Campo Santo's award-winning 2016 title Firewatch was revealed for the Nintendo Switch earlier this year in April and has since gone missing. When it was originally announced, it was said to be arriving at some point in the near future. With 2018 nearly over, it's left us wondering if it will still show up before the end of the year.
According to Campo Santo co-founder Jake Rodkin, the game is "very close" to release. Rodkin delivered this information in a reply to a Twitter user asking about the availability of the game on the Switch. This followed his original tweet about how "ridiculously nice" the Switch version of the game looked. Here's the initial tweet and latest screenshots:

If you haven't heard about Firewatch before, it's a traditional 'walking simulator' mixed with a linear narrative and set in Shoshone National Forest located in the US. You take on the role of Henry who is a fire lookout. Being in complete isolation, the only person Henry has contact with is his supervisor Delilah via radio communication. Take a look at the game's original 2016 trailer below:

I will buy this again when it comes to the Switch.
I’m really looking forward to this!
Love this game,I'll buy it again if the performance is decent.
no interest in this game whatsoever i prefer to buy games i will play again this seems to have very little replayability
I remember learning about this game way back in April at Pax East.
I forgot about it since then(haha), but I'll still buy it whenever it comes out. (:
This made me remember the drama against PewDiePie the creator fabricated. It really showed how lacking he was in human integrity.
@smithpa01
I think it kind of depends on what you consider replayability.
Some people like watching a good film many times. I could watch The Incredibles or What We Do in the Shadows a hundred times.
However, I have never played any JRPG more than once, regardless of how many endings or customization options it has. They're too long and grindy for me, and I feel exhausted every time I finish one.
This game isn't very long, but offers some reasonably interesting choices, beautiful visuals, and well executed voice work and drama. So I could see why some would go through it multiple times just to be there again, and maybe try out answering a few promts differently.
Will probably buy this. Looks quite good. Will break up all the turn based strategy games I’m playing.
This game is awesome!! Go go players go yo play it! Seriously I liked this game when I played it two years ago.
Looking forward to this one!
This game was so good
Make sure that buyers get a physical option as well.
That will be added to watch list
I'll pass again.
Not interested in the genre in the slightest plus, the dev is a massive goomba.
I played it on PC and liked it enough to play it only once. I also think that Switch releases of previous popular titles are too expensive comparatively to the other platforms.
@Einherjar
Sean Vanaman is a pretentious SJW. But he's just one guy and his studio has proven to be capable, so his spat with Piediepie won't influence my future purchase decisions. I'm interested to see what Campo Santo's next game "In the Valley of Gods" is gonna be like.
It is a very good game. However, if u have played it before and finished it, then there is really lil to no reason to play it again as it is just a walking simulator with a decent story. But for ppl who haven't experienced it before, this might be a good opportunity.
@JamesJose7
Hopefully he learned his lesson from that stunt.
@Einherjar
Curious here, what genre would you assume this game to be?
Firewatch is the best Story based on Mystery. Finding Clue. That was Amazing.
Will definitely get this. I remember seeing it on the Xbox store but glad I waited. I prefer Switch over everything else 😛
@Pod "Walking Simulator", and not even in a derogatory sense.
Stuck between Point&Click Adventures and Visual novels.
They're similar to P&C Adventures, they just have too much unnecessary busywork added on to them for my taste.
What boils down to a couple of clicks in a P&C Adventure translates to walking and actively looking around the scenery in walking sims.
For some, that might enhance immersion, for me, it's just wasted time.
This is the same developer that gave PewDiePie permission to make a let’s play of their game, and then “revoked” this permission and gave him a copyright strike on all of his videos because he made an offensive joke months later. I’ll pass.
Ehh, it's an alright game. The way it ends though, meh.
@Pod i hope so too.
@Callmegil The ending really disappointed me, I already pseudo-played it watching it on YouTube since it's a walking simulator. The journey was pretty fun and misterious but the end dropped everything that was built across the entire game.
@Einherjar
Well, I think you might be in luck with this game. It's much closer to a traditional PnC than something like Gone Home or Dear Esther.
And much closer to neatly ordered PnCs like Goblins 3, Curse of Monkey Island, or even more modern ones like Machinarium or Samorost, than to the more open world and more messy PnCs like The Neverhood or Simon the Sorcerer, that let you get completely lost.
The busywork is doled out in very neat little portions, with game segments that have beginnings and endings. And you have pretty straigt-forward objectives, with some rather obvious points of interest that never become mandatory in that old-timey pixel hunt sense.
That's the part I feel they get right.
But, of course, none of this will fix the story (or the developer's attitude problem) if you don't like those.
@Vriess Reminds me a bit of Fez. Love that game, and I also loved Firewatch. Sometimes it's best to separate the game from its developers and not think about it too much.
Is there a physical copy coming?
Im a little bit interested in this. But the SJW-part of the developer makes me skipping this one, buying something else
@Pod The devs are a big issue to be completely honest.
Heck, i even passed on Yooka Laylee despite being a huge platformer/collect-a-thon fan.
I just won't support devs getting involved in stupid political banter.
But yeah, in general, i have nothing against these games.
If people enjoy them, more power to them!
As for me, i stick with the occasional P&CA.
I'm an arcade kid, so gampleay > pretty much everything else
Can someone please explain to me what a 'walking simulator' is? It sounds awfully dull, yet this game seems popular.
@GrailUK You can get to the end of the game by walking forward. There are decisions in Firewatch and there are dialogs you can do differently but you'll still make it towards the end. I like the story, but I've been spoiled by watching Markiplier's play through. So I'm passing.
Im curious, might get it when its on sale
@masterLEON Ah thanks mate. So it's more a choose your own adventure than a game then. Hmm...I might try it just out of curiosity.
I was really keen for this game on PC but never ended up getting it, probably a first day buy for me on Switch.
I have been wanting to get this. I will wait on the switch version now.
@mgnoodle The fire-watchlist?
Wow yeah, I remember hearing about this coming to the Switch and being interested in playing it finally. But then it did kinda drop off the face of the Earth since.
I don't mind if it comes out next year or whatever. But I do want to pick it up when it does come to Switch.
I’s Bizarre for me to hear people say “I don’t like people that get involved with politics” when the core incident is someone taking issue with someone saying the “N” word. It’s gross to hear people wave that off as “Eh, it’s politics” or “These damn Social Justice Warriors!” like none of this is worthy of getting upset over and it’s nonsense to take issue with that word’s usage. Pewdipie’s a turd. Anyways... this game was boring to me.
@DEADCELL and why exactly is that a bad thing? Theyre a dev with a public image to defend. I know if i was a dev i wouldnt want my intellectual property associated with someone who makes offensive comments and i certainly wouldnt want that peron to benefit and profit off of my work. See things from the perspective of others and not just from a Pewdiepie fans perspective.
@Scoopz A public image? Pewdiepie has hundreds of game playthroughs on his channel, and this happened months later. Nobody would associate them with his joke. What they did was grandstanding. Instead of just asking him to take the videos down, they flagged him for copyright infringement, despite explicitly giving him permission to stream the game, which could have led to his channel being deleted and costing him hundreds of thousands of dollars (as a conservative estimate). They are complete scumbags with no morals or ethics.
For some reason I read "Firmware is 'Very Close' to release on Switch". We can never have enough Stability in our Nintendo consoles.
@Einherjar
I get it.
Personally I don't see the devs really affecting my game, but then, I have other hang-ups like DLC policies, where some might say that I can just 'not buy it', which is true, but it really riles me up.
Enough that I didn't buy New Super Mario Bros. U because of the Luigi DLC, and never bought Smash 4 either.
The game is great! Loved playing it the first year I got my PS4. The audio tracks in the second play through is like watching a movie with director commentary— i loved it too, but I didn’t finish it since I ended up buying more games by then
@Octane Yes, Fez! Fez is another classic that should find it's way to Switch! I'm glad Firewatch is coming soon. I've never played more than 10 or 20 minutes of it, but liked it. I plan to play through it on Switch. One thing I think about this game is what a great advertisement it is for national forests, parks, and hiking. I guess I kinda feel that way about Breath of the Wild, which is among other things one of the best walking simulators ever : )
@GrailUK I think someone invented "walking simulator" as an insult for games they didn't like that have walking and no combat, and maybe even don't let you run. The Witness could be a walking simulator puzzle game. Gone Home could be a walking simulator story game. I think they usually are story based, or creative and artistic oriented with minimal story. Old Man's Journey could be considered a sort of 2d walking simulator. Infernium could be a horror walking (and running) puzzle game walking simulator. Shape of the World is probably one of the best examples of a walking simulator on the Switch. Hope the examples help.
Is this game as boring as it looks?
All I recall about this is the devs filed a false DMCA against that pewdiepie guy.
@Pod Generally, i try to separate artist and art as best as i can.
I draw this particular line only when politics are involved.
You're either a game dev, or a politician, and i pay enough for the latter already
But seriously, recent politics divide enough as is, i don't need to support this stuff in a hobby, where it simply doesn't belong.
As for DLC: I'm not quite as sensitive as you are regarding it, but i also "boycotted" games that went overboard with it in the past.
With Nintendo titles, i got enough bang for my bucks.
Look at Mario Kart 8 back then. The combined DLC doubled the games content for less than half it's retail price.
Imo, a completely fair deal for post-launch DLC.
But i draw a hard line when it comes to pre-order DLC.
That stuff is just villainous. "Either you pay us before we deliver, or you'll never get the full game".
That's the moment i'm out.
This has been on my gaming PC Steam watch list for a while. I will definitely buy it on Switch instead now even if it costs a bit more.
I am waiting to play this game on Switch for a year now! Cannot wait.
I've been keeping a close eye out for this release since they announced it. It's always been "right around the corner." I think it legitimately is now. It was playable at PAX West. The other "2018" Switch release I'm still waiting to see a release date for is Super Meat Boy Forever. Tough for nindies getting over that finishing line. Never played Firewatch but want to, Switch is the perfect platform for it, will be a day one for me. SMBF I'm waiting to see how it turns out. I never did partake in SMB, hoping SMBF is an improvement.
@Einherjar
I guess with the politics, I just pity the artists that don't allow their works to speak for themselves. It's not like Firewatch DOESN'T express most of the views the developer holds already. And does it in a more conversational and refined way than causing a scene online does.
The following is about DLC and ended up a little long. Bear with me.
With Mario Kart, I'm not as such upset about the amount of stuff you got for your money, with the DLC, but that a mandatory update advertised it from multiple menu screens. Taunting you with the fact that you hadn't yet purchased it. Removing the update caused the game no not even allow offline play, as the system now knew the update was available.
I wrote Nintendo a stern but polite email about this, which they promptly ignored, as I would expect.
The pre-order stuff drives me up the wall as well. And even this recent announcement of fighter packs and a full pass for them all for Smash Bros. is rubbing me the wrong way.
Suddenly, as the consumer, my job is not just to consider if I want to buy the game or not, which used to be easy with Nintendo, because big first party games usually don't drop in price. Now it's whether I want to buy it early, to get the Pirahna Plant, and whether I want to trust Sakurai & Co. to add five cool fighters hat I worth my money, or I want to check them out individually, or wait to everything is out, and THEN get it.
They're making it such a hassle. On purpose even. To get our mindshare. And make us consider and/or believe that at least one of the options has to be right for us. And having spend all that time thinking about the additional purchases, the initial purchase will unconciously have become a logical choice. Through mental sunk costs, I'm more likely to have already bought the game.
It's an insidious, manipulative practice, the way I see it, and I think DLC announced pre-launch ought to be included with the initial price of the game. If they want to charge extra for it, they can call me when it's done sometime next year, and say "Look what we've got for you now!".
...probably gonna buy it anyway. Grr.
Shut up and take my money! Instant buy for me. No better walking simulator out there to play while walking in the woods...
@Pod
Political banter: Ayup, exactly that. Let your art speak for itself.
You're a freakin business. Don't alienate customers before they buy your game. Maybe your ideals that get reflected through your art may even change some minds... Oh well, i'm a hopeless romantic these days...i still believe that talking with each other, no matter the difference is actually the key...
DLC:
I wholeheartedly agree about pretty much everything you said.
Again, with a normal "Here is stuff we made after the game, here is a one stop pass to get it all for a bit cheaper" situation, im perfectly fine with it.
But it starts and ends there.
Smash didn't rub me the wrong way because, well, it's smash, i want it all anyways. Guilty as charged. I'm just happy that nothing they announced is in any way a times exclusive.
It's all available individually later on, Piranha Plant is just a weird incentive to get cash in during development.
Understandably, but i also see people not liking it, such as yourself.
One of my all time favorite examples of DLC gone horribly wrong is "Kingdoms of Amalur".
Not only did it have several flavors of Pre Order DLC that have never been released in their own, it also featured several other DLC's tied to a plethora of things:
Have an account here, be logged in there, have a demo save of this and so on.
And lo and behold: All of this is lost now.
Quests are missing, items are unoptainbable and (especially for me, a completionist) it ruins any attempt at a "perfect save/perfect character", as one of the pre order DLC items offered the last, missing skill points you would need to max out everything the skill tree has to offer.
@Einherjar
We can be dreamers and romantics, it's okay.
And I used the word insidious, but that whole mess you got wrapped up inside sounds downright evil!
