Japanese chart figures are now in for 8th - 14th April, revealing that Nintendo Labo VR has managed to enter the charts in second place in its opening week.
The game managed to sell more units that this week's other big Switch release, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, with Famitsu's estimates reporting a total of 26,634 sales. This debut puts it ahead of Nintendo Labo: Vehicle Kit's opening week sales, but still significantly behind the sales experienced by the first two Labo kits.
It was Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain which managed to take the top spot, though, with an estimated 55,573 sales. Labo VR released a day later than both Earth Defense Force and Final Fantasy, potentially causing the VR kit's sales to look a little weaker than they might have done.
Here are the top 10 (first numbers are this week's sales, followed by total sales):
1) [PS4] Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain (D3Publisher) {2019.04.11} - 55.573 / NEW

6) [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo) {2018.12.07} - 11.346 / 3.018.497

10) [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo) {2017.04.28} - 7.834 / 2.254.250
As for hardware, Switch is still sitting at the top of the chart, selling an estimated 54,101 units this week. Here are this week's figures, followed by last week's in brackets:

Can someone give me the rundown on the whole Japanese charts debacle? I haven’t been following developments too closely, but I remember there being talk of the primary source from the data deciding to stop publishing it openly.
I mean, here we are a few weeks later, and we have data, which is great, but I’m just curious what happened.
Those are low sales for a debut, aren't they?
@Maxz Mediacreate was publishing them for free but they aren’t anymore. So now nintendolife is publishing Famitsu’s numbers, which are slightly different since they are both estimates.
@Maxz media create only gives the top 10 game charts now.
Before, it gave top 30 with sales and weekly hardware sales too.
Where is New 3DS LL sales chart ?
Are they discontinued in Japan ?
@Maxz This is obviously from Famitsu, a way better source than Mediacreate who kept on whining about crap than actually being helpful. I'm glad we still see numbers at least for the top 10.
@Maxz Yep, as others have said above, Media Create no longer offers full chart data like it used to. It now only presents the top ten without sales numbers and doesn't do so publicly.
Famitsu also provides a top ten with all info attached but it is considered to be slightly less accurate than Media Create. So the figures you'll see from us from now on will be sourced from Famitsu (which we consider to be estimates rather than fact).
Sales for the Switch console itself are continuing to impress in Japan.
I remember a friend telling me that he would see kids wearing 3DS consoles attached to their belts (some with multiple consoles) when he visited Japan a few years back, such was their popularity.
I’m guessing Switch is having that same affect.
It would be great to see how Switch sales have done overall. I know they were gaining on PS4, but they are still outselling them 4 to 1 right now, so they must be closing in and Switch is still much younger than the PS4.
Nintendo have done incredibly well with Switch in Japan!
Labo launch sales:
Variety Kit >>> Robot Kit > VR Kit >>> Vehicle Kit
Labo' s Golden Week sales will be strong
I suppose in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter all that much but I am sincerely curious:
Did Japan only get 1 or the other Labo VR kit, the $80 or $40 kit? I can't imagine if they got both sales would be combined, but I suppose it's possible.
@Porky For Labo, nope.
@Kienda Looks like Switch is still behind PS4 in Japan when you add in PS4 Pro sales, 7.7m - 7.0m, but ahead of the base PS4.
Globally it's still distant, 92m - 30m, but you probably already knew that. Still probably at least 5 more years to go to see where they end up. Depends on how many models of Switch there are, how cheap they get, and when Switch 2 launches. PS5 being backwards compatible w/ PS4 makes PS4 obsolete, but, if PS5 is expensive a cheaper PS4 may still sell well for a few more years.

3DS still selling.
That kid in the picture is screaming because he's trapped in purgatory.
FFX/X2 launch sales on Switch are <1000 copies below its launch sales on PS4.
In other words, an old port sold like an old port.
Xbox One X proves how much the Japanese care about power. Based on what I’ve heard about the PS5, i’m not sure it will set Japan alight. Neckbeards in the west will no doubt be dribbling from every pore. Switch looks like it will pass the PS4 lifetime there in a couple of weeks.
I wonder if they include the whole kit or/and the starter set in those numbers. Maybe the Starter set would be 0.5, and the expansions as 0.25 each.
Another 3rd party rehash mostly ignored on PS4 is also ignored on Switch 4 years later 🙄
PS4 -FF X | X-2 HD Remaster (2015) – 15,913
And More Japanese went and got a PSVR for their PS4 than LaboVR for their Switch in the first week. And it was 10X the price!
PSVR - ¥39,790 - 55,679
LaboVR - ¥3,780 - 26,634
So far VR on Switch is tied to a DOA cardboard concept in both the UK and JP. I just cant wait to see the support this gets outside of Nintendo
It has a long way to go yet, but Minecraft Nintendo Switch Edition may well hit one million in Japan. It’s on the chart week in week out, just like Nintendo’s own first party titles.
@MJInnocent Minecraft will def hit a million on Switch, it got incredible legs...(It sold over a million on Vita too).
VR kit sales very weak. If it sells under 100k i don't think even Nintendo will continue to support "VR" modes..
@dimi Ben interesting to see if sales spike when the Odyssey and Breath of the Wild VR updates hit. Some positive word of mouth could do wonders, we’re talking about a new experience for games that are multimillion sellers.
Yoshi has tanked in Japan, but was #1 in UK ... I wouldn't be happy with 100k sales, although it's early. Bring on fire emblem!!
Thanks for the info! I didn’t know Famitsu had its finger on the pulse when it came to sales! Glad we’ve still got some numbers to ogle at.
@Maxz they went to another source that is believed to be less accurate but it is close enough to the actual numbers so it is fine
Another dominant week for the switch!
8 out of 10 best selling games and the hardware sold 5 time more than the PS4 and PS4 pro combined
@Agramonte it make sense
Nintendo vr isn’t close to be as good as the PS4 vr
If Nintendo will make some real version headset it will sell amazing
@Tantani yes!... No doubt about it
