While there's still basically no information regarding the upcoming mobile release Mario Kart Tour, Nintendo's latest Q2 2019 financial briefing has reconfirmed the game is still on course in terms of development. The "service" is arriving sometime before the end of March 2019:
We also plan to start a service for Mario Kart Tour, a Mario Kart application for smart devices, sometime during the current fiscal year in March 2019. With titles like these we intend to continue to expand our smart-device business and make it a pillar of revenue for Nintendo.
Mario Kart Tour was originally revealed by Nintendo in February this year. Around the time of this year's E3, Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aimé also said development of the game was on track and explained how Nintendo would reveal more about it closer to launch.

Looking forward to this
Am I correct in saying that, so far, the only continued success that Nintendo has had on mobile is FEH?
Service? Does that mean it's not a game?
I was wondering whatever happened to this. Glad it's still 'on track' but I'd seriously love to know more about what it actually is sooner rather than later.
I need a new mobile, if this is really good then this might tip me over the edge into getting one just to play it.
@Mogster Super Mario run, animal crossing and Dragalia Lost have all still made tons of money..
If development is on track, let's just hope it doesn't get blue shelled...
@Mogster Nope.
Pokémon Go.
Dragalia Lost.
And animal crossing or Mario run aren’t failures. They’re just not massive successes.
The only failure they’ve had on mobile is miitomo

I've never seen the use for a high-end smartphone so this one will pass me by I'm afraid.
@iammikegaines if only he were running Nintendo..
Hmm, it’s likely going to be loaded with IAP’s
Waiting patiently for a fully fledged Mario Kart 9
Development hit a bumpy road (Choco Mountain) but is now back on track (Mario Circuit).
@iammikegaines
He doesn't like that but it doesn't mean they won't do it.
Dragalia Lost came out after that statement and it has microtransactions. Mario Run was their last (and only) free to start effort but it underperformed and has been surpassed by their free to play efforts ( in revenue).
@mist I feel like they're more likely to support MK8 with dlc, if they do anything with MK within the next few years. Maybe later into the Switch lifespan.
They can't make Mario Kart Mobile too good cause Mario Kart is a reason for many people to buy Switch and pay 60$ extra for it. So it will be a stripped down version. Not even sure if it will be as good as Angry Birds Kart clone.
What I'm wondering is, is this going to be a F2P switch game? Because it seems odd to make a mobile game, and then make another app for that mobile game acting as some kind of service. It seems like it'd be easy to just put the Service in the base app instead of taking up 2 apps.
@patbacknitro18 its not gonna be a F2P switch game. Its a game for iOS and android phone
This could either be really good or deviate a bit too far from what makes Mario Kart good. If you look at FE:H, AC:PC and SMR, they all simplify the formula quite a bit. I hope there isn't auto-acceleration or something equally annoying.
Not gonna lie, the word service is making me twitchy.
@dimi It wouldn't be the first time we've had F2P Nintendo mobile games on console as well though. Pokemon Quest exists on Switch and Pokemon Scramble was back on 3DS. Granted, these are both GameFreak, but they are proof Nintendo isn't against it happening at all at least.
'On Track' .... Pun intended? lol 😋
I’m not sure how it’s going to work TBH.
All mobile output so far has been of portrait orientation so it can be played one-handed and in short 5-minute bursts. How would this work for racing?
I can only imagine the game is some sort of racing management sim, where you pick a team of characters from the MK universe and the ‘racing’ is relegated to the status of football games in management games.
It might end up being quite fun, but I can’t see it being a pure racing game.
Don't do phone gaming and never will.
Instead... Port over Mario kart arcade GP 1&2 to Switch???
@Mogster as others have noted, Dragalia Lost is doing quite well.
"Service", huh? This makes me think of Switch Online. I hope that this isn't some sort of "service" like SplatNet.
@Mogster dragalia lost is very Successful at the moment bearing in mind it has been released in like 5 countries so far
