Universal’s new Dark Universe kicked off this summer with a new reboot of The Mummy, and, well, it didn’t go over all that great. Even so, the company remains committed to expanding the new universe with new movies and other related media in the future, and one notable piece of that is the upcoming video game, The Mummy Demastered. Designed by WayForward—of Shantae fame—the new game is a 2D Metroidvania and it’s looking pretty good.
WayForward just posted a short teaser trailer of the game, showing off various creepy environments and the monsters that inhabit them. The animation work looks especially smooth, and given WayForward’s pedigree, this will certainly be one to keep an eye on. Check it out:

Looks interesting. The trailer seems to me like Alien the game on Snes. Keep it on my radar.
Second. And cool, more way forward is always good
Looks awesome, they had my interest at metroidvania. 😊
The original announcement didn't really grab my attention, but this clip has definitely put the game on my radar.
Oh, I forgot about this! Good thing it’s still coming.
Looks good, reminds me of Metroid Zero Mission.
Looks pretty neat
The movie was blows raspberry but this game is looking really good. They definitely picked the right team for the job.
Holy hell do I want this
I am a simple man.
I see "Wayforward" I am interested
More Indie retro. Looking at the eshop you think my Switch is a gameboy Advance.
This could be a bigger hit than the movie.
@Agramonte True and it's kinda a good thing for those who play on the go. For home I'm currently playing Mario+Rabbids but while out I play League of Evil. Great variety for a hybrid. Looking forward to this as well.
It looks alright. Reminds me of a mix between Metroid and Contra.
Looks awesome! Can't wait 😊
Looks good, but (and I never thought I’d say this) I’m also growing a bit tired of pixelated indie games. The gameplay itself seems pretty cool though, and the animation is beautiful. Plus, WayForward.
SOLD!
Looks cool. I keep my eye on this
Looks awesome
Awesome- I thought the game was dead. Looks great!!
I would love a new Mighty Switch Force. I loved those skilful puzzle platforming mechanics.
This looks like it could be good too. It's certainly in good hands.
Think I’m getting a little bit tired of the whole 8-bit upgraded look. Starting to bore me a bit. Looks pretty good otherwise
@Mr_Pepperami
Eh, its more a 32-bit era console looking 2D game tbh. The SNES or Genesis couldn't do a platformer that looked this good.
Needs Rick (not Nick) as a playable character.
Contravania. Cool.
Wouldn't have surprised me if they'd canceled this game after the lacklustre reception and box office of the movie. Glad they didn't, because this looks really good!
Some of their best pixel work there
@Agramonte I like the "retro garbage" but your comment is still a good one
Looks a bit like a remastered Ghost N Goblins (and with cooler weapons). This trailer earns an A+.
Reminds me of Aliens Infestation a bit, probably because it's another movie-based metroidvania by them. I'm already on board.
I think there are a lot of new developers and designers popping up these days too that were inspired by the retro gaming era and want to make games based on the styles that were present at the time. Just as on the flip side there are those who want to continue to expand the scene and develop new and interesting graphics and technologies for their games. It's pretty evident with the list of games releasing lately.
Personally I think this looks awesome graphically but I'm not sure if the gameplay is something I'm interested in or not at the moment.
Edit: Not to say that all that are interested in producing retro graphics are new to the scene. I'm sure there are some hardened veterans out there who want to revisit and revitalize the retro look and feel too.
Actually looks like it could be pretty dang good. Although, seriously Universal, it's so far away from what I would imagine a Mummy themed movie/game would look like that it's just weird. What have you done with you beloved monster franchises, Universal?
Wayforward are my fav indie dev. Looking forward to this.
When can I play this? WHEN?!
I wonder if the licence will actually hurt this game, considering how the movie was panned.
Looking good indeed!
@TomekKowal Loved it! I'm stealing it!
Looks interesting
Another day one for me! Looks like I have to get rid of my Switch!!
Is there DLC where you play as Boris Carlof?
@TurboTEF nah it’s more pixelated than those games were. Games from that era were a lot smoother looking. That’s why I put 8-bit upgraded not just 8-bit as it clearly is better than that. Still bored of that look though. If it looked more 32 bit or even snes like I’d be more into it than I currently am. Seems a bit ‘me too’ in its looks.
This looks tremendous, can't wait!
Oooh I had no idea that this was Switch bound. I'm going to wait for this version instead. Looks ace and should work like a charm on the go!
Getting serious Turrican vibes from this. Looks pretty cool. Though how will I ever play a Metroidvania without Samus Returns' free aiming? It's game-changing (pun intended).
@Mr_Pepperami That's because all we had back then were fuzzy CRT TVs. Do a side by side with this next to the original Contra and you'll see a huge difference. There's no way the NES could have produced these visuals. The color palette was far too limited. This looks more like something you'd see on the Saturn (compare to Astal or the original Rayman).
Oh my, I didn't even know this was a thing. Looks awesome, very metroidvania esque.
@jwfurness I know the nes couldn’t do anything close to this. Was trying to say that in the word upgraded in both my comments but it’s been lost in translation. I meant that’s it’s gone for the pixelated look of the nes but with much improved textures and colours. Rayman etc don’t really have pixel like sprites. Would say they look more animated or hand drawn. That’s what I meant. But either way the point is I’m tired of this look on indie games as it’s been done to DEATH. The market is getting flooded now and people will get to a point where they stop buying due to fatigue
@Mr_Pepperami The NES and Saturn output pretty much the same native resolution (256 x 240 vs. 320 x 240). I agree, many 32bit games looked better due to improved color palette and more fluid animation, which I think this game also nails. As far as the market for pixel art is concerned, I don't know that we'll ever reach the saturation point because it holds up so well and provides a more cost-effective entry point for small indies.
Reminds me of the brilliant Aliens Infestation on the DS.
@jwfurness there is a saturation point for everything if it’s abused enough. Hey if this looked like turrican or pilotwings or even donkey Kong country I’d probably not have that much of a problem with it. It just looks like yet another shooter with Metroidvania like properties which it’s being overdone at the moment. We are different people though and everyone has different thresholds. Mine is just about full
Buying!! Awful movie but hopefully great game.
@bluesdance a bit harsh. I changed it. Just sick of waiting for games like wonder boy, Hollow knights, flipping death. Good thing you have something you like for the Switch!
@brandonbwii I hear you. I did persona 5 at home on PS4 and wonder boy on my switch away from home. I like indie games on the Switch for on the go - This is just a bit to "retro" for me.
This looks totally awesome, I love Metroidvania games. I really hope it gets a physical release. Not only for collectability, but due to licensing issues. Sure it'll be available next few years bit eventually it expires, and we have the tragedy of what happened to the great Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. I'd have bought this game without the Mummy tie in.
Looks really sweet! And great music.
Super excited!
Soldier: Mummy Returns
Day 1 hands down.... so so many Metroidvanias to play!
@Dayton311 Metroidvania are the best hands down.
I feel like they may as well rename this “The Mummy Mastered” instead of “demastered” because clearly this game has had more work and care put into it than the movie! It’s looking good but I can’t my say I was expecting anything less from WayForward!
Aliens Infestation by WayForward on DS was a little addictive and under appreciated gem with great characters. Hoping for basically more of the same with the addition of more varied environments. Looking forward to this
The game sure looks cool, pixel meets hand drawn-ish. It looks a bit more "better" than snes or megadrive/genesis could do. But still it's cleaner than those ps1 2d games. The gameplay seems nice too, if only they get the controls solid. Then some memorable scenery and I'm sold.
