With all the hullabaloo and excitement surrounding the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate last week, we wouldn't blame you for forgetting about the release of Katamari Damacy Reroll on Switch. If this applies to you, here's your friendly reminder that it's available as we speak and could well be worth your time.
Launching on the same day as Smash doesn't seem to have done the title any favours, but the excitement for this one was incredibly high among our lovely readers when it was first revealed back in September. If you haven't heard of this one before, you are essentially given control of a highly adhesive ball (the Katamari) and are capable of collecting paper-clips, books, cars, buildings, mountains, and even continents as it grows larger and larger. It's pretty crazy.
The Switch version features remastered graphics and cutscenes as well as new motion controls unique to the console. Using two Joy-Con in either table-top or TV mode, players can move around by simply turning their wrists (you can see this in action in the trailer above). Players will also be able to play in a two-player mode on Switch with one Joy-Con each.
You can snag your own copy now for £15.99 / $29.99 and a free demo is also available directly from the eShop. We're aiming to have a review for you soon.
Are you one of the many who were excited for this one? Did you forget about it, or did you buy it the moment it went on sale last Friday? Let us know below.

I’m guessing at that price there’s no physical version planned? I’d rather have it physically, the same as all my games.
@ottospooky There is, but only in the US as a GameStop exclusive. Which sucks because PlayAsia had to cancel and refund the pre-orders for it!
It's riding high on the Switch eShop, European, which is good.
@SepticLemon thanks! Just checked eBay and copies are going for about £45-50 inc postage from the US. I may have to just bite the bullet and get this one as a download
I tried the demo and thought the controls were hideous. The motion controls don't look that much better thb.
@ottospooky
FYI the Japanese version of this game, Katamari Damacy Encore, is multi-language and region free.
It launches on December 20th though, as opposed to the already launched US physical copy.
Have this on my PS3; still love it to bits. Might have to get the Switch version and I sincerely hope we get the later sequels on this console as well.
Shame there isn’t a Physical version. I may buy this if/when this goes on sale.
I will pick this up if i can find it sealed, i can't stand when gamestop wants to sell already open new copies.🙄 I want to break the seal myself thank you.🤣
@ryancraddock I think it's 19,99€, not 29,99

i tried to try the demo. it's impossible to play.
There's just not enough money right now, unfortunately. I splurged on the Smash special edition, and I still have gift shoppibg to do.
Though, I do want to get it by next month. Thanks to Amazon discontinuing the 20%discount, I'm focusing on niche or on-sale games anyway. So I don't foresee anything taking my attention away, short of Animal crossing and Metroid Prime 4 surprise launching in January.
@SuperCharlie78 The price above is 29.99 USD, not Euros. But yes, I believe it is available for 19.99€ 🙂
I tried the demo and bounced straight off it because I couldn't work out the controls at all.
I got it as soon as it was available on Friday (I'm not into Smash I'm afraid). I've played a fair few of the other games in the series and the controls did take a bit of adjusting to on the Switch. I think the asymmetry of the analogue stick positions and them being much farther apart in handheld mode made it feel a bit weird for the first few levels.
Overall it seems to be a pretty good port, the framerate does dip a few times which is a bit disappointing (I think it only happens in handheld mode) but Katamari fans should be very happy. Hopefully we'll get the sequel too!
I was interested and tried the demo first, but I'm not going to buy it! The controls are terrible!
I'm tempted to order this physically from Japan, although the digital price is pretty good. Are we gonna get a review anytime soon, rather than just a reminder that this is out? I'm curious to know how it handles on Switch before buying. (I know there's a demo available, which I've downloaded but been too busy playing Smash to play)
I'm genuinely confused as to how some folks feel the controls are terrible. It's just two sticks, each one controls as if it's a side of a car. Press up on both to go forward.
One of the few games my wife likes, so I’ll be getting this from her for Christmas. As a download at that price too rather than importing to the uk.
To all of the people having problems with the controls... is this in comparison to other versions? That is... have you played a Katamari game before? Personally, I found that it does take a while to get the hang of, but once you do, you're off rollin' like a Prince! 😆
@ROBLOGNICK
It just takes a bit of procedural memory to learn how to maneuver efficiently in the game. Like learning to ride bicycle.
@HobbitGamer Too many people are probably not giving the controls enough time. If you think of it as the right stick is your right hand and the left your left hand it makes sense.
Y’all are fake gamers for not giving the controls enough of a chance.
How many levels in the full game?
I downloaded the demo immediately. Never in my life have I been so confused as to how to control a game. I eventually asked online for help, but wow what an absolutely awful demo. No tutorial when your control scheme is so unintuitive? Crazy.
@HobbitGamer If you KNOW that's how to control it, it's okay. The problem is instinctively any gamer would assume you move with the left stick and rotate the camera with the right stick. If you approach the controls that way, it feels completely broken and truly unplayable.
The demo never says to push both analogs in tandem to move, so anyone who hasn't played Katamari wouldn't know. I've played thousands of games since the Atari days, and I've never seen a game control like this. So the developers can't just assume newbies will instinctively know.
Dang, I’ll have to get it eventually, but I can’t put Smash down. It’s like I can’t play anything else on Switch but Smash at the moment.
@ROBLOGNICK I also couldn't get round the hideous controls. Ah maybe I'll have to try it on PC
Everyone complaining about the controls you must be poor because the game plays amazingly on a switch Pro Controller. I'll admit that the joycons seem to have a little bit of a lag which I thought was strange but I played it in TV mode not handheld so maybe the game was designed to be in handheld mode with the joycons? I played two whole levels though with the Pro Controller and I think a lot of people just suck at the game. Git g u d! I think a lot of people don't understand the physics in this game either, if you can't move the ball then it's probably too big and too heavy for the prince to push so you have to plan that when you're doing your game movements, like flipping around the ball just to push it the opposite direction it's going and maybe Dash instead of fighting against it. The point is, if you think the controls are bad then you're probably a noob who never played the game before and you're not really considering the sheer weight and inertia of the Katamari. I'll admit that the Collision for the first game was not forgiving and things keep falling off the Katamari versus the second game where you can bump into things and the game doesn't punish you so hard but overall the first game has a better storyline and the challenges are pretty reasonable considering no one's ever played it before. Obviously it's not going to be for everybody, some people are just going to scoff at it because what look like a lot of fun causing Mayhem ended up being a strategy game where you have to earn the right to cause Mayhem by getting big fast before the time Runs Out.
10/10 from me! So happy it made number 1 on Eshop downloads chart.
its funny to me that when this game gets re-released there is an almost identical reaction to the controls as it was when it was released in 2004. This is one of the most underappreciated games ever made....but I fear that because people don't get it right away that it will never get the respect it deserves!!!
@HobbitGamer It’s probably because there isn’t a tutorial in the demo.
Review when? Already picked it up, but it would be nice to see the mostly subjective thoughts of the great reviewers at NL.
@Daftbomb Don’t know about this one, but Wiki says 22 stages in the original.
@sketchturner But... It's really not hard. It is two sticks, and the demo is 4 minutes. So even if a person thinks "hey, the right stick isn't moving the camera, it's doing something else", i'd assume they would then figure out what it does do.
Is it an unconventional control scheme? Yes.
Is it unplayable? No.
I remember there being a Nintendo Minute where it was shown and explained, a month back or so.
Is there a 'controls' thing when you pause the demo? I forgot, since I got the full game.
Not sure what all the hubbub is about the controls. My 6 year old picked up the demo and destroyed the first level without any help from me. She has played all kinds of games on switch and Xbox so she knows what the standard controls are like. I have played katamari from the beginning and the controls are identical to the way they have always been. For those reading these comments but have not played the game. Give it a chance. I think you will find once you get it down that the game is the right level of fun and challenge.
I just picked up the physical edition at GS. Thanks for those that posted that they had the physical. I am trying to do all physical releases and I really wanted this one.
NL fix your stupid link - it's sold at GS in the US for 30 bucks, your Amazon link takes me to private listings selling it for 60 bucks - cuz they hope ppl get confused. C'mon!
It's pretty good. Probably not quite as good as that PS3/Xbox360 version we all know and love. At 29 bucks it's a worthwhile grab though either way. Controls feel a little wonky to me but maybe that's how it's always been. Also, some of its whimsy/charm seems more forced or intentional in this version.
This is the game whose author said that Super Mario Odyssey was not fun? Meh, I'll pass. The gameplay doesn't look fun in the slightest.
I was concerned about the controls myself, because I remember having a harder time with the Xbox 360 game due to the sticks not being lined up like a Playstation controller. I was also worried they'd go all in on a Joy-Con motion setup that might not feel right either.
Now that I've tried the first level with a Pro controller I can say it works pretty well. It doesn't really feel off balance or whatever had bothered me about the Xbox one. I also found the PSP game a bit annoying as well, but this one lines up pretty well with the Playstation ones.
Yes, it takes some getting used to, and there are areas where you'll get hung on corners or struggle to regain momentum, but it's all part of the gameplay. I'd like to try a version where all steering is done with the L stick, but that's never been the way it works.
I hope that doesn't put so many people off that it doesn't do well. I was happy to see it finally come to a Nintendo system, and especially a popular one.
A very fun game, im having my fun with it.
@HobbitGamer There isn’t, that’s the only flaw of the demo. Haven’t been able to play Katamari yet because of school, but I do know that they explain the controls well in the full game’s tutorial.
I want to buy, but want this physical. If I don't get to a Gamestop soon I'll be ordering from Amazon.jp, which is actually cheaper than GS if you have Prime. Downside is it won't be out until the 20th, but I have enough games in the backlog anyway.
@Jimsbo Simple Control Mode lets you use one stick.
(Been playing this more than smash actually)
I absolutely adored this on PS2 but even in the height of my katamari honeymoon I had to acknowledge that the controls can be rage-inducing.
If you guys don't like the demo then imagine trying to roll up a narrow path on a steep hill, avoiding bears.
But it's the most charming, stylish, Japanesiest Japanese game of all time and there's nothing else like it. We have Octodad and Goat Simulator now - katamari is a piece of cake!
Everyone is complaining about the controls, but they are basically the same as a zero turn radius mower.
Day one buy, enjoy it so much!
@Auenegheps You just suck at learning challenging controls. That, if you get through the learning curve, they are actually pretty awesome. Stop being impatient.
