A couple months ago, Psyonix made it clear that it would be releasing a patch for Rocket League on the Switch in the future which would be adding in new video options to give fans greater controls over the fidelity of the experience. The update is due to launch on 3rd April next week, so the studio has chosen to detail what all will be contained in the big patch. As you’d expect, there’s plenty of good news here.
The existent mode that Rocket League plays in will be referred to as Performance mode, but there will also be a Quality mode that caps the frames at 30 FPS and bumps the resolution to 1920x1080 docked and 1280x720 in handheld, in addition to other improvements like lens flare, light shafts, dynamic shadows, and depth of field. In addition to this, video capture support will be added so you can save recordings of all those sweet goals.
What do you think? Have you been enjoying Rocket League on Switch? Are you any good? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I’m glad to see the support. This’ll be fun to play around with.
Nice for users that prefer graphics and resolution but to me, nothing beats 60fps and fluidity in gameplay.
Improved resolution and graphics, yes please. Sometimes in handheld mode in certain stadiums it can be difficult to see where the ball is when you are a good distance away from it. This should help with that.
I honestly couldn't get into this game. I gave into the hype but didn't find it all that fun. I guess it's just not my cup of tea.
@Heavyarms55 It isn't the type of game I normally play, but I liked it. It is part Mario Kart, part Monkey Ball, part soccer, and part billiards.
Kudos to Psyonix for listening to the fan feedback as well as dedication to the platform
I wanted to like this game but everyone else is so good and I constantly got crushed. :’(
@Heavyarms55 Yeah have it on PS4, it's alright but I thought a lot of people overhyped it.
Very cool but I would just stick with the 60fps mode. Been waiting to pick this game up until one of my friends do but none of them seem to want it :/
Great...except for the fact that they still haven't fixed the issue experienced by myself and several other Switch users on the subreddit that causes the software to crash quite frequently. The issue has all but killed my enjoyment of the game, which I find really saddening, as I really loved playing it.
Calculated.
Still wondering if I should buy this. I'm mostly an offline guy and MK8 is already filling my MP needs but damn, this one seems just so much fun...
60fps all the way for me
@RetroGamerAndrew I was an offline guy until I bought this, seriously its amazing give it a try.
Giving players the choice of favouring 60 FPS or 1080p is fabulous news for Rocket League fans! Thank you Psyonix!
@wiggleronacid @RetroGamerAndrew I say go for it. It's currently on sale in the European eShop and wasn't expensive at full price. I bought it last year on Switch and have only really now been getting heavily into it.
I recommend playing seasons against the A.I. on each of the three difficulty settings whilst also jumping online. I had no clue what to do but am learning fast because of it.
I'll happily play with you folks if you need a buddy.
@RetroGamerAndrew I wasn’t sure about this game at first but ended up buying it. I also tend to play more offline. It’s good to play online but there is an offline season mode as well as other match types. The AI is good enough so you still get the same experience and fun of the game as you do playing online.
Fantastic
Was gonna dismiss this entirely till I saw the visual benefits of Quality mode and I've gotta say I'll definitely try this Quality mode. Might be good.
@Lroy @gb_nes_gamer @Deanster101
Thanks for the insights guys. There's some time left before the end of the sale still, I'll think about it. Cheers
But is it better than fifa?
@immensechicken yes.
@TheMadPolarBear I prefer 30-45fps and full 1080... Feels more movie like for me
@immensechicken It's quite possibly the best competitive game ever made.
I wonder if the performance mode comes with any improvements too or will it just be the same as it is now? Having video capture will be great,I've scored some absolute screamers.
I think tournament mode also comes with this update which will add so much to competitive play.
Amazing game from a developer that gets what pleasing your customers is all about. Love having options.
Unfortunately I quite quickly get motion sickness from 3D games running in 60fps, so if I played Rocket League I'd be trying out the new mode.
@gb_nes_gamer No no no no no no sorry but no. Offline (for seasoned players) is ridiculously easy and offers no real value. Online (after about 100-1000 hours) is a joy. It really is amazingly competitive and being able to carry a ball through the entire length of the field in the air only to tap it around the keeper is amazing. This ONLY comes from HOURS and HOURS of online practice. If you limit yourself to offline, you aren't really playing Rocket League the way it was intended.
My sons play this, Splatoon 2, and ARMS on a constant rotating basis with an occasional switch to the Wii U for Minecraft. This is the only one that isn't online with their friends talking over facetime because they tend to play this 4 player split screen in our family room.
Nice shot!!! Video Capture!
@Gerbwmu Minecraft is on the switch too!
Glad to see some options added in.
These additions are welcomed, especially as playing multiplayer on the same console makes my eyes bleed.
@gb_nes_gamer I agree with @SirWalrus , if you're limiting yourself to playing offline you're missing out on so much of what this game can offer. The skill ceiling in this game is enormous if not unlimited, you can never be good enough. The more you play the better you get but to get better you need to be playing against better players and a variety of playstyles which is only possible by playing competitive mode and trying to rank up. The AI is OK for learning the basics of the game or those times you really want to play it but can't get online but other than that, it's an online game all the way.
@OorWullie @SirWalrus I didn’t say play exclusively offline. I said that there is a good gameplay experience to be had offline as well as being good to play online.
@gb_nes_gamer see I don't think so. I think offline has probably put off more people than it's enticed. It's very dull compared to online play and is essentially redundant once you venture online.
@SirWalrus fair comment but I’ve played online and offline and the gameplay experience was practically the same. Of course with that kind of game it’s better to play with other people.
So are the two modes separate? I guess that would make sense; people who want to save their battery could play in performance mode...
Cool update nonetheless! Mostly excited about video capture.
@hippoeater - yeah but I don't feel the need to upgrade it......at least not till the cross platform play and a physical version is released. All their friends still play Wii U version.
this stuff is getting disturbingly close to PCs.
PS4Pro/XBX also has stuff like this.
may as well cut out the toys and go right into PC gaming.
I appreciate the fact that we'll have options. I personally don't mind the lesser quality to keep the 60fps, but that's just me.
@Heavyarms55
"I honestly couldn't get into this game. I gave into the hype but didn't find it all that fun. I guess it's just not my cup of tea."
Same here. And I was sooooooo looking forward to it as well after never having even played Rocket League in all those years prior.
I traded it back in a week or so later.
TBH I actually like the concept of the game, and it is fun, but when playing online which is kinda the big selling point of the game, and seeing how good everyone else is, and I don't even get a single touch of the ball, let alone a goal lol, I realised how much I sucked at it, and how much time I would need to put into it to get remotely good at it, and my gaming time is so precious that I don't want to spend it forcing myself to get good at a game.
@Gerbwmu I didn't know this had 4 player split screen. I'm giving it to my nephew next weekend for his birthday when we go visit them so we'll have to put that to use. I don't think they go online much, if ever at all, so it will be good I'm there to update the game and explain it to them.
We have it on PS4, don't feel the need to double dip.
It's always good to have options but this really isn't a game to be playing at 30fps for the sake of a resolution bump
I will be sticking with performance mode as 60fps > graphic improvements.
While saying that it is always a plus to give players options if they want to have better graphic and don't care about 60fps.
@NintyNate so playing a game as a stuttering mess is like watching a smooth 24fps movie?
@Heavyarms55 Rocket League is a weird one. Early on it was meh for me as well. It mostly becomes fun and addicting once you play enough to get better and get matched up with players who did the same. Early on for me matches were just confusing messes where nobody knows what or how to do things, but later on when you get better games actually turn into stiff competitive bouts.
Early on I felt the same, and actually left the game for months or almost a year before I came back and got better, and then I racked up like 400 hours in the course of the past two years playing.
As far as the graphical upgrade goes, I think it's a nice plus. It may not be optimal for regular play, but if you're recording replays with the video recorder, I doubt the capture goes above 30 fps anyways. At the very least, the improved setting should make videos look a lot nicer, and would be fun to mess around with.
Wish there were some improvements for performance mode. Ah, well. Game already looks decent enough docked. (Don't bother with handheld; the added lag due to wifi will wreck your game.)
Nice to give people options but 30fps? Ewwwwwwwww noooooooo.
@Gerbwmu My kids have the same rotation except without the Wii U. I see a lot of people kicking Arms but my kids have over 200 hours each.
@Hikingguy That's happen to me a few times. My assumption is that there is some connection issues on the other teams end at play. I can't say for sure.
I'm looking forward to see how the item sorting will work. Hopefully I can split off the items I want to keep from the items that I want to trade.
So my Nintendo switch has been Crashing every so often with This game,brawlout has anyone had this really bad issue as well? Seems that the recent firmware update didn't address this issue at all which really sucks now cause it occurs frequently is annoying as heck.
Nintendo fans aren’t exactly known for their love of sports and cars so I’m not surprised so many people are claiming it’s an overhyped game.
If it was a platformer and had some cute furry creature as a protagonist it would be the next best thing no doubt.
@BarFooToo - ARMS Reminds me more of the 16bit era boxing games then a fighting game and I think that difference is what throws off the fighting gamer crowd. Probably why I enjoy it more then say a Street Fighter or Tekken.....but I was never a fighter fan.
I wouldn't have bought it but the littlest played the trial and fell in love with it. Now his brother and all their friends want to play it together all the time and I think it gets more play then Splatoon2 which surprises me as much as they played the 1st Splatoon.
I think Splatoon2 suffers from no split screen. As more friends get Switches I'm sure Splatoon will make a comeback but for now Rocket League and ARMS with the ability to play all together are the games getting the love.
This game reminds me of Ballblazer so I presume that Id like it but I'd really like to try a demo first.
I downloaded an ARMS testpunch demo the other day but I've not tried it yet. That's another game that interests me, but I'm not that into online and both of those games seem to be heavily focused on it.
@TheMONADO36
i played it on PC. didn't care for it.
probably most people have already played this and made up their mind.
bring out a quality ncaa bball game on the switch and i'm there. too bad those are dead.
and give me burnout3 (or paradise if i have to) and i'd get that as well. i don't care for simu-racing like GT/forza/whatever that pc game is but even something like forza horizons would be great.
I’m glad I was late to this game. Got it on sale and used some gold coins to get it at $12.
So basically saying the port was a lazy and very poor piss job. Aren't these guys also doing Wolfenstein 2?
@DonkeyDiddyKong What are you talking about? They done an incredible job with Rocket League, especially considering the original game was built in Unreal Engine 3,an engine the Switch doesn't support. They also done an incredible job with Doom and like Rocket League have improved it since release. 2 current gen games running brilliantly on a tiny little tablet. Wolfenstein 2 could not be in better hands.
@gb_nes_gamer Yep! I understand that online is "where it's at", but actually I've been pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the offline modes. They're certainly good enough to scratch the RL itch when on a train with no wi-fi for example. I've had a few good league campaigns!
Screen Recording -> Always +1
It's a great game, but, I have no idea why anybody would choose resolution over frame rate. I'll take the 60fps every time.
I am excited about the video capture! Several times I wished I could show my son a replay of a great shot. I am so happy they continue to support this game.
@TDS_Computer there is an option within the game to save videos of your match.
@sword_9mm yeah I love playing my PC in my car, on an airplane, and while using the toilet. Great times.
Have they added in some fun?
I bought this three months ago and have played it for seven minutes
@DonkeyDiddyKong
No. Absolutely not. This does not say that at all. I have no idea why you.would think that.
@bLiNdSiDe82
a nice razor laptop?
@Heavyarms55 i felt the same way but for some reason i kept coming back for 30 mins at a time but then it clicked and and i love it.
@RetroGamerAndrew just dont pay full price. I bought it and it's okay but get ready to go to school
Good to have options. If 30fps is stable I'll go with that.
720p in handheld is creme de la creme.
They should just worry about fixing the issue with the software closing down randomly.
@DonkeyDiddyKong seriously??? these guys have done magic to get this game running this great and ported it from an emgine that isnt even supported on switch
I’m going to try it but I doubt I will keep it that way. Smooth 60fps over seeing every blade of grass, every time for me.
Rocket league has the worst online matchmaking of any game I've ever played, and it's honestly not close.
Other than that it is a fun game.
Great for same console multiplayer.
I actually wish there was a graphic mode where you could turn off the stadium outside the pitch and improve the texture quality. Some pitches have really blocky textures.
I'm torn between downloading this or buying it at retail for twice the price . . .
@electrolite77
Really? I'm sorry did you miss the state of it on release? Clearly it was a half arsed rush job release that they would patch later.
Doom also had problems which they patched though nothing like this.
@OorWullie
Really? I'm sorry did you miss the state of it on release? Clearly it was a half arsed rush job release with plans to patch it later on. Yes it's a lot better now but doesn't change the fact that on release it was awful. Just like other companies they released a rushed half arsed lazy port so they could patch it later. Instead of rushing out games to patch them later, how about actually making the port good to begin with so it doesn't need patch after patch?
Doom also had problems which they patched though nothing like this. I bloody hate fanboys!
@DonkeyDiddyKong
I downloaded and played it since Day 1. It was great. I've got it on 2 other formats and it was just as playable as them. What they've fixed since is just a bonus.
Same applies to Doom. Word for word.
I could have had a temper tantrum about something to do with fanboys but instead I played and enjoyed the games.
The matchmaking really does need work, the skill gap is so big in this game! If you are a rookie or semi pro getting matched up with a veteran or higher just feels terrible and it's usually a slaughter. It's far worse on pc though, I try to play on there and im getting matched with experts and masters constantly as semi pro and it ruins the game.
@OorWullie
Agree.....they are the best port team on Switch at the moment. Wolf2 is gonna be great. I loved how they bitch slapped Capcom when they came out and said we would like a shot at porting Monster Hunter World after Capcom baulked at it themselves.
@Heavyarms55 Exactly like me. I bought it in the recent sale that the Japanese eShop had... but I found it to be a waste of money. I thought it was going to be a lot of fun since it is quite a popular game.... but, sadly, not for me... Just like Fe, another one I bought on sale, but it feels like wasted money...
@maruse Sometimes it happens. I haven't played Fe however.
@sword_9mm wrote: "this stuff is getting disturbingly close to PCs.

Daft comment. It's just a single option with two choices, stemming from one of the most heavily debated and polarizing issues among various video gaming communities. Both options can be just as much optimized for the platform since it still means dealing with default configuration(s).
So it's not something to be panicking over.
And calling consoles toys in relation to gaming PCs is ludicrous.
I was hoping for a graphics upgrade for the 60 fps mode, not some optional 30 fps experience
Anyone who chooses the 30fps option will be at a huge disadvantage. I was hoping for better graphics at 60fps, not a 30fps option.
@carlos82 Never understood the “cinematic experience” myself either. You don’t play a movie, there is no input. The input lag at 24 or 30fps is huge compared to 60fps, especially important in a fast competitive game like Rocket League. Then there’s the camera motion, for every frame at 30fps there are two frames at 60fps, so camera motion is clearer and smoother.
Glad I'm not the only one that couldn't get into it. The concept is cool....the controls feel so sloppy.....and I can't really get the ball to go where I want it to. Similar to above, online it was just one guy scoring again and again most of the time....I want to like it, it should be cool, but it just doesn't work that way. Even in practice mode I can't get the ball to go where I want. I feel like I'm fighting the controls rather than playing them.
@DonkeyDiddyKong I bought the game day one so yes I do know what it was like. The graphics were a little blurry in handheld mode but it was great docked.More importantly though the gameplay was perfect. Really can't stand these "lazy" comments like yours, they're completely naive and ignorant. As if the devs are just sitting with their feet up and clicking a few buttons to make it work. Lazy could apply to certain developers not releasing their games on Switch due to it being too difficult to port. Even then though that would more often than not be a business decision taken, as the extra effort and resources needed might mean their game ends up not being profitable.
"I bloody hate fanboys!"
You know what I hate, miserable negative gits, they're the absolute worst. I'd rather go to the dentist for a tooth out than spend 10 minutes in the company of one.
Online game is golden with this one. Good doing updating the graphics.
And I just got this yesterday! So convenient!
