Team Sonic Racing may have missed 2018, but we've still got hope that it will live up to expectations when it does eventually arrive, purely because we loved Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, and still do.
Sega has now released a special video featuring series producer Takashi Iizuka discussing the game at this year's Tokyo Game Show. You can watch it up there.
In the video, Iizuka explains the inspiration for the game’s unique team-based racing system, and shows off courses such as Wisp Circuit, Ice Mountain and Market Street. He also spends a little time talking about the character class types - Speed, Technique and Power - which allow you to create a balanced team, apparently.
Have a watch and let us know if you're still excited about this upcoming Switch speed-fest by posting a comment below. We're still crossing our fingers and toes that it will shape up, even if what we played at EGX was pretty depressing.

I'm a pretty big sonic fan, so they can take their time. Just make the game good. I haven't played a Sonic Racing game scince the first All Stars on DS
Yeah Sega all stars would get a purchase from me. Sonic and his cadre aren't enough imho. How can you release what is basically a love letter to Sega's fans, with variety and solid mechanics, and follow it up with a sleeved down Sonic Riders clone?
I don't get it, and I won't be getting it.
Remember the days when Sega was known for more than just Sonic? Nah, me neither.
@aznable Very sleeved down at that, Sonic Riders still lets you play as other SEGA characters.
@aznable But TSR plays nothing like Riders.
@Orpheus79V but but but I think both riders AND tsr are garbage compared to all stars racing (especially transformed) so whatever.

@aznable It was sarcasm. I was talking about lately. Of course they were awesome in the past.
@brandonbwii They publish Yakuza so y'know they've only published Yakuza 0, one of the greatest games this generation and also including OutRun and Space Harrier as in-game arcade machines. Sega aren't as good as they were, but they still provide arguably better fan service than Nintendo.
It looks far too similar to Mario Kart. I guess why innovate when you can imitate. Personally, I’m sick of ‘random’ power-ups - Diddy Kong Racing perfected power-ups over twenty years ago!
@Bondi_Surfer I wouldn't write it off as nothing more than a Mario Kart clone. I had Sonic All Star Racing and Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U and they played quite a bit different. Sonic was, of course, a lot faster. And while it had weapons similar to Mario Kart, they have far less impact. Getting hit with a missile or blow fish will probably knock you back one position, not five. Just like the all star power up (kind of like Bullet Bill) usually only pushes you ahead one or two positions. So if this is similar to the last one, it really emphasizes racing skill over Mario Karts luck and cheap attack weapons. Also, and I don't know if the upcoming game will have it, but All Stars Racing had a campaign mode where each track had to be unlocked by passing a specific challenge, not always just coming in first. It really added another level of challenge. I definitely found it worth it to own both games.
@TheFox Thanks for the heads-up - I’ll definitely keep my eye on it out now
"When battling friends, there would always be one that's excited and the others are unhappy"..lol...Welcome to Mario Kart!
@nessisonett What do you mean by fan service? If you mean IP then Nintendo leverages theirs to a fault. What makes Sega better at it?
@MysticGengar Check this out! https://www.gamestop.com/toys/sonic-the-hedgehog-crash-course-board-game-only-at-gamestop/159614
I really can't wait for this game, tbh. I'm already looking forward to playing as Blaze and Rouge so much.
@TheFox You are absolutely right. Recent Mario Kart games are based on luck, cheap weapons and semi-automatic gameplay. Both Sonic Racing games are based on driving skills and the items are not so powerful. They have much more in common with Diddy Kong Racing than with Mario Kart. Team Sonic Racing will be another solid racer if the developer makes the most of this delay.
@brandonbwii Nintendo's not exactly great at using its retro catalogue to great effect. Before the Minis, they basically gave you a bare-bones version of individual games through the Virtual Console. Sega love to fill their retro collections with extras and there's a certain level of polish that Nintendo should learn from. Even simple things such as OutRun on the Sega 3D Classics series having a moving arcade cabinet bring so much joy to retro fans.
@MrGlubGlub
I can't tell if this is a joke or not
@MysticGengar It's real and awesome: https://idwgames.com/shop/sonic-the-hedgehog-crash-course/
@Bondi_Surfer Mario Kart 8 is pretty underwhelming to me. It is very very luck based.
