Nintendo of America has tweeted a video promoting the Wendy's College Tailgate Tour where Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is played at multiple football events around the US. This seemingly normal clip has sent the Smash community into overdrive due to a mysterious item which can be seen in the image (on the far right) and video clip below:
Whatever it is, it's been linked to the original Golden Sun games - with many fans over on the Smash Reddit of the belief it's the Growth Psyenergy icon. Of course, Golden Sun's lead character Isaac was also part of yesterday's supposed character leak.
What do you make of this? Tell us below.

What do I think? I think that Rainbow Cruise is looking darn good in movement. Even if we only got that small clip.
It's heavily speculated that it might possibly be the growth psynergy icon from Golden Sun. It looks eerily similar to it too.
I've never seen such widepsread news coverage about a tiny leaf sprout in a ball.
I want this to be true, but it could be anything honestly, especially when you factor in Pikmin
@TJWorks or chairs, we remember Sakurai, we remember.
@bluemujika I don't really remember anything from Pikmin looking like that.
The constant hype for this game is doing my head in. That's all. Carry on.
It looks like the plant thing from Super Paper Mario on the Wii
So... people get crazy over a tiny item like this?
What if there are more than one new item in the game? Will it wreck the internet?
@Klunk23: Wow, yeah, Rainbow Cruise looks gorgeous remade! Stages I missed, for a long time are that, Brinstar Depths, Big Blue, Fourside, Peach's Castle (Melee), & Hanenbow. Nice that they are back.
Oh please, be true!
@Rhaoulos I... I don't understand it either...
@Rhaoulos Inclusions like this that reference a long time, much-desired character is what causes the excitement.
If Issac does become a fighter I would want his Dark Sun look as one of his color pallets.
@Torakaka or maybe we could get a new golden sun game instead...
@Rhaoulos
Any kind of representation of a forgotten franchise in Smash will make people excited. But most importantly, this could mean the inclusion of a character that many fans have been waiting.
OMG OMG OMG , is THAT !!! I'm so hyped HYPE HYPE HYPE.
i have no idea what i'm lookin at.
what about poke, why smash get so much attention
Nobody mentioned the fact that 8 player is confirmed to be back either?
Isaac CONFIRMED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Liam_Doolan @NintendoLife
Please please PLEASE be careful with spoilers! This is tagged as "news", I did not expect to see a "rumour / leak" in it! I purposely did not click the Smash leak "rumour" to save myself from leaks, thus now you spoiled the Isaac leak for me I have said it before and will said it now - "news" is not the same tag as "rumour", please protect those of us from rumors and leaks who want to do so. Without the Isaac part, this would be an ok "news" piece...
Only yesterday I was happy to see that the Smash leak was just that, a "rumour", and that nothing was spoiled in the title / tagline / picture - I applaud you for that! Please try to keep it that way
This is what we found over at r/Nintendoswitch concerning the leaks.
-OBVIOUS SPOILERS-
https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/9rdkqu/a_summary_of_everything_from_the_smash_leaks/
That is indeed from Golden Sun, which does make it more likely that a certain character will be in this game.
I believe between the leak, Sakurai's previous tweet mimicking Golden Sun's battles and now this, @LasermasterA is gonna get a heart attack before Isaac is actually revealed.
@Rhaoulos

Ralph has been kind of busy trying to explain Yesss the title of the movie should be exactly that.
But she insists otherwise.
@SpookyPotato These things are not mutually exclusive.
@WiX I think the headline is pretty clear that spoilers may be contained within the article... marking something a news or rumour doesn't change that fact. We deliberately haven't mentioned the item name in the headline or the lead image.
Whilst we take the feedback on board, I think you might want to be a little more careful about clicking into Smash Bros news over the next month as certain things might be considered "spoilers".
Cheers!
Hoping that Direct comes soon, earlier than Nov. 8 even. There will be no peace on the internet until it does.
If Banjo-Kazooie is in it my hate for Microsft as a games company will diminish slightly.
@Capt_N The fact that there's so few new stages would usually bother me, but the amount of stages returning that weren't on smash 4 or haven't returned since their original games is just as exciting. Saffron City, Big Blue, Frigate Orpheon, ooh boy. That's not to mention all the 3ds stages I'll be able to play with my friends lag free.
@personauser0893 8 Player smash was confirmed to be available on every stage back in August.
@CupidStunt
(Is your username a stunt made by Cupid, or a nasty spoonerism...?)
As far as games go, Microsoft's stance on account-sharing and crossplay is awesome. And their sales really oughta teach the Nintendo eShop a lesson or two.
@Klunk23: Yeah, it's very awesome!
@TJWorks You would have if you were Wall-E.
Would have been great if I knew about this last week because I was in Fort Worth.
@WiX I understand your annoyance, but the thing in this article is definitely news and not a leak, as it’s official footage Nintendo released. Mentioning a leak was pretty much unavoidable - if NL played dumb then the comments would be FILLED with people being, “this obviously is from Golden Sun, didn’t you see the leak?” But the leak is a rumor anyways and I’d say, based on other reasons, it would be taken with a grain of salt - this hardly confirms it, and despite its existence thus DOES look specifically like an icon from Golden Sun, which does raise the odds of Isaac as playable (something people have been asking for for awhile now). It doesn’t mean he is though, it could just be an item, Sakurai loves to troll us with the footage he provides.
This information specifically is not a spoiler though and the leak mentioned wasn’t really detailed here so, while it sucks if you’re trying to remain 100% leak free, at least try to take solace that this doesn’t confirm the leak that you now only heard one thing about, it’s not much more likely that the leak was correct, the item could mean anything.
@WiX ask the subtitle DID mention recent rumors, it said what was going to be in the article right there.
@antdickens
Sorry for not being as clear as I could be. What I tried to say was that I understand that the item shown was not officially discussed by Nintendo - showing and making a news about that is completely fine and I did want to see that And I clicked because it was "news" about an official video and knew what I was getting into, rather than a "rumour".
What I didn't specifically like was the fact that an "Isaac leak" was mentioned in the text, as I did not realize specific "rumour" content would be discussed, in this case a leak. As I had no previous knowledge of Isaac being leaked, trying to avoid plain leaks (as opposed to things shown in official trailers etc like I understood to be the case in this article) - this came as a nasty surprise to me.
Yes, the subtitle now points towards the recent leak content, but if I'm not mistaken, it has been changed since it was first published? I think such a direct link was not apparent before, which was why I thought reading the article itself would be safe. However, if it has been the same all the time, then it is my mistake in the end, and I'm sorry for making a fuss. But if it has been changed, my point stands while I also applaud you for changing the subtitle.
While I understand your point about being careful which news to read (which I am trying to be, for example not reading some of the "rumour" articles) and will consider that in the future, it seems a bit worrying that you direct me not to read news articles in the fear of not being unexpectedly spoiled. But of course I appreciate you warning me about this, although I think it would be nice to be able to read news I find interesting without thinking if it would contain leaked information not warned about in the titles. After all, what is the difference between spoilers (which you try to hide with the "rumour" articles and do a good job with those) and non-spoiler content (in this case, the usual "news" articles) if the latter references the former?
I am sorry for a long message and possible miscommunications and I hope you don't take this as just complaining but rather constructive criticism. It is nice that you answered to my first message earlier and are looking at feedback! I am also very sorry if I have made comments that are not true, please correct me if that is the case and I will also try to learn. In any case, I understand that writing articles which everyone are happy about probably is not the most easy thing, and I thank you for a great job that you guys usually do!
@ShadJV
Actually, I think the subtitle has been changed now to highlight potential spoiler content, which is great. I think earlier it didn't mention earlier rumours. If it had, I would not have read the article. However, if the subtitle has not been changed since I first saw it, then I admit I was wrong and jumped to conclusion too early and should not have clicked at all.
Also, there is a difference between a news article and a comment made by a visitor - of course you can never be sure about people leaking stuff, but I think news articles should be more reliable in this regard.
Finally, as I explained in my earlier comment (and maybe not as clearly in my first one, sorry about that), the item reveal was fine, I knew what I was getting into. Linking that to Golden Sun would be fine as well, as that doesn't reveal anything yet, as you said - it could be just an item. The article could even mention, "maybe Isaac is now a playable character", which would just be speculation on the part of the writer. The problem here was a direct mention of an earlier leak, and a specific mention of a character from it - sure, it might be not right but it still gives me info that I'm trying to avoid and did not expect, based on the title of the article (without a warning).
@WiX apologies, what I meant about user comments to the article was that some people get rather up and arms when the articles “play dumb” and don’t acknowledge previous articles on the site - mentioning the leak in article avoids that. It becomes a bit of a chore when half the responses to an article are just people saying, “You left out that this is evidence towards that leak being true”. Either way, if you’re reading Smash articles that are labeled as “news”, you’re gonna hear about this stuff soon anyways - the leak was about an upcoming direct, not about any surprises in game. Whether Isaac is in the game is independent from the leak unless he’s announced in a Direct that covers everything else in the leak - anything different means the person likely got some lucky guesses, which should be less of a problem because hey, we can all place guesses, doesn’t make them actual leaks.
I am sorry you read something you wanted to avoid but I think NL was in the right for including that in the article. If they changed the subtitle, then yeah, maybe it should’ve said that in the first place. I agree there. Once again, try to look at the silver lining at least - if the leak is real it’s just spoiler stuff from the next Direct (and I still wouldn’t place my bets on it being real - if it is, this is not the only surprise waiting for you, but it all seemed a bit far fetched to me so I currently think that, should Isaac be in here, that was a lucky guess).
I am hoping we don’t get a Smash demo though. It’s so close anyways, at this point we may as well wait the last month and a half - a demo would be a chance for dataminers to find any last information on the game and I don’t want to be spoiled to any surprises Sakurai left and intentionally did not announce!
@WiX also, I apologize if anything I said has come of wrong, I’ve definitely not meant to sound dismissive. You have been very nice about this all and that’s worth pointing out, some people can get really rude online when upset. Thank you for remaining polite through this.
@AlexSora89
Oh hey! You still remember me huh? xD
Yup, this is a wild ride for me as a GS fan. The Grinch leak (ESRB 2.0 to me) and now this growth item. Also the tweet from Sakurai with Rathalos which really hinted at Isaac.
I'm looking forward to the future now, especially after the huge lull we had post Isabelle. This leak really shook things up (lol)!
We should get some official news in a week or so, then we'll know how true this all is. But this growth item looks very promising. Also, literally no one expected psynergy to turn to items, so if it's legit, Sakurai did it again. He bamboozled us with something we didn't expect!
@Torakaka

I dunno. The adult artwork of Isaac from Golden Sun Dark Dawn would have to be his own separate character...
... unless they go the Cloud route, as there is an age difference between FFVII Cloud and Advent Children Cloud.
I'd personally prefer the Olimar/Alph route with actual Dark Dawn protagonist Matthew, though.

It's time.

@LasermasterA
You're baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack! Yaaaaaaaay!! ^^
Yep, and I've come up with Alt suggestions too.
What would you prefer? Dad Isaac, or Matthew?
@AlexSora89
Glad to be back wooo!!
To be fair, I'd prefer Felix as an echo. Like Simon/Richter.
Dad Isaac is a total hunk though, so I wouldn't mind that either. Matthew can be an alt to regular Isaac, like Alph and Olimar.
@LasermasterA
Both are viable with the Cloud dualism in mind as I mentioned before, but Matthew would make a cool alt too. Felix didn't even cross my mind, but you gotta admit developing an echo - especially taking into account Golden Sun's relatively low relevance as of now - would take too much time, given having Isaac himself would be great enough as-is. As much as Golden Sun is Nintendo's first Final Fantasy stand-in: baby steps, man, baby steps.
The other two Golden Sun games must of hit it out of the park, because I played the first one and wasn't entertained beyond "Oh, that spritework is kinda neat." Isaac in Smash Bros will give me the same sort of meh feeling. But hey, don't let me rain on your parade too much, Golden Sun fans. Most of the messageboard darlings of Smash speculation do very little for me.
@ReaderRagfish
Close, as in "close, but no cigar"?
Because the problem is the sprout is similar to the GS sprout, yes, but at the same time, isn't the latter similar to, well, a very generic sprout? I mean, the GBA sprite could be any sprout.
But the resemblance is still striking, so it's a 75% yes, 25% no to me.
@AlexSora89
Yea I'm glad with only Isaac, was just mentioning a possiblity. As long as my golden boi is in, we gucci.
@LasermasterA
Golden in every sense of the word! XD
Also, I guess you're going to swap your second profile pic (I remember your first one was Isaac's official character artwork from Golden Sun) with the official render once the reveal hits.
I just can't wait to see your reaction when it happens. It's a shame @memoryman3 wasn't there (at least, as far as I can remember) in the comment section for Daisy's reveal article - the demand for him to pop up was a sight to behold. I hope you'll be [among] the first to comment.
@WiX Just to let you know, the subtitle wasn't changed. As for everything else, we've taken your feedback on board. Thanks for the feedback.
@AlexSora89
I'll be there, no worries. I'm waiting for that reveal ahhh!
@Liam_Doolan
In that case, I am terribly sorry for making more noise than I should have As @antdickens pointed out, I should be more careful when selecting what Smash news to read, as this case showed. Maybe I didn't quite understand my own best with the "recent rumours" part (well naturally, as I didn't know about the rumours as leaks that spoil characters), but for sure I will pay more attention to the subtitles now and try to think if there will be content I will not like in the middle of content I do like.
Of course this does not nullify all of my comments, and it is nice to see that you guys take the feedback into account I think when compared to earlier times, there has been an improvement in revealing (or rather, not revealing) spoilers on the site in the form of headlines and news pictures, so kudos to you! And I hope my comments have not left a sour taste for you - I learned something and hopefully you got something helpful out of this as well
@ShadJV
And thank you for your politeness as well! Yeah, people tend to easily blurt stupid things online, and I do want to avoid that Of course, I am not perfect either and probably could have been even a bit more... Less-worded, I guess But my intention was not to cause sadness/anger, just point things out
You have made good points, and as you said, it is not the end of the world and in the end, potentially knowing one character is not that much as I have already been surprised several times by Sakurai and will be maybe again a time or two Although I do still enjoy the surprise elements in Directs rather than just unceremoniously seeing "btw, Isaac might be in the game" in a news article I erroneously read with wrong expectations But that is something I will be more careful with from now on!
Thank you for a polite and good discussion!
@LasermasterA
Two weeks tops, from now. Be there!
@ReaderRagfish
Sorry for the late reply, had no notification of yours.
Well sure, the detail is indeed there. Let's cross our fingers...
Well, as much as I would love Taito to get some love in Smash...it looks like Golden Sun to me.
@SpookyPotato that might be a thing coming IF they do include the character.
I mean introducing the character in Smash could be a great excuse for reintroducing the games for a new generation whose curiosity might be piqued by the character's inclusion.
That is, IF the character gets included in the game.
@SnackBox We've known that since E3 lol
