The SNES Classic Edition comes out next month, but we've been lucky enough to get our hands on the system early, and as you might imagine we've been tirelessly putting it through its paces to see what all the fuss is about.
Perhaps the biggest selling point of the system is that it includes Star Fox 2, which is being officially released for the first time ever. Prototype ROMs of the game exist online, but they're not the finished article - and our video man Alex has decided to find exactly what makes this "final" version so special.
Will this be your first experience of Star Fox 2? Are you looking forward to getting your grubby paws on your SNES Classic Edition? As ever, we want to know so be sure to leave a comment.

I think it's better off staying unreleased...............
Spoiler alert: it's actually not that good a game. Think Super Mario Bros. Lost Levels
Absolutely beautiful. Can't wait!
@gatorboi352 I love the Lost Levels. It's hard for a game to live up to expectations once the series has evolved. Same issue most had with Lost Levels I think. Had it been released in the West at the same time as Japan, more gamers would have a fondness for it. I expected Starfox 2 to be a SNES game though, not a revamped 16-bit remaster i.e. Sonic Mania.
Sire I'd love to if they stop putting pre-orders up at 2am.. 😒
Slower? Hmm....I don't think so, I think it's just that some emulators run this game a good deal faster than they should, accuracy wise.
Cool. Now if I can only obtain a Super NES Classic 😒
@gatorboi352
That's a good game.
@Nasir ............Yeeeeeaaaaah I'm gonna assume you're a bot, so......buhbai!
@gatorboi352 Fake News. It's possibly the best game in the series.
I'll wait for Switch VC, otherwise it's the only reason I'd spend money on a SNES classic.
Sorry but as I've always maintained, it's hideous! And that framerate? Yikes!
I'll stick to Starfox 64.
I think it looks ace.
Guess I'll wait for the inevitable internet release since we already know the mini will be hard to find.
those 15 fps... :/
Meanwhile absolute chaos regarding US preorders.
I expect that I'll get a lot of hate... but the original Star Fox games have always been easier to admire (in terms of what was accomplished with the resources available) than to actually enjoy.
@Koniec
Come on, it's an SNES game. You can't ask 60 fps from a 16 bit game from the 90's.
Plus, the ROMs that are on internet are quite weird if you play at 60 fps - the game wasn't made to play at those speeds.
@gatorboi352
But Lost Levels is good? Actually challenging levels and secret ones too. Npw if we talk about the original japanese SMB2 where you couldn't continue from the same level after a Game Over screen but instead taken back to the beginning of the world and having to play trough the game EIGHT times to unlock secret levels... those were some serious flaws. But they were fixed in Lost Levels.
As for Star Fox 2, yeah, hasn´t aged that well. More of an interesting experiment that's still worth trying. Never thought Nintendo would ever release this game in any form so I played trough it on an emulator several years ago.
I love the leaked Star Fox 2. It really pushes urgency in its game design with events occurring on the map in mostly real time. Very ambitious. I notice the frame rate is still a bit meh on this finalized version, that's unfortunate.
I never liked the game much. The original Star Fox is much better. It is a shame people these days say it looks terrible and it hasn't aged well, both of which isn't true.
@Luna_110 I know, but its still a pain
@gatorboi352 Cept the original star fox is rubbish
This game was a technical marvel for its time, have some respect people. The original Star Fox games are still fun to this day even with the jagged polygons.
Looks to play better than star fox zero. Lol
Man, still more than a month to wait until I can get my hands on my own SNES Mini. Wish I was a game site...
@Luffymcduck Except the version you played through wasn't optimized/bug fixed, let alone complete, as confirmed by both Nintendo and the original developers themselves, so that experience you had with it, only goes so far in showing you what to expect from the final product.
Ooh... no lock on will be quite difficult to get used to.
But damn! I still want this! I was a fan of the prototype and the fan-"completion" patch, but this really does look like a more complete version. I'm salivating at what little I heard of the now complete soundtrack too!
Doesn't seem like I'll be missing much by not playing this. Still, would buy if it ever was released on the VC. Really missing the VC on Switch.
Can't wait to give it a shot. Seems like its an interesting twist on the formula given then real time aspects, I like the experimental aspect of Star Fox.
Hopefully we'll get it available to the Virtual Console, whenever it finally comes. I'd love the chance to get to play it but I don't like my chances in obtaining SNES Mini.
"Are you looking forward to getting your grubby paws on your SNES Classic Edition?"
IF I ever get my grubby paws on one...
I'll pass. Doesn't look good to me
Looks better than i imagined. Its amazing how much sf64 and especially 0 really came from sf2! Makes me feel better about all the stuff in mode. Games that want out of place but was in fact standard from the snes!
SF2 is probably one of the better SF games.
Star Fox 1 is a masterpiece, i got my snes with it, and a that time, I litterally was in abother world. I finished this game countless times, and I'm planong to continue doing so on the snes mini.
As for Star Fox 2, I finished for the first time, just a few months ago, what seems to be a near completed rom. I could see why the game was killed, maybe for trying to shake the formula a bit too much (the map system). But it also bring a lot lf brillant ideas (transformarions, characters, etc).
Can't wait to play the official final version.
This reminded me how much Star Fox Zero annoyed me. I really didn't like that game. So centered around a failed gimmick. Looking at two screens at the same time was a pain in the neck and made the learning curve too steep and not worthwhile in the end.
I think it looks great, thanks for showing a bit of it Alex. I can see the difference between the leak Rom and this. Looks very exciting to be able to finally play a complete version
If I recall correctly wasn't there multiplayer (in the prototype)?
And yet on the final version in the menu it says only 1P ?
Alex, lock on was introduced a year later in Starfox 64.
And (before Starfox 2) the Walker wasn't an option until Starfox Zero.
@9th_Sage
It's hard to tell how fast it was initially supposed to run without having a physical cartridge from Nintendo. All of the homebrew carts run on gutted FX chip boards and they run at different speeds. The emulators will likely play it faster as this game would have been very taxing in the SNES' hardware therefore causing natural slowdown.
I'm glad they upped the difficulty. The unreleased version was WAY too easy for a Star Fox game.
@SKTTR
I never found multiplayer in the unreleased version but my cart was running on a very early version of the rom.
@manu0
At first I was going to disagree but then I released that the last 2 releases were pretty bad and there aren't that many games in the franchise. I'd personally put it in 4th or 5th.
@NESguy94 Fair enough, I don't mean anything bad to people who create emulators, I'm just inclined to believe that this is the speed it's supposed to run at is all.
@SKTTR They cut it some time before this final version. Dylan Cuthbert gave a reason but I forget what it was (performance I think?). IIRC the version that has it is the ROM you might find floating around usually called the 'alpha' version.
Thanks for the video. I wish I could have gotten a pre-order. If they release this on Switch I'll buy it for sure.
Why can't they just put it on VC, along with the original? I doubt its the major selling point for most buyers.
I still can't get over the fact that Nintendo are officially releasing this. It's a similar feeling to that morning a couple of years ago when I woke up to the news that Earthbound Beginnings was on the VC.
To me this game does not look as much fun as the original. For all the talk about 'free roaming' it seems you just end up with levels inside generic looking battleships, in space shooting missiles or on a planet shooting bases. Nothing looks as good as the levels on the original Star Fox, which might have been on-rails but look infinitely more exciting.
I'm basing this view on what I've seen on YouTube from the leaked ROM or from this video. I hope I'm pleasantly surprised when I get to try out this game fully for myself.
I’m so nervous. I have a EU SNES Mini preordered from Amazon Germany where it said they wouldn’t ship to US... but I never got an error or cancel email since June. I don’t want to order another just in case that gets cancelled last minute... I’m kind of playing it by ear right now. Man I do hope I get one of these though!
They HAD to remove the lock on, that thing was broken and made the game wayyy too easy.
Looking forward to play that.. without the snes mini because it's unobtainable lol
This better get a separate release... 😒
Maybe you only get the lock-on ability under Normal difficulty?
