One of the most fun arcade experiences on the Switch eShop right now can be found in Graceful Explosion Machine, as stylish ‘shmup that likes to tempt you into going back for just one more try. The game is almost entirely centered around its leaderboard and ranking system, and now that vertex pop has put out a new update, it’s easier than ever to share your best moments in game and to keep track of your performance in each level.
Version 1.1.0 is now available for download and brings with it a decent selection of tweaks to the game. The score screen has been redesigned to show a more detailed breakdown of things like how much each weapon was used and how many times you got hit. In addition to this, a “Play of the Game”-like AI has been implemented to screenshot the most impressive part of your run for sharing later on. Also, the already decent load times have been nearly halved. Here’s what the developer had to say:
After launching GEM, we were overwhelmed with how enthusiastically everyone took to high score chasing, S-ranking, and sharing scores on Twitter, so we started thinking: how can we make this even better?
We started by redesigning the score screen to give a clearer breakdown of your score, weapon usage, and additional stats that better reflect your play style. It’s both fun and functional.
We also wanted to make it easier to capture and share those clutch GEM moments. Once you’re in the zone, we know it’s hard to stop the game even for a few seconds to grab a screenshot, so we had to come up with a really creative solution.
Or, more accurately, a really technical one: We designed an AI system to pinpoint the most exciting moment of your run, which we then automatically screenshot and display on the score screen. You can fullscreen it, add it to your Album, share it, etc.
(Oh, one more thing! I got really excited looking for a new programming challenge one day and optimized the heck out of the loading code. It started as a quick, easy-peasy thing, but then it kinda spiralled out of control. Long story short: the game loads almost twice as fast now.)
What do you think? How have you been liking Graceful Explosion Machine? What else would you like to see in future updates? Drop us a comment in the section below.

It's a good game, I've had a lot of fun with it but I'm not the type to go chasing after a high score. It sort of lost my interest after a few days. But maybe with this new update I'll get back into playing it for a bit.
Also that's pretty awesome about the improved load times!
I actually forgot about this game. There's just so much stuff to play on the Switch.
GEM is a great game. I just beat it a couple days ago and now want to go back and get better scores on all the levels.
If you want a new programming challenge, how about making a 2 player mode?
I turned it back on and well...it got me back into it. Good game for sure. Even if I can't beat all the hardcores out there.
One of my early Switch games. If I ever stop playing Spla2oon I'll check out the update.
Got it the day it came out but haven't played the game too much actually. It's just I just got Splatoon 2 and some steam games so I really need to work on those.
I don't know how, but I have 30 hours in this game. I love it! I wish my friends had it so I can compete with them(and brag to...)
I was aiming to 100% it before Splatoon 2 but wasn't quite fast enough. I have S+ ranked everything except 5 challenge stages. I've had a lot of fun playing GEM.
Love the game! I still play it now and again. What I really enjoy is the HAD rumble - it adds a lot to the game.
Really good game. Perfect for a 15-minute blast here and there.
Amazing little game. Just sunk another 30 mins into it now!
GEM is one of the best shooters that I have ever played. It is so easy to get in the "zone" and just react. The sword is my very best friend. Missiles I rarely use. I love the balance between main gun overheating and 3 specials that use meter.
GEM is one of the best shooters that I have ever played. So easy to fall into the "zone" with this game due to well balanced weapons and enemies. The sword is my best friend and I love the balance between main gun overheating and specials x 3 that use meter so you constantly need to alternate/balance.
