Surprise! Frozenbyte has revealed its latest game headed to Nintendo Switch and we really don't have long to wait until we can check it out. Boreal Blade is launching today.
Boreal Blade is a team-based melee fighting game said to offer "a fluid combat system and the possibility to develop sophisticated fighting techniques and tactics". It focuses on player vs player combat and gameplay consisting of both reactive and proactive elements, with various weapon types and three distinctive fighting styles available to try out. Here's some PR to tell you a little more:
"Boreal Blade strikes an excellent balance between realism and gameplay. The game turns away from the rock-paper-scissors approach where weapons and shields matter only when the player presses the corresponding button to use them for attacking or blocking. Actually, there is no block button at all, but the passive blocking featured in the game allows players to block attacks by simply positioning themselves wisely and timing their attacks with care.
Pre-determined attack key combinations and complex counter moves have been abandoned in favour of the beautiful simplicity of only a single attack button - and hundreds of ways to variate every attack. Players can move their weapon and character around freely, turning an attack into a block - and back to another attack just in a blink of an eye. Strikes and blocks meld into a seamless continuity.
Weapon movement feels very natural, allowing players to create and modify their signature moves and distinctive fighting styles. More seasoned warriors can spice up their game with dodges, sprints, blocks, powered attacks, feint attacks and weapon throws to confuse opponents and make the battle more unpredictable and exciting."
You'll find the game waiting for you later today on the Switch eShop for $19.99 / 19.99€ / £17.99, but if you'd rather try it before you buy, a free demo is also landing at the very same time.
Frozenbyte is the developer behind such games as the Trine series, Nine Parchments, and Has-Been Heroes.
Will you be checking this one out today? Let us know whether you'll be giving the demo a try or heading straight in for the full game with a comment below.

This looks pretty fun, the controls sound pretty similar to mount and blades, will try the demo out for sure.
Edit: gave it a go, not so great, the controls are unwieldy, its very ugly and slow, and the server infrastructures poor.
Ok, how many reviews are we going to get that compares this game to Dark Souls?
Definitely gonna give the demo a go and then I'll go from their. Hopefully it's fun too play as the premise sounds really interesting.
Very much interested in this, seeing as I love Mount & Blade's combat! I know this is a bit different, seeing as in M&B you only attack in four directions, but they're still similar in way of controlling your swings. Definitely giving the demo a try later today.
And yes, this comment is very similar to the first one, but it was exactly what I wanted to say. ^^'
@patbacknitro18 Looks to me it will be compared to For Honor.
Looks incredibly janky
@zionich In a world where Crash Bandicoot was being compared to Dark Souls, anything is possible
Yes for demo!!! I am interested but not interested enough to spend $20 blindly. Thank goodness for demos
Does this game have an offline functionality with AI replacing human opponents?
Instead of a surprise release, they should have surprised us with holding it back and polishing it instead of releasing what looks like an alpha product to the World
@patbacknitro18 Have you ever played or even seen Dark Souls?
Since they changed and didnt put all 4 trine games on the one cartridge, lost interest in that dev.
Also the video looks rough. Just reminds me of Sword Art Online (the tv show)
Doesn't look that great to be honest. I can understand why they surprise launched it.
@Matroska that’s not @patbacknitro18 ‘s opinion. It’s a meme. 🤦♂️
@Matroska better question, has any of the mainstream online reviews who constantly compare games to Dark Souls? Such as the hundreds of reviews comparing the Crash Trilogy to Dark Souls.
Been playing the demo the past half hour, it's like Fortnite mixed with For Honor...the controls take a ton of getting used to ( need to be improved badly ) and I keep getting booted from matches just as they begin. Has some promise, but as of right now it's a hard pass for me on the full game.
A demo and a good price, and the game is interesting. We'll done Frozenbyte.
Got excited for a second, thought it was like Shrek Superslam.
Don't knock it till you've tried it. (I've long since given up waiting on another Powerstone.)
@Bunkerneath Different team works on Trine
I bought Nine Parchments recently for 6 bucks. Been meaning to give it a try. TRINE was my most played Wii U game at launch so I’m definitely interested in Frozenbyte’s work.
What is with the janky animations? Looks like it was developed for the iPhone.
Well whaddya know!
Gotta try out the demo, I suppose!
@Mr_Muscle
Is this the new "looks like a Flash game" insult?
I'll give it a go on the demo
@Pod Don't talk **** about flash! lol
Wow looks a load of garbage.
Hmm...interesting. Might give this a download. Have off a little bit of For Honor vibes
@konbinilife for real! There’s so many more games I may have bought (and a few I wouldn’t have) if they had demos. I really wish every game had a demo.
Seems more Has-Been-Heros than it does Trine
Wow loving the gameplay! I want this one!
Looks bland to me. I'm not a fan of the art style, either, but I'll try the demo later tonight or tomorrow.
They should pull this and the demo immediately, it is horrible.
Looks like a hit n hope janky mess
Worst tutorial ever. Every time you mess up, it repeats the same annoying voice line without explaining how to do what you need to do to proceed. Feinting is as unintuitive as possible.
@ConanLives
Is it really that bad? ( Havent played it myself)
@The-Chosen-one Just played it.(The demo) It doesn't exactly explain to you what modes you can play or not and the graphics look like a student project. Like the hands don't even look like they grab onto the sword. Looks like some Trollland tier bad work, but the physics are pretty good, and that's it.
I'll just wait for Dauntless to show up.
@The-Chosen-one I did play it quite a lot yesterday and I gotta admit I really do enjoy the game, after playing the demo I ended up buying it. Hands not grabing to a sword as @Dakotastomp said might be a fair point but you won't really have time to look at such things while in combat.
@The-Chosen-one I found the frame rate really choppy when it gets going, and the models and textures are very ugly. Plus random server issues on every match I played, didn't get all the way to the end on any of the dozen or so I played.
Does Frozenbyte use the Frostbite engine?
Mmh i will give it a try, tnx for the reply guys.
Ugh, these people still put too much blood in their games! We don't want that much realism! Do you know what this game would lose by only including a minimal amount of blood so it could get a T rating? Absolutely nothing!
@patbacknitro18 Sadly, yes =*(
