A short time ago we reported on the news that Bandai Namco’s new VR Zone in Shinjuku, Tokyo would play host to a special Virtual Reality version of Mario Kart Arcade, the company's long-running racing series which is developed in conjunction with Nintendo.
We only caught a glimpse of the game previously, but now more footage has been released, and it all looks rather jolly indeed, with players able to physically hurl weapons at one another using motion-sensing controllers.
It's just a shame that so few people will get to play this unique take on Mario Kart; unless you live in Japan or are planning on visiting soon, it's unlikely that you'll ever experience what it feels like to have a red shell hit you right between the eyeballs.

WOW! I need to play this! But how much does it cost to play?
Things like this could bring back arcades!
Or maybe not...
Could this be a test for Switch VR?
@Pazuzumas No. Switch hasn't got a hope for VR support.
@Menchi187 But what about the patents?

How about Mario Party VR?
Mario + Rabbids VR!
Mario Kart in VR? Blue shells, lightnings, ink in one's face, Rainbow Road? Roll over, Resident Evil 7...
Mario Kart 8.5 ?
@Bunkerneath Just your soul.
Bro lives in Tokyo, made one trip to see him this year, could I afford another?
Wife says: No!
@Anti-Matter Don't you mean 7.9?
Some will get the MK:DD IGN review reference.
I'll be in Japan in October and November on a nice long vacation....you better believe I'm playing VR Mario Kart while I'm there!
This looks awesome!
I'm thinking back to the Nintendo VR pattend for the switchthat was featured in an article on Nintendo life where the display slid into a headgear. I am wishing to believe it's still possible.
@Pazuzumas
That's a very good point that you brought up. Since VR technology is so expensive, if arcades implemented VR tech it could possibly bring back arcades from obscurity.
It could come to Dave and Buster's later on in the US The VR/AR cockpit games are really popular.
That's awesome. How about a Double Dash iron stomach version where your pal sits on the back as well?
There's always a chance for it to show up in the west. The Luigi's Mansion arcade game did come to the US even though we initially thought it would be Japan only.
@Pazuzumas I actually think a bunch of awesome VR like this and Pod based games (where you actually enter a pod and you feel like your in a jet fighter), crane games (like in Japan), among others could seriously revitalize the arcade scene if the price wasn't super expensive to play. But... the west will never bother to get the good stuff that Japan has anyways, so it will never happen. Japan is constantly making new and exciting arcade machines to help keep the scene alive. I wish we could have something like SEGA arcade or Taito GAME here, but sadly it will never happen, games probably wouldn't be "realistic" enough and not have enough greens and browns and blacks to make the game exciting for westerners... sigh
If Nintendo don't bring out a VR headset seeing how easily and cheaply it could be done then they are total idiots. Whilst everyone else is floundering with their £400 set-ups Nintendo could bring out a £60 head set, pop the switch inside it, use the Joy-Cons to control it and you've instantly got a great rig and due to price it would take over the market.
