Luigi has long since moved on from being a palette-swapped second player to a fully-fledged hero in his own right – heck, he even has his own series of video games these days – but he sadly isn't a playable choice in Super Mario Odyssey, the most recent mainline Mario title.
However, while he merely plays a bit part in the Switch exclusive, he very nearly sported a 'drastically' different look.
Speaking in The Art of Super Mario Odyssey, character art lead Sho Murata said:
Luigi hosts the Balloon World minigame. We wanted players to feel welcome in this minigame, so we gave him a cheerful and casual attitude, like a performer passing out balloons on the street. We wanted to make it seem like he came directly from the Mushroom Kingdom, so in contrast to the sticker-laden Odyssey, his satchel sports only stickers from the Mushroom Kingdom. One of the stickers is actually out of circulation…
We considered a drastic costume change for Luigi at first, but we ultimately went with a simple look, since it would work well against the background of this game’s world. I wonder… including the Luigi green, did you notice his balloons are the same colors as Super Famicom controller buttons? To the many fans who were looking to his appearance in the game, know that the designer in charge put a lot of effort into Luigi’s development.
Do you think Luigi would have looked right with a completely different costume, or are you glad that the designers ultimately decided to stick with tradition? Post a comment to share your thoughts.

shame this game didn't get proper dlc, hopefully a sequel forthcoming!
@quinnyboy58 I'm guessing they wanted to go the SMG2 route and save any extras ideas or contents for a full new game or sequel
My guess is that we didn't get a free Mario/Luigi swap akin to Super Mario Advance 2/Super Mario Galaxy 2/Super Mario 3D Land because of the "non-speaking Mario stigma" the main platformers have to deal with.
Whatever - if we get a Super Mario Odyssey theme for Super Mario Maker 2 sometime later down the line, it's going to be insanely worth every wait.
So we get an article but not a picture or even a description of what Luigi would’ve looked like? For shame.
@AlexSora89 I dont think they will add any more support to mario Maker 2. It sucks.
Mario Maker 2 is likely a system seller... I think it will get one more large content update for the holidays... then that's probably it... which is fine with me.
I am also hoping that the lack of proper DLC for Odyssey is due to a sequel in the works... Nintendo much prefers sequels over DLC, which is also fine with me.
Mario Party... well that's just a major disappointment.
@Euler I was looking for a picture, too.
Nice to know about the outfit thing
However that Balloon World is disappointing anyway, due to the fact some people are able to cheat and put their balloons in unreachable places
People can act so silly sometimes lol, to cheat in such a simple little extra game mode in SMO xD
@AlexSora89 How would a SMO theme work exactly?
Something like Super Mario Land 2 makes more sense to me
@Euler If such an image existed, it would be here... but it doesn't.
Should Nintendolife not be letting everyone know about the gamexplain dkc interviews
@PickledKong64
Well, there is still one further online course cap increase down the line.
@Doktor-Mandrake
It's actually very simple. Add a life bar to go with the basic 2D Mario powerups, trade in the 3D World flagpoles with Moons and Multi Moons, use New Donk City as the sky theme and that's kind of it.
@mittens
Both. As I said in my previous comment, it's not like the Odyssey moveset and a powerup system are like water and oil.
@AlexSora89 hmm. Didnt know that. It saddens me knowing how they are wasting mario Maker 2. Seems like it wasnt as good in hype as the first
This article was written to add those affiliate links. I'm not sure why anyone would expect actual content from this.

Not even a description of this totally different Luigi? What's the point??
Dang, no photo available. I would have loved to see this!
Great game. Utter Sh*te dlc
Super Mario Maker 2 is just worse than 1. More content doesn't mean better gameplay. The Wii U is a better console for that kind of game.
@PickledKong64
And yet, it's twice as good. Portable, without offline-only shenanigans unlike the 3DS one, and with a playable Luigi. I don't know what more I could ask for - that is, aside from extra styles.
