It's the middle of the week, which means it's time for the Media Create charts out of Japan. The previous week saw Super Mario Odyssey hit around half a million sales at launch, the figure varying depending on whether you prefer Media Create or Famitsu numbers.
Starting with the software chart this week, Mario's adventure has been toppled from the number one spot by the PS4 version of Call of Duty: WWII, but nevertheless returned sales numbers in six figures in its second week. Style Savvy: Styling Star made its debut on 3DS in fourth place, which isn't bad but doesn't exactly set the charts alight. The results are below with lifetime sales in brackets.
- [PS4] Call of Duty: WWII (SIE, 11/03/17) – 168,234 (New)
- [NSW] Super Mario Odyssey (Nintendo, 10/27/17) – 116,931 (578,969)
- [PS4] .hack//G.U. Last Recode (Limited Edition Included) (Bandai Namco, 11/02/17) – 61,816 (New)
- [3DS] Style Savvy: Styling Star (Nintendo, 11/03/17) – 32,176 (New)

- [PS4] ARK: Survival Evolved (Spike Chunsoft, 10/26/17) – 23,370 (93,547)
- [PS4] Assassin’s Creed Origins (Ubisoft, 10/27/17) – 22,272 (71,692)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04,28,17) – 15,913 (788,445)

- [PS4] Taiko Drum Master: Drum Session (Bundle Edition Included) (Bandai Namco, 10/26/17) – 7,679 (35,924)
- [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Limited Edition Included) (Nintendo, 03/03/17) – 6,662 (629,352)
- [PS4] The Evil Within 2 (Bethesda Softworks, 10/19/17) – 5,809 (61,374)
- [NSW] Pokken Tournament DX (Nintendo, 09/22/17) – 4,882 (111,829)
- [PS4] Itadaki Street: Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary (Square Enix, 10/19/17) – 4,858 (56,520)
- [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf Amiibo+ (Nintendo, 11/23/16) – 4,008 (264,236)
- [PS4] City Shrouded in Shadow (Bandai Namco, 10/19/17) – 3,511 (60,563)
- [PS4] Middle-earth: Shadow of War (Warner Bros., 10/12/17) – 3,367 (37,462)
- [3DS] Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions (Nintendo, 10/05/17) – 3,171 (49,746)
- [3DS] Idol Time PriPara: Yume All-Star Live! (Takara Tomy A.R.T.S, 10/26/17) – 3,080 (17,965)
Moving on to hardware, the major Switch bump driven by Odyssey bundles fell away, but the system is still way out from its rivals as the best seller. New 2DS LL and New 3DS LL (XL) also delivered increases in their customary third and fourth places.
- Switch – 64,387 (126,701)
- PlayStation 4 – 21,830 (18,719)
- New 2DS LL – 11,116 (9,203)
- New 3DS LL – 7,914 (6,448)
- PlayStation 4 Pro – 6,993 (5,934)
- PlayStation Vita – 3,576 (3,705)
- 2DS – 1,539 (1,412)
- New 3DS – 287 (220)
- Xbox One – 114 (97)
- PlayStation 3 – 56 (45)
- Wii U – 38 (41)
So there you have it, another week with some positive sales results for Nintendo in Japan.

Is it weird that a game about WWII is selling well in Japan?
I am still shocked that World War II can be popular in Japan.. The same in Germany..
@justin233 Not as weird as Wolfenstein selling well in Germany would be.
japan was in ww2 fighting with the germans against the allies, it aint that weird
I HATE that stupid nsfw shooting games !!!
So there are still Xbox one and Wii U hardware sales? Wow.
Super Mario Odyssey has stolen Splatoon 2's title as the best-selling non-new release. Still has some way to go to match those sales, though! Those Pokken sales are starting to look pretty respectable too, given the fact it's a re-release of a 1v1 fighter, which is up there with 2D platformers as probably the best-served genre on Switch.
@Anti-Matter Really? I never would've guessed...
Look at the Switch beating the crap out of the venerable 3DS and PS4.
Who would've thunk it? (not Capcom)
I'm making Splatoon 2 my defacto game delineator for Japan. If you sell more than Splatoon 2 there, you had an ok week. 4 games in Japan this week ahead of S2, 3 of those were new. Splatoon has legs, 8 of them. Everybody needs a benchmark.
Splatoon 2 is the only game in the top 20 w/ over 1 million sales. Though Animal Crossing New Leaf would be there but they are counting Amiibo + as it's own game, not adding it to the nearly 5m sales of the original.
Glad to see Switch shortages are a thing of the past. I'm surprised the Japanese really like Call of Duty.
@Octane
Well, duh...
I have ever explained what i hate most, right ?
Btw, off topic. I found Yonder : The Cloud Catcher Chronicles PS4 was the OPPOSITE of that stupid nsfw war games. I play that 100% Peaceful game, Counterpart with those gamers that adore War and Weapons. I am Yang when they are Yin.
@Anti-Matter Have you ever played Flower? I think you’d enjoy it.
38 Wii Us?!
Also, Splatoon 2 is doing fantastic.
@justin233 I know what you mean but Metal Gear Solid 3 and other games that depict the Cold War and even Vietnam – a war America lost – seem to do fine in the USA.
Honestly I suspect a reversal next week. I could be wrong but I would bet on Odyssey retaking the top spot next week.
@admwllms That’s true. I loved MGS3 - it’s my favorite in the series. Man, now I want to play through the series again.
@Anti-Matter you sound like a peaceful guy
@justin233 me too. To be honest I didn't get into the series until the 3DS port of 3 and loved it so much I couldn't believe I'd never got around to playing the others.
All this talk of CoD WWII in the gaming press is making me want to play a shooter; with Doom coming out on Switch in 2 Days...
Maybe its time for me to tear out some demonic spinal columns.
Are we able to shove shotgun barrels down their throats?
Good software sales for Sony......even a few non new games still in top 20. I assume SMO, Splatoon 2 and Zelda will stay in top 20 until January
Well, CODWW2 also had the top spot in the UK (any day now NL?). Not played a COD since the one where you run out an exploding ship at the very start.
Maybe time to go back.
Nintendo branded consoles sold 85,278 units out of a grand total of 117,850 consoles sold or a 72% share of the entire market.
#Nintendodomination.
CoD has a niche but dedicated fanbase in Japan.
I still distinctly remember the Normandy Landing Missions in Medal of Honour: Allied Assault and Call of Duty 2; wonder how it compares to CoD WWII.
Also am I correct to assume that Gibraltar only appears as a multiplayer map?
Who would have thought the fat plumber would have been knocked of top spot after 2nd weekend by a cod game in Japan. I dislike cod but hate the plumber more, good sales for switch though
@Chandlero Actually, it’s not weird. German people don't associated themselves with Nazi ideology or ideologies from that time period, so consuming media or entertainment depicting Nazies in a negative light isn’t offensive to them. And rightfully so. It’s similar to how Americans don’t associate themselves with sins of the past, like slavery. And last I checked, Americans have no issues consuming media depicting the civil war and slavery in a negative light.
@Si2k78: I have a problem playing virtual WWII battles, knowing that my grandfather fought them in real and lost most of his family there.
I just want to know why are 38 people buying a Wii U?
I love Xbox, but I feel like it's the American version of Sega Saturn because of the way it's selling in Japan.
A few great games that will be over priced on Japan's eBay.
@Wayoh2002 Two million people bought SNES mini so i think it shouldn't surprise as so much if 40 people each week want to purchase a legacy console with decent games like Wii U.
@Si2k78 I would say due to the amount of censorship still put upon games pertaining to that time period, there's quite a bit of association still existing. It would be like American's censoring the word slaves and replacing it with "forced laborers". If they really felt it was a different time with people completely unrelated to present-day Germany, I do not see a reason to censor things such as Nazi symbols from games.
@Anti-Matter You gotta chill just a bit man. We know you don't like violent games but you don't need to announce it on every article in which one is mentioned. People are allowed to like different games.
Weird how a WWII game is the best selling in Japan. I guess Sony being the one published it there has something to do with it.
Hopefully next year's Call of Duty will be on Switch. But even if it's not, looks like enough developers will be dumping games on the system by then that we probably won't even notice.
@justin233 thought the same thing
It's impressive numbers to be sure. Mario ahead of the pack, but Splatoon, Mario Kart and BotW all still in the top 15.
@Anti-Matter
It's ok, you can still enjoy Mario while other people enjoy other games.
Will be interesting to see how well Super Mario Odyssey sells in the long run considering the 3D Mario platformers don't traditionally do as well in Japan as the 2D ones. Odyssey is still exceptional and it'd be nice to see it hit at least 1 mil.
