During an interview with Twinfinite, Chris Fox of Phoenix Labs – the developer behind the upcoming free-to-play Switch release, Dauntless – revealed Iron Galaxy had helped port the game to Nintendo's hybrid device.
"We’ve been really fortunate to be working with Iron Galaxy to bring it to the Switch and like, they really know what they’re doing when it comes to that hardware."
Iron Galaxy previously helped bring The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to the Switch in 2017 and followed this up with the release of Diablo III: Eternal Collection in 2018.
Dauntless has been inspired by the likes of Monster Hunter, Dark Souls and World of Warcraft – and essentially requires you to go around hunting monsters known as 'Behemoths'. View recent footage of the game shown at E3 2019 below:

Well that team has done a well enough job so far imo.
Have you seen how poorly it runs? "SPECIALISTS" My behind...
@Rika_Yoshitake Only so much they can do, if they're porting from the other console versions. Those versions also have pretty bad frame rates.
The search for a free-to-play game I want-to-play has pretty much concluded for me. After I didn’t really dig Warframe, I decided these sorts of experiences are not for me. The systems and different types of currencies available are just too needlessly obtuse for games with such simple objectives. I know live services are designed like this to keep players coming back and invested, but it has the opposite effect on me.
The choice is easy for me. Switch or Xbox One X.
Playing Dauntless in 4K + HDR instead on XBX
My PS4 is a dust collector, so it's irrrelevant for any game.
Gaming PC, Switch and Xbox One X is what i prefer.
This is a F2P I'm totally ready for
....I lost interest in this game a long time ago, and from what I can tell...the fights seem kinda boring...
Huge 10GB download only online only games are not my thing. I've enjoyed Paladins a bit. It's fairly fun and runs perfectly at 60fps. Fortnite was mildly amusing for a bit. Realm Royale left a bad taste in my mouth because it ran ok at 30fps until I started getting shot at which point it got choppier and I couldn't aim. That kind of death doesn't have to happen many times before people delete the game! At least in Paladins I have the ability to aim smoothly while others shoot me to death. Then it feels like they are actually better, and I could get better, rather than the game sucks and is too difficult to control and aim. But in general I like regular games where you can play it without internet (unless of course you're playing online multiplayer modes like in Splatoon or Rocket League).
Maybe it's just this monster or because they were playing only playing a demo version but the monster never seemed to target any of the characters. That's part of what makes Monster Hunter fights so exciting, the moment when the big ugly turns to attack you after you've stabbed it in the butt a couple times. Do all of the monsters in this game behave like this?
@sarcasmasquach it will have been targeting some of the players. I watched the video during E3 and can’t remember it specifically, but it’s based on the Shrike Behemoth which definitely uses targeted attacks against specific hunters. All of the behemoths do, but they also have AoE type attacks.
It’s actually a really fun, condensed monster hunting game. I actually prefer it to Monster Hunter BECAUSE it’s more simple.
@Ajent Thanks for the clarification. The first fight looked mostly like AoE spam but the second fight seemed to be a bit more involved. To each their own, I suppose. The endless complexity of MH is what ended up hooking me the most in the end. If Dauntless adds more weapons and monsters I might jump in at some point.
As someone who has been playing this game pretty much daily since it became a public release, I cannot wait to have this on my Switch. A true stress test of this game on Switch will be seeing how it runs a heroic Hellion...
I just hope they release it sooner than later before the hype/peoples interest fades away.
@sarcasmasquach Oh definitely each to their own... life would be boring otherwise .
I just didn’t want you to be under a false impression is all. I’d definitely recommend giving it a go, but if it’s the deep complexity of MH that you prefer you’ll probably find this game quiet simple. Fun, but simple. And free, so what’s to lose other than a couple of hours to see?
@Geeky_Ken They are the ones who helped on Skyrim.
Skyrim and Diablo 3 are 2 of my most played games on Switch, they both look and run great
@NintendoFan4Lyf Yeah I think the problem is the progression systems/loot that free-to-play live services delve into have existed in single player games for a long time. All they’ve done is spread it thin, in order to get players to jump in and “reap” whatever limited rewards are up for grabs after hours of grinding.
The advantage of a good single player curated designed experience, is that the player is constantly pushing forward, seeing new challenges, new enemies, and interesting new areas which set themselves apart in mechanics and level design.
There is the attraction of getting better at the game, but there are so many paid games that offer great offline solo content and fantastic online multiplayer that operate in tandem to each other.
In other words, these games aren’t offering anything new that I feel requires the model they have adopted.
A free to play MonHun actually scares me a bit. MH as it stands is already padded by the randomness of material drops. Where I might enjoy fighting Rathalos three or four times, I’ll end up fighting it eight or ten times because I need a specific part. I can only imagine the potential grind that a “game as service” model will bring.
Although I will say, if the gameplay itself is as fun as MonHun, than it’ll stand a chance. As soon as those fights feel boring, though...
I'm just in love with the MMO lobby center, so cool!
@Joeynator3000 I played through the tutorial and then went back to playing Monster Hunter.
@Rika_Yoshitake I thought the same. Choppy as hell
@Joeynator3000 yes boring AND animations are ugly
