Digerati has announced that it will be bringing Shikhondo - Soul Eater, an intense bullet-hell shoot ‘em up, to Nintendo Switch this summer.
Created by Korean-based independent developer DeerFarm, Shikhondo - Soul Eater features hypnotic barrage patterns, enemies inspired by Asian mythology, and a visually stunning aesthetic across the board. The game was originally released on Steam in October last year, but has been updated for consoles with an all-new 2-player local co-op mode, as seen in the trailer above.
In the game, your job is to destroy an army of demons known as yokai, freeing the pour souls captured within. There are several modes to explore, two playable characters, and online leaderboards for those of you with a competitive nature. You can check out the full feature list below.
Key features:
- Five stages of intense bullet-hell action and hypnotic barrage patterns
- Game modes include: Arcade, Hardcore, Boss Rush and Local Co-op
- Fly close to enemy bullets to fill the Soul Gauge and unleash a super attack for high scores
- Two playable characters, each with their own types of attack
- Online leaderboards for high score glory
- Demonic enemies and bosses inspired by Asian mythology
- Stunning and intricate Oriental artwork
The game's release date is still to be confirmed, but a limited edition physical version will be available to pre-order from Play-Asia from 28th June.

Giggity
It shall be mine day one!
It looks absolutely beautiful and was very well received on Steam.
I'll definitely get that physical version.
However, i'm starting to find it really irritating that NL still has no Quad Fighter K review and still has not reported on Sisters Royale (new shmup from Alfa System, creators of Castle of Shikigami, available on the JP eShop now) at all.
This looks nice, though after Danmaku 3 I'm a bit more wary.
@SmaggTheSmug Yeh, wish I hadn't paid attention to the Danmaku3 review here. This game looks like that, but better looking visuals.
Too ‘bullet hell’ for my tastes by the looks of it.
I see the words 'bullet hell' used to describe most shmups these days, even when there really aren't that many bullets flying around. THIS is a bullet hell shmup!
Looks amazing, I will be picking this up for sure.
Nice artwork let down by that simplistic flash style animation. Luckily, the game looks good 🙂
@SmaggTheSmug Did you not like Danmaku 3?
@bilboa I found it simply boring. Maybe I just haven't played enough of it, but I don't have the desire to find out.
I probably shouldn't have bought it at the same time as Steredenn and Star Force. One is great and the other has nostalgia value for me. Danmaku just looks bland and constrained and generally feels dull. Also I don't like the idea of filling the screen with my own projectiles unless it's a silly game like Jets n' Guns, but there it only happened after several upgrades over the campaign.
I definitely found a more satisfying bullet hell experience in Dragon Blaze. But I still don't play it as much as the other two.
A Korean game in an entirely Japanese art style, with a Japanese name and a Japanese setting, and the company's description says "Oriental".....
What country is this from, again? It feels like some Steampunk alternate future.
I wasn`t really good at this type of game when I was younger, and that hasn`t changed. So it`s a pass for me lol...
@SmaggTheSmug Thanks. I played Danmaku 2 and liked it, so was wondering how Danmaku 3 compared.
@bilboa I really enjoy Denmaku 3, as a contrasting opinion. Nails that "Zen" bullethell feeling.
@bilboa
SmaggTheSmug compared DU3 to Star Force, Steredenn and Dragon Blaze, not to Danmaku Unlimited 2.
I think if you liked DU2 you'll also like DU3.
@bilboa Danmaku Unlimited 3 is great and despite the many shmups on Switch is currently the only game like it.I can understand it not being for everyone but if you liked DU2 then it goes without saying you'll enjoy 3.
@OorWullie @kepsux Thanks. From the gameplay video I saw DU3 looked similar to DU2. I agree these kind of games aren't for everyone. If you want any sort of story, permanent upgrades and progression, or complex mechanics, games like this will disappoint. For me the main draw of playing bullet hell games like this is the trancelike state you need to get into to recognize the different bullet patterns. It's just so satisfying to guide the clearly marked hit box in the middle of the ship through a complex pattern of bullets.
@bilboa I think you'll dig DU3 then, it's the second best shump on the Swiitch, without a doubt.
