The Media Creates figures for week three of January 2018 are in, and they show another strong set of performances for Nintendo Switch in the East. Nine games in the top 20 are on Nintendo's latest platform with Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle continuing to show cross-market appeal as it grabs the number one slot.
Splatoon 2 (3), Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (4), Super Mario Odyssey (7) and The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild (10) all held strong in the top 10 when it came to Switch titles, while Pokémon Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon (8) and Mario Party: The Top 100 (9) prove 3DS still has plenty of fans in Japan. The Famitsu charts also saw Mario + Rabbids on top with 14 out of 30 of the charted titles on Nintendo Switch.
Hardware wise, PS4 outperformed Switch to take the number one slot on both charts, but the Nintendo hybrid console still racked up 43,027 units sold, while the collective 3DS family sold a total of 12, 115 according to the Media Creates figures.
Nintendo Switch is still continuing to perform in Japan, and the launch of Mario + Rabbids is obviously helping a great deal. Let us know what you think of these new figures in the comments section below...

Hardware Sales(last week's sales in brackets)
Switch – 43,027 (37,500)
PS4 – 37,572 (32,890)
PS4 Pro – 14,935 (10,918)
New 2DS LL – 7,302 (9,929)
Vita – 4,256 (4,388)
New 3DS LL – 3,563 (5,270)
Xbox One X – 1,285 (6)
2DS – 1,250 (1,656)
Xbox One – 103 (107)
Impressive. Glad the Switch has legs in terms of software, as well. Hopefully more developers take note of that.
People love those Rabbids!
Fantastic little strategy game, who knew you could make XCOM cute?
Anyone have insight into what's driving the PS4 resurgence? Seems like Switch topped hardware for the last 8 months straight but maybe I am overlooking.
@giantenemycrab Possibly people getting ready for Monster Hunter World. It could be why XB1X sales spiked this week as well. Next week could see mental numbers.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Thanks for posting. It’s much better included in the article.
So happy to hear about Mario+Rabbids. Probably my 2nd favorite Switch game. SO GOOD.
Did Mario + Rabbids just come out in Japan? Why does it say new for total sales?
@giantenemycrab The Switch sales dropped significantly. Maybe there are stock shortage issues again.
@Agent721 Yes, it released in Japan last week.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Thanks I forgot about the MH behemoth.
@Agent721 It just came out in Japan, that's why it has new beside it. Its total sales would be its debut sales.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Dang...very late release! Wonder what the hold up was?
Ubisoft needs to do stuff like this more often.
Those ARMS and Pokken figures are edging towards respectability now. I'm still gobsmacked by Splatoon 2's sales in Japan. Likely to hit 2m within the next couple of weeks or so.
Nice work for Ubisoft, though. Knew Mario + Rabbids would do well over there, but that's still a nice debut for a new strategy title.
@Agent721 They needed to translate the voice acting to japanese, duh!
@Dom Any reason for skipping the previous Media Create sales?
Please stop, we can't take all this winning, Nintendo.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Thanks for posting. @Dom Is there a reason why NL is no longer posting these figures?
@Devlind
Thanks Captain Obvious, but that could’ve been done much earlier.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I think the old way worked better, so thanks for posting this.
@Agent721 They needed to learn japanese, duh!
Nintendo really needs to ramp up Switch stock in Japan. Maybe not right now with the typical January hardware sales lull and Monster Hunter World incoming, but certainly by March when Kirby Star Allies is released.
BTW the best-selling Rabbids game is Rayman Raving Rabbids with 14,000 copies sold LTD. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle has already surpassed that by a huge margin in just 1 week.
Mario + Rabbids is also the fastest-selling console strategy game ever in Japan. XCOM never really made much of a dent.
@NinNin Someone on NintendoEverything was saying this morning that there are supply constraints for the Switch AND PS4 right now.
I don't really like to hear that.
Switch need More supplies to kick PS4 Butt again.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Thank you, that article is almost pointless without them also copying and pasting the numbers.
@NinNin We've been very busy with Labo coverage and other bigger articles on NL. Don't worry, we'll try to cover them as and when we can.
Mario + Rabbids is a Japanese game that was accidentally made by Italians .
Monster Hunter World + no big Switch releases for a minute means PS4 is gonna massively crush Switch for about a month, after this week. Gonna have to put up with the loud and recharged Nintendoomers for awhile.
@Dom The headline says "Mario + Rabbits", instead of Rabbids.
It's nice to see M+R is enjoying so much success. It's an unexpectedly fantastic game, and one of the best exclusives on the system so far.
Those Switch sales cratered after Christmas, though. Lack of supply or just the lack of any big releases to drive sales?
I'm really impress all things consider, PS4 this month has Dissidia FF, Dragon Ball FighterZ and MH World plus almost all the indies that got release on Switch. It also has Iconoclasts, a game I'll buy on Vita; so this is all very impressive holds.
Oh also the real winner is the Xbox X. I mean it pass the thousand sells and beat up the 2DS. Lol!
Switch – 43,027 (37,500)
PlayStation 4 – 37,572 (32,890)
PlayStation 4 Pro – 14,935 (10,918)
New 2DS LL – 7,302 (9,929)
PlayStation Vita – 4,256 (4,388)
New 3DS LL – 3,563 (5,270)
Xbox One X – 1,285 (6)
2DS – 1,250 (1,656)
Xbox One – 103 (107)
@Krull Splatoon 2 already pass the 2m sales that is if you count digital. But I think on physical alone will reach 2m which is even more impressive.
@Dom Thanks for the explanation.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Is Media Create not tracking Wii U sales anymore?
@LegendOfPokemon No, I think they stopped a couple of weeks ago. The thing is, generally Wii U sales are comparable to XB1.
I bet Davide Solani is crying right now.
@JJ286 Iconoblasts looks like an amazing game. Reminds me of Metroid and a little bit of SteamWorld Dig. I'd love for that to come to Switch. The developer had previously stated that they'd concentrate on PC and PS4 when asked about a Switch port. Now that the game has just come out, I've asked them will they now make a Switch version. I haven't got an answer yet.
1st party, 1st party, 1st party, 1st party....
Soon, the Switch's 3rd party situation will mirror Wii Us. What is the deal with the Nintendo gamer and 3rd parties?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE That certainly explains the PS4 spike in sales. It doesn't really work for the XboxX sales unless they plan on importing the game/purchase digitally from a foreign store. MH:W is exclusive to PS4 in Japan.
@Ernest_The_Crab It'll be available digitally I believe on the Microsoft shop and has some support for Japanese.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE thank you for posting the full numbers! I will never understand why this website doesn’t post the chart along with the article, it cannot be that much extra effort. On top of that this used to be a chart they would post in full so this change is even more annoying.
@Ernest_The_Crab All those X1X sales in Japan are probably to US military personnel stationed there (currently 39,000) who will buy the US version of MHW.
@gatorboi352 Well notably... there's not a single notable recent third party release recently in Japan? The only two third part titles at all in the last two months are the train wreck WWE 2K18, a Shogi (board game) title, and a licensed game aimed at kids. What titles would people still be buying in that amount? Ports just don't have the legs for long sales, and even stuff like Doom isn't releasing there until later this year. Most of the major third party titles there were launch ones.
I like potatoes 🥔
@Ernest_The_Crab Asian XB1 version of MHW supports Japanese language. People will import
M+R should reach at least 250k in Japan which would be fantastic
Mario + Rabbids is my favorite exclusive game on the Switch.
"Mario + Rabbits" Unbelievable...
I see "Knight Knight" from the indies article still hasn't been fixed either.
@QwertyQwerty That title is so Obe1 I can't even lol. He used to make brilliant content until he reached 10K. After that he became clickbait-y and so far the still hasn't changed..
"Mario + Rabbits" is the Japanese title?
@gatorboi352 Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and Pokken Tournament DX are third-party games.
@Agent721 Yep new release for Japan.
MH World is releasing on Friday.
Expect higher PS4 sales and even X1 sales, and lower Switch numbers for the next 2 weeks or so.
Switch should pick up a little after that, but I don't expect any real surges until Kirby, tbh...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I think I would doble dip if it comes to Switch.
Btw, read this: http://reg.gdconf.com/GDC-State-of-Game-Industry-2018?kcode=BNRGDCSLDR
About 480 developers are working on Switch right now. So we should get some really cool third parties.
@QwertyQwerty lol the burns in the comment section would have been hilarious.
@gatorboi352 I don't think so. Right now 480 developers are doing games for Switch.
Read: http://reg.gdconf.com/GDC-State-of-Game-Industry-2018?kcode=BNRGDCSLDR
@justin233 same here, specially with cheese.
Terrific result for a third-party game. Decent numbers for Switch, PS4 numbers will be huge next week.
Good for Ubisoft. Still though they would have done a bit better with Mario on the cover and the install base.
Not surprised on PS4 hardware leading the way. Hard to keep switch sales up with the same old games that Came out months ago.
@Agramonte
Switch is practically out of stock nationwide and the PS4's biggest game is coming out in a few days. I'd be concerned if the PS4 wasn't outperforming the Switch under those conditions.
There's a reason why the Switch's "old" games are outselling most of PS4's "new" games; the product is in high demand but is constrained by very low supply.
@gatorboi352 http://www.nintendo.co.uk/News/2018/January/Take-a-look-at-the-30-most-downloaded-Nintendo-eShop-games-on-Nintendo-Switch-of-2017--1332939.html
21 out of 30 are third party. Or do we only count retail sales? What is the deal with Playstation gamers in Japan not buying FIFA?
@westman98 Again? What's your source?
@JJ286 I already posted that a few hours ago.

@NinNin
Famistu via https://sites.google.com/site/gamedatalibrary/
@gortsi
Some don't understand the difference between "not selling" and "not among the top-selling." Because of course the Switch's 1st party game sales will dominate its 3rd party games sales; I'd be concerned if otherwise.
@westman98 they also tend to overlook the fact that many developers have actually said that the Switch version of their games is selling best out of all sku's. Oh well, there's a narrative so everything needs to fit into that
@gortsi
To be fair, most of the multiplatform games that sell better on Switch are indie games, which I guess "don't count". Fitting the narrative indeed.
But even when referring specifically to AAA 3rd party games, the marketplace for the AAA 3rd party software on Switch doesn't come anywhere close to resembling that of the Wii U.
Sure, the marketplace for the AAA 3rd party software on Switch is nowhere near that of the PS4/XBO/Steam, but nobody in their right mind expects it to be. I guess some just aren't in their right mind...
I'm not excited. Mario and Rabbits failed to spike Switch sales. 60k debut for a game starting Mario isn't that great. Fact is that PS4 is outperforming Switch again. MH is huge in Japan, and is there any system seller on the horizon? Pokemon and Animal Crossing are like a year away
Kingdom Battle deserves to have incredible success. Absolutely a phenomenal game IMO. 60+ hours into it and I just can't get enough.
@Biff_ARMStrong It's my favorite Switch game too. BotW and SMO are incredible, but against all odds I fell in love with the Rabbids.
@gatorboi352 The Nintendo gamer hasn't seen the light yet, obviously. Maintain your zealous evangelism until they all do.
@jimmyspades, seen the light about what? If all of you are so ps4 friendly, then you shouldn't be on this site. Nintendo always surprise people and by the end of 2018 then you will see the light.
@ekwcll I see the ironic tone I intended didn't come through. Look at my recent comments to gatorboi to see my non-ironic thoughts on his attitude.
Dude, I love Mario+Rabbids! Glad to see it succeed.
Totally excited for the upcoming Donkey Kong DLC!
@JimmySpades is this a first? Should you consider it an upgrade, being accused of PlayStation fanboyism?
@gortsi It is a first, and while I wouldn't say the accusation of Sony fanboyism is significantly different than the Nintendo variety, I do consider it an achievement that I've now been accused for two separate consoles. Next up: being told I'm an arrogant member of the PC Master Race.
Dear Nintendo Life, I do know a little Microsoft Excel and I recently learnt to create tables with text. Can i help with the presentation of the charts?
Really, really happy for Rabbids being a must-buy. The guys at Ubisoft Milan did a WONDERFUL job... I'm Italian and I'm really proud of them!
That figures, it's a fantastic XCOM game and great fun to play, if not a little too easy.
@dimi The only reason PS4 is outselling the Switch, is because Switch is sold out in Japan. If Nintendo was able to ship more, the Switch would have sold more.
@JimmySpades Don't let these console peasants get to you.
