No matter what you do for a living, there will be days when you can't help but feel a little gloomy doing the ol' nine-to-five. Sometimes, though, you realise just how lucky you are, and one of those times is when you're given the go-ahead to spend the next few minutes creating a lovingly-crafted article focusing on the unexpected selection of dog pictures that just ended up in your inbox courtesy of Square Enix.
Yes, celebrating International Dog Day - which is both a thing that exists, and something which took place yesterday - Square Enix has decided to raise the hype for the upcoming Final Fantasy VIII Remastered release by showcasing the adorable Angelo. Those of you who have played the game before will know that Angelo is Rinoa's pet dog in the game, and she can be summoned to help in battles.
Without further ado, here are the new screens:
The game launches on Nintendo Switch on 3rd September, although it has been confirmed that it will only arrive as a digital release.
Do you plan on picking up Final Fantasy VIII? Has this bunch of screenshots had anything to do with that decision? Let us know in the comments.

I don't see many differences between this Remastered and the first game I played on my PS1. I don't understand why we are calling it "Remastered". Anyway.....I will play it one more time for sure as I hadn't finished it in the past. I had hard times with final boss, haha!!
@Geobros If you go to the official website they have side by side comparisons. The differences are pretty noticeable.
@Geobros There are screenshot comparisons out there but the difference really is extraordinary. It’s like a fresh coat of paint on every model.
@Geobros without a doubt this looks better than the PlayStation original release. If you were to bust out the ol’ PSOne, or wait til 10 different YouTube accounts do a side by side comparison... you’ll see it too.
@Geobros Methinks you have some nostalgia tinted recollections of how FF8 looked on a PS1.
This "remastered" should be removed from the title as there is absolutely no remastered thing in this re-release. Shame...
I just watched a video of Angelo (US) from the original out of curiosity; all those saying "this isn't remastered" or "what changed" are absolutely tripping. Look at Rinoa's face, for Pete's sake.
@KingBowser86 they improved several characters and bosses, and that so much for the remaster......Rinoa's face is ugly as in the original game and i just cannot speak about Squall anymore...boy, they butchered him a lot...
so why can't I pre-order on the eshop yet? Its been up on Live/PSN for a week now
My Plan B for FF VIII Physical release = Buy the PS1 version as well
On another note, I just received something else from Square Enix in the mail today: Collection of Mana.
@BlackenedHalo obviously they can’t make some people happy.
@Geobros The differences is that if you play the old one on your HDTV without any decent upscale it will look like dog poop.
I'm ok with minor graphical improvements. I mean if they wanted to make it look like a 2019 3D-game should then they'd have to make everything again from ground up. I appreciate the cleaner character models. But what I'm really into in these remasters are the features. If this one has faster loading times between "screens" and loading battles, 2x or 4x or something speed and the option for no encounters, I'm happy.
@BlackenedHalo Your opinion is noted.
This is one of my favorites! Excited to play it again!
@BlackenedHalo Granted, SE has some weird style choices on human anatomy.

The woof among us.
@BlackenedHalo Eh I think you may misremember because outside cutscenes and battles the faces were indecipherable and pixelated. Which is probably why they focused on gestures for emotions.
There's a lot more visual clarity in the characters in this remaster.
I guess "Remastered" does not mean what it once did.
I guess $19.99 gets you PS2 levels. In a year or so another $29.99 will get you a PS3 level "remaster" of this remastered 🙄
Still doesn’t justify not giving us a physical
Now I have the urge to drop by an acquaintance's house and cuddle with their Great Pyrenees. Stupid pet articles keep making me want my own....
The dog was the best character in FF8 and the dog from 6 was better.
@Bunkerneath yeah I’m kind of sad about that too. Now that all three of the PS1s are remastered; I’m hoping for a collection.
@Retron
Or even better, Squall is dead!

@Agramonte Remastered means exactly what it always meant. The exact same game, with improved resolution, lighting, textures and/or sound quality, but no changes to modeling, art direction, or overall story and only minor QoL differences in gameplay.
People seem to not understand that remasters are... well... remasters, not remakes.
@link3710 I think you just made the definition of remaster up.
@Geobros Because that's exactly what it is:
"To create a new version from the original. It may refer to audio, video or film remastering, in which the original recording or film is located and becomes the input to more modern or sophisticated editing and publishing processes. It may also refer to software remastering, which enhances a version of source code for distribution to a new audience."
A heavily enhanced version (with substantial changes in backgrounds, lightning, polygon count etc) would fit better in the "remake" category if you ask me...
@Crono1973
No, I did not:

Yay Final Fantasy doggies (and doggies period :3)! Forget Meteor, Holy, Omnislash, etc. Angelo Cannon is one of the greatest, most badass abilities in all of gaming!!!!
Played this game so much and I have 7 which am trying to start but something is holding me back. 7 was my fave game of all time in my youth along with metal gear and chrono trigger. I remember how hard it was to get the items to make the lion heart squalls main weapon. Before people had the Internet to Google it. Was a buzz when got it. Anyway its a great game 👍😎
@link3710 Wait so now you need a 'Remake" to get wide screen... there is nothing "remastered" about that floor texture.
Fan sites do a better job with HD texture and shader Packs for old PC games than this nonsense. This is getting lazier by the sec.
@Dr_Lugae no, actually it is the same..overall...all the animations are intact, there are just refined character models, but not all of them ..sadly
@rushiosan nope, it would still be a remaster over the original game
@link3710 funny is, that this remaster has new models of several characters D
I'm not a fan of dogs or pets in general, but I sure am a Rinoa fan. Cannot wait for this game!!!
Those are some good chunky pupper pics. I wish they'd release a compilation cartridge with classic FF games on it, especially FF 6, which I hope eventually comes to Switch!
I'm more of a cat person myself.
If people are so hung up over the remastered title, then don't get the bloody game, sheesh
Not sure if this looks better or worse than Turok 2.
This crap is the remaster? This is insulting
@BlackenedHalo Highly debatable.
