UK chart data is now in for the week ending 14th September, revealing that new Nintendo Switch exclusive Daemon X Machina has debuted in 19th place, failing to match Astral Chain's recent number one success.
A splattering of major new releases on other platforms has seen Nintendo take a bit of a backseat this week. The highest charting Nintendo game this time around was Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in sixth place, down from fourth last week.
Elsewhere, the majority of Spyro Reignited Trilogy's sales are still coming from the new Switch version (81% this week), and Astral Chain has just managed to stay in the top 20 in 18th place.
Here's a look at this week's top twenty all formats chart:

Well done to Greedfall. I don't think that developer has ever had a release in the retail charts like that before.
Wow Daemon X Machina seems to have performed poorly - enjoying the game so far
@Dezzy
Agree. Great game that puts bigger titles like Skyrim to shame. Shame deamon didn't make it in too the top ten, so expected it too drop in price quickly, mind if I hadn't bought it i know it would of sold better and been sold out
Why Konami can't support Nintendo....i want PES
No surprise at all. Big weeks of releases. Daemon X Machina never stood a chance.
That’s a good result for Gears 5 considering it’s on Game Pass. It’s a really good game. Haven’t played Borderlands 3 but sounds like it deserves its success.
Deamon x Machina did better than I thought it would.
Astral Chain still having a very respectful showing.
I find it funny seeing "Greed" directly under NBA 2K20.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a beast.
Gears 5 sold a quarter of what Gears 4 did but hard to judge because of gamepass as no doubt majority picked it up through that.
Links Awakening currently sold out on Amazon UK and I can see that being number 1 next week.
Quite an achievement for Spyro!
And Crash as well!
Daemon x Machina would have the toughest start even among the Switch faithful. A Platinum Games game the week before and a Zelda game the week after. It’s almost like Titanfall II; although the difference being DxM is at least a different genre.
What's the point of releasing so many games on the same day? Greedfall would definitely interest me at a different time, but now it will be discounted in weeks. Borderlands 3 takes priority.
Not surprised about DxM. The demos didnt impress, reviews werent amazing, people are still catching up on other Nintendo published titles from last couple of months plus Zelda is out this week so I'm saving my cash for that, theres been big eShop releases and its quite a niche game. Didnt stand a chance.
I think Daemon did alright with all the titles it was up against, plus being a game that’s not for everyone’s tastes.
Meanwhile, gamers keep replacing their misplaced copies of GTAV.
Well its the fault of marvelous that deamonxmachina sells poorly
they copystrike everybody who shows only a little bit of gameplay (they even put down sega's tgs stream accidenty)
which means they copystrike free advertisement
At this point doesn’t every switch owner have 2 copies of Mario Kart 8? I love the game, but seriously how is it still in the top ten a couple years later?!
@mariomaster96 Really? , that hurts especially since daemon x machinas were pretty open to the community. 2 demis, etc.
@SBandy LA is going to fry this chart. Cant wait to see it crowned on that No1 spot.
@tech7 sadly yes, just watch the youtube channel "Spawn Wave" (or "Spawn Wave Plus")
he uploaded two videos on this topic
It's that time of year.
Reviews be darned. Spent the weekend playing Daemon x Machina. Great game for those that enjoy mecha combat. My 2019 game of the year.
Can’t wait to get into Daemon Ex. It’s a niche game and half the sites that reviewed it don’t get it.
Might be way too early to judge DxM. I mean, it's obviously not game of the year material but lots of games gain their profitability over time. That it's in the top 20 at all is achievement enough for a niche game such as that, and it might have a long tail when people get into multiplayer. Just because a game doesn't chart doesn't mean it's not making money.
Impressed that a game like Dameon X Machina made it into the top 20. It’s a good game, I’m enjoying it more than I thought and it deserves to be in there.
Was going to buy Gears 5 at launch but decided to wait for the inevitable massive price drop in November, it's only 2 months and my Switch backlog is so massive it doesn't matter waiting.
now the big PS4 and Xbox One games are coming out Nintendo wont be getting the number 1 spot anymore
Playing Gears 5 now on PC Game Pass and They did a great job on this one.
Best news on the list is GreedFall. So glad see it do so well. Ill start Borderlands 3 after I finish Gears.
So happy DXM made it into this list.
Astral chain stil kicking good!
This week Zelda going to take the top spot!!
@HobbitGamer I truly don't understand, at all, how GTAV is still selling....at all. I mean how many people that wanted to play it didn't already play it? Or are they somehow counting MTX/currency as a sale? Or is it somehow cheaper to buy full copies of the game on sale with some kind of bonus currency included than to just buy the currency at full price so people just keep milking game sales to get cheaper currency?
The fact that that even needs to be considered is depressing.
Also, DxM is a mech sim...mech sims are never going to be top 10. It's a niche title that just needs to perform well for its budget in its niche.
Good for GreedFall. I’m glad it’s doing good. I might have to pick it up. And I also noticed Wreckfest in the top 15. Really fun game. I recommend it if you loved the Destruction Derby games or the Flatout games.
Borderlands outsells Gears 5? That's absurd smh. Yeah I know because it's multi-plat but still lol. But anyways Gears 5 is great, so much so that every other game I was playing took a back seat for now. Sorry Spyro, Astral Chain, and Tales of Vesperia, I'll get back to you one of these days.
Astral chain is doing pretty good for itself, DXM.... not so much, after I will beat Astral Chain.... and BOTW DLC.... and Pokémon.... and couple of other games and clean out my backlog, I might pick it up, but I don’t have time for it now
But the prototype mission was cool
@DenDen Zelda is the best selling game in Amazon for a very long while
Nintendo “ring fit adventure” is performing really really well on Amazon too in pre orders
@hoopderscotch sorry there is no chance Links Awakening is beating Borderlands 3 and Gears 5 in the charts or Luigis Mansion 3, Pokemon maybe but Death Stranding is still to be released and that will be a huge seller
@KBuckley27 I wouldn’t be sure of that....
For once, Nintendo actually have a big install base in the UK+ those games are will be in their second/third week of sales while Zelda will be fresh
Anyway, Zelda pre-order currently crushing in sales every other game in Amazon USA+ the switch lite coming out at the same day and many will buy those 2 together so reason for it not to take the charts
Anyway, Zelda is a much bigger franchise than Gears and now I don’t believe DS will be as successful as I originally thought
@NEStalgia Maybe we’re missing something and GTAV discs are the new bitcoin.
Agreed on DxM, too.
@DTfeartheBEARD I know!!!!
I didn't touch Astral Chains or Iceborn this weekend. Just rush back to Gears 5, really enjoying it. Did 4 and 5 One after the other - and they night and day. Last Gears I had planned was #2
I just wish the flashlight was not under the control of a drunken robot 🙄
I have a feeling a certain Zelda release will be pretty high in the charts come next week....
Gears 5 sold <25% of what Gears of War 4 sold at retail, which itself sold <25% of what Gears of War 3 sold at retail.
We have now reached a point where the retail launch of a Gears game is only marginally stronger than the retail launch of Yoshi's Crafted World. Gamepass has slaughtered Microsoft's first party retail presence.
Seeks like Daemon X Machina sold <2,000 retail copies in the UK at launch. Not too surprised given the less-than-stellar reviews and lack of media coverage due to Marvelous Japan's ridiculous Youtube policies.
@Agramonte Lmfao!!! I was playing co-op split screen with a friend and he asked me how to turn on the flashlight and I'm like that's all on Jack haha. It sucked for him because Jack was only shining light on what I aimed at. Gears 2 is still the best, but 5 is good.
@ozwally I know a decent amount of people interested in it, but for pretty much all of them there were just too many releases this month.... even just on Nintendo's Switch itself.
So a lot of them intend to get it still, but "later" when there's less stuff in the way.
I know I'm part of that group since I'm getting both Dragon Quest XI S and Link's Awakening this month(ontop of the original Dragon Quest trilogy which just got announced as well as releasing on the 27th too).
So I had to pass on getting not just Daemon X Machina this month but also Ni No Kuni.
Most likely I might get DxM sometime around December. I considered October but there's Luigi's Mansion that month and I still need to see how fast I'll recover from DQ11S/Link's Awakening.
Especially since after Luigi's Mansion there will also be the next Pokemon just around the corner.
So bar any surprises(but at this rate, it might take something like a surprisingly early release of Zelda:BotW2 ) in December, that might be when I'd finally have the time/funds to justify getting Daemon Ex Machina.
But yeah, honestly judging September on Daemon Ex Machina for Nintendo's performances might be acting a bit too early because the really big releases for Nintendo this month should instead be Link's Awakening and Dragon Quest 11 S.
The former is a legend of a Zelda game that is already hotly anticipated and the later meanwhile has received a lot of promotion from Nintendo and Square Enix this year. And somethings tells me that DQ11S' success will be less judged in term of brute sales and more in term of it's ability to increase Dragon Quest's visibility in the west even just a little.
(specifically: I'm suspecting from stuff like the DQ trilogy being confirmed, and the Trials of Mana remake coming next year, that SE themselves might have decided to finally diversify their offerings to the west to move away from "everything in the FF-shaped basket" strategy when FF games are becoming ever more costly to develop compared to other franchises that can run solid profits even with much more modest sales like Octopath Traveller)
@dimi Konmai does support switch just not with Pes.
@KBuckley27 Borderlands 3 beating Link's Awakening I could see happening (could be either way), but I really doubt Gears 5 will because of Game Pass. Microsoft has even promoted the cheap trick with Game Pass, buy lots of Gold and then upgrade to the same amount of Game Pass Ultimate (which is Game Pass XB1 + Game Pass PC + Gold) for only £1/$1/€1.
@westman98 "Retail" is kind of meaningless on the PC twins though unless it's including digital. I'd guess the overwhelming majority of "core" XBox customers buy digital. Heck, I got my X1X specifically to be my all-digital console because their digital ecosystem actually being sane is one of their advantages vs. Sony, and because with the day 1 patches required on the X1X there's little point buying physical media for it anyway....
Borderlands 3 and Gears 5 are both very good games. Switch lacks on shooter department.
Iceborn falls out of the charts after an abismal week in the UK
Will be interesting to see the global numbers.
Keep making waves in the UK Nintendo. You are doing good over there now.
Incredible to see a game originally released 2 generations ago GTA V still in the Top 10 yes it was remastered on last generation home consoles the PS4 and Xbox One but still it must be the biggest selling remaster of all time.
@StephanDLW A shame because I've really been enjoying the game, though I am an Armored Core fan. But, Marvelous Japan's executives are certainly out of touch with their bizarre streaming stance. I mean, blacking out a Sega/Atlus stream? So far I've only seen one youtuber really posting videos without any issue, but he also only has a couple thousand subs (typically posts a lot of AC vids).
@NEStalgia
Last year's Forza Horizon 4 was also a Day One Gamepass title (much like all Xbox first party games since 2017), but despite that, it managed to sell more retail copies than any other Forza game. If you include digital sales and Gamepass players, Forza Horizon 4 is comfortably the biggest Forza game of all time, and it's not even close.
That level of growth has not at all translated to Gears 5.
@westman98 I don't think MS is too worried about it, in fact they are getting precisely what they wanted, with more and more people signing on to their Gamepass subscription service. The game has more players than ever, being the biggest launch. MS is just betting on a different model.
Borderlands 3 is probably my game of the year to date it is amazing.
Gears 5’s gfx on Xbox one x in 4K are unbelievable - to me it looks like what next gen would be ! Great game as well
Both these games have the same core mechanics as the other games - just refined and expanded to perfection
@Grumblevolcano yup - I did the game pass upgrade - paid my gold subscription up to July 2022 the paid a quid to upgrade to game pass ultimate which converted my gold to the game pass ultimate package for the next 3 years. Incredible deal.
Smart by Microsoft - I will be buying Scarlett if and when I decide to upgrade - in truth though the Xbox one x is an absolute monster - incredible console for the money and I do not see me being an early adopter of the new consoles
@westman98 Did it manage to sell more physical retail copies on release week, or overall including the holiday season, hardware bundles, inclusion in hardware "get 3 games" promotions, etc?
Plus Forza in general just sells well above Gears the same way Kart easily outsells BotW.....it's a game that appeals to the mass market in a way Gears is somewhat more "core", so there's a bit of a different customer base.
Plus, atop that, keep in mind GamePass was still pretty new at the time. After a year plus of heavy promotion and deep discount promotions, a lot greater percentage of the XBox player base is subscribing to GamePass than they were a year ago. MS made it very specifically clear at E3 their marketing angle is: Subscribe to GamePass and play nearly every game you see here included in your subscription.
We'd have to see the GP download numbers to know how popular Gears is. Microsoft's obvious goal is to move everyone to a subscription model as much as possible. Investors prefer sub to retail even if it's a less obvious immediate profit, because it means consistent, predictable income rather than being slaved to the fickleness of a retail condition.
Not surprised at DxM selling poorly, I was going to buy it but it's just not really a game that I consider worthy of paying full price for.
