US software developer Niantic launched Ingress Prime in November - a rework of its original augmented reality mobile game. At the time, the company said it was hoping the newer features in the game could eventually carry across to Pokémon GO. One feature in particular was the new prestige system, allowing players to roll back to level one and gain unique benefits.
Since its chat with Eurogamer, Niantic has been interviewed by German press about the future plans for GO. Once again, the question about raising the cap beyond level 40 was raised. On this occasion, the developer said it currently had no plans to adjust or raise the current level cap, despite the fact more and more players were reaching this in-game milestone by the day. Hopefully a system similar to the prestige one is added at some point in the near future.
Would you like to see the level cap in GO raised? Are you still playing this game? Have you revisited it since the release of Let’s Go? Tell us below.

I’ll cross that bridge if I ever get to it.
I think I'll be stuck in the 20s forever...I'll reach level 40 in a few years
Well, that's going to be interesting.
Well the players my area are going to be upset. I know several of them that are pushing fifty million experience already under the assumption that the game has to grant you additional levels when they finally unlock them.
I’ll be 32 forever (just like real life)
I mean I am not quite there yet, but why do people want to? Yeah you get some rewards upon leveling, but nothing that great.
I'm almost at 34 and don't even want to imagine how long it will take to get to 40. This has taken long enough as it is. How were people at 40 in the first year??
I think @Spoony_Tech all they did was eat, sleep and farm Pidgey's... Slowly working through the 5 million required to level up from 39. It's literally been months and only just passed 2 million...
Well that's just questionable design, because the game awards you four lucky eggs (among other useful items) when you reach level 40.
You can continue to earn trainer XP past level 40, but it doesn't do anything. I'm actually at 45 million XP right now, far beyond the 20 million requirement for level 40.
I guess raising the trainer cap would also mean a higher CP cap for Pokémon, but that would have to refactor power up costs and everything. It's something they likely never considered from day one. Doing it now would complicate the upcoming PvP feature for sure.
It's just annoying that there's no sort of prestige system for level 40 players, who could maybe repeat the level 40 levelling process for repeat rewards, earn other rewards based on post-40 XP milestones, etc. Lucky Eggs are frequently a part of in-game sales boxes and serve no purpose to such players, discouraging them from buying a box where an item has no value.
I’ve stopped trying to level. After level 35, there isn’t really much point to it, and I’m currently level 38. There isn’t anything that will unlock for me at level 40. I can fully power up Pokémon and I’ve been able to do that since level 36 or 37. At this point I will probably reach level 40 in less than 6 months and I see no reason at all to rush.
However I do think adding more levels would scare away new players. Getting to level 30 (the most important level milestone in the game at the moment) is already quite time demanding and even though they have added more ways to get experience than ever before, I still believe it would seem unachievable for newcomers if they had to reach level 50 at some point.
So it takes forever to get to level 40 in Pokémon Go, but when we got amiibo for SSB4 on Wii U my kids had them maxed out at level 50 in about 3 hours.
Somewhere in between those two extremes is a leveling system that makes sense.
Would be nice if it was in SSBU but I'm not holding my breath.
@Spoony_Tech It's really not that hard anymore. You get 50k and 100k experience for reaching Ultra and Best Friends status respectively which you can double with Lucky Eggs. Sure, these milestones take 1 and 3 months respectively but that's still a whole lot.
Reached it myself after almost a year today and I don't play more than a few hours daily at most, events aside when possible.
I have like 40 lucky eggs and stuff. But I don't have the patience to do evolution grinding. I'm currently at level 28
Currently level 30, and I have been playing off and on since the beginning. Level 40 feels so far away.
With the new friend bonuses, anyone who wants to can go from level 30 to 40 in just a few months. Every Ultra friend gives 50k XP (or 100k with a lucky egg) and every Best friend gives 100k XP (200k with an egg). So 10 ultra friends or 5 best friends = 1 million XP. 40 is the new 30.
@TommyTendo no need to mass evolve any more. Raids used to be the best way to level up, but now it's friends. Get a bunch of people lined up to hit the next friendship level (great, ultra, or best), pop a lucky egg and open some gifts.
pitty there is no level 9999. I'm like make it possible for hardcore players and make it worth to level up. Being level 30 after 1 or 2 years doesn't sound that good to me. I would be like... wow that's low level. lol. Seems this more action game with rpg elements. When a game as a low level cap to me it's a soft rpg game. Well as long you people like it keep playing it
@MisterKorman I mean, yeah they are something, but the reward to payoff is horribly skewed. All those things can be more easily obtained with coins earned from defending gyms. But it takes even the most dedicated players months and months of heavy play to reach 40.
@MisterKorman I understand that. It would be nice if there was some point to exp after reaching level 40. Though I would like to think maybe you could get extra coins. Maybe 10 coins for ever 100k after level 40? Mostly I just want more ways to earn coins beyond the 50 per day cap...
At 145 Million xp I am upset by this info. I am losing my zest for the game. And still haven't been able to connect my phone up to get a Meltan box. Do with no bar set to exceed. I may just fade away. But the raid club I run has up to 80 people on a given Saturday with no one who wants to take over. Big loss.
I love this game, but I am almost to 40 and without being able to see myself gaining xp and leveling up, what’s the point. I also hate that once 40 hits I will have to spent coins to get more incubators and lucky eggs. While this may help them make money, I think they will ultimately lose many people as they get tired of not seeing any progress. I also do not get what they have to lose by adding one, they could just make it harder to level up and just give similar rewards to before and everyone would be happy.
