Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night might be in need of some desperate performance fixes on the Switch, but that hasn't stopped Koji "Iga" Igarashi and his team from releasing the backer's DLC. Following on from last week's approval by Nintendo, the "Iga's Back Pack" is now available on the Switch eShop.
As noted, you'll get this DLC sent to you in a code if you backed the game and spent more than $60. Otherwise, you'll need to buy this additional content from the eShop for $9.99 / £8.99 / €9.99.
With "Iga's Back Pack" you will receive access to the powerful and fan favorite Swordwhip weapon, as well as an epic encounter against a super powerful boss; Koji Igarashi himself!
The performance update is expected to arrive around mid-July and will enhance the overall performance of the game. For the full rundown about this incoming update, check out last week's post.
Have you been looking forward to trying out this DLC pack? How has your experience been with the Switch version of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night? Tell us below.
I'm really not that excited about Iga's Back Pack unless his Backpack is full of performance updates.
Despite its flaws, it's a really fun game! I can only imagine the performance fixes will only make this shiny gem shine brighter.
I haven't bought it and don't plan too...
@N8tiveT3ch Ok, thanks for letting us know! Man, my day’s just been made a whole lot better hearing about that!
They should NOT be releasing paid DLC until they fix this mess. I'm really starting to think twice about buying it even after the updates come.
how about fixing the game issues like improving the performance/fps/resolution problems and polishing the graphics abit as well.
@nessisonett at least someone enjoys my comments on this website. Looks like everything is coming up milhouse.
I passed over this game at the store today because of the issues I've heard about it. Perhaps those should be addressed before releasing paid DLC.
Errr, how about fixing what is already out for the people holding out to play it on Switch.
I just want my updates so I can start playing . I'm trying to hold out until we get some updates that fix some of the issues on switch.
Why is the Switch DLC out before the performance update? Someone's got their priorities out of order...
Uummmmmm......maybe fix the game before trying to get the switch fanbase to spend more money? This just seems like a scumbag move
This DLC was once supposed to be exclusive content for backers at certain tiers. 505 saw dollar signs and announced shortly before release that the exclusive stuff they dangled in front of people in order to get them to spend more to back the game wasn't exclusive anymore. It didn't affect me, and I'm not a big fan of exclusive content, but they did promise it, so I thought it was a shady move anyway. But that's why there's DLC already. It wasn't the only shady thing 505 did involving the game. That's why I sold my game key on release day since they refused to refund people affected by cancellations of the Mac and Linux versions. I have no plans to play it now.
How brazen to release DLC before the core game has been fixed. Pathetic.
Won’t be purchasing this game until I hear that the issues are fixed. And from the sounds of it, they were bad enough that that may never happen. Lot of work to do...
No fixes, no buy.
Okay so people here are mad about this horrifically bad Switch port receiving DLC before they fix the port. I agree, the Switch version sucks horribly. But this DLC was planned to exist at launch, and in fact was already out at launch for PC versions.
This DLC only adds one boss and one weapon - these were planned from the very beginning to be Kickstarter backer exclusive. However some backers raised concerns that the majority of players in the future will never have access to this content if it were to stay exclusive to just the backers. The compromise was that this stuff would be available to backers for free, and players in the future who wanted it would have to pay a bit extra for it, just like the backers who paid a bit extra back in 2015 during the fundraising campaign.
@EarthboundBenjy My problem is that the one system that absolutely needs a performance update got the DLC first. Which means they've been focusing on the DLC instead of getting the game to run better.
If I remember well they should be submitting patch today?
First I want a patch, later I will get the bsckpack
I’ve been enjoying the game to be honest but releasing dlc before an update is pretty low surely that should be the priority to fix before adding to the game
@almost everyone above.
Releasing this is mostly for the backers, like me, who paid $ 60 or more for the game. The DLC was already on other platforms.
Fix the phuggin game first!!!
Right I downloaded it, does anyone know what it does?? Can't see anything new or different in my game??
Oh I got it now, talk to quest lady, kill IGA and get sword whip. DON'T BUY this!! It's just a backer thing that they have made publicly available so people don't moan. But I suspect people will buy it and then moan because it's not worth it. But I figure the Devs know that either way people will moan and at least this way they'll make a few quid
I'll probably get it at some point, but the contents don't sound like the amount to be in a hurry for, especially when you've just started the game and have the multitude of default bosses and weapons to discover yet.
Contrary to many commenters, I can live without the performance update for now, too. The mileage proves to vary here again - I've seen some slowdowns (oddly enough, in book animations for the most part), but I've yet to encounter any noticeable input lag - even weapon skills and backstep combos work. Why am I not surprised? ¯(ツ)/¯ The rest is a really impressive game so far, even if some of its wows already stem from the last Igavanias - I haven't caught up with Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia yet. And no, I haven't caught up with SotN yet either, but my top faves in the franchise so far are still the Sorrow dilogy, and Bloodstained sure looks like a candidate to match that plank.
Hmm...fixing the game first and THEN releasing DLC would have been a much smarter move...
Got the physical in my backlog, but also waiting until a patch is released to sort out performance before playing it.
@N8tiveT3ch people are are too sensitive and mostly wanna-be sjws who dislike your comments because they can't tolerate different opinions. Basically this generation summed up.
I honestly don't have a problem with them adhering to their development roadmap of getting this one DLC ready, that was planned before they stated their commitment to fixing the performance issues for the Switch release.
It doesn't look good, but I get it, their development was already in motion and it would've been harder to drop the DLC development at this stage.
Just because they released the dlc before fixing the game does not mean that delayed the fix.
They will most likely have different people for different tasks and the people porting the dlc would not necessarily have been that much hell. People usually do have stuff they specialize in...
Apart from that, like some already mentioned, this dlc was already promised and even paid for by backers.
Releasing that is kinda important as well.
1) Cool, now that the DLC that already existed for the build on PC is available on other platforms, everything should be synced and up-to-date for them to focus on the performance side of things moving forward. It's a much smarter idea to make sure all builds are on the same page and everything is merged in before trying to tinker with stuff. ((And there's a good chance whatever development repository system is being used, they have already merged this stuff in and are doing the performance work and have been formsome time, but the DLC release had hoops to jump through that just took time to go through. Again, the DLC was day one on PC.))
2) I have the game on both PC and Switch and have been playing the latter since its release. My game has over 23 hours clocked on it and while the difference is indeed noticeable and I have experienced some problems, it's far from a buggy unplayable mess. Yes, the graphics, particularly the 3D dialogue models, are a downgrade. Yes, I have experimced a couple spots of "processing freeze". Yes, I have had it crash on me. But it has only crashed once, and the number of "freezes" I can count on one hand, So, while I would direct people to other platforms if they have the means, my own experience hardly accounts for "don't buy the Switch version ever".
You all are overreacting to this. Just because they released the DLC that they already had planned does not mean they're not going to fix the switch port. Remember how they took the graphics criticism and fixed the visuals? I have faith they'll do the same here. Besides, the performance issues are overblown anyway. Yes, it is noticable, and yes, they need to fix it, but you're acting like the switch version is unplayable.
Awesome. Just hope that they release the performance updates today or soon.
I haven't come across the huge issues that others have complained about, although I haven't played the game much, been distracted with Super Mario Maker 2 and Crash Team Racing. So far it's been a great experience, and will get back to it soon.
@dougphisig same here. Patiently waiting. Steamworld Dig 2 sale this weekend should hold me over
Outside of fixing the input lag, I doubt much else will improve. The game is already pushing the switch hardware. Games like DOOM run on Switch because they effectively display at 520p for all intents and purposes.
Enjoying this on the one X at 4k 60fps though.
@thebainiac "Besides, the performance issues are overblown anyway."
Go play literally any other version of the game. The base Xbox version even.
They released this when they did for the backers. That's fine, I get that. But I kinda feel like 25% of the game cost for a single boss fight in an existing location for a new weapon is real damned steep.
People need to calm the hell down. The paid DLC was mostly completed before launch as it was part of the development cycle. And resources are not being diverted away from performance updates and bug fixes for this. This was pre-planned for years, while bug fixes and development updates need to be addressed as these issues pop up, and have a completely separate team that specializes in these kinds of issues working on it.
It's amazing to me how entitled people who have no clue about game development can be.
Straight up man. I could buy it on the Xbox One X (or even my old ps4 that I pretty much gave away), but this is definitely the sort of game that I'd want portable. Maybe instead of this clown stroking his ego & rushing to sell people DLC with him as a boss being part of the selling point he gets his @$$ in gear & as hastily help fix the version of the game for the folks who have shown you the most love? I don't have the game yet, so it doesn't really bother me at all, but I find it pretty scummy the way that he's done Switch owners of the game who've been a major factor in his game's success.
Maaaan please, this game isn't pushing chit. You can find games from last gen that look about as good as this.
@gameboy1975 Kickstarter, to me, has basically turned into just non taxable loans.
You advertise a product, get free money and then you can do what you want. Hopefully you you give people that supported you what they gave you cash for but there's nothing making them do so. It's why I don't do kickstarters, too much risk for a reward I'm not even sure I'll get.
Well to be fair, they are fixing the game as well. It's not like they're not doing that. I just figure if Switch owners have to wait for the game to be up to par that they can wait for the DLC as well. Especially in this day and age when things happen like it did with say a game like project cars. You never know once they have your money. I try to take people at their word, but this is a whole different industry then it was when I first started (or hell even a gen or 2 ago).
@nhSnork Hey! The comment section uses BBcode. That means that the character, by itself, will basically vanish. So you get:
To fix this, use two backslashes instead of one. Looks like this \ \
Despite the performance issues and crashes (oh god all the crashes) I can't deny it was a really well made game underneath all that. Hope they fix it soon. I already 100 percented it and I'm waiting for the rest of the DLC stuff to be added. Hopefully it's running more stable by then.
I bought this for 32 physical on Amazon, and yea....performance just isn't there. It seems fun, but also more difficult than Symphony of the Night. I might snag the DLC if they do some performance updates.
Patch is coming. DLC was for backers. I purchased this on Steam.
with “Iga’s Back Pack” you will receive access to the powerful and fan favorite Swordwhip weapon, as well as an epic encounter against a super powerful boss; Koji Igarashi himself! ~ ya it is not "much" of a dlc, but I am happy having everything for the game ~ 42$
Looking forward to the 13 other free dlcs and playable characters.
@Spudtendo Paid DLC if you werent a backer. For backers it is one of the expected updates that was delayed from launch. Performance improvements coming.
@Cotillion Paid DLC if you werent a backer. For backers it is one of the expected updates that was delayed from launch. Performance improvements coming.
@Stu13 @gameboy1975 Content was going to be backer exclusive but backer voted to make DLC for others. Those who lost the vote are complaining. Likely steep price to try to appease both sides as it wasnt cheap to back ($100 for me).
@SuperRetroArt Wait, shouldn't this add a bunch of other things like Chaos mode, boss rush mode, coop mode, etc.? Or were these planned free updates they are still working on?
@Tootzo Those features must be in another dlc pack still to come in the future. This one just adds ONE new boss, really not worth paying for. I got it free as a backer so it's a nice bonus but I wouldn't be happy if I'd paid for it. (Boss rush is already available after completing the game)
@Fuwa Have you been playing on TV in docked mode? Because I've 100% it and am currently 75% through a new game+ and I still haven't had one crash yet!! The reason I ask is because I have just played handheld, maybe it's more stable in handheld?
I’ll only get the game once the patch comes out.
Still have this shrink wrapped and wondering if I should just return it for CTR.
I made an account to simply say you missed the whole point of what the poster you replied to was saying. Smh
@MFMoney How so? I was going based off of that Twitter announcement. The DLC may be available to backers but, according to that post, it was initially first on sale for Switch. Well before the Switch patch and before the hitting the PS and XB stores.
@Spudtendo You are aware that the Dlc was in the works before the game was launched? They have stated numerous times that patch fixes are coming and they have pooled there resources specifically for the Switch ver. Dlc was part of the release plan, patches were not. The patches are coming.
@leathco The game is not hard you just have to grind and learn it's play mechanics. Honestly the game is stupid easy. Only two of the bosses were actually hard. But the game is still fun and it's fine. 100% easy.
