As you might recall, this week the Japanese magazine Famitsu was hosting a special 'corporate' Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament featuring a number of local firms. One rather big surprise included Nintendo's competitor PlayStation.
In the end, Taisho Pharmaceutical won the competition, with its prize being a full-page advertisement and article in an upcoming issue of Weekly Famitsu magazine. Sony was knocked out in the semi-finals of the eight-team tournament by Zoff, and this firm was then taken out by Taisho. That's not what we're here for, though.
Arguably the most exciting moment of this event was when Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai walked out on stage and told the crowd he had been working on a new fighter earlier on in the day. Here's the translation, courtesy of BlackKite via Japanese Nintendo:
Today I also made things in the company, such as a fighter whom hasn’t been known by everybody yet. And I came here after the work has ended.
It's always great to hear when Mr. Sakurai is working on a new fighter, but it's now got us wondering who it could be and if it is the next character or perhaps one in development that's due out at a much later date.
If it is the fifth DLC character featured in the Fighter Pass, keep in mind this anticipated fighter may not necessarily be released this year. A notice on the Smash Bros. website says, "all packs will be released by Feb. 2020". Regardless of when the next fighter is made available, it seems like Sakurai will be working hard on Ultimate until the very end of 2019.
What character would you like to see added to the Smash roster next? Tell us below.

Can't imagine how this guy functions working so hard, and then adding more characters past the original 5 DLC...
@Severian Sakurai is a literal god. Where do you think Kirby got all of his power from?
Got to admire Sakurai’s genuine love for the series. Hopefully at some point he’ll get to sit around on a beach and just take it easy.
It's probably going to be announced at the game awards.
Lloyd Irving would be awesome.
There really is no doubt that Smash is a labor of love. The medium as a whole benefits from having a game like this.
Piranha Plant was announced at a Smash Direct, Joker at the Game Awards, and Hero and Banjo at E3. Then Terry was announced during a Smash Direct. With a minimum 3 remaining, I suspect the next one will be announced at the Game Awards, and the next two at E3.
Ok, ok. I will tell you all who the next fighter is. Drum roll please. It's me. My name in-game is Random Person # 138,278,301. The only ability I have is telling horrible jokes. (Hmmm, maybe this character is too close to the truth.) :/
@PBandSmelly Me too, but I want it playable with ring con.
@Xylnox mii fighter was already a character.
I really want to see the new characters, but at the same time I want this man to take a vacation!
Him and his whole team of people that work on these dlc characters! They deserve to rest
"HE"
I like you Sakurai, but you should give credit to the team as well.
Come on, Shantae! Let's go!
Call me nuts, and I still would prefer an Eternal Darkness rep (Alex if Spirits can be "promoted", Pious if not) and/or Adol Christin of Ys over this idea, but... I think a POW Armor from R-Type would be a really inspired choice.
Smash in general is lacking in shoot-em-up content; the Vic Viper would have been a great Assist Trophy, but no sign of it, and since controlling a starship is out of the question for balance reasons, the POW Armor being playable in previous R-Type games makes it a nice choice, since it could hop and hover around like it does as an NPC but still have access to the familiar R9 Arrowhead range of weaponry, and then the R9 itself could come in as its Final Smash.
Not to say that Sakurai isn't working hard. But by now their process and framework for getting new characters/stages must be pretty solid. I don't think it necessarily brings him too much stress. And I think it shows in his latest videos.
That is, unless they're preparing something really new (smash run comeback, adventure mode etc)
That reads like a google translation.
Goose from untitled goose game
Hopefully he doesn't overwork himself too hard
That one spot that is empty that is behind Terry and Ren, is empty for our last dlc fighter to fit in the picture. Well l think so.
Would be cool if they added at least one of the ninja turtles or maybe one of the characters from samurai shodown.
@Mr_Persona They've demonstrated several times that they can move the characters around to make room as they require.
@PBandSmelly I would love to see Ring Fit in smash as well
@Sabrewing yeah l heard about that but l got this feeling whoever the next fighter it is, is suppose to be there.
Sakurai, I love you. And the whole HAL crew!
My 5th fighter pick is Toejam & Earl as a tag team. That would be rad.
@nessisonett And watch the sun rise on a grateful universe
@PBandSmelly I agree with you. Ring Fit Adventure is a smash success, ended up being a genuinely awesome game, and is a new IP.
I'd also love to see Ring Fit Lady in smash. She can have a moveset revolving around her Ring and exercise stands.
I legit want her in.
Hopefully smash adventures (Subspace 2) will be rrvealed soon
You think anyone is working hard on Pikmin 4?
@fafonio you know, Lloyd would make the most sense! He's been exclusively on Nintendo consoles twice (at least for a while)
the tales series has been the third highest rpg series just behind final fantasy and Dragon warrior, (Don't know how they fare nowadays.)
And there's so much history and amazing music from a composer who`s been regularly working for smash!
Also his in game fighting style bassically is a smash set!
I'm still hoping beyond hope for some Golden sun rep. (Same composer btw.)
I wouldn't be very surprised if the last one is Leon Kennedy, or Phoenix Wright though. The first one ushered in the series rebirth on a cube exclusive. And Ace Attorney is a major Nintendo franchise who got really high in the poles (like Golden Sun!! )
I hope it's a DLC fighter I like and by that I mean one of these:
Ryu Hayabusa (Ninja Gaiden, Tecmo Koei)
Crash Bandicoot (Crash Bandicoot, Activision)
Pitfall Harry (Pitfall, Activision)
Shantae (Shantae, Way Forward)
Earthworm Jim (Earthworm Jim, Interplay)
Lloyd Irvine (Tales of Symphonia, Namco Bandai)
Doomguy (Doom, id Software)
Lara Croft (Tomb Raider, Core Entertainment)
Scorpion (Mortal Kombat, Netherealm Studio)
Klonoa (Klonoa, Namco Bandai)
Rayman (Rayman, UbiSoft)
Vectorman (Vectorman, Sega)
NiGHTS (NiGHTS, Sega)
Travis Touchdown (No More Heroes, Suda51)
Django (Hideo Kojima's Boktai, Konami)
Adol Christin (Ys, Falcom)
Joe (Viewtiful Joe, Capcom)
Goemon (Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Konami)
Ling Shenhua (Shenmue, YS Net)
Bonk (Bonk, Konami Hudson)
The Duke (Duke Nukem, Gearbox)
I think it will be a viral character, for example Steve from Minecraft. Or add fortnite and create WW3
I'm hoping for another Tetris crossover. Alexey Pajitnov using tetrinos as weapons like Pacman and his pills/fruit would be awesome. Then his final smash would be putting everybody on a Tetris board and have to dodge falling tetrinos.
Professor Layton, Master Chief, Ori, Phoenix Wright
Still hoping for Birdo or Barbara Bat, but I know it ain't happening. :X
I'm worried for the guy. I have worked in the Swedish film industry for over a decade and many of my colleagues have developed heart problems due to the extreme stress while working (16-18 hours day for months after months while have tremendous responsibilities on their shoulders). When I read stories after stories about how hard Sakurai works I become worried. He has to quit sooner rather than later before it's too late.
I would love for Shovel Knight or even another knight from the series to become playable. A Microsoft game character though is likely to see representation.
How about targets and platforms mode? The DKC cost 1/4th of the game. A new mode would be awesome.
Imagine this conversation:
Ohmori: "Well we shipped Sword and Shield at full price with half Pokédex and we're done with the games' roster, how about you join us because we're gonna PAR-TAYYYYYYYYYY and you're inv--"
Sakurai: "That's cute, but given I'm working for the fans, would you kindly get the hell out of my office, pretty please?"
Vault Boy/Girl
Goose
Commander Shepard
I can dream, too
Wants:
Lloyd Irving (Tales Series)
Byleth (FE Three Houses)
Spring Man (ARMS)
Dr. Robotnik/Eggman (Sonic)
Dr. Wiley/Protoman/Bass (Mega Man)
Shadow the Hedgehog (Sonic)
Shovel Knight
Moogle/Mog or a Chocobo (FF Series)
Octoling (Splatoon)
Waluigi
Captain Toad
Shantae
Ring Fit Girl
Mallo (Pushmo)
Dillon (Dillons Rolling Western)
Steve (Minecraft)
Jonsey (Fortnite)
Pauline (DK/Mario)
Chibi-Robo
@AlexSora89 I imagine it being inaccurate.
@Kainbrightside Yeah I don't see why he doesn't just take a break and let someone handle the DLC side of Smash Bros, if anything just give the yes or no on the choice of fighter
I admire his dedication, but the man really needs a break before he works himself to death.
My top 3 is deconfirmed Chibi-Robo, Saki Amamiya, Goemon
But there's still hope for Travis Touchdown, Prof. Layton, Bubble Bobble, Wonder Boy, Porkey in his Spiderbot, and Doshin The Giant!
@fafonio PLEASE!
@retro_player_22 Solid picks.
@garfreek Lloyd or some Tales of representative would be nice, I think Lloyd makes the most sense being most Nintendo, plus it's with Bandai Namco which also help create Smash, but I think they overuse putting main characters of a series in (and should opt for some more secondaries characters). So I'd say, Lloyd would be solid, but like Colette would be better, then we'd also have at least 1 female rep of this dlc pack (who's not the direct main character and yet again another sword wielding fighter).
That or Sora from Kingdom Hearts (or keyblade Kairi, or Shion or Aqua, which may make more sense cause then donald/goofy won't be expected to also be playable). Fingers crossed...
Though, since more DLC characters are being planned, and I'd say we could use more female reps, it'd be absolutely amazing if one of the Atelier gal characters got in, I'd go for Totori, Meruru, Ayesha, Escha; Wilbell, Linca, Odelia...etc. It'd be absolutely nuts if they made her like the Hero, so more chars are represented, but their clothing designs get pretty complex so...seems quite unlikely for the multiple option
Terry was a good addition to the cast. Some SNK love right there. Looking forward to to see who the character will be.
I stand by Professor Layton until the day I spend my last hint coin.
By the time he finishes every DLC, Nintendo sends him back to work at Smash Bros Ultimate 2
@MagicEmperor oh that would be so much fun!! Think of all that amazing music in smash!! A puzzle theme arrangement, a few of those main title themes, battle version of the london theme...!
Wasnt it also leaked that Blyeth was coming to smash as well?
@PBandSmelly And if you squat during smash attacks they will do more damage!
@PBandSmelly I feel like Ring Fit would not make the cut as it isn't that old, and wasn't a big hit or created new fanbase like we've seen with Splatoon. We may get a spirit or more likely, a mii costume. Ring Fit Trainer will most likely be an echo in future games
@garfreek No joke, my heart fluttered dreamily as I imagined it all. Yeah, I would be over the moon! I love Layton.
@DeltaPeng ah, but I really didn't like Collete!! Whiny and dumb as a rock..Can it be Sheena instead?
I would love more female characters. Secretly hoping Kat from starfox 2/64 will make it! Or one of the female partners from paper mario (Lady Bow, Goombella!!!)
@MegaVel91
Most likely. It still makes for a fun mental image.
@Kirby_Girl Ring Fit Lady? If you mean the main character you play as, you can also play as a guy in the game so if he/she was added to Smash i would say a more appropriate name for the character would be Ring Fit Adventurer with both male and female version as alts just like they did with Wii Fit Trainer
@Chibi_Manny whatever
@Ttimer5 THANK YOU
