After some initial teething problems upon release earlier today, it appears that Mario Kart Tour is now mostly accessible for players. If you do manage to get onto the game, you might notice a greyed-out multiplayer section.
The icon was first brought to our attention through this tweet from @VOOK64 (thanks, VGC), and we can confirm that this is indeed how the app looks at present. We're not sure when 'Inbound!' refers to exactly, but at least we know it's on the way.
Loading up the app has also revealed a paid, monthly subscription service called 'Gold Pass'. The pass allows players to earn extra in-game rewards, but it's pretty pricey.
Have you given the game a go? Do you think multiplayer would be a welcome addition? Share your thoughts in the comments.

So now begins the slow array of forthcoming updates to make the app a proper Mario Kart game😑 They'll come with all the speed of a falling Tetris block at Level 3 but with only a fraction of the satisfaction of a complete line because it's too flipping long!!Why not release the complete game from the off, rather than dangle future content with one hand and sicker-punch and rob us with the other!? (Gold Pass ×cough cough×)🤪
Stop giving this disgrace of a game attention.
So you need to be online to play, but you can't play online?
Gold pass? How about a pass pass
I have had nine goes on that pipe thing, and still no Pauline.
I'm like Ben Affleck in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, When Lord? When is it gonna be my time?
It’s a pretty bad game. The controls are rubbish and on top of that you’ve got “micro transactions” and subscription to pay. It’s a disappointing release from the big N
I tried but gave up. The controls are terrible. Maybe I'm just old and used to playing it the traditional way, but I just felt more frustrated than anything, which was an odd sensation when playing a new MK game. Not for me.
So far have enjoyed this game. My battery is really low. Love shy guy bazaar
@gcunit I wrote this 7 minutes ago - working my way up the front page of NL from the bottom.
""What better way to celebrate than to fire something out of a pipe."
is my new euphemism for, well, exactly what massaging a pipe to shoot something out of the top isn't exactly a subtle euphemism for. 🤣 And having that thing be Toadette makes it all the better."
Isn't it have online multiplayer exclusive? I keep seeing everyone's names.
I'm confused. The game seemingly already matches me with other players when I play. Unless... they tried really hard to make those players seem like real people (by having a name database etc), which would be the epitome of lameness.
@chardir Right now that seems to be how it goes.
@Miyamotosan Lol I totally read that in Ben Affleck's voice from the movie.
@Miyamotosan great reference!
@rjejr I've put it in my sig. Words to live by.
Is this the similar to the friend matching multiplayer that was promised for Mario Maker 2?
Never gonna happen.
Will it also get decent controls in the future?
I assumed that was a option of multiplayer against a friends list and the current way it’s setup is matching with strangers.
I don’t think the other players are real. If you skip the track intro the race starts immediately. What would happen for people still watching the track intro?
@gcunit Question - Did you used to have a star next to your name signifying you worked here? I feel like you did, but I could be confusing you with someone else.
Who decided about these controls at Nintendo? There are better ways to drive with a kart around than these controls.
Well, that's already reassuring, compared to TPCI's beyond-stupid reasoning for not having it in Masters.
Played a little bit of it, and the controls are not the best. I just can’t get used to them. While it doesn’t make the game unplayable, the controls are still pretty bad. Hopefully Nintendo improves the controls in a future update.
@rjejr Yeh, I was a mod, but got binned for a couple of controversial comments I made in an article's comments section that were deemed unacceptable for someone associated with the site. Don't miss the grief a mod role brings though, and it means I don't have to be as careful with my words anymore, which is nice
It's just another free-to-start game. Like Pocket Camp, it'll be good for a couple minutes play here and there, especially on the morning transit commute. But for people complaining about this game, there's an easy remedy....don't play it. Instead, play the impeccable Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch (also on your morning commute)!
This game is like NBA 2K levels of gambling. I threw up in my mouth when I saw how many different forms of in-game currency there were and some of the prices.
what about friend requests? Ive gotten a few but cant access them?
@gcunit Ah, thanks for the explanation. I must have missed that but every day I'm on NL and every night I'm like why am I still on NL it's 75% hateful negativity so it doesn't surprise me.
@Claytonbob @HorridCrow @tendonerd @JonnyD108 so this was revealed when the game was in beta but it still doesn’t explain it well in game. The other racers are pulled from the internet but CPU controlled. Those are real usernames and the character/kart/glider that player has (I’m not sure yet whether it’s their last used combination or just random from what they unlocked). But you’re not actually racing against those users, they might not even be online, you’re just racing against CPUs using their “avatar”, if you will.
The only place it’s really relevant are the ranked races, where those players’ actual scores are uploaded. They’re still CPU controlled while you’re racing them, though, and CPUs are controlling you when they race against your character.
@ShadJV I've speculated Nintendo just uses real player data for bots with the exception of a few switch games that commonly have latency issues.
I have a notification saying I have a friend request.... but I can't access the friends list to even see who sent the request until "rank is unlocked," and there is nothing saying how I unlock rank in the first place. Can anyone help?
Calling it now you need Gold Pass to play multiplayer online.
This is not a Mario Kart game. It’s utterly awful. Nintendo Life will no doubt give it an 8 or 9 though just to keep in line with their paymasters......Nintendo.
I still don't really get the controls 🤔
And I tried to get the practice track/tutorial back, but it seems to disappear once you move on?
So far I like the look of the tracks but just wish I could play a proper console version instead.
I actually think the game is pretty fun, but then again, I’m pretty good at it, haha. I can see people complaining about it if they suck.
It's not a bad game, but it really has two very strong details:
-Here Nintendo seems to try to reach Gameloft levels, almost everything is expensive here and yes, with a "premium" subscription, they really exaggerate with that of squeezing money.
-Yes, the controls with "swipe" are really awful, but the advantage (and something better) is that you can play with the gyroscope, but playing vertically, the control is very unstable and awful too, you literally have to be adjusting the direction even if you have the smartphone completely vertically
@gcunit : I recall being there when it happened (so to speak) and was quite disheartened at the time as I was paying attention to your moderator status with the suspicion that you would have been "relieved" of your duty. Two particularly controversial topics sprung to mind and I had a little look back and found the one (I was attacked quite a lot too, and was fed up with writing essay after essay to philosophically elaborate on every bloody thing because suddenly there was a mob of people who apparently knew me and my values better than I, with everyone forcing words into my figurative mouth).
Even more frustrating is knowing that the other person has no idea what you're talking about because their worldview and thought processes are so myopic, and that most of what you say to them will go over their heads.
I don't think you had said anything out of turn. You were blunt, sure, but not without tact. Hysteria is such an ugly thing and the kinds of people who prioritise their fickle emotions lack the balanced perspective, compassion, and introspection that wisdom brings, and I could see that you possess that. Anyhow, I hope the incident doesn't bother you anymore. At times like those, I really hate participating in online dialogue and have been tempted on numerous occasions to leave the website permanently, but I would not have pressed on if I did not have conviction in what I said, popular sentiment be damned. And I am glad to see that you have not surrendered likewise.
@Silly_G Nice to hear some supportive words, thanks. I like to consider I'm fairly resilient in the face of opposing populist views etc. so the 'incident' wasn't really anything out of the ordinary for me.
I suppose it did slightly change my opinion of some of the people that run the site, just because I'd put a lot of time and care into moderating for however long I'd been doing it, and they found an issue where I hadn't, as you say, said anything particularly bad, to be enough to instantly ditch me.
But having been in both positions, it's far better being out of it than doing it. Asking people to stop swearing got old pretty quickly, particularly as I swear as much as anyone else. And thanks to the ignore button, I can ignore all the idiots rather than having to actively read the idiotic posts and take some action. Plus I don't have to appear respectful of the site anymore so can vent like anyone else about clickbait, affiliate links etc.
