Nintendo may well have ditched the poor beast in favour of its shiny new Switch console, but the Wii U is receiving a brand new game today.
The game in question is Space Intervention, an action-arcade title from developer VG && IG. The listing on Nintendo's official site has what must be the shortest description for a game we've ever seen, simply reading, "Save our galaxy from the invasion of an alien race".
It actually launched on 3DS last month, too, but for some reason hasn't come to Switch, and appears to work in a similar way to arcade classic, Space Invaders. Here are a couple of screenshots:
If you feel like downloading it for yourself - who knows, this could be last ever Wii U game? - then it'll only cost you $0.99. It'll only take up 75MB of space, too.
How bizarre. Let us know if you're going to try this out with a comment below.

If Nintendo hadn't fumbled Wii U's marketing, we would probabaly still be playing it now.
Well, for 0.99 it might also be worthy, for the novelty alone.
What the what!?
I think I'm gonna dig this for 99 cents.
I like it when Wii U love is shown!
@Madder128 I think you underestimate the power of the Switch. Even if the Wii U had been a success Nintendo would still have released the Switch. (Maybe a year later, but still). However successful the Wii U had been up to that day, it would still have been the end for the Wii U.
I almost downloaded this on 3DS, but then never did. I'm not sure why, it's not like I can't afford .99 but I think I'll download the Wii U version just to give my long suffering console some love. It's strange how little information I could find on this game. I couldn't even find a video on You-Tube and the developer doesn't seem to have much of any presence on the internet.
@Madder128 I still play mine pretty regularly tbh. Loads of Wii and Wii U games that I have yet to complete that I revisit from time to time.
@Madder128 I think the Wii U was horrendously marketed, but it was also pretty flawed as a console. I don't reckon anything could have saved it in all honesty (even if it did have some cracking games!)
Well, Just Dance 2020 is coming to the Wii soon...
@Madder128 no
Our Wii U is still used near daily. Every person in the family uses it for something. 300+ games from Wii, vc, Wii U etc..., YouTube, Netflix, all easy to use on your tv or just a kid sitting playing.
We have 3 switch’s and 2x 3ds as well that get plenty of use of course. It’s just that as a home console, Wii U will always be my personal favorite.
I won’t be buying this either only because I own a few space invaders games already.
@Madder128
lol i actually still do haha. i Play Breath of the Wild on the WiiU and donkey kong. Didnt want to buy Breath of the wild all over again.
@Donutman Sounds like a big family with that amount of consoles.
75MB?!
So...much...bloat.
@Silly_G Exactly. And that's a physical release, not at .99 cent game. Just Dance 2020 on the Wii is much, much bigger news.
VG && IG: Good Day Nintendo, we would like to put our game on your system
Nintendo: No problem at all the Nintendo Switch has a variety of great games and we always welcome new talent.
VG && IG: No we want it on the Wii U.
Nintendo: ...the Wii U?
VG && IG: Yes
Nintendo: Well we do have the Wii but you will have to release physical.
To be honest i may give this a spin at 99p or whatever it is. Gotta fill that system memory up with something i guess
@KevTastic84 4 boys at various ages not counting myself
There are still new games added from time to time, i have account credit, i will pick this up.
P.S It's far far crazier that the Wii is getting the latest installment of Just dance.
Great news.
When's the review due @ryancraddock?
My Wii U saw regular use until this year, and it only stopped because I packed it up to let it rest. While I own a Switch, I haven't put anywhere near the amount of money into it. Eventually I will pull the console back out to revisit it's library.
In the meantime, SNES Classic and Switch are where I am spending my time these days when I get to game.
Moved my wii u upstairs and now off screen play works in 90% of the house. My switch gets most of the love but my wii u has both bayonettas and botw.
Doesn’t even look worth 99 cents.
@sanderev personally I love Switch. Wii U just had a lot more to give.
@Siddif I should really fire mine up again and play Breath Of The Wild
@The-Chosen-one Exactly the same, couldn't justify the double dip haha
@Alerif Hypothetically it may of been the case though.
Say it had been a success, the shelf life of the machine would of been a lot longer.
Look at PlayStation 2, or the original Wii for example.
People literally played them for years.
Ironically, the Wii U has a better OS than the Switch so far, with more functionalities, an internet browser and actual DATA MANAGEMENT.
@Madder128
but i AM still playing it right now...
I will buy because its just too hilarious
Nice! Did Battle Princess Madelyn ever come out for Wii-U? Last I heard it was still coming.
What year is it, why it's the same year as Witcher 3 got released
"appears to work in a similar way to arcade classic, Space Invaders"
Is it more like Space Invaders, Galaxian or Galaga?
Nobody should be selling a Space Invaders rip-off in 2019.
Galaga at least offers some fun.
Phoenix was my favorite but I realize that's a lessor known game. Can't beat Fur Elise though.
So it's got some lame Space Invaders clone?
@sanderev Agreed. I think they wanted the Wii U to last for about a year longer. It shows a little Andrew n that I think the Wii U tennis game, was probably going to be more like Mario Aces. But they had to cut it short and produce something. then, would the Switch be at least a little more robust?
I’ll have to get it. It’s on the Wii u baby
Honestly, I want to try it out just based on the novelty that it's a 2019 Wii U game. Also, I like the pixel art of the aliens shown in the screenshots.
What year is that? 84 judging from those pixels.
Have been playing my good old Wii U recently. I can find the GamePad irritating though if a game forces me to use it.
Not interested in this game though even if it is cheap.
My Wii U has seen pretty frequent use lately, but I'll be giving it a well deserved break soon. I'll definitely come back to it as there are a few VC games I still want to pick up and play off of the eShop.
@frabbit out of curiosity, what aspect of Wii U did you find flawed?
What easily looks like a mobile game.
@Madder128 the only flaw was the name. Fantastic console all round. If you bought a 3ds and Wii u. There was no shortage of big games.
The best thing about the switch is. It does both. Independent handheld and console
@1UP_MARIO yeah I'm with that opinion.
A lot of people thought it was just a tablet for Wii.
It’s so awful they gave up on this system. Easily one of their best ever. I love the dual screens. So much freaking potential in this system that they never used. I think I only had 2 games that used the camera, they should have pushed hard on the touch screen for customizing games, and I would have LOVED if they released a new version of the Super gameboy/ gameboy player where you could plop in ds/3ds games in to play on your tv
@frabbit the WiiU wasn't flawed at all as a console. It worked just as well as the PS3 and 360
@NickDaddyCool tank tank tank was a pretty cool game with the camera use for your Avatar icon lol.
Best way of getting undeserved attention? Release something on a dead console that people loved despite its flaws.
Later on today I'll be releasing my dating profile on the Sega Dreamcast.
Joke. Maybe.
I understand Nintendo's failures in making the Wii U a successful console, however, I really like this console. I still use it almost daily to stream Netflix, as well as to play my large library of NES/SNES/GB/N64/Wii games. Maybe I will use it less now that NES and SNES are on the Switch, but I will always enjoy having all those games on one console. And for $0.99, maybe I'll pick up this game as well!
The main thing that bothers me when going back to the Wii U these days are the loading times. It takes dramatically longer to start playing a game on than any other system I own, especially the Switch. I think if it had been marketed better, and perhaps if Sony and Microsoft hadn't rushed consoles out the gate to bury it, we might have seen a Wii U revision in 2017 instead of the Switch.
It's still a really interesting and versatile system, and I find the GamePad much more comfortable than playing the Switch in handheld mode, but two years into the Switch's life, I don't miss it too much anymore. Nintendo have done a great job in proving the Switch is just as fertile a device for innovative and distinctive software, with Labo and Ring Fit Adventure, but it's much more appealing to third-parties too. I do think it's a shame that we can't get more games like Nintendo Land, and I don't think games like Mario Maker or Captain Toad are nearly as well-suited to the Switch.
@frabbit two changes would have saved Wii U, I believe:
1) call it something else (Super Wii, Wii 2, literally anything but Wii U)
2) bundle in a pro controller with every console (offsets the Gamepad limitations and allows for easier access to multiplayer situations)
Nintendo's approach to Wii U was ripe with assumption, arrogance and complacency. Things Iwata swore they couldn't do (i.e. his "resting on our laurels" comment back in 2010-11ish) and yet, allowed to happen under his watch.
The Wii U is back, baby!
I love the Wii U, it will always be one of my favorite Nintendo consoles! I have it resting for now while i play my new Swich games but i will be using it again soon, i still have a lot of Wii U games left unplayed. As the matter in fact I'm about to play with it tomorrow cause me and 3 of my friends are going to play some Animal Crossing amiibo Festival together, that game sucks single player but with 3 or 4 players is a real hoot! lol
I hold that the Wii U was a great idea with terrible execution.
I might be one of the very few but i knew the Wii U was a new home console right from the start. Since gaming is my hobby i like to keep informed on these things. I still stand by my belief that it was a highly underrated console that didn't get the love it mostly deserved.
yeah it was flawed in execution and poorly named but i loved having a game system that doubled as a handheld. I still play mine a few times a week to this day.
I enjoyed the Wii U and still occasionally do. But Switch took me over. The ONLY edge the Wii U now has over the Switch is the awesome eshop layout over the Switch’s boring one! WHEN WILL NINTENDO REDO THE SWITCH ESHOP??? It’s time!
@Madder128 Great console, completely botched marketing. Years into its life I had friends who still thought it was an addon for the Wii. I managed to convert them with Nintendoland's amazing asymmetrical multiplayer though...
@Aaronosauruses i thought they are removing netflix support from wii u?
75 MB? This looks like it should be 75 KB at most.
Well, I still have half a Terrabyte left on my Wii U external hard drive, so it wouldn't matter how big a game is.
That was the good thing about Wii U: Unlimited memory for every huge game without ever deleting something.
(On Switch unfortunately every MB is important.)
Unlimited memory when i works.
The Wii U needed a lot more than better marketing to succeed. Like a different name, a different design and more power. Oh and more software.
Basically what it needed to be was a completely different system.
I still play my Wii U because I love the second screen and want easy access to a few N64 games.
If this game is out in Europe, I’ll download it.
Oh, and it’s also still the best way to play Wii Fit.
There will be dancing in the streets of Sligo (if Sligeach ever left his house)...
@Madder128 I don't want to be down on the console too much because as I said it had some great games and some good ideas!
At first thought though...
I have positive things to say about the console as well if anyone wants to hear those... if not, then happy to discuss the above of course.
A triple A title I trust🎖🏆
😂😂😂
@frabbit a well rounded argument, must say I mostly agree with all of that.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love my Wiiu it's a cracking console and it still gets played regularly. I now own a switch too but I have invested over 200 hrs in breath of the wild alone so won't be shelling out another 50 quid for the same game. The switch owes a lot to the wiiu for most of its 1st party games are wiiu ports or updates. I actually think the wiiu gamepad is nicely made and surprisingly comfortable for it's size. I wish people would stop referring to it as 'ill fated' or badly timed as i for one will be playing mine long into the future. Long live the WiiU! 💙
@SirPrimalform never picked that game up, is it worth picking up?
@Madder128 They should have named it Wii 2, so it's clear it's a sequel and not just a tablet for the original.
@The-Chosen-one
"lol i actually still do haha. i Play Breath of the Wild on the WiiU and donkey kong. Didnt want to buy Breath of the wild all over again."
What "donkey kong"?
@Mario500
Lol yeah, donkey kong tropical freeze. 😂
I still have mine hooked up, and play it regularly. Currently playing Teslagrad, Dig Dug II (VC Nes), and Shantae Risky's Revenge. I have to be careful, though, Teslagrad was apparently poorly optimized to run on WU, and, as a result, certain fast-paced screens, or boss-battles crash my system. I remember mentioning this on Miiverse, and was not the only one having this specific problem.
I love my Wii U and it’s actually my most used console despite having a Switch.
As for this, the Space Invaders clone I made for my Intro to Game Development class in community college looks better.
@WiltonRoots LOL! Forgot about him. 🤣
So...no respect for Nintendo wanting Breath of the Wild to be the last Wii U game?
Um, you know Ubisoft are still releasing yearly updates to Just Dance on the original Wii, right? The console made before the Wii U.
@Tonyo I would imagine that they will eventually remove this support, but it's still going on Wii U! I was watching The Irishman on it last night. Hopefully they get it up-and-running on Switch before they remove the Wii U support!
