Atmospheric survival horror game Darkwood is launching on Nintendo Switch today and a creepy - but pretty cool - launch trailer has been released to celebrate.
First announced for Switch back in the Spring Nindies Showcase, Darkwood is described as a "challenging survival horror that does not rely on jump scares". Instead, you'll be scared of your surroundings and the nightmarish forces waiting for you in the woods as you craft weapons, prepare traps, and explore during the day before hiding away at night.
Features:
- Horror without jumpscares– Darkwood is an atmospheric, psychological horror that creates the feeling of tension without the usual horror tricks. No creaking doors here!
- Day and night cycle–explore the world during the day and try to survive the night by hiding from evil forces in your shelter.
- Randomly generated map–the world will not change during your adventure with Darkwood, but it can be completely different for your friends!
- Crafting-scavenge for materials to create weapons, traps, health potions or your hideout upgrades.
- Skills and perks–learn new powers by extracting a strange essence from mutated fauna and flora and injecting it into your bloodstream.
- No hand holding–test your skills and figure things out on your own!
- Impactful decisions–decide on the world of Darkwood, its inhabitants and the story you experience.
You can pick it up from the eShop today for £12.99 / $14.99 - if you dare.

Very excited about this one. If reviews are positive I'll highly likely pick it up!
I’m intrigued by this one. Gonna wait for people’s initial impressions and reviews before I pull the trigger though.
Waiting on a review too, looks good though.
Still really on the fence about this one. Can't tell if it's something that I'd get really stuck into or something that I'd play once for an hour and then never touch again.
Game looks very interesting, but I hate complex crafting. How complex is the crafting in this one?
I have this on PC, and while it's a very cool looking, creepy game, I found the controls confusing, and the gameplay in general very difficult to get a handle on. If I didn't play it for a few days, I felt like I had to take a bit of time just to relearn how to do basic things like use items or swing a weapon. I'd love to give it another try if they could tweak it to be a little more intuitive, cause it definitely seems like something I would enjoy a lot otherwise.
Why does it release on different days? Lol
Looks weird but had to check it out first before buying.
@RickD It really does look great in motion. There's something about the art that gives it a neat depth. The audio is also pretty fantastic.
I still have it installed, maybe I should try playing with a keyboard instead of a controller for a bit and see how it feels.
