Update 22/08: The Nintendo Versus Twitter account has now revealed how exactly this tournament will work. The three-day event titled "Original Class of '64" only includes fighters, stages, and items from the first Smash Bros. outing on the Nintendo 64. The further you advance, the better the spirit you'll win.
The artwork for this particular tournament is also based on the original N64 Japanese box art:
Original Story 21/08: Do you have fond memories of playing Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo 64 back in the late '90s? Well, you might want to keep an eye out for the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament taking place later this week.
Starting on 23rd August and running for a total of three days, Ultimate will be hosting an event featuring fighters exclusively from the original Nintendo 64 game. If you did play this title many years ago, you'll likely remember the 12 characters.
The original roster included: Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Kirby, Fox, Yoshi, Pikachu, Samus, Luigi, Ness, Captain Falcon, and Jigglypuff. Based on the picture above, though, it might just be the core group.
Will you be participating in this event? Leave a comment below.

Hmmm might make me jump back in. That's pretty cool
sounds cool and fun and cool and fun
I'm suggesting they're not doing Spirit board events anymore, in favor of this? Or am I missing something?
This is what I'm talking about with the modern designs. Issues.
Well, save for Samus, of course, but it's hard to mess that one up.
It would be lame if it was just the original 8 tbh. Most of my playtime in that game was with Cap and Luigi!
Um Wrong, I heard on the playground that you could unlock Mewtwo if you beat Pikachu's Break the Target stage in under 20 seconds.
Call me a literalist, but "90s" means more than one year in the decade. SSB came out 1999, so anyone who has memories of it in that decade more than in that single year, is remembering it wrong.
@KingBowser They did one last week. I think they just alternate between spirit events and special online tournaments now on a weekly basis.
Meh, these tourney events would be a bit better if they'd do something similar to what smash 4 did or make it like a splatfest. All it's really doing is limiting the characters you can use. Even getting exclusive jpegs through spirit board events was better than this.
@PikaPhantom That's good, I guess. Gives me more time to get more shield spacers and such, for those pesky Legend-type Spirits.
@KingBowser You can also get legend tier spirits from winning the tournaments
@Wavey84 While Ultimate is the best gameplay wise I think there is still reason to return to prior games like Brawl for its mode variety and Subspace Emissary which despite its flaws is still worth playing through for the cutscenes alone and far better than World of light in my opinion.
Wish there were some kind of follow up to these event tournaments, akin to Splatoon 2.
I might actually go for this one. Awesome.
The original is the purest form of Smash Bros. for me.
Oooh! I wonder if we will see some Melee, Brawl, Smash 4, and Ultimate character only matchs. Would be a fun way to play some tournaments.
Would be pretty fun if you had to somehow "unlock" the possibility of playing as one of the final four.
@AnnoyingFrenzy They were also my 2 mains in 64. A man of taste, I see.
I think that these tournaments are a cool idea. I don't like the fact I have to play by certain rule set. I prefer 1v1 no items, tournament legal stages. I'm sure they could set up a for fun or for glory in tournament mode for the events.
@Markiemania95 Ah I see you are a man of culture as well.
That means there may be a melee tournament...oh no
@SuperGhirahim64 Sure, let's break it down with the Core 8. But first, some visual assistance from their original (albeit 2D) Smash appearances (use the 2 images in the Characters section):
https://www.ssbwiki.com/Super_Smash_Bros.
Mario - Save for Super Mario 64, Mario has had a fairly consistent 3D rendering across his main games. When it comes to recent Smash, however, he's constantly and uncharacteristically angry in the eyebrows and animations while his cheeks look like they've been stung by bees. He's been angry (that's too persistent to be focused or determined) since Melee.
Yoshi - The criticism for Yoshi is going to sound similar to Pikachu's. Classic Yoshi was a tad lanky in parts and needed brighter eyes. But the upright physiology, again-puffed cheeks, sudden and complete lack of neck and awkwardly-long arms take Yoshi away from the dinosaur category that made the critters interesting. I think Melee tried to find some middle ground between the designs.
Pikachu - Since we're on this vein, Pikachu has been through several iterations within his home series. There has been the original, mouse-like Pikachu, to the current more anthropomorphized model, to Why is Pikachu made of Ovals? Modern/Smash Pikachu may as well be a Rabbid with gelatinous eyes and over-anthropomorphization. Melee again tried to find middle ground, but the eyes and mouth could appear awkwardly large or flat, respectively, at times. Really just needed some slight tweaks.
Fox - Likewise, Melee Fox only needed slight tweaks, because that rendition of Fox was far better than the odd SNES/2D Smash64 renditions and properly portrayed his debonair that the N64 couldn't quite convey in polygons. Brawl onward takes an incredibly awkward "duckface" approach that is unfortunately in the main games as well.
DK - DK is a versatile character design, so there's really not a terrible lot to critique here except for minor things. Is the tuft of head hair a bit too long, are the teeth goofy (teeth have been scaled back a bit on multiple characters between 4 and Ultimate), is the blank space around DK's eyes too much? Hard to say.
Samus - Again, another versatile design that has even weathered shoulder balls and still looked good. Color palette, awkward/over-designing, metallic sheen, lankiness, and over-anatomy are typically the main bullet points for Samus' armor, but frankly, I think this one has improved with each successive Smash game.
Kirby - You wouldn't think we'd have an issue with such a simple character, but oh man, they made it happen. Look at how long the feet are, how much real estate the facial features take up, the absolutely strange positioning of his right...hand-stub-arm-thing. Kirby has always been an odd but incredibly charming design and has been rather successful at being flexible. Yes, rounding off his hands was a good idea as was making the facial features more pronounced than his KDL/KA iterations. But this event's splash art showcases some major points for correction.
Link - Insert BotW rant here. More to the point, is this supposed to be Link? There's nothing dynamic, here. For all the talk of "Link should be designed to be interpreted as male or female" or the equally gender-ambiguous "elf-like" (the latter makes far more 'logical' sense), THIS design stems from TP and has been carried on in BotW. Compared to more successful Links and their designs (OoT/MM, LttP, ALBW), this Link would be right at home in some military armor in a Call of Duty game. It even manages to make the iconic green outfit UNFITTING. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, WRONG!
Now, that's the Core 8. This doesn't account for the other characters (e.g. Ultimate Zelda better-portraying Hylia than Brawl/TP Zelda) and how those newer renditions are generally improvements. I'm positing that the original 8, some rather large names, may have lost their way a bit — not just in design, but their games as well (Star Fox Zero, BotW, Kirby and the Not-Epic Rehashing, etc.)
@Wavey84 interesting comments, considering I find the 64 character models to have a ton of personality. I’ll admit there’s not a lot of content there, but there’s something about its simplicity that I can appreciate too,
Cool idea! I'm decent enough with Mario that I'll give this a whirl, even if I could use some more practice with him. I look forward to SETTLE IT IN SMASH...with everyone else on the Battlefield XD
Ya know, Super Mario Maker 2 was overall pretty good but what really killed it for me was the Galoombas feet color in SMW. By making their feet dark green instead of yellow, it ruins the entire whimsical color palette that SMW has and instead makes SMW look more like a generic military shooter.
What’s “nitpicking”?
@Wavey84 Depends if you were there or not when it first came out, when it first came out people liked it
Speaking of Smash, have they decided to finally pay a couple of interns to write up some text for the Spirits yet? The lack of that 'museum' aspect to them is a bugbear. They've put so much work into postgame content yet a 5.0 update with several thousand words and an extra menu slot seems like minimal work.
@RadioHedgeFund
And consider every single of those (in Ultimate’s case over a thousand) descriptions would need to be translated into ten other languages .
There’s a reason why a Ultimate is the first Smash game to be released simultaneously world wide
@AnnoyingFrenzy I see your point. Maybe they'll do Melee and allow more fighters? Personally, I want to be able to Tryhard as Young Link!
@RadioHedgeFund Spirts admittedly does take less time than Trophies. But the work necessary to put them on the game requires diligence. It takes a little bit more than 'Flavor Text'.
@KingBowser86 Glad I’m not the only one to ask the question, “Why does Mario look so angry in these games?” Brawl/Smash 4 had it the worst in my opinion, and they’ve started to soften it somewhat in Ultimate, but Smash 64’s model captures his whimsy the best.
@ItalianBaptist Right? It goes against his character's physically task-adaptive nature and typically patient (save for the early, non-canon RPG's) Gentleman-of-the-World personality.
Good old comics
@Judal27 i understand what you are saying, but these types of tournaments encourage trying out different characters. Plus I love themed tournamnets but that's just me
Final Smashes are in this tournament, which is kind of lame. Takes away from the 'Original Class of '64' feel somewhat.
Where's James Bond and Meowth? They were my favorites!
