The free farewell update for the highly-praised indie platformer Celeste is now available on the Nintendo Switch.
It includes more than 100 levels, over 40 minutes of new music and various new mechanics and items. Here's an announcement from the Nintendo of America Twitter account:
If you haven't already played this game, now is the perfect opportunity. The base game includes more than 700 challenging levels and this new content increases the difficulty yet again.
The game is currently 50% off its usual price on the American Switch eShop ($9.99 instead of $19.99) until 16th September.
In our Nintendo Life review, we said Celeste was a "devilishly brilliant action platformer with enough skill required to excite genre purists and the speed running community" and awarded it ten out of ten stars.
Have you downloaded Celeste from the eShop yet? Will you be giving this new content a go? Tell us in the comments.

It's also currently on sale in the US for $9.99 right now so I'll be picking it up!
@Brydontk - Doing God's work there.
Worth every penny!
@Brydontk Thanks, I've added this in.
Very happy to hear this Farewell update released.
NOW can I finally get the Celeste cartridge I preordered and expected in April? The publisher delayed release so the cart could include all the updates.
I wholeheartedly support that decision, but it’s been a looong wait. 😅
Seeing it at 50% off in the eshop today was like a little dagger in my heart.
Great, now Limited Run can finally ship.
If you suck at games like me and have held off because people talk about how hard it is, DON’T AVOID THIS. The challenge is part of both the story and experience, but it is FAR from insurmountable (at least as far as the main campaign is concerned. The bonus levels are an entirely different beast). The “levels” are usually very small single-room platforming challenges, that are always both clear and fair and simply require patience and resilience to get through. The game saves OFTEN, lives are infinite, and deaths are counted and worn as a badge of honor. I haven’t beaten very many 2D platformers (again, because I suck), but I beat this one and I bear my 873 deaths as a point of pride. It means I kept going, learned, improved, persevered, and conquered, and it was an emotional journey well worth the hours. The game even offers several ways to reduce the difficulty, as well, if you find you need it, and these can be turned on and off at will without any penalty.
This game is a joy. PLEASE don’t let difficulty turn you off. It’s worth every moment.
Instant happiness dose
This sounds like it would no longer be available. But it seems the words are just misleading.
I do admit that I prefer physical over digital, but the price is tempting. Is there even a physical version available or soon to be? Should I go digital or wait for physical?
What happened to LRG physical then?
@Mew2Senshi Limited Run Games did a pre-order for it a while back. It's all sold out, but I think they've been waiting for chapter 9 to release before physical copies were packaged and shipped.

@SwitchForce this blog post from a few days ago said they were waiting on chapter 9 before packaging and shipping the LRG physical copies.

These bonus levels look hard as heck... I enjoyed the base game a lot, but I’m not sure I can beat these.
Yes! This means the LRG physical edition soon will be finished. Have been waiting since the beginning of 2019.
@bkbooth "this blog post from a few days ago said they were waiting on chapter 9 before packaging and shipping the LRG physical copies.

And hopefully those will be on Cart not extra DLC for it.
@bro2dragons Very VERY well said. I 100% agree with this.
The game is tough, it would be a lie to say it isn’t but it’s doable. I beat the game and I’m so happy I did.
After that I started the post game challenges and I had some fun with them but I stopped somewhere halfway through when I realized I was getting more frustration from enjoyment out of them by that point. But the main game was absolutely amazing.
@SwitchForce you'd hope so given they waited for the release before shipping. I didn't end up pre-ordering because LRG end up too expensive with shipping to Australia to justify, especially when I already own a digital copy.
I couldn’t get into Celeste, but this is a fine example of why indie devs are 100 times better than AAA studios. 100 levels for free must be a treat for people that love this game.
@bkbooth That are choices we all make I bought it for Physical release to save on my sdcard memory and leaving that for Game Updates or DLC only.
I wonder if Best Buy will release the same time as LR... I have my physical copy reserved and paid for through them.
I probably should actually play this now. I've had it for a while but haven't scratched the surface of it. From everything I've heard it's an incredible game.
I know what I'm playing when I get home from work. Best 2D platformer ever.
@bro2dragons I say the same thing about Dark Souls 😛
Best Buy is getting the Limited Run release so I'll pick it up then.
Yay, can't wait to finally get my LRG, especially as there are 2 other games on my order!
Farewell is super cool
Wait, is the game being removed from the eShop, or is it just a name to say, there won't be further updates coming?
I need to play this. So so many games to play I don't no where to start 😭🤔had zelda over a year and need to start that.
@bro2dragons Very well put. A word that often gets thrown around with challenging platformers is ‘punishing’, but it would be completely unjust to apply it to this game.
It’s not ‘punishing’ at all. Yes, it presents you with difficult challenges to overcome, but it doesn’t ‘punish’ you for failure; it just let’s you try again, almost instantaneously, and the challenges are so satisfying and well crafted that you’ll just be glad that you can keep trying. It’s a game in which you will die, many, many times, but it also feels like a game that ultimately wants you to succeed.
It’s a real gem.
@bro2dragons Incredibly challenging, but NEVER frustrating. It takes really brilliant design skill to pull that off.
At last my Limited Run will be released, been waiting to play this game FOREVER!!
This is one of my favorite games on Switch; I've put over a hundred hours into the post-game. It's one of those games that feels so good to move around in, it almost doesn't matter what my goal is in order for me to crave playing it.
It feels like stealing that they're releasing this for free. I'd easily drop money down for this.
@JonnyD108 @Lemmy_the_Koopa It isn't getting pulled from the eShop, and considering that the Variant mode is still marked as beta (even though it's now on consoles), it might not even be the last update. Chapter 9 being called "Farewell" is significant to the story, and I think it also has to do with the fact that a potential sequel isn't planned, meaning that the update is a farewell to the characters and world of the game.
Coincidentally, I just received an email from LRG telling their preorder customers that Celeste carts have finally gone into production! They held off all this time waiting for the Farewell update so their cart would contain the COMPLETE game.
I suppose that means the game will ship in Oct or Nov, but I’d say LRG definitely made the right decision, honoring the game, their product, and consumers.
Still haven’t played Celeste but I’m sure it will be well worth the wait ❤️
One of my top favorites among 200+ switch games I have. Too bad September is filled with everything I want and I have no time..
Wasnt really as blown away with Celeste as most people but it is certainly a good game. More content for free is always a bonus
This is a pretty sweet bonus for fans of the game!
@Varazadi
It’ll just be all the more sweet when Celeste finally shows up in my in mail box!
LRG expects to to ship the standard edition in early Oct, so it won’t be long now.
But once it arrives it’ll have to contend with a ruthless backlog - FE3H, Astral Chain, Marvel, and the Ghostbusters port. It’s like I need a gamecation lately...
@bro2dragons 873 deaths?! That’s it?! 😅 I’m well over 4000 now...
Celeste infuriates me. The platforming is tough as nails. But... but I’m still playing it despite the constant deaths and curses. The story is great and there is something pretty fantastic about getting the stupid strawberry that I died 118 times for ( you may think I’m exaggerating). The news of 100 more ridiculous levels is not “Yay!” But rather “Ugh!” Since I’ll feel compelled to try them out and once I try them I’ll be sucked into this infinite hellhole of “ one more try!” Celeste to me is the epitome of Love/ Hate experience.. sitting right next to Hollow Knight..
@Mamabear Yeah, I stopped going for strawberries after the first two chapters. Around then, I realized they were more frustration than they’re worth for my personal experience. I found one B-side (in the hotel) by accident, and realized quickly I didn’t have patience enough for that, either, and I didn’t get more than 20 levels into Pico-8. Like I said, I’m far from a good player. But I finished the story and of that I’m proud. I have too many other games and too little free time to keep killing myself over this one, but I can only imagine how rewarding it must be to power through it all. I can’t speak highly enough of this game.
