We already knew that the legendary Neo Geo title Windjammers was Switch-bound, but today Dotemu has confirmed that a sequel will also be headed to Nintendo's machine.
Due for release in 2019, Windjammers 2 will "combine everything fans love about the classic title", and will include "entirely hand-drawn 2D animations". No gameplay footage has been revealed a yet, but you can watch the fancy animated trailer above.
The original game was developed by Data East, and it's not currently known if this sequel has any of the original team involved.
The first title arrives on Switch on October 23rd this year.

I recently bought Windjammers on PS4 and it’s a fun game. Pretty cool that a sequel is coming. Can’t wait to see what the game play looks like.
Whoa, that's a surprise out of the blue if i ever saw one...
Good to know.
Seems like the switch is slowly but surely becoming home to a bunch of classic titles revivals.
Good news
Man, what it is today with indies and surprises?
I want to see gameplay trailer though, I remember that other Windjammers inspired game that came to the 3DS being less impressive.
Hyyyyyyyyyyyyype!
Now give me a finnish player and the game will be a 10/10 instantly.
I spat my coffee out at this announcement. Really didn't see it coming!
Monthly reminder that DotEmu is bad people and this is not something to be excited about. With all the talk about emulation lately, it's important to know that DotEmu is one of the worst companies at it and there's no indication that they'll do new titles any better.
Looks almost like a cartoon
Ewwww, another DotEmu game.
I hope Windjammers 1 comes well emulated and cheap, but I'd prefer it with Hamster.
Anyway, I've always read or heard that DotEmu sucks, but... why is that? Do you guys have any examples?
Remember when they said there will never be another Windjammers?
Either way, very excited to see this come!
@Moroboshi876 From what I understand, their emulation accuracy of games leaves a lot to be desired. Most of their games are just slapdash, so they just about run, albeit with glitches and/or not faithful to original. Their Steam games are a good example of this.
@NiaBladerunner A shame then. But I didn't see any mention of bad emulation in Windjammers' review for PS4. Was it maybe an exception?
Well THAT was unexpected. A Winjammers sequel. With lovely animated 90s dudes and dudettes.
Looking forward to seeing more of that!
Can't wait and that animation is gorgeous!
I bought the original on PS4 and it is one of the most fun multiplayer games ever. Excited to see the gameplay of the sequel.
They certainly have a good design team. Much better than most 80’s throwback stuff that overdoes it
Interesting to see how it fairs with the less than enjoyable disc jam?
@NiaBladerunner Bit harsh. I quite like DotEmu - they did a great job with Wonder Boy and the Dragon's Trap for Switch, and a thoroughly decent job with the mobile ports of Ys I and II. Can't speak for their work on Steam, though. I guess the simplicity of those three titles is key - and Wind Jammers is hardly DOOM.
@Krull Well, if I'm not mistaken Wonder Boy was made by Lizard Cube and just published by DotEmu.
@Moroboshi876 You are right! I realised that myself some hours later. Still, I quite like DotEmu anyway. They have good taste.
