Many mobile games nowadays often connect with the main release, which is normally available on more advanced hardware. For example, we've seen The Pokémon Company encourage compatibility between Pokémon GO and Pokémon: Let's Go on the Nintendo Switch in recent times.
It appears the upcoming Switch game Animal Crossing: New Horizons - due out in 2020 - will be a completely standalone experience. While it's hard to say if there'll be any support applications made available for this game at this point in time, what we can now confirm is the new entry in the lifestyle sim won't have direct connectivity with the previous 2017 mobile title, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.
In an interview with IGN at E3 2019, Nintendo’s Aya Kyogoku explained New Horizons and Pocket Camp were two unique games. In saying this, there's still expected to be "collaboration items" planned for the two games.
“We want to make sure to separate the gameplay because we feel they’re two different types of games."
We assume this means fans of the series are safe from any mobile elements, which have a tendency to suck the life out of certain video game series.
Interestingly, the only mobile connection we should expect to see in New Horizons is the fictional Nook Phone (see above), which is a device you'll receive from the greedy raccoon Tom Nook – allowing you to access various apps (menus) within the game that then let you browse furniture or tools you would like to craft, use your phone's camera and much more.
Are you looking forward to the arrival of Animal Crossing: New Horizons? Are you relieved to hear the two games won't be directly connected? Tell us down below.

Sounds good to me. I don't want the new Animal Crossing to have any connection to a mobile phone game.
I am completely okay with this. Though I love Animal Crossing and put a few hundred hours into New Leaf, I didn't like the mobile game.
I was kinda hoping they'd do something like letting players add stuff they've crafted in Pocket Camp to the shop catalogue in New Horizons. That'd have been a nice way to add a nice little bonus for playing the mobile game without outright giving the player stuff, just making getting specific things easier. That said, I'm 100% okay with them not connecting to the mobile game at all since that was the main reason I was still even playing it.
Distancing this game from Pocket Camp is such a good call. I don’t ever intend to redownload that game.
keeping both games as a stand alone experience was a good move. i do hope NH has some of the PC items tho, they had some really cool furniture and clothing items it'd be a shame to keep them in the phone game only
also take back calling tom nook a greedy raccoon you fiends my boy doesnt deserve this
I love Animal Crossing. I imported the Australian PAL version on GameCube two years before its European release; it's the only game I've ever felt inclined to import (thinking that it would never get released in Europe).
It's a wonderful game series, but I can say wholeheartedly that I very much dislike the mobile iteration. It took away the slow-burn atmosphere that I enjoy from a typical Animal Crossing - it felt like I was playing a version designed for people with very short attention spans.
I understand the reasons why (it's a mobile game, after all!), but a sense of delayed gratification and the slow burn is possibly the series strongest and unique quality.
Not a huge deal, would be nice to have some sort of bonus for having played/kept up, but it's fine.
What I really want, Pocket Camp-wise, is all the new items that have made their introduction in it to be in New Horizons. There's so many cool items in there, especially if it means more of the Splatoon/Pokémon/etc collab items.
Also, the animals being able to interact with items like they do in PC, it's fun to see them sitting and eating, or actually playing the instruments/holding items... And animals being able to wear accessories. And the back accessories (though I think this has already been spotted?)
But what about my 9 AC amiibo?
This is Great to Hear.
@rjejr same, I keep waiting for some sort of amiibo comparability announcement.
Glad to hear that. I want to be able to get all content in the game. If you want more money from it, make proper DLC packs later.
But do include the items in NH, a lot of them are really nice and all that outdoor stuff would work very well with the island theme.
Looking to be the best AC game since Population Growing. Not being tied to a grindy, time wasting, money sucking mobile game is the cherry on top.
I'm admittedly relieved by this news. Part of me wanted some connectivity for the work I already put into Pocket Camp, but the back-to-back(-to-back) events just became too overwhelming and rote to keep up with.
It's good to know I wont miss out for moving on. And I cant wait to return to a more laid back playstyle.
That said, I hope some QoL elements carry over.
Good. Pocket Camp has become a lootbox-infested festival of FOMO. At this stage I would rather we just cut it loose from the franchise.
I’d miss my hippie van and certain items, but that’s about it.
I used to play Pocket Camp until Nintendo removed support for my phone, so I'm glad there's no connection.
Good.
[yep, all I have to say Nintendo Life]
