him, but only played him once so far. Terry is as exciting as a wet sock to me. I understand he has his fans but I'm absolutely not one of them.
..he still beats Corrin though.
His move set seems more difficult than others, but he is a neat character.
I've only played two matches as Terry but he's already my favorite DLC character so far. His moves are so satisfying, especially Buster Wolf. Also, 50 songs. SNK's music is always top notch. Would buy Nakoruru Mii costume too but I never end up using Miis since I always pick random and you can't get Mii from random (which is pretty stupid).
Sakurai needs to direct a KOF game stat
He nailed EVERYTHING
This guy could probably put a Neo Geo Turf Masters character in Smash and still make him a viably competitive fighter
Nair to command input is sooo satisfying...
I tried out Terry in a few matches, and he’s probably my second favorite DLC character right next to Hero. Terry’s move set is really interesting, the King Of Fighters stage is awesome, and 50 songs including Metal Slug Songs is just fantastic. I’m liking this DLC so far.
I love Terry. Back in the day he was always SNK's Ryu in my mind. Nice to see him onboard.
I'm not even playing Smash in general, got a problem with my wrist so the games I can play right now are limited.
I love how the DLC characters are so varied.
King K Rool is my main though... heavy + projectile = win.
Terry is one of my favourite fighters in this game and of all time. I'm genuinely surpised that so many people don't recognize him. He's a very iconic SNK character
I actually like the dude a lot more than I expected! His combos are fun to pull off. I could definitely see adding him to my list of mains! None of the DLC characters so far have been particularly exciting to me (I just want Doomslayer and Leon S. Kennedy), but I really enjoy filling out the roster and seeing just how big it's going to get. Waiting and seeing the roster expand throughout the year is honestly one of the most fun things about Ultimate to me.
I have the fighter's pass and yes, Terry is very very fun to me. The fact that they were able to put in almost all of Terry's moves from Fatal Fury and The King of Fighter series is remarkable. They even have that little "Go" logo at the bottom from Real Bout Fatal Fury series that let's you know when you can do his stronger specials like Power Geyzer & Buster Wolf. The KOF stage is fantastic with all the King of Fighters characters in the background, and having FIFTY SNK SONGS (including Metal Slug series and Psycho Soldier Jp/Eng VOCALS!) in that stage feels like we're getting away with something. It just warms my heart seeing so much overwhelming love and care to Terry Bogard and the SNK lore in general.
I hate that Mai Shiranui isn't here because the game is rated lower than T for Teen, but for now I'll be happy with all the riches we did get. And hey she is still in SNK Heroines, King of Fighters XIV is coming to the Switch at some point, and no doubt she'll be in King of Fighters XV. Hope this all brings new fans to King of Fighters. Thanks for reading.
He’s legit.
Like Joker and Hero most though. Then Terry. Then Banjo. In that order.
Not a hardcore Smash fan, so, like with Smash 4, I've mostly ignored the DLC, and haven't paid for any of them.
Also, while I recognize his place in gaming history, I'm not too interested in playing as him.
Still waiting for Shantae...
I answered the poll even though it asks the wrong question: I've had the fighters pass since a few days after hero released.
As far as playing Terry, yes. I've been SUPER HYPE for him and even though I don't have time for Smash lately, I stayed up late to play 3v3 and 5v5 squad strike at KoF Arena with Terry in rotation, with my roommate. Good times. That stage really favors heavy characters though.
I don't own the figthers pass.
@personauser93 I didn't even play SNK games back in the 90s, yet I still recognize Terry as an icon. Sorry, the issue here is your lack of knowledge, not Terry's status as an icon.
I tried him. He's fine, but Smash is a game I only really play with others, so it will be a while before I really put him through his paces.
Terry and Banjoo are my least favorite DLC characters so far, but hey that is just my opinion. I'm an rpg fan.
No but I did get Garou Mark of the Wolves while it is on sale and I'm having a blast with it!
Really should've added a poll for people who have no idea who he is, but are in fact, older than millennials, since @Liam_Doolan, @Damo or whoever from the staff seemed to think Fatal Fury and King of Fighters are household names for older people who don't play Street Fighter-type fighters.
More on-topic: I've had the fighter pass since day one, but haven't tried him yet. Not sure I'll play him often, but who knows.
@personauser93 When the original Smash Bros came out 20 years ago Ness and Captain Falcon were certainly not icons. Look at what Smash did for them. And what Melee did for Fire Emblem games in the west. I'm glad that after literal decades, Smash can still be about a character on the roster that makes me say "who the F is that," and then I learn about some really incredible games that I missed when I was younger.
If you've never played the games that some of these more obscure smash characters are from, go do yourself a favor and try them out. KoF XI is one of the best tag team fighters I've ever played, and I played it for the first time just three weeks ago. Just like Super Metroid, F-Zero X, Earthbound, Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, ROB and Game & Watch, I learned about it from Smash first.
Haven’t had a chance yet
I already had the challenger pass.
but also
This guy doesn't appeal to me.
Haven't played as him yet and his inclusion isn't enough to make me go back to the game either. I will at some point but we'll see when that'll be since Luigi's Mansion 3 and soon Pokémon will be taking all my time.
Boomers:Hey it’s terry Bogard!I can’t believe he is in this famous game
Newbies: WTF is a terry Bogard?
@Edelgard no I agree tbh I just couldn’t find myself get around to play as banjo and Kazooie
I’m still hoping they add someone like crash or papyrus to the game.....
The DLC has been very “meh”. Let’s be honest.
Yep, he's pretty fun. I'm not very good at the command inputs, but I still like to play as him.
Played his campaign and used him to get his DLC Spirits and then went back to Banjo. And thats all I want really. I'm more than satisfied with my Smash DLC.
@personauser93 To be fair, I have no idea who Joker is. I was still hanging out at arcades when Fatal Fury dropped, though.
As a secret fighting game fan, seeing these guys say he is the same as ryu is baffling. Have you even played them? They both have command inputs but play completely differently.
I feel like this kind of DLC doesn't make sense except for the heavily involved or overly wealthy players.
I mean, I would love to play them all. Especially Hero. But $25 or $6 individually?! If they were charging the same price per character for the mean game it would cost $444. Who can afford those prices if this isn't the only game they are playing? I guess I'll stick to Hero in DQ 11 until I get a higher paying job.
Sold my copy of smash, to floaty for my tastes. Ah well.
Nope. Banjo Kazooie is the only DLC fighter that's interested me so far, the rest are too obscure and uninteresting.
He is great, but I am absolute trash so smash power with him online is awful.
@Bolt_Strike To be fair Banjo is arguably more obscure he has had fewer games on older systems and nobody outside a couple of markets really recognize him.
@personauser93 Except he is iconic?
He's one of the most recognizable fighting game protagonists of all time, is the face of the company he's representing and his game series is among the most celebrated among the entire fighting game community
He's literally to SNK what Ryu is to Capcom
@NIN10DOXD Considering he starred in one of the biggest first party games on a console developed by one of the most well known hardware developers, not so much. Compared to protagonists from a niche RPG series or a fighting game by a developer that's largely irrelevant, it's really not that obscure. Sure, Banjo really hasn't had a lot of games lately, but the IP was a lot more important to gaming and its developer and publisher are still around.
Where's the option for, "Don't have a copy of Smash but have been considering getting one and maining Terry because duh!"?
Yeap I already got him, his stage, and all 50 music tracks that came with it. Now I'm looking forward to the 5th DLC fighter and I still believe it's Ryu Hayabusa. I know Sabi doesn't think so but he didn't denied it either so I still go with Ryu Hayabusa as the next best guess. Each DLC fighter comes from different videogame eras of the times so it's likely the next DLC fighter may be from either the 8-Bit era or the Cutting Edge era or both.
1. Joker from the HD era (which represent PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii)
2. Banjo-Kazooie from the 32-Bit/64-Bit era (which represent N64, PS1, Sega Saturn, Atari Jaguar, and 3DO)
3. Hero from the 4K era (which represent Switch, Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One)
4. Terry Bogard from the 16-Bit era (which represent Super NES, Sega Genesis, Turbo Grafx-16, and NeoGeo. Fact: Terry had games in all those platforms)
Ryu Hayabusa would make sense as the next DLC fighter as he would cover the 8-Bit era which represent the NES, Sega Master System, and Atari 7800 as Ninja Gaiden was very popular during that era since almost every platform got its own version of the game. Not only that but Ryu Hayabusa being in Smash Ultimate also covers the Cutting Edge era (or the 128-Bit era by some) as well which represent the Xbox, PS2, GameCube, and Sega Dreamcast as that was the era that the Ninja Gaiden reboot by Team Ninja started.
Not that interested. I'll be having much more fun playing Pokemon Sword and Shield this weekend!
soon l will get that fighter pass so l can get Hero, Terry, and Banjo Kazooie. I'm sure Terry is a fun fighter to play as if he isn't like the other punching buff guys.
I finally caved and bought Smash Ultimate because of Terry Bogard. Best purchase I made so far, loving every minute of it. (Just bought Terry did not buy fighter pass)
Terry Bogard is a terrible character, because no one in the world knows who he is (North America is the world BTW). We should toss out irrelevent Smash characters and replace them with hot 3rd party characters who are known for their relevant appearances on Nintendo systems like Bubsy, FIFA Soccer player, Call of Duty soldier, Just Dance person, and Fortnite person.
I never wanted to play as Terry Bogart. I always skipped over him back in the day. I think because some you tubers like him has made him more popular than other characters.
@HeavyArmsSS
Yeah give me Mai over Terry I'm with ya.
@Kilroy You are confusing Millennials with Gen Z.
I don't play smash enough to pick him up. Only DLC I grabbed was Joker, though I might grab the DQ one at some point as it's the only other one i'm interested in.
Very cool character indeed, I don't share any nostalgia for him. Cool to see snk representation. Now onto the next fighter!
Bought the fighter pass just for him basically. Kind looked at it as say "I get Terry, but wait there's more!"
@personauser93 Terry Bogard is a stand-in for the entirety of the SNK fighting game catalog, including the King of Fighters series, the Fatal Fury series (Garou: Mark of the Wolf is a particular fan favorite), and the Samurai Showdown series.
He may not be iconic to you, but he's absolutely iconic to anyone familiar with arcade fighting games, including Sakurai. I went out of my way to pick up the full fighter pass thanks to Terry; I was going to skip all the DLC fighters but now I'm way more invested.
@BlueBlur101 And now Nintendo fans have their own tiny version of Capcom VS Snk 3, while everyone else gets Geese vs Akuma in Tekken 7
@NIN10DOXD I guess I'm too old for my own good, ha ha.
@lyubit I bought the pass when it released because I enjoy Smash that much and like to play all the fighters at least for a bit, but Banjo would've been the one to instantly convince me to get it if I was on the fence.
@lyubit Actually Capcom vs SNK vs Final Fantasy as well considering Noctis was also in Tekken 7 as a guest character
All Smash needs now is Negan
No I haven't since I don't own the game but if anyone wants to throw a free copy of smash for the switch my way I wouldn't be opposed
