Mojang has revealed its future plans for Minecraft. The new content was announced at this year's Minecon Earth - an annual event for all things related to the one and only crafting, building and survival game.
Other than the announcement Panda mobs and more cats are on the way, the next update "Village and Pillage" - due out next year - was detailed. This content will add new villagers to the game and fill the villages in each overworld with the new NPC. Villager designs will vary depending on the biome. Take a look below at the jungle outfits:
Don't just expect friendly folk, though. Nefarious pillagers and beasts will also be unleashed upon the villages around each world. These foes will be equipped with the new crossbow weapon. Players will also be able to craft this weapon. In combat, the crossbow is said to be slower but more powerful than a regular bow. Enchantments can be used on the weapon to enhance reload times or increase the shot capacity.
Villages now have more variety as well - with the look of each one dependant on the biome. New building materials including scaffolding are being added in as well. On a different but related note, a new piece of Minecraft marketplace content will be released for free later this year. Below is a description:
Inspiration Island, a floating theme park world filled with creative challenges. Whether you are new to Creative Mode or just need a little extra inspiration, a visit here sets you on the path to craft your own groundbreaking worlds. By the time you leave the island, you’ll be a true blue creator, armed with loads of skills to make awesome things!
Last is the announcement of a completely "new" Minecraft game. Minecraft Dungeons is inspired by classic dungeon crawlers. Here's the description and trailer:
What exactly is Minecraft: Dungeons? It’s an all-new action-adventure game inspired by classic dungeon crawlers, where you’ll constantly discover new weapons and items that will help you defeat a ruthless swarm of new-and-nasty mobs. You’ll fight or flee through canyons, swamps and – of course – mines!
You can brave the dungeons alone, or team up with friends. Up to four players can battle together through action-packed, treasure-stuffed, wildly varied levels, all in an epic quest to save the villagers and take down the evil Arch-Illager!
The new game is expected to arrive at some point on PC in 2019. Unfortunately, there's no word on a console release.
Does any of this upcoming Minecraft content interest you? Do you play Minecraft on the Switch or other Nintendo devices? Do you like the idea of Minecraft Dungeons? Would you like to see it come across to console eventually? Tell us below.

Still want minecraft on switch, I watched the whole thing live yesterday, new update looks great and I can't wait for dungeons
@aznable both, I can confirm, I’m autistic and people call me artistic a lot.
Am I the only person on earth that hasn’t played Minecraft?
...When is the custom avatars for consoles happening? They already said this was a thing some time ago after the Switch version released and then went completely quiet after that.
@aznable We Autistics prefer games of quality good sir.
Let we compare between Minecraft & Portal Knights.
Panda in Minecraft
Panda in Portal Knights
No news on the Super Duper Graphics Pack?
It sounds nice, villages were a bit boring
@Enigmaraff That's what I thought when watching
@Anti-Matter both are great in their own ways! The games, and the pandas.
I haven't cared for Minecraft since its launch, but Dungeons could be interesting.
Honestly just seems like something modders have been doing since minecraft existed. So I'm not sure how receptive the PC crowd will be to it as a seperate game, unless the combat mechanics are significantly different.
I’m Minecraft-ed our for now, so after a (long) break I’ll come back. The new stuff seems really cool.
@Joeynator3000 But Joey... if you could load your own custom avatars, why would you buy them? The move from PC to console is Mojang/Microsofts chance to phase out custom skins.
@DanteSolablood to be fair the main reason the console versions don't have custom skins is because you can really add your own pictures to most consoles (you need the actual file for the skin, there's no in-game creator).
Bedrock on PC and mobile does let you use custom skins.
The catch is that custom skins are as basic as they can be, while purchased skins can be as complex as they want.
@Yosheel Oh interesting, when you say custom skins are basic in which way? I used to be a skin-maker on the Java version & there are some epic skin building tools online... do you have to make them on the console or just import them to a folder?
Can't wait! I've taken a break for quite some time now, lets say 2 years. When the update launches, it might be a great time to dive back into.
@Saego I'm in the same place - taken quite the break (even stopped my YouTube Channel). Might be worth delving back in with all this new stuff.
@justin233 well. I played it for 15 minutes and deemed it a waste of my time, so I guess if u didn't play it ever, u might be the only one left yeah. 😂
@DanteSolablood they're regular "human" skins (with the base layer and one extra layer for details or clothing), you can only use one image with the texture. While paid skins can have custom models, extra detail, etc.
In versions that support custom skins, you just choose a file from your computer/phone.
If you wish to actually make one, you either need to find a base online and edit it yourself, or use an external skin creator.
@Yosheel Ah, so you can upload them - that's fine. I'm pretty experienced.
@DanteSolablood well it’s local only. A good solution would be if the game uploaded them to your account so you could use the same custom skin in multiple systems.
@MasterJay it worries me. Might be a fair way off if they had no announcement.
Minecraft officially adding things mods added in 2014. Lol
New content is still appreciated though.
@Enigmaraff Yeah, if you ask on one of their streams, they might have more to tell
I didn't even know that people still played Minecraft.
@Matthewxcv It's been in the eShop's top-selling list ever since it was released. Think it was number 4 or 5 last I checked.
Yeah, they're still not actually touching any of the concept's real potential here, I feel. I'll check out these initiatives, but it all seems a little played out to me.
@Iacobus I haven't checked the eShop on a while. I haven't heard much about the game in a long time
Shame that the world size is limited by the save regulations. 3072 x 3072 isn't cutting it for since i like the do themed build and gap them with nice transportation paths.
I think I'll start playing again when console versions have shields...
So Dungeons makes the game a little more like (worldof) Warcraft (and Diablo)?
