It’s a good game. Doesn’t deserve the hate it got. And even does some things better than their console cousins.
Haven’t even downloaded it yet and not sure I will. Maybe if I had a better phone my I phone 5s gets too hot and battery is always flat so meh.
@fafonio bad game with bad monetisation
@May_Nyan completed all races, never spent a dime on it, never grinded. Never felt the controls got in the way when I turned the steering off and just drift.
The monetization complaints are only for the people who played the game once.
You don’t need to pay a single cent to unlock characters or advance through the tours, so I don’t understand how is the “monetisation” that serious of a problem.
As I said, those complaints come from the easily impressed by the media and cheap blogs.
@fafonio It deserves all the hate it gets, and then some. I wish media would stop covering this game. But hey, all for the clicks, right?
Change the control style then i will want to play.....
Choco island and Mario circuit from the 3ds is new too.
Fantastic game and does a lot of things better than 8 deluxe. Haven’t spent any money and will not but still came up number 1 in the tour tournaments. 20 rubies and others as gift.
@fafonio completely agree
@fafonio I'm right there with you. You don't NEED to do any of the IAP stuff to enjoy this game. Those are just there for the whales.
Realistically, Nintendo said up front that they didn't want their mobile games to be a full experience, just enough of one to get people who haven't already to check out the equivalent games on the Switch. More likely than no this game isn't meant for the more general gaming audience who already enjoy their games so it makes sense that most people on fan sites like this don't like it. When people stop expecting it to be something it's not it becomes a more enjoyable game.
@AlternateButtons you don’t pay for Mario. You can unlock him through the pipe or just go to the game shop and buy him for 3000 coins which you earn by racing or the just give you. Play the game first then make a opinion
@fafonio you had the special challenges, leverling up, finishing a cup and the daily log in bonus to get rubees. They removed the of those and limit getting coins to 300 a day.
They've just renewed all gliders, racers and karts. So you have no advantages left and practically no way to shoot the pipe. Your gonna feel that Gatcha problem now, I promise!
@AlternateButtons that’s exactly why all of you are easily mind wiped by gaming sites. Guess what? I have Mario and haven’t paid a single cent.
Also, if you people feel like it preys on weak minds, don’t worry, we have Fortnite, every other EA game and countless others. It’s not like those people will be safe anyways. Learn how to spend your money.
I have a Mario Kart experience with constant updates, totally free, grinding free and constantly get 1st places even in 150cc because I only use drifting controls.
What is funny is that none of you seem to give me any reason or argument as why it’s a bad game, like if none of you actually played the game at all or maybe the first cup.
@garfreek not true... I’m in the fifth cup and I’ve just unlocked Wario and Mortimer (again, using rubies and not spending a single cent through the pipe) Also by completing said challenges to collect more suns.
Is it just me that I have around 8 karts, 5 gliders, and 12 characters by spending nothing? It’s like I’m playing a different game than the rest of the internet.
Also, if you feel like you’re getting stuck... just use the two week free trial and then cancel it .... you get all the extra stuff during those 2 weeks, if you feel like getting an extra push STILL FREE.
@AlternateButtons didn’t you read anything I posted? You don’t need to pay a cent for getting Mario. Your reason means squat since it isn’t true.
Ohh also, thanks, I know it’s a watered version but something I can play in 2 minute breaks and free
It’s a great Mario Kart experience in its own right and what can be done on mobile even though I hate mobile gaming.
What it does better than Deluxe is the remixing of tracks. They constantly change stuff up which makes it feel like you’re always playing a slightly different track. Also now we have challenges, new items, and special mission courses.
Also, enjoy playing the same tracks that I played 6 years ago on my WiiU. I’m moving to new tracks, items and characters in this game. You can keep the same game I played for years in MK8
@AlternateButtons hahaha you don’t have to pay for rubies!!! Wow, you just like to show us that you know next to nothing about this game.
@AlternateButtons sorry buddy. You do realise Mario kart tour is a mobile game. Your comparing a mobile game to a Nintendo switch game. Carry on playing your new Mario kart 8 deluxe and let everyone enjoy the new Mario kart. It’s been over 5 years and I’m bored of deluxe
@AlternateButtons there is the OPTION to pay for him. Or get him with in game coins which you get just y playing the game.
You are competing with bots in this game, what's the point?
I recently went back to play MarioKart 7 on the 3DS, there's still A LOT of players online. Not bad for an 8 years old game. The best thing is: unlike Switch, it's free to play online, and so much better than this mobile crap.
@AlternateButtons did you try turning the steering off and play just by drifting like any good Mario Kart player does? It plays perfectly fine.
It’s funny you say we act all high and mighty but you’re the one that is telling us we cant have fun with a game we like. Ohhh the irony.
At least we played the game and can make a judgement .... you’re just complaining about something you read on the internet. Lol
@AlternateButtons maybe it’s not for you. You don’t need chance. You just go to the game shop and buy Mario. No chance needed.
It’s a mobile smart phone game you play for minutes. It’s not meant to be a console equivalent. However it does a lot of stuff better
@nintendolie this is free and more people carry their smartphone than carry a 3ds with them.
What’s the point of Mario kart double dash. You just race with bots. It’s still my fave Mario kart
@Luigi-number1 Double Dash has local multiplayer.
Shelling the bots has no gratification, all the bomb/shell frenzy in this mobile game is not going to make someone curse or angry, what's the point?
@nintendolie Mario kart tour is a mobile game. You can’t attach two controllers on it.
Wow, all this hate and smack talk towards a mobile game says a lot. Sucks to be you that you only played it once and quickly called it quits. I on the other hand have been playing it since it came out a couple weeks ago. Unless you've forgotten, Nintendo isn't the first and won't be the last company to do the gacha box baloney so quit making them out to be the bad guy. Also, would you rather they just have everything out free at once with zero updates or would you rather enjoy it and be able to unlock new things as you go along? Again, as mentioned above, you don't have to spend real money to get anything. Also in terms of the whole being to play online thing, Nintendo has done things differently than what Sony and Microsoft have done over the years so for them to start having to charge for online isn't the end of the world, get over it.
I wish games we spent $80 for 3DS and Switch got this kind of support...Especially Mario Kart
@fafonio,
Ah but you forget, people on here hate mobile games with their payment models, even though the majority of people who download and play these games have no issues with them, it's a classic example of being outraged for the sake of it, Nintendo's console buisness does not operate this way because it's not catering for the same demographic, so why these people keep moaning at a game not designed for them is beyond me.
@mallowhprain02,
You have to undertand where the dislike comes from, many console owners see the growing mobile market as a threat to their hobby, as it's only a matter of time, in their eyes at least, until the major console players jump onto the same system, this is of course not going to happen as there is a lot of money made in the core market even though the userbase stays pretty much the same each and every generation, but with Dlc, expansion packs and season passes their is a lot of revinue, of course all of this extra paid for content is o.k when it's on a console.
I have been playing since day 1 and the game feels like a grind to level up to clear tracks and pay to win with the pipe to get characters, karts & kites you need to pass some levels.
Some levels wants 10.000 points to clear and if you dont have the right character there is no chance for the harder stages.
I enjoy the game but it's started feeling like a pay to win grind the more someone pays to pull the pipe and see if they win the characters or karts they need is such a thin chance.
I do enjoy the game though but the after grind gets annoying and for £5 a month apple arcade is a better deal.
to note missing from the course list, mario circuit 2 is also included this round
edit: and choco island 2, maybe more tracks from here will come in the next console version, always love me some more updated snes tracks
edit2: think that makes only 2 course style from the snes still not remade, vanilla lake, tragically ignored in every collection of retro tracks
@nintendolie
I used to play Mario Kart 7 online, but then people started "snaking." It's a cheap move that pretty much ruined the online aspect of it for me.
@AlternateButtons when has any mario kart game ever been available for free?
The game is fun, though it feels kind of on the rails at times. My only other complaint is that the micro transactions are aggressive, especially after the update.
Haven't downloaded the update yet. Curious to see if it's really a "start from scratch", how much of our stuff carries over that we already have - stars, coins, carts etc. @garfreek said a bunch of stuff that doesn't look too good, though I'm not exactly sure how to read this "They removed the of those". Not sure if "the" is supposed to be "some", "all', "one" or "none", just that it must be a typo or lost to me in translation but it sounds like a bad update, much more than just starting a new tour.
As for all the "free-to-start" hate poor @fafonio and a couple of others have had to put up with, a word of advice, never be the first post, they'll run you off the site. Also, monetisation seems to only be allowed in "$60-to-start" games, not "free-to-start". No, I don't understand it either, but if you charge $60 to start like Destiny 2 then it's ok to charge $40 for a season pass and sell all kinds of weapons, skins and such, but it's bad when the game is free to start. Makes no sense but that's how the majority here feel.
@BarefootBowser,
I understand your point, but if you think Nintendo and other companies are in it for the good of their health then you are going to be dissapointed, and my point remains you can get upset paying for anything if you do not see the value in it personally, but as I pointed out most mobile gamers will not even gove this a second thought, I personally do not see a value in the model or the game, but it's aint designed for me, we do seem to have great difficulty on here seeing outside of our own personal tastes.
@rjejr,
Double standards at their finest.
@rjejr you keep everything except stars as they are the progression through the current tour anyway, you dont lose any drivers or karts cause that would be stupid, lol
Edit: daily bonus is still there, it just stopped before as it doesnt run for the full length of 2 weeks, but does give a new one at start of tour, challenges are still there, even had before how many days were remaining on them
A re-release/remaster of Double Dash, or a full new entry. Otherwise I'll stick with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart 7 (yes, I still play on the 3DS).
YET LUIGI IS NOWHERE? HOW DO YOU MESS THIS UP?
Oh, hell, they brought back a Rainbow Road and it has to be the SNES one!
I wanted the awesome MK7 Rainbow Road brought back! I have nothing but hatred for the SNES version of the track.
£39 for the Diddy Kong pack with 1 f#$%ing character included, absolute disgrace of a game
Where the heck is Luigi
@MarioVoreFan he'll be £50 next month
@carlos82 It's Luigi's month, they need to release him this month, i know they want money and all but it's Luigi's Month!
still no luigi? wow
I'm surprised the "Where's Waluigi?" comments haven't been as popular on this one.
Though Luigi is clearly a glaring omission.
For everyone. Luigi is coming next week with the new tour. 6 more days
The courses look lovely but i can't control the damn thing.
@AlternateButtons I was replying to your comment:
'11AlternateButtons10:02am
@fafonio Better huh? Sorry but a MARIO Kart game where I have to pay for just a chance to unlock MARIO? That's just the definition of awful.'
I asked; what Mario Kart game has ever been free? And the answer is none. You have never been able to play Mario Kart for free. So your point is moot.
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019-10-09-mario-kart-tour-update-includes-atrocious-gbp39-pack-which-unlocks-diddy-kong
What a pile of krap!
@PBandSmelly They're waiting for Luigi's Mansion 3 to have a Halloween event for the game. Maybe even E Gadd as the Pauline of that event
@PBandSmelly Keep in mind I don't know that for a 100% fact, it just makes sense
@jco83 sigh....... you don’t have to pay a freaking cent to get Mario... it’s Just that it’s not unlocked from the beginning! You can get him for free, you just go to the shop and buy him with the gold coins you find in the tracks.
Please play the freaking game before criticizing.
Ohh and none? Then what have I been playing this past 3 weeks for free then? Huh?
@fafonio I think most of these people haven’t payed Mario kart 7 or 8/deluxe where you have to collect coins to unlock karts tyres gliders. It’s basically the same
@fafonio no, played it more than once and I literally don't care what media or blogs think. my opinion is my own and I didn't like it, didn't like the gameplay, controls, having to redo the same missions to unlock more, having characters locked behind gacha with threat of missing them.
It can be a fun game that is still not worth spending any money on.
@fafonio
Why are you bigging up a scummy free to play game consumed with microtransactions?
It is OK to love Nintendo but at the same time rightfully condemn them for their scummy tactics like with this disgrace of a game.
Otherwise you just sound like a bit of a sycophant.
That applies to everyone else defending it.
@sandman89
Do not bother changing the idea here, here is the internet, here hating for simply hating is the point, whether or not it is the right reason, just have to look for something to show contempt.
Don't worry, I don't hate the game, but really the controls are awful, with a patch they could correct it; and the monetization, the truth, there are more games that also "abuse" how to get money from the players, but in this Mario Kart game, Nintendo really got to EA and Gameloft levels, Nintendo needs to adjust the price of rubies and adjust the Gatcha a little, sometimes the probability of getting something new is exaggerated and ridiculously low ...; from there, the game is great.
@May_Nyan
Great Game, Bad Controls, Awful Monetisation
fixed
@SBandy no, you are being the ignorant here. I don’t have to defend anything, I’m playing this game, having fun, not spending a dime on it. Defending it would be like “yeah, you have to spend $500dlls but there’s a real reason for that and it’s worth it”
My point here is “I’ve been playing this game for 3 weeks and I haven’t spend a single cent and unlocking stuff every play”. That’s not defending, that’s saying a simple truth which you don’t want to see.
Play the game and then create your own opinion ... don’t be a sheep to what you read on the internet. As simple as that.
@fafonio
You are a fool.
A sheep is one who follows their favourite game company and defends them at all times.
"I am having a good time so it doesn't matter how many other people may get hooked on this game's purposefully addictive gambling mechanics."
You are the very definition of a sheep.
I have standards and lines I will not cross. You are a shill. Nothing more, nothing less.
@SBandy learn to spend your money well. Those who fall on microtransactions won’t be their first game who fools them, won’t be the last.
Doesn’t take away that the game DOESNT NEED you to pay to advance. THATS THE POINT.
I don’t really care how Nintendo makes their money. You can’t protect all the stupid people in the world. If they want to spend their money in the stupidest of ways, let them.
@fafonio
No the point is it wants you to you.
The game is actively hoping to bring out the addict in you so you spend spend spend on it. It is a game made by Nintendo that wants to create people who develop a habit of spending money that they don't have to so it can get its "whales". Aww hell let us call them what they are: gambling addicts.
It is a disgraceful plan and as someone who loves Nintendo I find it disgusting. Anyone in the right frame of mind would too.
I wouldn't go near this piece of rubbish with a barge pole. I have standards.
But apparently I am the sheep....
@SBandy you sound like a very angry person. I’m sorry a game is destroying your life. Boohoo.
@fafonio
You have commented 11 times in this thread about this game. Sounds like you need to get the life bucko.
And also sort out your priorities and stop worshipping a videogame company you pathetic sod.
@SBandy and the btch kept going and going and going and going. I’lo be happy to click that ignore button. Bye
@fafonio
Click it. You can't actuallly counter my points because deep down you know I am right.
I don't understand how Asphalt 9 - the mobile racer with ACTUAL predatory microtransactions, a greedy energy system and a history of literal pay-to-win escapades - gets a pass, yet Mario Kart Tour - the mobile racer that literally hands you every piece of content on a silver platter, has no energy system, and of which the rarity component of gacha-earned items have a very minimal effect on performance - is the most vile, trite piece of garbage.
I've been playing since launch without spending a single dime, got Mario, Metal Mario, Dry Bowser, Peach, Toadette, and now Wario, and yet Shy Guy in a Shroomer with the default glider brings just about the same experience and even bigger multipliers on my favorite tracks. In fact, most of the tracks so far have bonuses equally distributed between all rarities overall, so the "premium" aspect doesn't even hold much of an argument. If anything, the unlock progression, which feels a lot like a battle pass (akin to what was implemented in CTR:NF), makes sure you always get something nice. They handed you Daisy in the last tour for simply doing average, so I cannot complain.
The only bad things I can say about it are that it's got no multi (yet) and it feels just as terrible to get Mario Karted (ie. robbed) here as it does in literally every other game past Double Dash. Also, drift-only controls? Instead of just having a UI overlay for jumping? Having the choice between steering-only and drift-only feels wrong, so I hope they change that eventually.
As someone who's actually whaled in mobile games and had to seek counseling, this game is nothing but generous. lol
If you compare this chat thread to the official Mario Kart Tour
Twitter comments there is a huge difference. First, the people on Twitter are complaining about the lack of multiplayer/asking for multiplayer and asking for characters(Luigi or Waluigi). The people here are complaining about the monetizations.
@PBandSmelly @MarioVoreFan @sheriff
Luigi (and maybe E. Gadd and probably the polturgust gust 4000 kart) will most likely come in 2 weeks for the next tour to promote luigi's mansion 3. this is because LM3 releases in that tour so you'll probably have to wait another 2 weeks for the chance to get Luigi
I like the game, but I would like it more if I can Steer and Drift anytime instead of choosing which one I prefer :/
@fafonio I was replying to the other person complaining that Mario isn't available from the beginning. My point was that no Mario Kart game has ever been available for free. So they've got nothing to complain about.
Your point is also fair. Although I think you misunderstood my comment ☺
@jco83 sorry man, there were so many messages.
So when are they going to remove the loot boxes and microtransactions, make a paid pro version, and allow it work OFFLINE? Oh, never? Fine, I'll just play Mario Kart 8 DX on my Switch and wait for an actual sequel
@rjejr that extra "the" stood for all.
They basically removed almost all ways to get rubees. You also get a lot less money as times goes on, which means you can't buy a lot of stuff either.
So you get less stars and thus even less rubees and coins....
The game is stacked immensely against you. But it's fun while it's lasting!
@fafonio
But dude, you just said you used the free trial subscription. You can do that once, and then it stops. Believe me, if you don't pay the subscription, you're gonna hit a wall!
@garfreek that could be true. But in the meantime I’ll enjoy the game.
@fafonio yes there was ! 👍😆
