Apart from encouraging development teams the freedom to experiment with new ideas, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa also intends to branch out and provide fresh offerings in different areas. For example, since he's been at the helm, the Japanese company has truly embraced mobile games.
In the same interview with TIME recently, Furukawa spoke about monetary transactions in Nintendo's mobile games:
In terms of monetization, that’s something that we decided on an app basis. It’s something we decide looking at the game content of each app, as well as the IP used and the player that we’re targeting. We also look at how we can best have the players enjoy the game, as well as how they would be comfortable in spending money.
Since Furukawa has been in charge, Nintendo has released Dragalia Lost, Dr. Mario World and most recently, Mario Kart Tour on Android and iOS devices. On its release day, Mario Kart for mobile was downlaoded 20 million times and banked US$1 million. In Nintendo's most recent quarter, the company made $92 million in total from mobile games.

So he thinks players are very comfortable with playing lootbox to play as Mario in Mario Kart, this doesn’t bode well.
Are there people out there who actually like the free to play, pay to play more/unlock stuff model of game design? I know why corporate people and stockholders like it, but are there any people out who think "Yeah, this is way better than buying a game and unlocking things via gameplay!"
@Heavyarms55 well, considering how many negative reviews for Super Mario Run there are because you have to pay for the game with no microtransactions I guess the typical Mobile gamer likes it.
@Heavyarms55 The whole younger generation of casual gamers is being taught this way of gaming. It's up to us to teach them the right way.
@AxeltheCorvikni @Spoony_Tech gaming on phones has a different mentality for sure. But part of the problem with Mario Run was that it was a mobile game that you paid for like a real game. Had that game been a real Mario style platformer, I suspect it would have seen more success.
I think people are used to certain kinds of games, the mobile format, being in this style, but only use it's the legacy of early phone apps that were super simple.
Yeah yeah... here comes all the uninformed gamers complaining about Mario Kart Tour even though you can get most characters free. Nobody forces you to buy any micro transactions.
I’ve spent $0 and I’m only missing a few characters and I’ve never felt like I’ve hit a pay wall or grind.
The game does so much things right in terms of game design that should be carried over to MK9, like course variations, powerups, characters, etc.
@Spoony_Tech to be honest.... casual gamers have been this way since the term was invented. They didn’t play a thing before mobile gaming was real.
And we’ve been trying to change this for at least a decade and a half. You can’t stop stupid people from spending their money in stupid ways.
@fafonio Can't say I like having any kind of timer or unlocks that I know can be bought. It's toxic to my enjoyment of what should be a "friendly" franchise AND, more importantly, it's pushing damaging gambling mental routines onto an audience so young that it tempts fate and could make them more likely to gamble to detrimental extremes in later years.
"It's only a small percentage that buy - probably the same percentage of the population that would gamble, anyway." Even if we had the stats in front of us and it were proven to be equal and not greater, even less, that still doesn't excuse the tempting.
"You bought trading cards when you were younger." Yeah, and I got physical goods and artwork that I enjoyed from them, and traded/sold them for other better or specific cards. At a financial loss? Sure. Didn't care. I bought a product that I could use with it.
That said, the younger crowd likes this because most of them don't have to pay for it and it's still a semi-reasonable unlock-over-time scheme like games of yore.
The title made me think the app was pricing itself differently based on the IP address of the player, which would have been a bit worrying.
@Spoony_Tech I don‘t like the term „right way“. There are different ways, and I think that everybody has to choose his or her way, not only of gaming. With thousands of free-to-play games on the app stores, I understand that you should lower the hurdle of price to target on the mass market. In my opinion, this is a natural development in a market of a practically infinite number of available games.
@Heavyarms55 depends on the game. For a mobile game? I definitely am more likely to download a free-to-start mobile game, I rarely will pay for a game for my phone. That’s what my consoles are for.
@Heavyarms55 Mario run actually had a kinda mean payment method. Android and iOS have family groups where you can share your purchases, so dad buys the game and the kids, mom, and that one cousin can play it too. A happy family.
Except it doesn't include dlc. Games that are essentially demos that can only be paid as an in-app unlock (so dlc) can't be shared this way.
To have a "premium" game you can't share on mobile is kinda undesirable.
@SalvorHardin I mean I enjoy it and I can’t be the only one. Mario Kart Tour is one of my favorite phone games so far. I don’t care about having the entire roster, considering I don’t use that many characters anyways. I’m getting more than enough content for free, and I’m not about to pay for a mobile game. That’s what my consoles are for.
It's so much better to actually make a one-time-purchase, and own the title, digitally, or more preferably, physically.
@Heavyarms55 That depends, I play Pokémon GO, Temple Run 2 and Jetpack Joyride for years and those games are fine.
But after trying Mario Kart Tour I and some friends took it's the worst (microtransaction wise) scummy game since Dungeon Keeper 2.
"But I play it and enjoy it without spending any money on it!" some will say, first enjoyment in a game is something that will differ per person, I hate FIFA games and consider them trash but someone else may love it, and that same goes for microtransactions in Mario Kart Tour and other such games, one may enjoy it anyhow but that brings us to point number 2, even if you enjoy it which is fine doesn't change the fact the way microtransactions are used in Mario Kart Tour (and other games doing it the same or comparable game) is outright scummy.
People may enjoy it without spending money but it doesn't change that fact, it's like playing a bad game and liking it because again that's a opinion that differs per person, but it still does not change the fact the bad game I enjoy, still is a bad game overall.
Mario Kart Tour it's microtransactions are scummy, even if some people enjoy it without spending any money on it.
@fafonio I've been playing Mario Kart Tour since it came out and there are many things you are leaving out of this comment so I feel it's only right to point them out.
1) There is a timer for new cups to appear and a limit to the amount of points you can earn per day. You can only play a set amount every day before you are no longer rewarded. Sure, you can try and chase superficial high scores but that's so hollow of a gaming experience.
2) the latter cups in a season have ridiculous score requirements to get all the stars in them. Most are only accessible to those who have the right vehicles, so those who have been playing their butts off...or those who just paid to have the characters.
3) There is a competitive scoring system in play and only those with fully maxed out vehicles, with fully maxed out copies of each of the characters can ever hope to properly compete. Since the seasons change constantly, you're constantly forced to buy new characters to stay in the top ranks.
4)The gacha system is...very bad. Sure if you keep pulling for items you'll eventually get what you want...but the "banners" are there for such a short time that it's very difficult for a free 2 play player to even get one character they want. If you have really rotten luck you might even feel further inclined to pay to make sure you get a character you want.
5)they locked an entire racing mode behind a subscription service, along with greatly rewarding those in the service over those who are not.
6) Multiplayer when???
So as you can see, as an informed gamer, Mario kart tour certainly does some things right...but it would be ignorant to say it doesn't do many things wrong.
@fafonio If you think that 'you dont have to pay for cosmetic items' is a good excuse for the manipulative tactics employed by free to play games then it is you who is uninformed.
It's a real shame to watch Nintendo jump on this, especially as they're doing so when the ethics of such games are being questioned by governments around the world. The games industry is in danger of being regulated because it cannot control its greed.
disguisting ...
@SalvorHardin
Its the sales figures that are convincing.
@BumpkinRich cosmetic items? What cosmetic items? Lol ... have you played the game?
Even if you refer to characters and vehicles as those cosmetic items... you don’t have to pay squat
@ATaco 1) the timer thing is ok... I don’t mind playing in small bursts. I mean... we all have a huge backlog of games... is this really a problem? Play something else while you wait.
2) You don’t need to 100% the latter cups. They are ridiculous, yes, but that’s what the challenges are for, and the daily challenges. I’ve never felt the need to get those stars in the latter cups to reap all the rewards.
3) I’ve been in 1st place in the ranking 3/4 times. And I mean.... I only have 2 rare characters. It’s not impossible, let alone hard to get into the top places.
4) The gacha system is pretty meh ... I’ll give you that... BUT THATS WHAT THE SHOP IS THERE FOR!!! .... I’ve seen all the characters going up for coins... and it’s easy to get them (races, challenges, logins, etc) .... they are ridiculous easy to get.
When I say uninformed gamers I mean exactly this... people just love to beetch about the micro transactions and gacha system... but they NEVER mention the shop... why is that? Because it may prove their hate wrong? What is so different from playing a console game and unlock stuff from a shop as you play along?
5) yeah, the subscription service is meh... but people were complaining about one payment for Mario Run.... then they try this... and it’s complaining all over. In its defense, at least they give you 2 free weeks... by that time you’re hooked or you know you’re not interested in the game or the service.
6) It’s coming
Thanks for your reply, sounds a bit more informed from other comments I’ve seen. But either I’m playing a different game than the internet.... or they haven’t played the game at all (or for a day) and just love to beetch and hate.
Also Nintendolife fueled this fire with their click bait articles
"Nintendo's App Monetisation Depends On The IP And Player Being Targeted"
Yep we know exactly who they are targeting with these forms of monetisation
@carlos82 stupid people?
They must think very little of Mario Kart players then.
As a single player game. I have enjoyed this more than mk8d. It just has much more content
@KingBowser86 Trading cards is always a comparison I see pop up...But none of these games let me trade items I've gotten from loot boxes with other players for specific items like I can with a trading card.
People and publishers are always so quick to draw the comparison to TCG's because, well, yea, we don't have an issue with those...But they always fail to add one of the major reasons we give those a pass, the 'trading' part of 'trading card game'...Probably because they know we'll easily get what we want that way instead of feeling pressured into continuous purchases.
@fafonio What do the racers give you other than cosmetic variety?
You say you don't have to 'pay squat' - how do Nintendo intend to make any money then?
@Heavyarms55 I don't like the model at all, but it's not that I've got a say in any of it! 😏
@BumpkinRich god... I’ll assume you haven’t even played the game and will try to answer in the most polite way.
Ok, let me explain quickly. Each character has their own item frenzy or powerup, making your point of them being just cosmetic changes null. For example, the powerup or special item of bowser is a Giant spiky shell, where Peach has a Mushroom Cannon.
Also, depending on the character you have weight, acceleration and speed.
They also add more points or raises your chances to obtain a frenzy in a race (like an unlimited powerup or item for a short time... kinda like a Star or golden mushroom in a traditional MK)
As to how do they expect to make money? With the horrible packs for whales who want everything easy or unlocked without playing. Or with the subscription. HOWEVER!!! They are not obligatory for you to advance through the game... they are not even remotely needed to unlock everything. You don’t even need to grind.
Just play races as you would with any MK game and you’ll unlock stuff through the coin store.
Now, this is what I mean with uninformed (no offense). But people act like the game is pointing a gun to your face to have fun when you can unlock stuff through the same means as you would in a console MK game.
Remember when you unlocked karts and gliders by collecting coins in MK8? How is this any different?
Im done explaining this game in these boards. Play the god damn game and judge for yourselves, not by reading stuff online.
There’s a pretty good chance you’re all adults, make your own informed opinions and don’t be sheep with whatever you read in an article title.
@fafonio You even capitalize the flaw in your logic.
I'll simplify it for you.
The game is entirely free HOWEVER if no one pays for it the game makes no money.
Your option is entirely based on the fact that YOU'RE paying nothing. Add to this that you openly dehumanise the people who are funding your gameplay by calling them whales (you also refer to them as stupid people and idiots in this thread)
Even if you can justify this utterly selfish response with yourself it is ultimately short-sighted. I've seen enough people think they are magically immune to the lure of free to play end up paying because they think they're clever. If they can keep you in the casino... eventually they'll make it back.
@StrikerXL you actually have, by ignoring titles that follow such monetization models.
Nintendo making these games is bad, but its worse that they are using algorithms to target the most susceptible/ vulnerable. Over the decades Nintendo have built a reputation as a company that gamers and parents can trust..... NO MORE. this is not my Nintendo.
@Spoony_Tech @Heavyarms55 Sadly the poison never goes away, just transforms into a different kind of poison. First there were loot boxes and as loot boxes are getting banned in countries, more companies are starting to use a battle pass structure instead which is still bad. Mario Kart Tour is basically a combination of loot boxes (using rubies for the pipe) and a battle pass (gold pass having exclusive rewards for each limited time tour).
Don't assume full price Nintendo games will be safe from this either, battle passes are common in full price multiplayer games nowadays.
The gOLD days are gone. "We want players to feel comfortable spending money"... Of course they do... As much as possible, only putting a limit on it for a bit so they look good. It's obvious that they're using the same tactics and if this bleeds into triple A first party games of theirs, then they WILL start to alienate ling term fans. I will be one such fan.
@KingBowser86 while i hate loot boxes (as it requires i spend more money or can’t unlock it via gameplay) this gambling argument is getting old. proper parenting can easily override anything a corp “teaches”. it’s only the parents that don’t have time to be parents (and shouldn’t have had kids in the first place) that this argument holds any weight
@fafonio Yea... no, out of all the Nintendo mobile games, this is probably the worst when comes to gacha. FEH is bad but at least you get a steady income of orbs. Mario Kart Tour doesn’t (you don’t get much from daily log ins and that is IF there are daily log ins from time), you can only earn like probably up to 5 red gem (equivalent to ONE Summon) after passing a few cups and to make matters worse, you have a chance to pick up Metal Mario or Musician Mario instead of Pauline and the like, yea no thank you. On the opening week, I think I only had made like a total of 10 summons and that’s when I grinded away to collect as many gem as possible which is super cheap ass on their part especially when it was the opening week.
If you think Mario Kart Tour is generous (which is not), wait til you play Dragalia Lost. That game is probably the most generous gacha game I’ve ever played. Premium currency for summoning for just about anything from completing missions, logging in and even when they have maintenance, reducing summoning cost from 500 premium currency to 200 per Summon, Summon Tickets Which comes in single and tenfold given as rewards, free Single or free tenfold summoning on banner for a set amount of days while the banner is on showcase and best of all, items that are handed out super generously that fully upgrade your gacha unit to max power (equivalent to FEH’s merge or Mario Kart’s character level).
@tekknik I mean, that helps, but it's still a matter of teaching very young minds that gambling (with their own or someone else's money) is the clear way to receive rewards and advancement in life, because "everyone is doing it." And it's not just Nintendo — seems like every major game company out there is doing these in one way or another. Parenting helps, but may be dismissed by the child compared to their competitive instinct (especially in an economic downturn with an increasing population).
@BumpkinRich man, I know what I need to know from your first response. I’m not going to keep arguing with a guy who hasn’t even played the game.
@fafonio If it looks like a turd and smells like a turd I'm not going to have a taste 'cos someone told you it was a brownie.
@Snow-Dust it’s generous as in every week you can get up to 50 rubies. I haven’t spent a single penny on this game. I recieved 25 rubies today with other stuff just by competing in the rank cup. It’s a fun game and has more tracks then any other Mario kart game and remember this is a mobile game and it’s free
@BumpkinRich I don't see this as greed. They missed out on several years of this. I think they would be foolish not to make as much money as possible on this.
What will be greedy is when we start seeing micro transactions in regular releases. I think Nintendo has been pretty good about DLC. BOTW was huge without the expansion packs. Smash has tons of content. Even the original Mk8 and mk8d were fair, IMO.
What I don't care for, but completely understand, is the rereleases from the WiiU. If I would have known that they would be released like this, I would have waited in many cases. Imo, they should have at least given these releases much more reason to buy in the second run.
@BumpkinRich hahahaha this is exactly what is wrong with the internet
"I'M GONNA GIVE MA OPINION WITHOUT ACTUALLY TRYING THE STUFF AND TRY TO LOOK AS IF I ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT"
LMAO!!! LE F****ING MAO!!!
Do you do the same with other games, movies or books? Hahahahaha ... sorry I busted you.
HERE COME THE CRITICS OF THE NEW ERA!!!
You're the EXACT TARGET I was calling UNINFORMED GAMER.
By saying this... I'm done. I think I caught the lot of you haters ... you haven't actually even played the game LOL!!!
@1UP_MARIO ... how do you see this guy? lol
@fafonio Is the caps lock trying to shout at me or just drown out the doubt in your own mind?
@1UP_MARIO
50 rubies is equivalent to 11 summons, you’ll. Have to play a bit over 2 months just to get 100 pulls, that is hardly generous.
If I remember correctly, FEH gave you around 200-300 (We’ll meet half way so 250) orbs per month and it is around 20 orbs to do a full summon so within a month, you get 120 summons + Summon tickets that gives you free Summon + free Summon on a new banner.
Dragalia Lost gives so many summon that I’ve practically lost count at this point but from my account, I’ve been saving for about 2 months now and I can do about 400 summons and there were like a 10 days in a row where we get to summon 10 free daily and even on weekends too where we got 10 free daily on 2 banners so that was four 10 free Summon on the weekend separate from the 10 days in a row.
This is not counting that FEH and Dragalia’s gacha only have the premium stuff like FEH with the units and Dragalia with the adventurers and dragons (used to have prints as well but they removed it from the gacha and made it you can buy it with in-game currency which is SUPER generous).
Mario is littered with craps like the kart and the glider which unless you are trying to win the pvp content, you wouldn’t really care too much. I would say that one good thing about Mario Kart’s Tour’s gacha is that it will guarantee you get the featured things if you pull 100 times which I have to admit it is pretty generous but the slow rate you get your premium currency and the amount of times you need to pull X character to max them out to full power is absurd. FEH requires 11 copies max of the same unit to max them while Dragalia only need you to pull once for the Adventurer and you can max them already but the dragons need 5 copies total but as I said before, you get an item in game that can help them get to max power. I’ve been playing since February and I have 5 dragons to max powers just from those items alone. Assuming the platinum characters only need 1 copy (can’t find this information anywhere) for each level, you’ll need 6 copies total to have them at full skill level which is better than FEH But nowhere near Dragalia.
Also comparing to other Nintendo Mobile Games. I haven’t played Animal Crossing since launch but even I remember the leaf tickets were pretty generous in that game that I was able to get KK’s chair and Tom Nook’s chair. Dr Mario uses both gold coins and diamonds to unlock characters and supports which is pretty nice that they let you use regular currency to summon. I haven’t played Pokémon Masters but I heard that thing is greedy beyond control.
Overall, Mario Kart Tour’s only good point regarding the paid model/gacha is that the gacha will guarantee what you want after 100 summons and the platinum are all clones/alts except Pauline (so you can get your favourite who is usually ranked gold with coins from the shop if they are featured on that day), but everything else is just not good.
@rockodoodle If your justification for this is that Nintendo didn't do it for years then you also have to accept this in their full price games because that same argument applies.
For example -
Ubisoft have been offering 'time saving' xp boosts for years why shouldn't the new Zelda let you buy Rupees - it's the players choice, you don't have to buy them.
@Snow-Dust why use the pull your not guaranteed a player. I just buy the players from the shop and use rubies on gold rush
@BumpkinRich ouch... directly in my argument. What a good comeback kid. Lol
Don’t you have Some Internet reviews to do about movies you haven’t seen and games you haven’t played or books you haven’t read?
We are all dying to know what your imagination thinks about the content in hand.
@SalvorHardin,
You just do not get it, mobile gamers have no issues with this type of buisness model, they will se paying £50 for a videogame a waste of money, why does everything Nintendo do have top revolve around the core hobby gamer?, why can't we just realize this is just not intended for us.
@1UP_MARIO I wanted Pauline but I didn’t get her and it was opening week so I was stuck between a rock and a hard place.
I stopped playing Mario Kart Tour after the first cup ended because when I logged in, they didn’t have login bonuses which I thought was super cheap of them.
It’s easier said than done about not summoning. I just checked and there is Halloween Rosalina which I would love to get because Rosalina is awesome but hey, game hasn’t even been out for 2 months yet so you can’t possibly have the 100 summons yet and this is assuming you come in high ranking for every cup. I got first on my first cup but then I couldn’t even touch top 5 when I got up to tier 4 so hey, no rubies for me.
@Snow-Dust the ranks get easier ... it all depends who are you matched with in your rank. I’ve been in 1st place in 3 out of four ranked cups. Also, just have patience, Pauline has been in the shop... as well as Halloween Rosalina will be down the line.
I’ll give you that the login bonuses ending after the first 10 days in a tour is pretty cheap. It should be everyday. But they do reset with each tour.
@fafonio I mean I’m not level 12 yet where the third tier (level 10 atm) on the shop opens so I would assume that’s where the platinum characters appear. If that’s the case then I feel a bit more motivated to play the game again. Also knowing that you can actually buy Platinum characters makes this game slightly more generous now, I mean the rubies handouts are still cheap but at least it isn’t FEH greedy level.
@Snow-Dust what’s good about Pauline. She was only good for one or two tracks. She was rare but wasn’t really a allrounder.
Sorry if I didn’t answer in full in the last post, it was a long reply and I just glanced over it.
I’ve been playing this game since launch and actually have ranked always number 1 despite not paying anything. Maybe I’m lucky but it’s a short burst of fun which competes with Tetris on my phone
@fafonio You have told me everything I need to know. In your own words you have to be stupid to spend any money on it.
Not a great review is it.
I am very happy with Mario Kart Tour. I have got another Mario Kart game for free. You don't need to spend any money and you can still get a lot from the game. I have got almost every single character and I don't play that often.
So Furukawa is the problem then? The guy who wants kids to gamble in Nintendo's games? He should be ashamed and fired
@fafonio @Snow-Dust platinum characters can appear on any row in the shop, unlocking them all just gives much chance of them appearing. I’ve played every day and haven’t had Pauline in mine, but I’ve had other platinum characters, it seems to be random for each person. But save your coins and then when your favorite character is in the shop you get lucky.
As for rankings? I got 1st on every week in my group EXCEPT the second week, where I got 5th. It really comes down to who you’re grouped with, and the more weeks you play the more evenly matched tiers will get. I mean, think about it like this: everyone started at tier 1, so by week 2 about 15% of players would be tier 4 (the ones that came in 1st-3rd the previous week). 15% is pretty large so odds are many people were still grouped with people out of their league. For reference, 15% would be tier 3, 20% would be tier 2, and 50% would be tier 1. Another week later and 2.25% would be tier 7, 5.5% would be tier 6, 8.25% would tier 5, and so on... assuming there was no new players (and there are, which makes the numbers of higher tiers actually lower). The numbers will thin out and your odds of encountering players vastly above you in skill/resources become much smaller. Getting 1st every week will likely skyrocket you to face whales you can’t compete with, but the longer the game goes, the less common that will be, so it’s okay to not win every week, it makes you more likely to win in later weeks. Also, at the higher tiers the prizes start getting better, I’ve already reached a point where placing 6th gets you the same rewards that placing 3rd last week would get, which is good because eventually you’ll reach the point where you rarely go up more than a tier or two and you don’t then have to worry about not getting many rewards. Also, less skilled players will be going up too so that doesn’t in any way mean you’ll just keep facing harder players as you go up, if anything you’ll face players that are consistently closer to you in abilities. Also, players stop playing all the time but from what I see you can’t go down tiers, so it won’t be uncommon to have players in your group with scores of 0 (or just low scores in general if they stopped that week), which will only become more common. I recommend not to give up just because you can’t consistently get in the top 3, ranked matches in games take time to balance while players work their way up from the same starting point. I hope that all made sense!
@1UP_MARIO Pauline’s upside is her special item, which is one of the best ones to be honest. She still gets some cups where she can use three items, and when her special item is frenzied it gets busted.
That being said, tour exclusive characters will likely only be very relevant in the tours they appear in. They’re more like trophies than anything else, and people want the characters they like. I would’ve still wanted Pauline even if she was the worst character in the game, simply because I like the character and for once she’s playable in a game. And that’s the biggest reason to use rubies on the gacha, the feature characters and karts have boosted odds, so if you want them, your best chance is there over waiting and hoping they appear in your shop. Besides, making coins is easy enough without coin rush, I still have been able to buy a lot in the shop and rarely use coin rush. Coin rush gives you a little more control over what you get, but overall you on average will get your money’s worth on the gacha, the shop is good for filling the gaps in your roster.
@ShadJV great post 👍🏻
I think she was only really useful for the New York tour but your right the spotlight characters are really trophy’s. I’ve only used the 10pipe once and wasn’t impressed so now I just use coin rush x10. I have bought some rare gliders and cars from the shop and they were 12000 coins but at least it’s guaranteed.
@ShadJV greatly explained
@TheLightSpirit ouch... ohh wait... no argument, no reason to engage with you.
Do you even know how to discuss?
@Grumblevolcano You're right. This is one area where Nintendo's reluctance to modernize has been a Godsend, but Nintendo has investors and corporate executives too and corporations are designed to put profit above all else.
@1UP_MARIO It’s not about good or not good when it comes to a franchise like Mario, it is about do you like the character or not and I simply like the character enough to want it.
@Snow-Dust makes sense. Hopefully you give it another chance. It’s a nice time waster
@1UP_MARIO I’ll give it another try but so far Dragalia Lost eats up most of my mobile time, yesterday I was looking at the pricing for Dr Mario and decided to go for a pull and I got Rosalina so I’ll be playing that game again. We’ll have to see where Mario Kart can squeeze in.
@BumpkinRich what bothers me way more than their monetization of a mobile game is that their is not a MK9 yet!
@Heavyarms55
The old Nintendo leadership isn't in control anymore. Old Nintendo leadership was reluctant to do something that would hurt their model of selling hardware. The best years for Nintendo were when they were making lots of $ selling Wii and DS systems at big profits. They thought if they moved to mobile that they would lose the hardware cash cow as people wouldn't find the need to buy hardware to access their exclusive software. They kinda re-prioritized after they lost a bunch of money on Wii U hardware and decided they needed to be more diversified so a failure wouldn't be catastrophic.
So yes, they were reluctant. But only because they thought it would ruin their business model. Not because they were altruistic and wanted to do what was right for the gamer.
Gacha gaming is basically like a bad carnival game where the prize seems plausible but really it's just there to let the carnie swindle people out of more money while they try to impress their significant other. (Step right up! Get your Metro Mario folks!)
I personally found MK Tour to be odious and Dr Mario World yawn inducing. Dragalia Lost was more generous with the currency but hideously sexualized. Nintendo may be successful with the Switch and I am enjoying it, but their mobile strategy and games so far have been rough.
I will continue to vote with my dollars.
I don't know how you guys are scoring so highly in the cup rankings? Maybe it's because you're in the lower tiers still? But I'm tier 9 now and it's getting difficult to advance. You certainly DO need the proper combinations to continue to score highly because guess what? You start facing whales in those tiers. It's all well and good but when you get first place and that doesn't even matter, what's the point of the game?
This isn't a skill based game at all and that's probably why so many casuals call it the best game. Oh...and adding a few ramps or playing the track in reverse doesn't make it new. Just so you know.
@KingBowser86 again, proper parenting. i specifically remember my parents telling me how bad it is to gamble, and to this day i don’t do it entirely because of their talks. if you are the type of parent that lets games and shows educate your children because you’re “too busy with work” then expect a messed up child
@tekknik "Parenting helps, but may be dismissed by the child compared to their competitive instinct (especially in an economic downturn with an increasing population)."
i never play games on android. and i never will.
@Heavyarms55 parents who gives 2 flying farts what their offspring consumes as long as it isn’t money out of their pockets. Initially. But then the brats starts badgering them for smurf berries and v-bucks. And they cave in.
Also weirdly competitive people who think they can “beat” slot machines.
@Tao maybe they forget the OG MTX grand father: coin operated games. You pay to play 5-10 minutes. But we have this nice “Continue” feature also, at cost ofc. I grew up on that, but that doesn’t mean I still want it today.
@phamster People who think they can beat the slots are suffering from gambling addiction and self delusion. It's really quite sad.
Don't get me started on parents who just hand the kid an iPad to keep him or her quiet. They are the same kind of people who blame the school for the kid never doing homework or studying and then are shocked when they bring home a report card full of failing grades.
