Capcom's Resident Evil series has well and truly made itself at home during the Switch generation. Not long ago we saw the release of Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 on the eShop, and before then we got the fourth game and the Resident Evil Origins Collection.
To top it off, Nintendo's all-star fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is now hosting a Resident Evil themed spirit event. Starting later this week on 29th November, you'll be able to get your hands on four new spirits – Chris, Leon, Wesker, and Jill – from Capcom's survival horror series. This event will last for a total of five days, so you'll have plenty of time to grab 'em all.

Ah, brilliant! I will definitely be grabbing these spirits 😁
Resident Evil 5 Boulder for Smash 🧐
Meh. The series and Capcom’s treatment of it is marginal at best.
Wait, what??? So this is just for the spirit board??
Ummm....does this pretty much confirm a RE rep for the 5th DLC fighter?
How many spirits are we up to now?
@Bizzyb Nope Spirits as of right now deconfirm DLC characters. Since Fighter spirits exist for fighters, and so far none of the standard characters in Smash have a normal spirit co-exsistng with their fighter spirit.
@Bizzyb The opposite. If we were getting a RE character as fighter #5 they'd have released these spirits alongside the fighter.
So yea this deconfirms any possible Resident Evil DLC reps. The choices came down to the main 3, and if they are spirits in the game then they have been deconfirmed. Also in case that's not enough proof, remember that DLC fighters come with their own spirit boards based on the series they are from. So why wouldn't these spirits have been saved for that if a RE DLC character was coming?
@Toshiro_Baloney I believe it is 1375 including these new ones.
@Mink And I thought I was doing alright when I hit 1000. Still a lot of work to do.
This is how dreams die...
@Bizzyb No because there were Daemon X Machina spirits and that didn’t confirm a character from there either
Woah, that’s actually really cool. Still, isn’t it a month late?
Wait what?
Awesome!
An unexpected treat.
@Keitoded but Daemon is a newer game.... I think for this fighter pass, anything that was released after 2018 or 2017 is off the table. I just remember something about newer games after 2017 won't be character (like Rex and Pyra) but that will definitely changer after this fighter pass
Ah geez, I just watched the third episode of Rick and Morty S4, and they slap me with this?! Ugh!
Almost thought a RE character was gonna be playable.
Well, I'll be busy travelling and then watching Erra and August Burns Red on saturday and then also travelling back sunday and eating with parents. Maybe friday night if I can get them all in time.
Speaking of spirits, this reminds me of the original concept for Resident Evil 4 where Leon was fighting ghosts in a castle.
As awesome as this is, it does neutralize any hopes of a Resident Evil character being a playable character in a DLC... Oh well. There's next generation, I guess...
Whelp, so much for Chris or Leon being a fighter in Smash. Would be interesting to get RE Mii Fighter outfits.
Dang, I'm still missing I-Tetrimino, I'm starting to think I'll never get it now ...
@Sihy The Spirit Board will more frequently throw you spirits you don't currently have, including ones you've found before and dismissed or used to summon, so just try and have one of each to maximize the odds of getting ones you're missing.
@Sabrewing that's the only spirit I have yet to obtain, I have one of every other spirit on my inventory (aside from Dracula and Marx, cause I upgraded them)
Welp, so much for any theory that the next fighter is from Resident Evil... It's weird though, why release a board when there's nothing major going on for RE releases or announcements?
@link3710 Because it's a highly-regarded franchise, and Switch can play a majority of its installments now. Spirits aren't always explicit tie-ins.
@Sihy @Sabrewing although the special timed event spirits (like the Tetriminos and these Resi ones) only enter the standard rotation a long while after the event.
I had to wait about a month after the Link’s Awakening Spirit Board Event to get those 2 spirits. And the Let’s Go Partner Pikachu/Eevee took even longer than that to enter general circulation.
So the Tetrimino will come along eventually, but you will have to wait a while.
With all those guys as spirits, I cross my fingers for Ashley Graham to receive the Smash invite!
Why is there a Call of Duty character on the left?
Chris Redfield for smash CONFIRMED
This is pretty cool, but it pretty much deconfirms any RE reps, which is kinda sad.
And yet there’s no Fire Emblem: 3 Houses, Ring-Fit Adventure or Astral Chain spirits?
So, now that Resident Evil is kind of deconfirmed (though it's great to have these spirits), that means only Monster Hunter and Phoenix Wright are left for popular Capcom Smashers.
Remember, spirits are a really easy way to promote another game launching on the Nintendo Switch, like the Resident Evil 4/5/6 collection.
For all you know, we might be getting Dante and Vergil spirits in the future, just to promote the Devil May Cry collection. And nothing more, not Dante as a new fighter.
So according to a few Twitter posts. Leon S Kennedy spirit is tied to Fox along with a whole bunch of Villagers which represent Ganados from RE4. Albert Wesker spirit is tied to Capt. Falcon which I assume is how fast and a heavy hitter Wesker is, Chris Redfield spirit is tied to Snake with Richter joining in who I assume represent Piers Nivans no sure and lastly Jill Valentine is tied to Wii Fit Trainer as her default color makes it nearly based on Jill's RE3 appearance along with Ganondorf who I assume serves as Nemesis.
@IceClimbers I believe this is even more proof that Spirits are not a hard disconfirmation for DLC characters.
There's over 1300 Spirits in this game, hundreds of characters could have been DLC, but if Spirits cannot be DLC, not only Nintendo killed the chances of hundreds of characters that could have sold well, but they are still killing more.
While these Resident Evil Spirits may be a red flag that we aren't getting a Resident Evil Fighter soon, I think it's a huge white flag for all the other Spirits, and the Resident Evil characters are not locked forever, this game is giving a lot of money to Nintendo and we may get even more DLC than he thought we were getting.
Now,idk anything about resident evil but if this article had no title, then i would have thought the guy at the far back is Terminator
More for Super Smash Bros Ultimate ? Now its an annoying and useless. What a waste. Oh boy!
@MercifulLemon7 Playing through it right now! Can't wait till the boulder punch! RE5 Chris is just too much... lol
@Juanblue85 Jill's spirit is her RE1 look and the fight is in Luigi's Mansion, undeniably representing Spencer Mansion, so Ganondorf is likely playing the Tyrant from that game.
@Sabrewing I mean, that's nice in theory but considering these were licensed from Capcom, there had to be negotiations involved.
@link3710 Which probably wasn't that difficult, considering Capcom's already present in the game. If it was a FromSoftware, EA or Falcom character, it'd be more eye-raising.
@link3710 Maybe RE3 Remake is announced at the Game Awards? RE3 is the only numbered Resident Evil game not on modern consoles.
