Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is looking better and better each time we see it, and while it only had a relatively small cameo in the big September Nintendo Direct, the show did give us a good look at some of the games and modes you'll be able to enjoy.
As such, we thought we'd go over them - and pretty much everything else we know - for you here. Strap yourselves in!
3D Events
No Mario & Sonic game would be complete without the series' standard 3D events. Just like past games, these are the Olympic events you can expect to play with Mario and friends in their usual, HD, cartoony aesthetic.

2D Events
As we've covered previously, the game will also benefit from new, 2D events which hark back to the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games. Your playable characters and your surroundings will see a retro transformation for these events.

Dream Events
Dream Events are back and Sega has introduced three all-new activities that you'll be able to enjoy in the full game. We have more details on these right here!
- Dream Shooting
- Dream Karate
- Dream Racing
Story Mode
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 will also include a Story Mode. We've got an official description and a screenshot for you below; we like the sound of that Tokyo 64 games console.
Dr. Eggman and Bowser have formed a powerful alliance in their latest plot to defeat Mario and Sonic. Their plan? Unleashing Eggman's latest invention, the Tokyo '64 console that contains the power to pull users inside a 2D game themed around the Olympic Games Tokyo 1964.
Will they ever safely return from the game world of 1964, and if so, how?
Minigames and More
You'll also find minigames and Olympic Games trivia waiting for you to discover. The full list of minigames hasn't been revealed just yet, but we do have another official blurb straight from Sega which tells us a little more.
Experience lots of fun minigames that use familiar Tokyo landmarks in unexpected ways, like climbing Tokyo Tower, finding the yellow Toad at Shibuya Scramble, and seeing if Sonic can out-race a bullet train. You'll also learn fun trivia (Did you know the new stadium roof is made of material collected from each prefecture of Japan?), unlock hidden characters, and explore the different venues of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and 1964!

I really hope they add more characters
I like the spread of events. A fan wiki I came across suggested Golf would be on the events list, which could have made it fantastic, but obviously it's not to be. Still looking forward to it though - great multiplayer offering here.
I’m actually gonna get this one!
@BKPyrexx they're adding more. The entire roster got leaked. You can look it up if you would like.
Rugby sevens im getting this
OOO old version strikes back dun dunnn
Looking pretty cool but was it really that difficult to give ALL characters some clothing for the events? I dunno, it's disappointing to me to see most characters in fun new outfits but then Bowser, Bowser Jr, DK, Yoshi, and Metal Sonic don't. ..this last one is at least kind of understandable but come on! At least the Mario cast of these have already worn different outfits before.
..oh well. I'm still gonna get this and rock my Yoshi anyway.
Needs Goomba for that wall climbing!
Seems like a huge amount of effort is being made with this game; the 3d/2d modes are looking great, and there's even a story mode. Should be a really fun family game.
This is looking likely to be the best Mario and Sonic game yet.... Fingers crossed!!
I'm sorry to ask, but... is the Mii still available as a character in the game? Does anybody know?
Looking forward to the football/soccer event, loved Mario Striker back in the day, so it'll be kinda cool to use the characters in a soccer event again.
Boxing is the only sport i really like.
But, i will never ever want to touch Soccer. I never like Soccer.
I hope they add more Dream Events. So far, there’s only 3 Dream Events in this game. I hope they add more Dream Events because those were the best part of the game.
Looks awesome, especially the retro games.
@SpicyBurrito16 What Dream Events have they announced?
@LinktotheFuture Dream Racing, Dream Shooting, and Dream Karate.
@SpicyBurrito16 Cool. I think there will be more, still a ways to go until the game comes out.
100% pre-ordered it for the 2D events.
2d events look cool but I wish they used 16 bit mario characters!
Really like all the variety included here.
