It appears that Team Sonic Racing may well have been delayed until 2019, pushing back the already loose release schedule of "winter 2018".
The rumour comes from an advertisement for the game inside a booklet from the IgroMir Expo 2018 - a Russian computer and video games consumer exhibition. You don't need to be able to read Russian to identify that a "2019" release date has been slapped on the page, with all platforms seemingly being subject to the delay.
Of course, this could simply be a printing error or miscommunication somewhere down the line in the creation of this booklet, but Sega's recent lack of commitment to a solid date for the game means that we wouldn't be surprised to see it arrive a little later than planned. Our very own video star Alex Olney spent some time with the game at EGX last month, and it certainly seems like it needs a little bit of work before zooming onto our screens.
"I managed to play it for a few races at EGX on the PS4, and frankly it ran like a dog, and not a very athletic dog. The frame rate started at 60 but dipped tremendously, averaging out closer to half that, although I don't have any exact figures as we couldn't capture. Naturally the PS4 version isn't necessarily representative of the Switch release, but if a more powerful machine couldn't run it even remotely smoothly it's not surprising to think they might delay it. Of course I've no idea how old the build I played was, so it's possible it's much further along than what they showed at the event, but if a delay does happen, I wouldn't be at all surprised."
Are you looking forward to Team Sonic Racing on Switch? Will you be picking up a copy whenever it does eventually release? Let us know below.

I don't understand why Sonic would ever drive a car. He can probably run faster than any car could ever drive. I mean, in the old cartoons and anime couldn't he actually run fast enough to run on water?
It was like those silly filler episodes of Dragon Ball Z where Chi-Chi made Goku and Piccolo get Driver's Licenses. I think that was before Goku could just teleport anywhere like a god, but at that point they were already flying faster than Jet airplanes...
@Heavyarms55 He has good sportsmanship.
On topic: I'm down for a delay. My wallet is already weeping at all the games coming before the year ends.
I'm afraid Miyamoto's philosophy won't be applicable here no matter how much they delay this.
Release it and leave it to the lions, I say.
And I agree with the sentiment that the notion of Sonic driving a car is inherently stupid.
Not surprised as the previous game on Wii U and 3ds played like a dead dog, framerate must of been 20fps! Least they are gonna fix it this time as they didn't even release a patch for the last one.
Sumo need to talk to the makers of Mario kart to see how a racing game should run or better yet retire!
Shoddy workmanship on a Sonic game? Like that would ever happen 😉
Seriously though I forgot this game even existed until I read this article
@Heavyarms55 The standard Sega reply is Sonc drives a car to give the other racers a chance as he would smoke them otherwise but the real answer is he wants a transfer to the vastly superior Mario kart series!
I hope this game's probable lack of success doesn't get in the way of a Snake Pass 2, that's what I really wanna see from Sumo Digital right now.
@USWITCH64 I've always hoped they would add him into Mario Kart, but that he wouldn't use a Kart. That they would just pull some nonsense excuse out of thin air and just have him run in the races.
It'd probably never happen, but it'd entertain me greatly.
Also on that note, I don't want Mario Kart 9. I want "Super Smash Kart" Or basically a successor to Mario Kart, but with the diverse cast of the Super Smash Brothers games.
@USWITCH64
The Wii U version is 30fps 90% of the time stable...

Push Square had a hands on with it recently and said it was rubbish. Other than the weak roster we already knew about, as well as boring tracks they said it handles poorly. I'm not surprised in the slightest to read it's been delayed.
So much for Sega saying they were going to release fewer, higher quality Sonic games from now on. Since those comments we've had Sonic Forces with Sonic Racing up next.
@Cobalt ok I believe you but try playing it after Mario kart 8 and it feels like 10 FPS
@USWITCH64
I have MK8 and SASRT. I have no problem to play one or the other.
MK8 is smoother that's a fact but SASRT has some really good stuffs in terms of gameplay and possibilities...
Even if I prefer a perfect 60fps, I highly recommend to give a try to SASRT because it's a great game and this is the most important. ^^
Anyone else shocked Sega have delayed a Sonic game instead of just shipping it broken? Good on them for a change!
I can’t believe Sumo Digital would ever release a game that was sub-par. SSRAST ran smoothly on an Xbox 360, looked the business and was full of depth.
@Cobalt yeah it's a good game, particularly like the afterburner 2 stage, just wish they could have patched it to run smoother
Winter 2018 = December 21st - March 21st, so yeah obviously it will be 2019, nothing new here.
It’s literally the same as Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition, which was also slated for Winter 2018 but comes out on January 11th.
They should delay it as much as necessary. S&ASRT runs pretty good on 360/Wii U. Of course the 3DS version doesn't, but it's a miracle that the game can run on 3DS at all.
It is more fun than MK7 and MK8 anyway. I hope that they polish the sequel so it doesn't disappoint people with a more-open mind than die-hard Nintendo apologists, people that can give it a chance at least.
That's disappointing if true. I am really looking forward this game as I'm a big fan of Sonic All-Star Racing Transformed, it's one of my most wanted games this year.
Don't really care about the game to be honest
@Heavyarms55 If there has to be a new Mario Kart game to replace MK8 Deluxe, Mario Kart Ultimate would be my pick with 152 tracks (145 retro, 7 new) and a load of battle arenas (all retro + a few new). But I'd prefer MK8 Deluxe getting DLC/updates to reach that goal instead.
makes sense, since the date should already be announced if it is a 2018 release
@Heavyarms55 Smash Kart would also be what I want. MK8 proved how stupidly limiting the Mario IP is - do we really need 5 different Marios and 4 different Peaches on the roster?
Honestly, I'd be happy with a delay, we got Smash Bros in December so with that and the amiibos, my wallet is gonna be waning abit thin anyway.
Hard to care either way. The last Sonic racing game was good (no MK8 but a really fun game) but this one has removed all the interesting ‘Sega’ stuff and just left us with the dull ‘Sonic’ bits.
@BensonUii Well fine, they can keep it as Mario Kart if that works for marketing, but bringing in more IPs is the way I really want it to go. Mario, Pikachu, Samus, Fox, Marth, Pit, all in the same race would be awesome! And imagine the variety of Karts they could put in the game with all those IPs! And the DLC options too!
I love Sonic Racing. The WiiU version was awesome. Whenever it comes out I will get it. I do not mind if it takes longer. There is no game drought these days anyway.
@Heavyarms55 - Why not Smash Everything?
Smash Tennis
Smash Strikers
Smash Odyssey
Smash of the Wild
The possibilities are actually quite good.
@USWITCH64 @Heavyarms55 - Ugh not this whole "Sonic wouldn't drive a car" thing again. Why would Bowser drive a kart and be a good little participant alongside everyone else in MK8? It doesn't matter, it's a friggin racing game.
Seeing Bowser politely clapping like a pansy in the new Mario Party made me laugh though.
Maybe they can use that time to connect the wheels to Knuckles' car.
@Heavyarms55 Man, that episode they have to get a driver`s license must be the most senseless episode in all of Dragon Ball`s history. I think Chichi wanted them to be more normal or something. She also wanted Goku to be a farmer, so she`s not the smartest lol.
@Heavyarms55 I assume he just races for the fun of it. Driving a car and competing against others is a different experience than running on foot. Like, I can generally obtain a pizza much faster if I order it from a restaurant, but sometimes I make my own pizza just because it’s fun and different.
@Heavyarms55 If you're alright with losing every race you participate in, then sure. He doesn't need a car.
@MattFox And she only got worse in Super...
@Heavyarms55 Well, thats the lady who thought Gohan`s education was more important than saving the planet lol. Oh yeh, in super that she wanted Goku to be a farmer lol
@Mando44646 I'd argue that the Mario IP would have more to offer if they dug into Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, or even just missing characters like Petey Piranha and E. Gadd. Not so much a problem with the IP as it is a problem with Nintendo's refusal to do anything with it.
That said, Super Smash Kart would be awesome. It would force the game to diversify and I've to see what they'd come up with for Fire Emblem or Kid Icarus..
@Prizm Well said! I'm tired of the "logic" applied to games 0.00000000001%.
Please no more "Why is Sonic driving a car?" It's a pointless question.
