A Super Mario Maker 2 player who goes by the name 'YTSunny' on YouTube, has created the "worst ever" version of the first level in the original Super Mario Bros. game on the NES.
This recreation of Level 1-1 comes with a tiny twist. While it mimics the exact layout of the original, it's filled to the brim with rotating fire bars you would normally encounter in Bowser's castle. If making it to the end wasn't already challenging enough, you're also racing against the clock. You'll no doubt be spurred on to move a little bit faster because of the in-game music.
Take a look at the level in action below:
If you would like to try this one out yourself, here's the code: YXL-D4C-TQF. At the time of writing, it has a clear rate of 0.01%. Be sure to also check out the Nintendo Life Super Mario Maker 2 course sharing tool, if you haven't already.
Will you be trying out this course? Have you seen any other crazy recreations of level 1-1? Tell us below.

Super exact with 2 seconds to spare. It's all or nothing.😑
...Of course my 1-1 Advanced Remix barely gets any love back on the original Maker. >:c
i will beat this level someday lol
I try it five times and gave up then I finally beat Cuphead more easily now.
That was an amazing run!
Challenge accepted.
I believe these are commonly called Kaizo levels. Stupidly difficult and chaotic.
Personally I find this sort of thing obnoxious even while I respect that someone managed to clear it in order to upload it.
That is, assuming they didn't use a "developer door". Which is where they hide a secret door that basically lets them skip all the non-sense.
Looks like a level I will never beat. But i’ll try it out.
OK

Someone did it
How much would it cost to advertise my levels as a NintendoLife article?
So it's basically Cloudberry Kingdom on crack.
@Heavyarms55
I’m in the same boat. Though I respect the intricacies of many of these levels, I’m far more impressed with those rare levels that feel like they belong in the original games. So many creators are taking the kitchen sink approach. All the more power to them, I guess.
Yeah let’s not make posts about fun clever levels let’s post about this trash.
This is awful. This is immaculate.
Man, Mario Maker 2 is such a joke. I regret buying it. All the levels are just troll-y time sinks. The story mode is OK, but the editor is way too simplistic, and only murder machine garbage levels like this get attention online. I wish I didn’t buy this game.
I still like trying whacky Kaizo levels a dozen times or so - sometimes I happen to have a knack for the mechanic at play, sometimes I don't and get frustrated.
@Ryan_Again Given the levels are user generated, somebody is bound to make the kind of levels you like eventually. The more time passes the more likely that becomes.
I feel like 30% of the SMM2 levels are a remake of W1-1.
Please stop.
@Ryan_Again Interesting take. Just avoid ultra hard levels or whatever they are called. I've been really impressed with the levels overall – and expected far far more garbage levels than I've had.
And if you do google search you can find whole games worth of levels that are beautifully realised, fun to play and are of a nice level of change (as in not stupidly difficult). The first of '3rd Bunny's' 32 SMW levels is R64-4YI-B7G. It's excellent – Nintendo quality. I'm even using the like button to indicate whether I've collected all the optional key coins on his levels.
And stuff like this will appear more and more if you do searches for it. And when you find a level that's a bit special Star that maker – then go into his/her profile and find all there other levels. I've got masses of quality stuff starred already. More than I can manage really.
@Rubbercookie I like your attitude. Thanks for not scolding me for venting my frustration online. Maybe you’re right?
@brunojenso Thank you for the tip! It’s true I’ve found some good ones too. I’m not sure why I’m so salty. I think I was just expecting something different which is kind of my own fault. Thanks for sharing some good stages!
@Maxz If you could figure out the patterns the level is actually quite easy especially with no enemies on screen. Once I figure the right path and the right movement to go with then it's easily conquered.
@Ryan_Again Nah man it's cool. You're not being salty – we just have different takes/likes/experiences. There are load's of critically acclaimed games I just don't get. And others I totally love and can't believe how much the critics hated on it. It's all good. I just hope you find some fun in your purchase – but if you don't, you don't.
To be honest – good as I find SMM2, it has made me go back to the Nintendo crafted platformers more of the past, and made me re-appreciate purposely crafted full games. I hope 'Maker' games are not the 'last word in Nintendo 2D platformers' - and I'm praying for 3D World to get ported already. Or maybe a 3D Land 2 for Switch?
@Ryan_Again For the most part I agree with you. Nintendo couldn't even let us remake the first level in Super Mario World for crying out loud! It sucks. It truly, truly does. I don't give a toss about being able to transition to another game style on the fly. I would prefer all the options per game style, and stick with it till its done. FFS Nintendo...
and respect the effort that goes into making and clearing these levels and theyre entertaining to watch in vids, but i will not hesitate to Boo this if i ever encountered this online
@TheActualGold I would like to know this too!
But seeing the source is Kotaku, maybe the criterium is just 'being sjw enough'. 😝
@Ryan_Again Do you mostly search in "popular courses" by any chance? I find better luck with "Hot Courses" myself and often find really clever and well put together levels, and less of the trolly/youtuber type levels that end up in popular
Basically a pattern learning exercise with some precision jumping involved. Looks cool to see it being cleared but it's honestly not that big of a deal.
It'd be a lot harder if there wasn't a completion video to use as reference. Then again, having it is only fair because technically the creator also beat it by knowing his own patterns.
It's funny, but also I would hate to play that.
@Nathan yeah, that bugs me too. So many of the original World levels can’t be replicated, it’s infuriating. Similarly with New SMB U too - due to the lack of many of the New power-ups.
@sanderev Whilst I appreciate that clones of the original 1-1 are overdone, I personally find that taking something familiar and trying to put your own unique twist on it is a good way of getting used to all the tools available in the system (or not). But then it’s time to move on.
This is exactly why I got no digs on this game.
I think I got a gray hair or two from watching the successful run alone. Even Lost Levels wasn't so brutal.
I usually give these levels a try but to be honest I never enjoy them. I just prefer levels with more of a puzzle focus. Personally I'm trying to make some adventure/puzzle courses that really make you think but give you plenty of time to clear them 😹
MM2 is incredibly good. I have no interest in hard levels, but I appreciate the effort to make them. Personally, I am making levels that are relatively easy, but that have a (hopefully) good flow to them. They are almost rhythmic.
Online courses are great, I expected more "bad" (super hard) levels, but so far most of them are enjoyable. I can't recommend this game enough!
Kinda wanna play this level...
I try to make fun, easy levels, but I think they end up being too easy to be much fun. It is difficult, at least for me, to find the perfect balance.
Could have been worse, could have had the enemies from 1-1 included
When I see games with levels like this...i'm like "i will shut this game and will never touch it again". I really can't be bothered anymore with games with such annoying levels. Well each his own
Mario maker 2 became a "Kaizo Maker", replacing the Lunar ips and other rom editors. Is seldom i see a normal creative level on this game, is only Kaizos style with 0,00000001% of clear rate .
I made a level just like this but it's a little more beatable.
Guys, take it easy. You can always make your own levels, look for the beatable ones... don't get angry for the insanely difficult ones. Just skip them.
I think i am having a panic attack again . Damn!!!
Nope stages like that are a waste of time and space..and they guy did it to troll people...Stages like that are a cancer to Mario Maker and im not going to waste my time playing it as there are so many better stages to play then this garbage
@Joeynator3000 Why did people dislike your post?
@ForgottenArctic .....What are you talking about?
@Joeynator3000 You have three dislikes.
I don't see any dislikes on my posts....
@Azikira i hated that game. Needlessly brutal. But there are people who make a living on that stuff.
@tendonerd The game is actually quite easy once you understand how the procedural generation works. I think it even has a guide you can watch go through the level, and really helps. Though Cloudberry Kingdom doesn't usually make you go back to the left ever, just going right and pausing.
While everyone has a line that SMM2 levels cross with respect to difficulty, remember that SMM2 has no lives and quick respawn time. That does change level design in that a designer can create a hard level as a puzzle to figure out as long as there isn't too much consequence for failure. That doesn't mean there isn't good and bad level design, but creating a really hard level isn't in itself bad when there's no real penalty for failure.(Unless you're playing the infinite mode, but I don't do that usually because it doesn't mesh with the idea of taking my time to figure out someone's level) It just becomes a question of what you enjoy. It's fine if you prefer higher clear rate levels. No judgement.
I would repeat suggestions to avoid the most popular levels list: it's usually too influenced by YouTubers. Hot Levels is a better list because instead of showing the most played levels, it shows recent levels with a number of likes, while online communities are often the best ways to find levels. I mostly use NintendoLife's forum page and StephenPlay's Morning Mario website, but there are others. Because I do so, I almost never run into troll levels or kaizo levels so far (occasionally a bad level, but plenty of good ones too). There's a lot of levels out there made by good designers or even professional designers.
@ItsOKToBeOK
😱
I don't waste my time of levels like this, lol. If it's tough, but readable I'll really try and beat it. If it's just sheer chaos... Eh, no interest.
A true nightmare.
