Square Enix has announced Star Ocean: First Departure R will be released on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in the near future. This particular version of the action role-playing game was first launched on the PlayStation Portable in 2007.
The enhanced PSP iteration is based on the Super Famicom Star Ocean game – published by Enix, developed by tri-Ace and originally released in 1996. The high definition versions of the remake for Switch and PS4 will include new features and a worldwide release has also been confirmed.

I'm am a little, let's see what else they have to show on this.
A remaster of a remake, ported to Switch. This is getting complicated!
Hope this opens up for the second game coming to Switch as well.
Is this the first time Star Ocean has been on a Nintendo console?
sign me up, last time i played a star ocean game was the ps3 one which name escapes me
@abbyhitter no
Star Ocean 2 is phenomenal. I never played the first so I'm all in here if it's anything like 2 and nothing like the newer ones.
Just looked up some video of the PSP version... Looks outstanding for those of us who grew up with RPGs in the 90s.
@FarkyValentine did you mean the 2D style? i'd be shocked if they went back to that
I just want it to look and play like a psone game... Prerendered static backdrops and 3d fights.
I mean the first one's only about 15 hours long, but ok...
This is awesome!🤯
Loved this on PSP so this will be a day one purchase for me. And looks like it's using the superior original Super Famicom character designs too Fingers crossed for Second Evolution too!
As RPG's are my favourite genre i can't wait. I usually pick up any RPG with review scores of 7 or above. But with so many RPG's of late i've raised that to an 8 or above standard. And sadly that 240p trailer isn't doing this game justice or any good.
@abbyhitter The series started on SNES. Japan-only, though.
Oh man, that glorious 240p youtube trailer of the PSP release. <3
Anyway... cool! More JRPGs is always a good thing. It's likely going straight onto my wishlist, though.
Woah, that's something I fancied but never really expected to happen so soon. While the game has obviously been portable before (there's even an undubbed image, but here's hoping "the new features" will render that one obsolete as well), it's a definite buy on Switch for me - and, let's be honest, the first actual opportunity to buy it. An awesome game opening a delicious science fantasy franchise, and its original incarnation (never localized but fan-translated since) was definitely one of the best SNES games out there.
Here's to this being only the beginning. The series is just five flagship games long so far (not counting Blue Sphere, but Square Enix remembering and dusting off that GBC gem might cause pineapples to grow on pine trees), and I'm in the market for all of them (which also means that any readers of this comment can spare me their 'seasonal rot' opinions, I've heard it all before).
Grandia, Langrisser, now Star Ocean... How long before Lunar turns up on Switch for its umpteenth reappearance? I love how these classic series just can’t stay buried for long.
Eh. All we really need is Star Ocean the Second Evolution
This is absolutely amazing news, I love the Star Ocean series!!
Never played this game series yet but thought that the ip was owned by sega. Learned something new today
Oh that's actually amazing! I actually quite enjoyed what little I played of it on the PSP, but I just found playing a big RPG like that on the teeny pspgo screen to be a bit of a pain.
I'm a big fan of SO:Second Story And the SO1 remake seemed easily the most similar in comparison within the seriesso I'm definitely excited.
Whack timing. Was gonna go looking online for copy of the psp ones and now with this announcement I'll just wait n see how this turns out.
I loved Star Ocean 2 back in the day, both the anime and the game.
Never played Star Ocean 1, but I understand it's about Claude C. Kenny's father. I didn't know there was a PSP remake, and I'm super psyched that remake is being ported to Switch.
@Krull Last I heard, the Grandia connection on Switch was slated for 'winter 2018'. Where the heck did it go?
@BacklogBlues don't forget the that you have to judge a game by yourself. A "review score" doesn't mean anything. It's still an opinion from the reviewer and not a fact. If you like what you see go for it. Don't let them cloud your judgement! You need to wake up. You're welcome
btw they gave here Atelier Sudie a 6. A great A game and yet got a 6. A lengthy game and great RPG level up system and monsters and alchemy and they weren't pleased here. That game should've gotten at least a 7! A 6 was just a slap in our "fans" faces. To me it's a 9. See? Opinions. Just go what you like you to play and what you see
And I hope for a Star Ocean: Second Evolution R on Switch!
Oh snap. I feel like the RPG floodgates are now open! Hopefully by the time Switch 2 comes out ill have free time enough to play. I swear Switch is becoming my jrpg/neogeo/shumup/beatemup paradise.
Switch 2 must be backwards compatible or I am going to look at Nintendo sideways.
I don't just go by Nintendolife @Alucard83. I check out Egmnow, Ign, Gameinformer, and Metacritic. Sadly i don't have the money to buy every game i think looks good just to see if i like it or not. I like to see the opinions of others before i buy a game. Not everybody can afford to blindly gamble $59.99 on everything that looks good to them.
I had the original remake back on the PSP but never got very far. I was very much about just following a story rather than making choices so I always got anxious at points of the story with choices. Also knowing the main character in the second game kinda gave away the "canon outcomes" of some of the characters and some weren't my prefered choices. So basically decided to drop the lot. Plenty of other JRPGs in the sea.
I played and beat this on PSP years ago. It was ok. Just kind of bland.
Please put Star Ocean 2 on the Switch...
Wow! I can remember these games been ace, I'm really interested in this.
@abbyhitter The first time in the west (I'm guessing, by the English Tweer). The original was on the Super Famicom, and there was a Japanese-exclusive GBC sidegame (which got remade for Japanese cellphones, I think).
Yes this is awesome news indeed. This a game that must be play by everyone. I got this game alongside its remake sequel on PSP and love it, glad that Square Enix is finally bringing them to Switch. Would be awesome to play these remakes on the big screen for the first time. I hope Second Evolution also will be coming too, those were exclusives only to PSP physically and were never available at Sony digital shop so you can't play them on PSVita and PSP Go no matter what. Both needs to be on Switch too as both games cover the entire world, missing one will make it incomplete.
@Kalmaro I’m am a little, too
@Krull grandia is on Switch?
@abbyhitter The Star Ocean series started on the Super Famicom, after that the series just got stuck on PlayStation. The only other Star Ocean game on Nintendo is the Game Boy Color game, Star Ocean: Blue Sphere which is still only in Japanese.
@FarkyValentine They were all announced for Switch and PS4, not released yet though.
Hopefully Second Evolution follows sooner rather than later.
Would be shocked if this is released outside of Japan.
@Krull would love to see some modern releases of Lunar didn't care much for the DS game.
I’m in. Can’t wait for this.
@kobashi100 we’ll be shocked. The article points out it’s been announced for worldwide release.
So many awesome RPG's coming to the Switch and i bet within the coming weeks we'll be getting more awesome news. Never had the chance to play the Star Ocean when i had my PSP so with this one, it's time to get it.. hell yeah
Pleaaaase Second Story/Evolution!!
Need this and Second Story. Thanks.
@DarkLloyd Uh, when? No SO game has been released in the US on a Nintendo console
@retro_player_22 doesn't really count as we never had it over here
I certainly hoped they'd do this & 2nd Evolution for Switch....
First Departure is a great game! I love Star Ocean and am over the moon (hehehe) about this one coming to Switch! Maybe if this sells decently, they'll bring over Second Evolution...?
@mikegamer Yeah cause to us part two is the first one right?
This announcement might make me forgive them for how bad Star Ocean:Integrity & Faithlessness was.
....MIGHT.
After the disappointing plot twist in Star Ocean: Till the End of Time that, at least for me, ruined the entire series since they're all connected, I stopped playing any Star Ocean game. Going to pass on this.
As a Star Ocean fan, this is the best news I’ve heard all day!
That trailer theme song! It's like I'm watching original Naruto again, with fansubs!
Watched the trailer and let’s just say they basically already have a sale from me. Physical release please - that will cement the deal!
@BacklogBlues I used to tell these people, if $60 means so little to you, how about YOU buy me the game?
For some reason they never responded to that.
@retro_player_22 The Second Story, yeah
Looking forward to this. Liking that squeenix are giving some support to their other franchises, though I wish the releases would be speedier
This series is filled with unrealized potential that I wish they capitalize on!
@posedge
I whole heartily agree on that bad twist. Although they were trying to retcon that by saying that its actually another universe instead of what it is (I don't want to say because of spoilers) but I'm not sure what came of that.
speaking of RPG remakes - what happened to those Grandia remasters that were supposed to come out for the switch last year?
The Steam version of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time 4K Re master was 19.99.
If this is priced about the same, I guess it would make sense. Either way, grinding away at a JRPG I know how it ends seems like a massive waste of time for me.
I still have this for PSP but will probably buy it again for the Switch.
Okay game. Still those who love JPRG should be interested.
@Fazermint @abbyhitter there is a fan translation here:
https://patches.superfamicom.org/star-ocean-english/
Star Ocean 2 is the best of them imo. Though I played a bit of the PSP one and I was bummed that the Voice Actors changed in it (not quite the same as I remember it), and the music may've been remixed as well. But, it may be due to a copyright issue so it's understandable albeit unfortunate. SO2 is among my top JRPG's, SO1 was not as good from what I tried. It coming to Switch gives me hope for SO2 though
I wonder if it will be an upscaled psp game (similar to MH4GU on Switch), or if it was made for the ground up for Switch and Ps4. I'm also curious what these new features might be.
Unpopular Opinion: Star Ocean Last Hope, is my favorite in the series. You're basically an anime Shepard, being captain of an awesome ship. I liked the chars in that a lot too.
Wow ! This looks great! Got so much to play already but this looks like my cup of tea 🍵
@abbyhitter The franchise started on Super Famicom and there was another game on GBC but neither of them got localized
Good thing the franchise is finally returning to Nintendo and it's getting localized, also just to make things clear this is a remaster of the remake released for the PSP
I preordered God Eater 3 yesterday for my D3 P-E-T (I custom made my Nintendo Switch) and then I saw this news in a group on FaceBook. I thought it was going to Phantasy Star Online because I read a few comments in the post from other users. Is this going to be Phantasy Star Online? Because I have God Eater 3 preordered and now I am worried.
A remake/remaster of a remake of one of the best (but probably most underrated) SNES RPG's? Looks promising!
Hopefully that means they are also bringing The Last Hope and Integrity & Faithlessness to Switch if it sells enough.
YES! (I hope).
I'll pre-order this like that - snaps fingers
...."IF" it's getting a physical release.
I'll hope for the best, but expect the worse.
If they're bringing First Departure, then Second Evolution will likely be next.
