Ojiro "Moppin" Fumoto - best known for the award-winning mobile title Downwell - has joined Nintendo.
Fumoto made the announcement via his Twitter account, and his profile now features the text "Downwell / Nintendo".
While "serious" gamers often look down on smartphone titles, Downwell is one of those rare cases of a mobile game being really good. Despite its simple controls, it delivers one of the most intense and challenging gameplay experiences you can have on a smartphone, and boasts some striking pixel visuals which call to mind the twitch arcade classics of yesteryear. It's since been ported to Windows, PS4 and PS Vita.

This (very roughly) translates as:
I got a job on the Nintendo DS! I'll do my best to
It will be interesting to see how Nintendo uses Fumoto's unique talents, and it's good to know that the company is hiring such fresh talent.
Welcome aboard, Moppin!

So does this mean we might get Downwell on Switch?
Nice!
One of the lucky few.
How about an actually great mobile game that uses Nintendo's IP? Like Ice Climbers or Kid Icarus?
One of my favorite indies, and I’ve actually wondered if it will come to Switch. Interesting news!
Downwell is rad. I'd love to see a Switch port where you can play in tabletop by removing a Joy-Con and standing the system up vertically.
So I'm guessing he will help with Nintendo's mobile games.
Downwell is really good, but I could never get used to the virtual controls. Here’s hoping we get a Switch or 3DS port.
@KoopaTheGamer : Exactly.
I waited over 30 years for Ice Climber HD with online co-op.
In year 2003, i made the concept of Ice Climber online. I got programmer etc. involved too, but it were dragging out too much so we never finished it.
My Ice Climber remake had 4 player co-op and some other new things.
Downwell is one of the best mobile games I’ve ever played.
This game would work well in TATE mode on handheld while controlling it with one attached joycon.
Make it happen.
@nab1 digging it (no pun intended) on Vita, but I can't imagine playing with virtual controls. Then again, I can't imagine it in any action movement-heavy genre, but particularly not in platformers.
Downwell is one of the best indies. Very talented guy. Nintendo is lucky to have him
Downwell works great on a phone (or tablet). Literally only three inputs: tap left, tap middle, tap right. Great game, genius in its simplicity, and I can see why Nintendo would want Moppin on board. I wouldn't bother waiting for a Switch port, as the ones that are already out there are fine as is. I'm really bad at the game though!
@Robotron2084 It will be a nice, long toilet break, believe me.
''I got a job on the Nintendo DS'' ........That was weird
Downwell is excellent - well, at least when you run it with physical controls. I guess, it works otherwise as well, but it's definitely a game that thrives of tactile controls.
Anyways, good for him and good for Nintendo. I'm curious to see if he'll have a project of his own. I still think Nintendo should try to hire the team behind Golf Story though
@Bananaman678 Ooh I didn't think about that! That would rock!
I played it on the PS4 (cross-buy with Vita) because it was free with PS Plus. It's actually a lot better of a game than I expected. The creator joining Nintendo can't be a bad thing.
I got this on PS4 and Mobile, Such an amazing game. Would def triple dip for a Switch version
Can't say I've ever even heard of this game until now.
congrats dude!
Downwell was fantastic. That's all I got.
@Robotron2084 yeah I'd definitely recommend the game. It's dirt cheap as well, only costing $3 on pc and ios. It's an incredibly fun game and honest provides more fun than games that cost 3 to 5 times as much
Can't believe Google Translate is still supporting the Nintendo DS. It should be focusing all its translating efforts on the Switch.
Love Downwell, but there is no need to disparage mobile games by isolating it as a rare case of a really good mobile game. There are loads of really good games on mobile of many types, just like every other platform. I think we can stop with the mobile prejudice.
Anyway, interested to see what this brings, wonder if the success of Snipperclips (and top Switch indies) has emboldened Nintendo to look for an exclusive breakout. Could be a valuable feather in the cap.
Of course he could be hired to simply join the development pipeline as well, in which case it's an exciting hire and shows Nintendo looking for young talent.
"任天堂に就職しました!がんばるぞ〜"
Google Translation: "I got a job at Nintendo! I will hang on~"
Bing Translation: "I got a job with Nintendo! Let's do it!"
Don't know where you got "DS" from
This is great news for Nintendo. Downwell was an excellent platformer on PS4 and Vita as well. It just felt great, in the same way Spelunky HD just nailed the feel.
But I wonder what happens now to his contribution to UFO 50–the collection of 50 mini NES-type games by 5 different indies, including Mr Fumuto.
@arpaktiko Google Translate says "I got a job at Nintendo! I will hang on".
Come ooooon "Downpipe", the Mushroom Kingdom version of Downwell about Wario battling his way down pipes for treasure What? I can dream!
Now I don't say this lightly. I mean, I often say that a pixel game looks 'cool' because I like the style but...the graphics in that game are compare favourably to anything that Ultimate produced on the Spectrum. Brilliant.
Oh Congrats! I love Downwell! I hope it now comes out on 3DS and Switch!
Eh, Nintendo DS is dead for years!
