One of the angriest Nintendo characters is probably Mr. Resetti from the Animal Crossing series. If you've ever encountered him yourself, you'll know he's the guy that pops up out of the ground and tells you off when you forget to save. You might have even met his brother Don Resetti if you were particularly naughty.
Well, we've got some upsetting news to share today. It looks like Mr. Resetti has lost his job. Yep, during an interview with Mashable at E3 2019, Animal Crossing: New Horizons project lead Aya Kyogoku confirmed Mr. Resetti would be replaced at the Reset Surveillance Center by a new auto-save function.
"Unfortunately because there's no necessity to reset the game or reset button on the Switch, Mr. Resetti had a hard time. He was laid off from his position."
Despite how sad long-time fans are likely to be about Nintendo's decision to let the mole go, Kyogoku believes it's for the best:
"I think this will be a positive thing for the player because in New Horizons you can stop playing in the middle of your game and it'll still save."
Fortunately, she was able to reveal Mr. Resetti is currently looking for new work:
"We also believe that Mr. Resetti is looking for a new job after his layoff. So please look forward to that."
This now has us wondering what's going on with his brother, Don. We guess he's been laid off as well.
Alarmingly, this isn't the first time something like this has happened in the Animal Crossing series. The town mayor Tortimer retired in Animal Crossing: New Leaf and it's believed Frillard – the frilled-necked lizard – passed away.
How do you think Mr. Resetti could be put to use in the upcoming Animal Crossing game for Switch? Tell us below.

But I liked him
ooooooooobs!!!
Oh great even in the fictional world of Video Games machines are taking all the jobs. Animal Crossing got too real
Tooooooo bad
he was always rude anyways, so for me l'm happy that he lost his job. Even l won't play this game but l'm still happy.
Looks like there will be no soft resets. I wonder what his new job will be.
Another case of automation killing jobs
@Mr_Persona THEN MAYBE YOU SHOULD REMEMBER TO SAVE BEFORE SHUTTING OFF THE GAME!!!
Sounds like he will still be in the game in some fashion, and that is good. I actually think it is pretty cool to integrate the 4th wall like this.
Poor Mr. Resetti...He's got real world problems now. XD
Now Mr. Resetti can find a job in SMASH! (as a playable fighter)
Boooooooooooooooooo!
Well at least it appears he will still be in the game in some capacity.
Can’t wait to see him hanging out in the Roost cafe all day every day, drinking Irish coffees and nattering endlessly about the good old days.
Do you think Tortimer is still alive? Well, I suppose turtles can get really old so maybe.
Looks like artificial intelligence has even taken jobs of video game characters
Lol, I wonder where he is going to pop up unexpectedly to give you a rant.
I hope this means they'll be letting the player have more control over where new villagers are moving in. I remember using the reset-move strategy to get my new villagers move into the spots I wanted before they made them unable to move on paths in that one update.
With autosaves, the above method is impossible.
How we can cancel a loan from to Tom nook and a shopping spree if we can’t reset??
Once I had read he's looking for a new job I couldn't help but smile
So, i wonder how do we get specific villagers on New Horizons.
Better Nintendo let us to choose which villager to move in or move out without being forced to get Random villagers.
Just like MySims Wii.
He’ll be back, just with a new role.
Preorder cancelled.
Oh, he's not gone. He's finally done it.
Now you CAN'T reset without saving.
He did it, he won.
So he’ll either:
1) Be found queueing at the Job Centre and ranting “Dey took ma job!!!”
2) Fund and build up a new Start-up company called Scram Inc.
3) Return to home base having completed his long term surveillance mission to lead the long awaited invasion of the surface world by the Mole People Kingdom.
He'll be the (not so) cheerful, island greeter and towel boy.
It seems like he'll have a new purpose though based on what they said. Maybe a loan shark? Nook'll hire him as muscle to get you to pay your loan.
'Resetti Bros Enforcement Agency'
Aw, I love Resetti.
This also sucks because now you really can't reset if you've messed up something, which is a bit scary. Resetti was there to penalize you if you do so, but you know, sometimes it's worth an extra three minutes of your life to undo something in AC.
Thank god. I've wanted autosave for years
@DarkKirby @ReaderRagfish Are you saying boo or boo-urns?
I read that statement as he'll be getting his own spin-off game, but yeah I guess having a new job to do is a more probable outcome. Maybe he's gone to join Smash.
@King-X And cockroaches and pitfalls everywhere
Thank goodness for that. Have had my dealings with him in the past... Never reset on purpose (power cuts, ds running out of power, 3ds went through a phase of random freezing before a Nintendo repair) and can say it's worse than being told off by my wife. Though it's close on how much they both go on, and on, and on... Glad he will be in it still. Looking forward to next year.
Side note what a year it's going to be. Especially at E3. Nintendo saved it this year but next year we will have Sony and Microsoft doing their willy waving about next gen and no doubt Nintendo Will have some special stuff hidden away too. Great time to game people!
I've only seen him once. I forgot to save. Never had a reason to reset a game like Animal Crossing.
His music loop played in my head as I read the article. I hope to see you sometime down the trail, Mr. Resetti!
Maybe he’ll send you strongly worded letters if you haven’t made a loan payment in a while. Or show up at your door and not leave until you pay at least one bell towards your loan.
Hoping this means that time is managed by an online server and not the console’s clock.
First he was cut in Smash Bros. as an assist trophy, now he's losing his job. Poor guy can't get a break.
Quick. Get Billy Bragg to stage a benefit for him.
Well, i'll actually miss this mot..f... mole.
I was actually one of his worst enemy because i'm one of these type of guys who enjoyed trigger him that's why i spent much time simple restart the console without saving. Than again it's not that of an big deal for me due the Game still looks great.
In a wild twist of fate, he'll probably get a job that helps players "Reset" things instead of lecturing them about resetting.
Especially with an auto-save function, it'd be nice for there to be an out from major mistakes.
And to think, the newest AC might just have higher stakes than the latest Fire Emblem. :V
Whaaaaaaat? The DS and 3DS didn't have reset buttons! That didn't stop them from using him when you just shut off the power or closed the game! Not really sure I like autosaving... there's been so many times I didn't like something and just wanted to reset.
But what about my Mr. Resetti amiibo?
If he isn't in the game that's just lame. Seriously, they gotta make him pop up just once and give his spiel so our character can say - Thanks, but I'm good. Really they do.
What about Isabelle?
I liked visiting with him in City Folk and New Leaf, so I hope they’ll let us do that in New Horizons as well.
I want to see Mr. Resetti starring in his own franchise: a Nintendofied, fourth-wall-breaking version of the movie Falling Down where he has to fix everything that is wrong with modern video games. Your move, Nintendo.
Aww, I really liked him. Whitney on the other hand, she can go jump in the river.
I'm pretty sure there the ones running the Amiibo Service most likely. Just a guess of course, nothing solid.
"We also believe that Mr. Resetti is looking for a new job after his layoff. So please look forward to that."
My apologies for awaking you at this unseemly time of the night, Mr. uh-Villager. I'm here on the behalf of a certain mutual business acquaintance of ours. Mr. Nook is very disappointed in you. Mr. Nook is a very generous tanuki. He loans folks like yous a considerable amount of bells, and all he asks in return is to be paid back in a timely fashion. So Mr. Nook has asked ol' Risetti here to pay a friendly little visit to this fine tent yous have placed here and take a look at where you may have eh-accidentally misplaced his bells. Ya'know. Help ya' find 'em. That's a very nice Antique Radio you've got on that there Forest Coffee Table. So what I'm gonna do, is I'm gonna take this here shovel, and I'm gonna help you search every corner of your tent here for the bells you seem to have inconveniently misplaced here, and Mr. Nook would very much like to have returned to him, perhaps you might remember where they might be. Perhaps my associates here can help jog your memory while I look. These guys here...they're very good partners. They're brothers, really, ain't that right boys? Mr. Mario and Mr. Luigi here are going to help you remember......
Let him punish you for Time Traveling too much!
A video game NPC just lost his job to automation.
Amazing.
@FineLerv you want the game to be online only?
As long as he scolds me in the new job
Not a fan of auto saving in general. I don't mind it if it's a automatic save i can chose next to manual saving. Also i want to keep the option to set the clock to advance in time, can't be asked to play the first few days sporadically.
I always thought Resetti was hilarious when I was a kid, but he scared my little sister. I understand why they took out the sections from Wild World where you had to type in phrases with perfect punctuation before you could play the game. Some kids play Animal Crossing without really reading very well, so that might actually soft lock the game.
But autosave is a nice addition, and Animal Crossing regularly keeps characters, but puts them in different roles. Although I do miss Lyle as obnoxious insurance salesman who would chase you around every Saturday.
It will be interesting to see where he pops up--no pun intended.
This is pretty funny, as long as he is still in the game that is ok! I am looking forward to seeing the new position of one of the staple and best characters in the series.
I hope this means all of the old characters are still there to some extent at least, like Reese, Blathers, Pete, Etc.
@Morpheel “you want the game to be online only?”
Not necessarily. Maybe just check in with the server when possible to make sure the clock hasn’t been fiddled with.
Ha! Resetti lost his job! The crumbling economy is working! yeah!!!!!, I'm so worried!!!!
