Just as the SXSW Gaming panel was closing, Sega had time for one final tease:
The only information given out is that it is 'not a sequel to any of the previous Sonic games'. That means that despite that very familiar R it is not a Sonic R remake (because there is definitely a car in there) or a new All-Star Racing sequel is in the cards. We will hopefully find out more about this title on March 22nd or at the very least when E3 2018 comes around. More importantly: we'll know if there's a Nintendo Switch version of this mysterious game.
Any guesses, lovely NL readers? Drop your best theories in the comments section below.

Calling it right now: Sonic x Ridge Racer
Where the hell did March 22 come from exactly?
@YummyHappyPills From https://youtu.be/Np-7AZkoq1g?t=5m24s
It's the Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega Rally crossover everyone has been asking for.. minus Sonic the Hedgehog.
yawn The only way SEGA can excite me these days is if they announce a sequel to the Rub Rabbits games.
@YummyHappyPills My thoughts exactly!
You wrote an article about this but not about the sonic mania physical collectors edition?
Maybe not an official sequel to R, but i’d love to see another Sonic foot racing game. The best they’ve done with the concept so far is that one mode in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, but it practically makes itself.
It's pretty easy to read "Racing" in the logo.
I'd have preferred a Sonic R sequel
This news is a tad late, my lovely dudes.
Alrighty! I'm intrigued, but not excited. A mix between foot racing and car racing would be enticing. They could pull it off.
Where's Shenmue HD?
Can you feel the sunshine?
Everybody's super sonic racing!
@Aurumonado They're probably getting around to it. But still, they could've reported on all this Friday when it was announced.
Dang, I hate to be "that guy"...
This tease would had make more sense if it was for a new Daytona or Sega Rally game. It doesn't make sense to tease realistic car and then had it be Sonic related.
Very interesting. I could use a good Sega racing game on my Switch.
The "R" stands for Robotnik. The game is about Robotnik!!!!...........Or a Sonic game for adults.
“The only information given out it that this was that it is”
~ Nintendo Life, 2018
You guys have missed a lot of things...
@Aurumonado Please come around later at... 00:05.
@AdReNaLiNFaLc0n: I think NL purposely makes grammar errors, as a game for the readers to spot; especially, the regulars.
@Everyone_Else: I rarely expected news on a Sunday afternoon, although it is around 8:40pm GMT UK time. So, early start to the new week ahead (of us).
It’s sega rally
Yusss, looks like it could be the game Sonic Drift was always meant to be.
As long as it is at least as good as All-Stars Racing Transformed, I'm in.
Ugh, can we not have another kart/car sim racer? The racing genre is oversaturated with them and they all feel really samey. Rather see another Riders or R game, there really aren't many (if any) games like those on the market. Riders especially was really fun.
It'll be a Nintendo Switch exclusive, it'll be a crossover and it'll be called
Sonic: Heroes Two F-Zero's
I really enjoyed Sonic R back on the Saturn and would much prefer a return to that style of racing game for Sonic, particularly as it always seemed to be a better fit than those characters racing in Karts
If it's anything like Mad Dash Racing, I'd be all for it. But I doubt Sega has the capacity to make such an engaging racing game. Like... ALL the Sonic characters are able to run at phenomenal speeds, even if they're not as fast as Sonic himself. Why would they even NEED vehicles at all!?
Jeez - this was 24 hours ago!
After being burned again by Sonic Forces, I’ll hold my excitement until after it’s released.
@ItalianBaptist I completely agree with you, a new Sonic R with modern technology could easily this generations Fast RMX/Wipeout. An Fzero foot race!!
@norwichred You'll have to forgive us for having weekend off. It's terrible, I know.
@Shiryu I'll see your Sonic x Ridge Racer and raise you a Metropolis Street Racer (with Sonic the Hedgehog air fresheners!)
@GrailUK I love Rad Mobile so much. One of many Sega super scaler arcades that blew my mind when I was a kid.
@samuelvictor BTW, him saying he's not involved has zero bearing on this, as TT hasn't been involved with Sonic games for decades - Sumo is Sega's go-to studio when it comes to racing titles these days, and Sega owns all associated Sonic brands, including Sonic R — TT has no ownership whatsoever.
Having said that, it does seem odd that they're pushing the 'R' angle yet there's clearly a car in that trailer. I wonder if that's because this new game fuses driving with running?
@Damo Sonic and his buddies shouldn't need a car so maybe they will be on foot while characters like Eggman and other Sega fan favourites such as Ryo Hazuki, Gilius Thunderhead and Danica Patrick will be in vehicles. If that's the case though what's to stop Danica Patrick turning Sonic into roadkill?
@damo ah I didn’t realise you had the weekends off. No need to visit the site and give you the clicks over the weekends any more then. One less site to browse.
The news was actually announced on Friday btw and I thought today was the weekend. Perhaps it’s not in your neck of the woods.
There was a new release of sonic mania announced with a physical version and an upgrade for digital owners. That might be of interest to some readers who haven’t already read it too.
@Damo But this was revealed during the week, on Friday. And if you do take the weekend off, why post it now, on Sunday night instead of waiting until Monday morning since the timegap wouldn't have been significant? If you took the weekend off but wanted to post this article during that time-period anyway, why wouldn't you post it earlier, on Saturday? I don't mean to be overly critical, but I do find it a bit confusing.
R for :
Remake
Remaster
Revolution
Retouched
Rally
Revival
Revenge
Roasted
Rolling
RAM
Redux
It's clear the R is for "racing". You can see the N and the G plain as day on the end there. Pretty exciting!
Sonic R HD
@SpacemanSpiff Heck, you can see the A and the C clearly too!
@Darkhound1999 @norwichred The event took place in the late evening on Friday, UK time.
Permission to sleep, sir?
@samuelvictor Yep she's since made guest appearances in Yakuza 6,Total War: Warhammer 2 and Football Manager 2018. She's as much Sega as Joe Musashi.
Nah I seriously doubt we'll be seeing her again in a Sonic Racing game. Her debut didn't sit well with many Sega fans.
The fact that they would use that R this way and not have it tied to or related to Sonic R seems par the course with modern Sega/Sonic Team: If it's not their overuse of memes carrying their PR, it's their abuse of nostalgia.
That's not to say the final products arent sometimes good, but it doesnt bode well with showing confidence in their products.
And on a side note: I find it interesting that quite a lot of Sonic's reveals and marketing is geared more towards a Western audience instead of Japanese.
@Shiryu
This is probably a small nitpick, but the event is called "SXSW" (South by Southwest), not "SWS".
Calling it right now also....sonic match 3 game.
Well here's an idea. What if the cars in Sonic R were powered by foot, just like the cars in the Flinstones
I put my money at on a racing game. In fact I’ll be shocked if it isn’t. Not a bad thing!
They are buying Toys R and now will be called Sonic R Us.
@OdnetninAges Thanks for the heads up. I wrote this up late on Friday and the letters somehow looked Ok to me at the time.
I really enjoyed All Star racing so I'm bummed it's not a sequel to that. if it's any kind of racing sim I have zero interest. but for now I'm curious
Sequel to Sonic Q
@samuelvictor Never thought of it like that, could be on to something there.
The Joe Montana games were great. I had the original on Master System and then later Sports Talk on Megadrive. They actually got me into watching real American Football, although that didn't last long. Its funny to think that the original Joe Montana on Megadrive was developed by EA, released 1 month after the original Madden and actually had stuff removed from it before release as it was supposed to be better than their own game. Not a chance EA were going to let that happen.
Obviously Sonic is joining Team Rocket. Just throwing that out there.
Of course Switch is not guaranteed like the other consoles so we can’t get too excited now.
It's a Pen Pen Tricelon sequel.
A Sonic R sequel would have been an instant buy for me. Maybe the soundtrack will be composed of love songs again, at least?
If the trailer shows Sega digging deep into the Sonic catalog, I'll be interested again. I want to play Chaos, Blaze, and Gemerl, please.
Please come to Switch!
Well, the title is clearly _____ RACING. Sonic Racing?
Ugh.
The Transformed series has been awesome. Bummer.
I'd much rather have the characters self-propelled than in vehicles.
But I realize All-stars Racing and the Transformed sequel were much more successful than R or Riders ever managed.
Guys, you can make out the word "racing".
Be interesting to see if it's some kind of Sonic R relative. Pretty decent game, even if it makes my Saturn cry.
@Pignot: I'm guessing SONIC RACING as well, with Sonic in the "O"
Honestly, if you look at the "R", you can almost see "Racing" stretch from one end of the emblem (R) to the other ("G").
For the fail: it's Sonic Running. It'll be like Super Mario Run, without being too slow.
