A US study investigating the reputation of major companies has ranked Nintendo in ninth place, putting the Japanese gaming giant just ahead of The LEGO Group.
The study, carried out by Reputation Institute, reportedly assessed the reputation of more than 2,200 companies in the US, undertaking over 167,000 individual ratings between January and February this year. Netflix is chilling at number one after jumping 23 spots from last year, a feat that Reputation Institute Chief Reputation Officer, Stephen Hahn-Griffiths, describes as "unprecedented".
Here's a look at the top ten companies in the 2019 U.S. RepTrak 100:
1. Netflix
2. Hershey
3. Whirlpool
4. Rolex
5. McCormick & Company
6. Barnes & Noble
7. Hasbro
8. Costco Wholesale
9. Nintendo
10. The LEGO Group
In last year's study, Nintendo reached 12th place; the year before, in 2017, it was down in 56th spot. Other major names like Google, Amazon and Facebook have dropped down the rankings significantly.

'Reputable' in what sense?
What makes the likes of Hasbro more reputable than, say, Apple? Without knowing at least a bit about the methodology employed this information is pretty much meaningless.
Netflix? Really?
Netflix is awful, they don't assist you good enough, you have to call to the USA to get costumer service.
Rolex? Who even buys watches anymore?
Also, who is McCormick & Company?
@Chayshirin exactly.
Thank you again, NL, for pasting news without the smallest hint of context or a more in-depth look.
I know the same amount of information about this topic that I knew bofore clicking on the link.
@Chayshirin I dunno, but Apple is probably a terrible choice to try and compare with. They would not even come close to topping a list of what I'd consider reputable companies, considering they're known to drastically inflate their prices, have stopped innovating and instead moved to copying the competition, and sued other smartphone developers for having phones with the same shape as theirs (a rounded rectangle, those monsters!). Sure, Nintendo has sued over petty things in the past as well, but I'd argue never over anything that petty, and certainly never got over a billion dollar payout over those petty suits.
@Chayshirin
"To determine the list, RI surveyed more than 230,000 individuals in 15 countries from January to February 2019. Companies considered typically have revenue in excess of $50 billion, a presence in all surveyed countries and brand familiarity with at least 40% of the general population."

@clvr They included the link to the study on businesswire, I think that's all that's needed on a gaming website. The business-focused websites include more in-depth information, which is correct I think.
@Edu23XWiiU Look back up at the region this list is for.
@Edu23XWiiU This study only measured their reputation in the United States. It'd be nice if they did measure world-wide reputation, but they didn't.
What an odd list: Whirlpool? McCormick? Costco but no Apple or Disney? Anyways...good for Nintendo. Always love to see them get good publicity. They are one of the few companies I don’t mind paying a premium for their products.
Hershey's Chocolate is pretty awful tbf.
@thiswaynow thank you for the links. I thoroughly read the first one and it seems different to what we have here(it is global). According to your source:
The World's Most Reputable Companies 2019
1 Rolex --
2 Lego --
3 The Walt Disney Company
4 Adidas
5 Microsoft
6 Sony --
7 Canon
8 Michelin
9 Netflix
10 Bosch
Which is not exactly what this article is reporting. And the part you have helpfully quoted still does not make it clear what 'reputable' means in this context. I think this would be a better news article if that kind of basic information were also provided.
@Mando44646 Positive that McCormick and company is food seasoning and also flavoring for grilling.
Apple not on that list is crazy
@Edu23XWiiU why’d you have to even call their CS?
Reputable…in a good way or a bad way? No context whatsoever.
never heard half of these companies other than, Nintendo, Netflix, Hasbro, Costco, Hershey (unless this isn't the company that makes candy.) and Lego.
Nintendo, Hershey, and the McCormick & Company are the only companies from the 1800s on that top 10 that still exist today.
@Chayshirin With NL being based in Europe, you would think they would have gone with a more global slant with this piece. Also, I think the goal is for us to look at the links to the data provided in the Business Wire article to see what the criteria is for this list
i forgot Whirlpool even existed, never heard of McCormick & Company & i vaguely recall the existence of Costco gas stations and haven't seen one of those in over decade
Whirlpool lol obviously don’t have my washing machine and the customer service is sh*t
@Shadowmoon522 Are you from the states? McCormick is like THE spice brand. There's a few other selections, but that's pretty much it.
Like every shopping aged adult who cooks knows who McCormick is, or at least has one of their spices in their pantry.
@Edu23XWiiU Everytime I had to contact them, they were quick to reply, and for the most part they offer a good and solid service for a decent price.
"Nintendo is making low graphics consoles again, this is why they will go out of business. Nobody wants kiddie games, they arent realistic." - My friend, 2017
Hasbro doesn't deserve to be this high, the quality of their products have been in sharp decline for years
@PBandSmelly I know a lot of people who still talk like that and I hate it every time.
@Mando44646 mc cormic is a spice company like salt and pepper and other stuff like that
Here's the REAL look at the top ten companies in the 2019 U.S. RepTrak 100: excluding Lobbyists payouts
1. The LEGO Group
2. Hershey - whom doesn't like chocolate
3. Nintendo
4. Costco Wholesale
5. Hasbro - has been?
6. Microsoft - runs the world whom can say no to it.
7. Whirlpool - flush that felt good what other trash to flush down
8. Netflix
9. McCormick & Company
10. Rolex - waste of money aka SMART PHONE
Personally, I don't find this super surprising, although I'd happily see Netflix and Nintendo's spots switched. However, Stranger Things is so good that I'll attempt to accept their position somewhat gracefully.
@Palom
We are #6.
@clvr It's a typical NL re-report piece with zero substance.
@Kal_ who's 9 then?
Such is the Power of Nintendo!
@Skegg Guess I'll have to call them and try
Wait what? Freaking rollex? Rollex is over Nintendo?
@Chayshirin rollex... Is on top... Globally?
Why?
What a weird list. Rolex makes a very small line of products for a very very very small ultra luxury market. How are they atop lists for most reputable companies when the overwhelming majority of any population will never personally encounter their company or product?
McCormick is a weird one....sure it's a near monopoly on food seasonings, but it's one of those brands most people don't really think of at all, you just buy McCormick stuff because it's that or store brand.
Whirlpool. They make products designed to break. They even admit they're designed to last no more than 10 years because "that's what consumers want, new colors, and designes and remodels every 8-10 years", with infamous service that always says to just throw away and replace. How are they on this list? Their "high end" Kitchen Aid line (major appliances, not the mixers which are great still) are infamously failure prone. "At least they're better than GE" should be the slogan.
I swear Forbes just makes stuff up these days.
@Shadowmoon522 Where I live there are more Costcos than Walmarts!
I wonder how deep in the bottom is EA this year
@Chayshirin Yes, Forbes are reporting the global results, which have Nintendo at #12. This article is reporting the US subset, as are Businesswire (linked from this article). I'm not sure what your point is there.
The report is carried out by the leading research organisation in the field, using their proprietary RepTrak methodology: https://www.reputationinstitute.com/why-reputation-institute
@thiswaynow dude one thing is to not go in-depth, another is to not even explain what “reputable” in this context means.
Film reviewer here. I can attest that Netflix has gotten worse over the years. I've been a subscriber since 2003/2004.
Netflix has a reputation, but I wouldn't call it great. They've raised their prices by two bucks this year alone and they still have some of the worst rated original movies out there.
@Franz
When I had Netflix they would send me a disc in the mail to install it on my Wii.
Comcast has to be at the bottom.
I'm not surprised Apple isnt among the top ten. Their products are way too pricey compared to the competition. They may have "trendy" products but that doesn't make them a reputable company.
@Supadav03 Apple and Disney have become really controversial if you haven't noticed.
@IceEarthGuard lol, apparently not controversial enough for me to notice...
Just an odd list. Without it being listed as an option, who would just volunteer McCormick as a “most reputable” company? I’m not saying they are or aren’t. Just that they wouldn’t enter my mind in million years. It’s not a company I’d think many would have on their minds.
Cant remember the last time I've been to a Barnes & Noble 🙄
@LUIGITORNADO i'm from PA and i honestly never really bothered remembering what the brands of spices. i don't even know what the brands of any of the spices in my cabinet are
@clvr I agree with post #5 which is 52 posts before mine somewhere up there.
@Mando44646 Was thinking the same, MCCormick and Company sounds like some company from the 70s maybe. Weird.
So from the study: The study by Reputation Institute, a data insights technology company and provider of reputation measurement and management services, assessed the reputation of more than 2,200 companies in the U.S. The precedent-setting undertaking included over 167,000 individual ratings and was conducted in January-February 2019. This means they only talked to around 170K people. So, I'd take this whole list as a nothing burger, lol. Especially since most people on here don't agree or haven't even heard of a few of these. Odd survey.
@Kal_ Install the movie? I've never heard of that. You mean for the Wii to just play the disc as a DVD player would?
I would think there would be copyright issues if some sort of installation was involved. Because what would stop the renter from taking that same disc and installing the same movie on, say, another Wii? Weird!
'Reputation' is not the same as 'fame'. It's a good thing that people think of Nintendo this way in the US.
Whirlpool is a horrible company lately. Netflix keeps raising prices and their library feels like its shrinking in favor of subpar original content. I assume Rolex is up here due to Hip Hop's love for their watches. Hasbro ruins everything they touch from Takara Tomy. This list is just weird. Nintendo is deserving though.
@Chayshirin <-- What he said.
Hershey... Really? They make the worst chocolate ever. Not sure why they are as big as they are because it is chalky and bland. I guess the quality of goods is not a factor.
How did Hasbro get so high up on the list? Their quality has been dropping like a stone since the mid 2000s and their distribution has always been shoddy.
@Mando44646 They make spices and powdered gravy n stuff. They pretty much taste the same and they're low cost so I guess that's a good sign of reliability.
