Super Mario Odyssey is no doubt going to be absolutely rife with easter eggs, that's part and parcel for a mainline Mario game, but one particularly observant Reddit user by the name of seanmacproductions has discovered one in the game's supposed theme Jump Up, Super Star!, sung by series veteran Pauline.
A short series of notes at one point is absolutely identical to those used when Mario (or 'Jumpman' as he was then known) successfully overcame a barrel or similarly terrifying object in the original Donkey Kong. It's honestly best to hear it for yourself, so make sure you check out the video above that explains it in arguably too much detail.

Third parties don't sell because they don't make games as good as this.
There, I said it.
Oooh...
Yeah, I heard that.
OMG Thats too [removed] cool.
@Fel09ktl Please watch your language - Octane
@Alucard83 Sigh....Not this again...
@Alucard83 If I were you, I would delete this post before a storm comes at you.
Guys, I don't want to break your mood, but....it's been two years since Iwata's passing.
First I thought the video was going to point out the bass line which is from DK, did not notice this small detail yet though!
Now that's a Disney like attention to detail.
Adorable.
@Alucard83
Oh. I thought everyone noticed that.
@Alucard83 Wait... what? Apart from the fact that the city is probably only like 1% of the game, you're entitled to your opinion about that. But if SMO isn't what you'd call "original", then I really don't know what is.
I'm sorry, but what kind of person has time for that? I can't believe someone would listen to this track over 200 times just to catch something like this...
🙄
That sound is officially described as "pi-ro-po-pon-pon!"
@sr_388 Bonus points for the disturbingly deep memory/research involved in that
@Alucard83 i've waited Years for a Sandbox mario game. since Galaxies 2.
@sr_388 I literally laughed out loud on that one!
@Aozz101x It has been quite a while hasn't it... where does the time go?
@Alucard83 It's at least more original than your trolling repertoire.
@Tendogamerxxx Where are you getting that they had to listen to it "over 200 times" to catch it?
In the video @BAN
@Tendogamerxxx Yeah, you're missing the point. First of all, Alex was most likely exaggerating when he said he's listened to the song 200 times. Have you heard of the term "exaggeration"? It's where you embellish a detail to emphasize a point. Regardless, he wasn't saying that he sat there listening to it 200 times consecutively for the specific purpose of trying to catch the reference, he was saying that he has probably heard the song 200 times and yet during those 200 listens he never caught the reference until it was pointed out to him.
Wow, I didn't know he had an appointed peon to defend him @BAN
😂
About a month late on this one Nintendo Life. xD
@Tendogamerxxx I'm not defending him, I'm defending common sense against your supreme ignorance and/or idiocy.
@Alucard83 "Come with something original for the Mario series."
Really? The whole game is pratically original for the Mario series.
Funny, while that line was being sung, the background instruments were playing 25m from Donkey Kong. I was almost too busy noticing that to hear the barrel jump points jingle.
Boy why are there so many trolls on this thread? Sometimes I have been pessimistic when Nintendo releases a new style Mario game for instance I was very pessimistic when I first saw Super Mario 3D Land and world, but then I played Super Mario 3D World and was thoroughly impressed.
Zeltik on YouTube pointed this out a while ago.
