BlizzCon 2019 has just kicked-off and as expected the company announced a cooperative, narrative-driven follow-up to its popular team-based hero shooter Overwatch. On top of a PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One announcement, the new entry has now also been confirmed for the Nintendo Switch.
Overwatch 2 will see players become heroes once again as they participate in four-player co-op missions that challenge them to team up, power up and stand together against an overwhelming outbreak of threats across the globe. Here's some additional info from the PR about the new Story and Hero PvE missions:
As the story progresses, players will team up as different sets of heroes and fight to defend the world from the omnic forces of Null Sector, uncover the motives behind the robotic armies’ attacks, and come face-to-face with rising new threats around the globe.
The battle continues in Hero Missions, where the Overwatch team will be called upon to go beyond their limits as they deploy across the planet, defending cities against robot invasions, taking on elite Talon agents, and battling the villainous forces laying siege to the world. In this highly replayable mode, players can level up their favorite heroes and earn powerful customization options that supercharge their abilities in co-op play
The competitive aspects of the original title will make a return as well – with existing players' accomplishments and loot collections being carried across to Overwatch 2. The sequel includes the complete Overwatch roster, a new generation of heroes, new internationally recognizable maps to widen the scope of the world and a new 'Push' map type.
It's also been confirmed original Overwatch players will have access to all of the sequel's PvP content.
No release date has been announced just yet, so keep an eye out for this in the future.
Did you expect Overwatch 2 to make the jump across to Switch? Are you excited to fight together against the omnic forces of Null Sector? Tell us in the comments.

Must say it’s slightly bad timing for them to release OW on Switch and then immediately announce a sequel.
Hell yeah, story mode, custcenes, more moves, my jam! Too bad the badguy robots look hella generic...
Bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for them.
Poor timing on their part to release Overwatch last month, just to turn around and confirm this.
A PvE mode that doesn't happen once a year and is there from the start? I'll keep an eye on this one...I never bothered getting Overwatch because it just bored me. But if this sequel's PvE mode is addicting, then I'll buy the game JUST FOR THAT.
I mean, the only reason I kept going back to the first Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare game back then was for that PvE mode. Sadly the sequel's kinda....lost the charm the first one had, even when they gave the zombies their own version...and allowed you AI partners when you didn't have friends or whatever.
...Anyways yeah, I'll keep an eye on this. I need a new PvE to play since Garden Ops died a long time ago. TwT
Day One for me
@nessisonett
Considering all the maps and characters will be available free of charge to owners of the first, I don’t really think it’s bad timing, not to mention the fact we have no idea when this will release. It’s also good to release the first to get the user base invested.
And I mean, it should be said also that with ports coming later, if this doesn’t release for another year and then it takes them another year after that to bring the Switch port, I don’t think too many people would be happy going another 2 years without anything when they could’ve been playing Overwatch the whole time.
Still not happy at blizzard, but by the time this comes who knows how I’ll feeling.
That said, it’s weird they calling it OW2 with the big number two. Given the first story content will actually be on this game, I feel it should had instead been given a subtitle instead. OCD in me would feel weird about having OW2 and not having an OW1. I had a similar issue with Titan Fall 2.
As cool as this looks (couldn't care less about the boycott), it's still about a year or two away.
@Tharsman they wouldnt be in this mess they got themselves into if they stop bending over for china over gamers rights.
If there's a offline single player mode, I will be so down
cant believe they left the switch out on diablo 4 hopefully they reconsidered.
Diablo 4 and OverWatch 2... A Good day!
@RiasGremory mate Diablo 3 was like herpes it's got everywhere. D4 will turn up at some point.
Will only buy it if it's actually on a physical cartridge and not a code.
Is everyone really that hungry for another online “hero” shooter? When it goes on to perform “below expectations”, I’m sure it will have nothing to do with this industry cannibalizing itself.
Now that it will have a proper story mode, I’m interested. And I don’t know why people say “poor timing” regarding the release of OW on Switch recently. This game is still a year away, at least, plenty of time to play the first one.
Just a shame they aren't big supporters on free speech, yknow?
I want Warcraft 3 Remastered.
Overwatch Salmon Run. Sounds fun!
In Nintendo fashion,Years after it comes out on other consoles.
@TheAwesomeBowser I'm willing to bet that won't be the case. As cool as it looks the game feels more like an expansion to OW1 than a true sequel. It runs on the same engine and most of the assets(heroes, maps, skins etc) will be transferred from the first game. So i hope it's not that far down the road.
@Mgene15
There's no indication as of now that this won't be released the same day as the other version?.
I know you like posting the same "hurr-de-durr Nintnedo only got old third party ports" in every comment section of every article on NL about third party games, but you could at least make sure that the game you're talking about isn't "years old".
@Toy_Link & you no I’ll be right. Quit crying
@Mgene15
"Death Stranding will be delayed for five years because I say so, and if you say anything else contrary to that, you're a big meanee"
Look I can make assumptions without any proof too!
And no I'm not crying....
I'm laughing at you making an ass out of yourself.
@RyanSilberman thank Christ someone here gets it, far too many idiots opposed to freedom
Diablo 4 will probably come to Switch too.
@JaxonH it depends a lot on how OW2 is priced. As others have said, given all the PvP stuff will be fully shared between both games, I hope people who own OW1 have the option to pay a discounted price to upgrade to get the OW2-exclusive PvE modes.
It’s certainly making me rethink buying OW1 now, when an upgraded version is inbound (albeit probably a long way off).
they better bring D4 over to switch
I prefer that Diablo 4 that looks awesome, but this is good news as well indeed!
More third party support, keep it up!
Getting it day one!!! I love Overwatch on switch, logged 60 hours so far
@MarzipanD D4 won’t come to the Switch. I’ll be hugely surprised if it arrives on XB1 or PS4, despite this weekend’s statements it will. The online only / MMO aspect aside, the leaks (which have turned out to be true) reference focus on PC/PS5/nextBox due to the demands of the engine, the scale of the world, possible ray tracing, the detail etc. The trailers show extremely detailed environments, literally a decade away from 2012’s D3, if we are to reasonably expect a Late 2021 / early 2022 release. Not trying to be a party pooper, I think D3 plays it’s very best on Switch, but realistically, it’ll require beefcake hardware.
By the way, let's hope they upgrade the game to 60fps with the sequel. I expect no less than that.
Probably the best Blizzcon in 5 years. I think OW2 looks amazing and I am pretty psyched for the new story missions. Still need to double-dip and pick up the first one on Switch. And, yes, Diablo 4 looks "better," but OW is chocolate and peanut butter and I am always down for more of that.
@nessisonett You can play the game and keep everything from the first version, while playing the game with friends on OW1 and on top of that, Switch is actually going to be a launch platform this time! <3. $40 for Switch copy was a really good price point for a 3 year old game. OW2, we’re not going to see that one for at least 1-2 years. So game on!
I really wouldn't worry about release timing. OW2 campaign is probably over a year out and the multiplayer for OW1 continues to update even if you don't buy the new game. The best way to look at OW2 is as a glorified expansion.
