When Bandai Namco officially confirmed Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch was coming to the Switch later this year, it also revealed this version of the game would run at 30fps and maintain a 720p resolution in both docked and handheld mode.
Adding to the existing information about this upcoming release, it's now been discovered Engine Software is helping Bandai Namco out with the Level-5 port. Here's the official announcement straight from the developer's website:
We are proud to announce we are working with Bandai-Namco and Level-5 to bring their classic tale: Ni no Kuni – Wrath of the White Witch to the Nintendo Switch.
You've likely seen the Dutch developer's orange logo featured in at least one of the games you have played over the years.
In terms of its recent history with the Switch, the company has helped release games such as Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King, Into the Breach and Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas.
It also handled the Bandai Namco release Little Nightmares: Complete Edition and at the start of this year released the JRPG The Caligula Effect: Overdose (based on the PS4 remake of the Vita game).

Oh! September your assault on my wallet will be felt. (Zelda, Ni No Kuni, Dragon Quest XI S)
September dear lord. Astral Chain, Ni No Kuni, Daemon X Machina and Borderlands 3.
I want to care about this game, but that release date is just lousy.
Maybe next year if there is a lull
I didn't know they are Dutch. But now I see they also worked with Ronimo Games,
September is a terrible month for saving money.
"It also handled the Bandai Namco release Little Nightmares: Complete Edition"
That doesn't necessarily fill me with confidence as I never made it far in Little Nightmares due to the unbearable loading times. Really looking forward to playing this one though. Don't know how I'll find the time for it with a million other games releasing around the same time but I'll find a way.
@Frank90 Astral Chain is August though... just barely.
Looking forward to this and DQXI in September. The switch is releasing JRPG's way faster than I can play them
Ohhh god my wallet my dear wallet
I have a feeling that the Switch will become even more popular come September.
For the record, Ni No Kuni is a classic. Can’t believe we’re getting a handheld hybrid release (although I say this for pretty much every game from 7th gen onwards that gets a Switch release, it never ceases to excite)
Now, I look at the one month period of September:
Astral Chain (8/30)
Spyro Trilogy (9/3)
RPG Maker MV (9/3)
Daemon X Machina (9/13)
AI Somnium Files (9/17)
Ni No Kuni (9/20)
Zelda Link’s Awakening (9/20)
Baldur’s Gate (9/24)
Baldur’s Gate 2 (9/24)
Planescape Torment (9/24)
Icewind Dale (9/24)
Contra Rogue Corps (9/24)
Dragon Quest XI S (9/27)
Trine 4 (9/30)
And can’t help but think, hmm... why are they stacking so many games in this small period? Perhaps the illusive Switch Mini is launching around this time frame...
@DockEllisD
I like your style, dude.
Btw, Oninaki is getting a physical release with English in Japan. Can import here
Oninaki (Multi-Language) Switch
@DockEllisD
Ha! You did get the reference.
Too awesome
LOL I'm gonna have to spend the next year just catching up on all of the games releasing in September.
Dragon Quest XI S is top priority, but I'll absolutely be nabbing this sooner than later. I've wanted to play Ni no Kuni for so long, but couldn't, having never owned a PS3.
And a portable version at that!
I loved this game SO MUCH on PS3, probably one of my all time favourites. However I don't really think I need to replay it, especially with Astral Chain and DQXI coming out around the same time...
Don't get me wrong, I love this game and I am glad it is coming to Switch but it seems there is little effort being put in. For being such an old game the LEAST they could do is have the Switch render it in 1080p because it should be MORE than capable. I would have loved to see the remaster instead though. If it were a remaster then maybe 720p would be acceptable.
Only 30fps on the Switch when the DS version could run at 60fps?
@retro_player_22 Ah yes, the DS version with its comparable graphics to the PS3 game.
Still not sure whether to get the ps4 remaster or the switch version..
PS3 was 720p and 30fps and looked great. So that should not be a problem
That said, with Astral Chains, Monster Hunter: Iceborne, Cold Steel 3, Borderlands3, CodeVein and FIFA20 all on my September list... Not spending time replaying a PS3 jRPG.
Have #2 on PC. So maybe someday as a Steam Sale just to have both in the same collection.
They couldn’t have bumped this PS3 era title up to 1080p, 60FPS, or ideally, both? Shame.
Wish I had time for this one but just like everyone else, my September is packed!
yeah release it the same day as Zelda Link's Awakening HD remake smart move Nintendo
Astral Chain, Ni No Kuni, & DQXI are going to keep me busy for a looog time.
that Joe Hisashi's main theme is stunning!
I prefer 30 fps in the Ni no Kuni games since I consider too troublesome when after a 24 fps cutscene a 60fps gameplay begins
@retro_player_22 Wow, I didn't even know there was a DS No No Kuni game. Cool that it runs at 60fps.
Yeah, if the Switch version ran at 60fps, especially in handheld mode, that would be an instant buy for me.
@Ultimategamer132 I especially agree with the 60fps part. That would be gorgeous on Switch!
But the Switch should be able to run a PS3 game, right? And shouldn't be a big achievement.
@JaxonH excited for No No Kuni but the fact that it is a straight conversion from the PS3 version puts a damper on it for me. I think you and I have discussed this in the past but the lack of ANY sort of upgrade just seems lazy.
@Moroboshi876
GPU and RAM wreck the PS3 to bits but the biggest problem is when a game makes heavy use of Cell’s SPU which requires work to port over unless the dev can rebuild the code outright. 1080p60fps is feasible but it seems the dev wasn’t given the resources to make that happen.
@SalvorHardin Yes, but this happens too often. Switch can do much better, yet we have to celebrate when a PS360 game is ported as it was 10 years ago.
"Switch has no games" ???
No now the haters are saying "Switch is a port machine" - like that is a bad thing.
The fact it's not even the remastered version was bad enough but the fact it's only 720p docked is super disappointing considering the PS3 already ran this game at 720p was hoping for 1080p at least. Such a great game though.
@Vectorman
He didn’t say thanks, he said “thank YE”, which is the appropriate response.
And I don’t think Nintendo had anything to do with it, as the game is identical on all platforms aside from higher framrate/res, which was already a given as every other version of other remastered games naturally run at higher framerate/res elsewhere. The difference this time is they literally changed nothing else and yet still slapped “remastered” on the box for other versions, so without those marginal performance buffs due to the hardware strength, they had nothing left to market it as “Remastered”.
@Mrbayram92
There is no such thing as a remastered version for this game. Doesn’t exist.
All they did was crank it out at a higher framerate and res (things that any game are going to have on a more powerful platform) and slap “Remastered” on the box. This is literally the exact same game as every other version, just running on a lower spec machine (which, naturally, will run it at lower specs).
Most people probably won’t even be able to tell this version apart it’ll look so similar. 720p vs 1080p on a cel-shaded cartoon-like game is extremely hard to notice. And, it’s 720p handheld also, no downgrading at all, which will look just as crisp if not more crisp than 1080p on a TV.
@JaxonH that's basically what a remaster is the hell are you expecting. Saying it doesn't exist is dumb if you don't understand the difference between remaster and remake.
@Vectorman
Well, I guess that’s because you didn’t get the reference. When “The Dude” Lebowski says “I like your style dude” to the cowboy, he says “Thank YE” in response.
Watch The Big Lebowski and you’ll get it.
And yeah, they didn’t actually care about remastering it, they just cared about the bump from sales by marketing it as such to the masses of people who are too ignorant to actually look into it. Those who see “remastered” on the box and assume it’s some drastically better version. But it’s not. Same exact game as Switch. Same exact game as PS3. Just running on more powerful hardware.
@Mrbayram92
Most other remastered games actually remaster by touching up assets and sound quality, streamlining certain obtuse gameplay mechanics like double or triple speed during battles, etc. Resolution and frame rate are a default improvement given better hardware. That’s the bare minimum.
Practically every other remaster has more than that.
The question is not what I was expecting, The question is what were you expecting?
So looking forward to this. Honestly if it runs at a smooth 30 in handheld and the text looks legible than I am sold. Its a great game and honestly it will be 80% portable for me so just hoping it runs nice like other jap ports like Okami and FF games.
I'm currently playing Nino Kuni 2 on the ps4 and loving every minute. So excited for this switch release
This is going to be a really hard call on platform choice. I never played NNK1. I have NNK2 on PS4.....can't decide if I should keep NNK all together on one platform, or get 1 on Switch....
since the switch version is not a remaster and is going to sell for the same price as the remaster, i'm gonna buy it on pc. At least i'll get an actual remaster, not a direct port.
